ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Cody Bradford is set Wednesday to make his first start for the Texas Rangers since the end of the 2024 season in the left-hander's comeback from elbow surgery.
Manager Skip Schumaker said after the Rangers' 5-4 win over San Francisco on Tuesday night that Bradford will start the finale in that series Wednesday afternoon instead of making another rehab start.
Bradford was part of the Rangers' only World Series ***** le as a rookie in 2023, when he was 1-0 with a 1.17 ERA in five relief appearances during the playoffs. He was 4-3 with a 5.30 in 20 regular-season games (eight starts).
His return to the mound for the Rangers will come a day after they snapped a season-worst six-game losing streak that dropped them out of the lead in the AL West. It also came after the trade deadline passed Monday without Texas adding any starting pitchers.
The Rangers are also awaiting the season debut of left-hander Jordan Montgomery, another key piece of the championship run. He returned to Texas in free agency this spring while rehabbing from a second elbow reconstruction surgery.

Once this offseason comes and the collective bargaining agreement expires on December 1, there will be a lockout in Major League Baseball. Owners will use the Dodgers' spending and winning as a cudgel to try to advance their proposals.
Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman pushed back against criticism of the team's latest move, acquiring ace Tarik Skubal for three players on Sunday.
"It just seems like there's always blowback with us," Friedman said. "There's nothing that we did that no one else couldn't have done."
Alden González at ESPN has more on that side of Freidman's Sunday media scrum.
Ken Rosenthal at The Athletic wrote about how cries of the Dodgers ruining baseball will increase after the Skubal trade, even though the move guarantees nothing. Rosenthal wrote about how the Dodgers' financial largesse is certainly an advantage, but the specific Skubal trade was one that many other teams could make:

The Dodgers were swept for just the second time this season after the red-hot Boston Red Sox hit four home runs, including three off embattled starter Emmet Sheehan, to take an 8-4 win on Sunday night at Dodger Stadium.
Boston hit three home runs in four at-bats in the third inning, with Sheehan giving up blasts to Ceddanne Rafela, Wilyer Abreu and Masataka Yoshida as the Dodgers suffered their second three-game sweep at home in less than a month.
"Really good ball club," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said about the Red Sox before the game. "Really fundamentally sound. It's a younger group, as far as service time. They're hungry. Seems like they play well together. They can really defend. They're athletic. Remind me a lot of the Brewers. They can really pitch. They don't beat themselves. Dynamic. They put the ball in play."

Fiorentina came back from 2-0 down for a thrilling 2-2 draw with Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid, as Roberto Piccoli and Moise Kean replied to Endrick, with Denzel Dumfries starting.
The Viola have transformed more than any other team in Serie A this season, as last term they barely managed to escape the relegation zone.
New coach Fabio Grosso set them out in a 4-3-1-2 formation with four new signings in the starting XI against the Merengues, playing on neutral turf at the Worthersee Stadion in Klagenfurt.

Wide receiver Dante Pettis played his last snaps for the San Francisco 49ers in the 2020 season, but after spending the last few months on the market, he's found his new home.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Pettis is signing with the Buffalo Bills early in training camp.
San Francisco originally took Pettis in the second round (No. 44 overall) of the 2018 NFL draft, after he spent four years at Washington and earned both All-Pac-12 and All-American honors in his final season. He also set an NCAA record with nine punt-return touchdowns.
In 28 games with the 49ers, he caught 38 passes for 576 yards and seven touchdowns. Since then, he's had stints with the New York Giants, Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints.
Now, he'll have an opportunity to try to keep his career alive, earn a roster spot and catch passes from Josh Allen in 2026.

Once again, Eddie Howe can be bracketed alongside two of Tyneside's favourite faces. This time, however, it is in less enviable fashion. Sir Bobby Robson and Kevin Keegan left Newcastle suddenly in late summers, decisions seemingly taken at the wrong time plunging them into transition and trouble. At least, unlike a couple of distinguished predecessors, Howe has gone before a season has started and not after a few games.
But it is less than four weeks before it begins, following a 4-1 friendly defeat to Bristol City, when it seems the team Howe built is falling apart. Howe was a transformative and a terrific Newcastle manager, but the danger is his five-year reign comes to be the anomaly in their recent history, a period of achievement surrounded by the underachievement.
Howe did something even Robson and Keegan could not and took a trophy to Tyneside: Newcastle's first since 1969, their first in English football in seven decades. Go back 17 months, to the day they won the Carabao Cup, and Howe was asked about getting his own statue at St James' Park. With characteristic modesty, he deflected the questions. Was he, he was asked, a legend? "We don't put ourselves in that bracket," he said. "We will let other people decide that when we are long gone."

Packers edge rusher Micah Parsons is making good progress in his rehab from a torn ACL, but it continues to sound like he will not be ready to play at the start of the season.
While General Manager Brian Gutekunst told reporters that he's open to the possibility of Parsons coming off the active/physically unable to perform list before the end of training camp, it doesn't seem like that's going to happen.
"Yeah, I'd like to have enough flexibility to leave the door open. But that would be unlikely, just from a timing perspective," Gutekunst said in his Wednesday press conference. "We've invested a lot in him, so we want to make sure he's ready to go before we even think about putting him out there."
That being said, Parsons has made plenty of progress since suffering the injury in December.
"I may have mentioned it before, but he's a little bit of a genetic freak, so things come pretty easy to him," Gutekunst said. "Again, he's still, obviously, got a long ways to go. These are major injuries, so as you go through these things and how hard they have to work to get back, there's always going to be little setbacks here and there. But he's doing great right now."

The Arizona Cardinals, after a day off on Monday, were back at practice at State Farm Stadium on Tuesday. The pads went on and quarterback Jacoby Brissett took over first-team reps with the offense.
What happened on Tuesday?
While Paris Johnson has been activated, there is nothing new with the other three players. Josh Sweat, Garrett Williams and Tip Reiman still haven't been cleared to practice.
Harrison had some injury issues on Sunday. It appeared he might have had back and ankle issues. However, head coach Mike LaFleur said that he was cramping.
According to ESPN's Josh Weinfuss, Harrison had a couple of drops. Per Cardinals.com's Darren Urban, "he found himself wide open about five times in the heart of the defense, Brissett delivering the ball each time. When the Cardinals were running 13 personnel, Harrison was the wideout with the three tight ends."

Cesc Fabregas warns Como could be forced to play the Champions League with 'a squad of 16-17 players' due to their limitations, but welcomes new signings Mattia Liberali, Luis Milla and Kaiki.
The Lariani were in Serie B just two years ago, but now find themselves preparing for the biggest competition in club football after finishing fourth in Serie A last season.
This sudden ascendancy has caught them a little off guard, and means that there will be some strict limits on just who can play in the Champions League.

Jose Mourinho had a very successful first spell at Real Madrid, going toe-to-toe with a super Barcelona team, and now he is back for his second spell.
During his time in the Spanish capital back then, several players played and trained under him, and anecdotes from them are always interesting to hear.
One of them is Borja Mayoral, who spent a stint at Los Blancos and is currently playing for city rivals Getafe.
In an interview with MARCA, the current Getafe striker spoke openly about his experience with Mourinho, describing both the positive influence the coach had on his development and the moments that left him uncomfortable in the dressing room.
Despite not always enjoying regular playing time, Mayoral spoke warmly about Mourinho's work on the training ground. He said:

The Aces forward joined Panini America at All-Star Weekend to meet fans, open packs, and sign Panini cards. According to Panini America, they are hosting NaLyssa Smith and other players and legends at WNBA Live in Chicago surrounding WNBA All-Star Weekend. The Carolina Panthers' blindside will probably look different for quite a while.
National NFL reporter Cameron Wolfe provided some of his latest takeaways on the Panthers during Tuesday's episode of The Insiders. And with yesterday's news of right tackle Taylor Moton hitting the cycle, Wolfe also touched on the other side of the line with left tackle Ikem Ekwonu.
"From what I'm told, he won't be expected back until late in the season, potentially," he stated of Ekwonu.
Ekwonu is still recovering from the tear of his patellar tendon from January's wild-card round loss to the Los Angeles Rams. The Panthers, while seemingly encouraged by the former first-round pick's progress, have not publicly disclosed a timeline for his return.
He'll be joined on the shelf by Moton, who was diagnosed with a blood clot in his lung last month. Carolina placed the 30-year-old lineman on the reserve/non-football injury list, and he is not expected back at the start of the regular season.

Golden State Warriors legend Stephen Curry isn't eligible for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame just yet … but he's going to be honored by the establishment anyway. Curry will become the first-ever current player to receive his own exhibit at the Hall of Fame, it announced Tuesday.
The exhibit, ***** led "Stephen Curry: Beyond the Arc," will focus on — of course — Curry's prowess from 3-point land. Fans hoping to see the exhibit won't have to wait long, as it opens July 24.
The exhibit is quite the honor, as no other current player has ever received an experience at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. There are probably a few reasons for that, one of which being the Hall perhaps doesn't want to highlight a player not currently enshrined.
While that's technically the case for Curry, he's essentially a shoo-in to be inducted on the first ballot. As the Hall's tweet states, few players in the current era have " inspired a generation" like Curry.
The sharpshooter is the all-time leader in 3-pointers made and attempted. He's also the all-time leader in free-throw percentage, sitting at 91%. In addition to that, he's a 12-time All-Star, 11-time All-NBA selection, two-time scoring champ, two-time MVP and four-time champion. That resume screams first-ballot Hall of Famer … it's not really a question.

MLB All-Star Game Final Score, Highlights: AL Blanks NL in First All-Star Game Shutout in 13 Years originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
gainst the backdrop of America’s 250th anniversary, the 96th Midsummer Classic at Citizens Bank Park became a definitive showcase of American League pitching depth. Behind a quick start and a dominant staff performance that limited the National League to just 3 hits, the AL secured a 4-0 victory on Tuesday night in the 2026 MLB All-Star Game.
The AL bats wasted no time, striking for 3 runs in the top of the first. With 2 outs and the bases loaded, New York Yankees outfielder Cody Bellinger ripped a 2-run single to center field, then his teammate Ben Rice followed with an RBI knock, burying the NL in an early 3-0 hole.
From there, the contest settled into a pitching duel, with both sides unable to produce anything on offense. While celebratory fireworks lit up the Philadelphia skyline throughout the night — including a tribute to “The Sandlot” and a “God Bless America” performance — there were none to be found on the diamond, with the teams putting together 13 scoreless frames.
In the top of the 8th, the AL added insurance in the later frames courtesy of Miguel Vargas. Entering as a pinch-runner after Junior Caminero left following a hit-by-pitch, the White Sox infielder launched a 433-foot solo home run to add insurance.

People’s minds instantly jump to football when they think about Penn State athletics, but don’t sleep on the other programs at the school. The baseball team was in a dark spot heading into this decade, but they’ve netted a .500 record or better in each of the last three seasons.
This newfound hope for the team has borne some promising players, like the three who were selected in the draft this past weekend. The 2026 MLB Draft took place in Philadelphia, where Michael Anderson, Alex Weingartner, and Dalton Harper all heard their names called. The latter two players never officially suited up for the Nittany Lions, although they were slated to join the team this fall.
Anderson was a valuable weapon for Penn State last season, finishing with an impressive .358 batting average, 20 home runs and 53 RBI in 50 games. The earliest draft pick of the bunch, the two-way star was selected in the fifth round by the Texas Rangers, where he has a chance to become a top prospect in the organization.
Weingartner and Harper were more like projection picks, with neither having played NCAA baseball to this point. The Nittany Lions may not be competing for the College World Series, but that isn’t preventing them from developing MLB-level talent.

Cavaliers' Kenny Atkinson drops strong ex-Laker LeBron James hint amid free agency rumors originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The biggest free agent this summer is undoubtedly LeBron James, as he has put the entire NBA on hold while making his decision. James is entering his 24th NBA season and could potentially be playing for his fourth different team of his career.
James is weighing all of his options and wants to join a contender with a legitimate chance to win a championship. He informed the Lakers at the beginning of free agency that he would not be returning to Los Angeles.
"LeBron James will return for an unprecedented 24th season in the NBA -- but it won't be with the Los Angeles Lakers. James has informed the Lakers that the franchise can move on without him because he will play elsewhere, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul told ESPN's Shams Charania on Tuesday," ESPN wrote.
A reunion with the Cleveland Cavaliers has become a legitimate possibility due to the team's current situation. One of the biggest factors is that James Harden is reportedly waiting to finalize a deal to help create an opportunity for James to join Cleveland. However, ESPN's Brian Windhorst believes James could be headed elsewhere.
