The Seattle Seahawks issued a cryptic but encouraging update regarding the health of injured quarterback Sam Darnold Monday.
While the precise nature of his injury remains ambiguous, the update points to Darnold returning to the field sooner than later.
Per the Seahawks, Darnold sustained a "very unique soft-tissue." The injury is actually to a glute muscle rather than his hip and is considered "short-term."

I want to start by first giving credit the owner of this site, Mike Rutherford. I promise I'm not being a brown noser as I want to give Mike credit for calling exactly how this game would go. All week he said that he imagined this game would get off to an annoying start and it would take at least the first quarter for the team to wake up. I don't like giving flowers to others, but that's exactly how the game went.
The offense sputtered on their first drive, in what really should have been an opening 3-and-out, saved by a questionable roughing the passer penalty. And Villonva had no trouble marching down the field on easy screen and dump passes.
But even after Lincoln Kienholz's back-to-back misses to Jaleel Skinner, Kienholz found him on the next drive for a sensational TD by the big guy. This was, of course, after he had scampered for his second rushing touchdown of the season.

But what followed was the most frustrating and disappointing part of the game when Villanova scored 2 plays later on a 65-yard strike by Pat McQuaide. I should mention that McQuaide played a great game as he went 18/31 for 166 yards and a touchdown.

The senior co-captain hauled in five receptions for 147 yards and three touchdowns and the junior signal caller completed eight of 12 passes for 211 yards and three scores as the Scarlet Hawks amassed a total of 476 yards in offense en route to a 49-7 grounding of Framingham in a non-league, season-opening matchup at Milford High's turf field.
"Honestly I didn't know what to expect heading into the season,'' said veteran Milford ******* istant coach Dana Olson. "We have a very young team, and we're relying on sophomores and juniors to help carry this team. With the new MIAA rules, we didn't have a lot of time to prepare, and we only had one scrimmage, so we weren't really sure of how things were going to turn out, but I'm happy with the way the guys performed. Sure we made some silly mistakes and committed some penalties, but we'll work on correcting them as the season moves forward."

On the game's first play from scrimmage at their own 39-yard line, the Scarlet Hawks drew first blood and grabbed a 7-0 lead just :12 into the contest. On a backwards pass from Loscerbo to sophomore reserve quarterback Logan Snaddon, who fired a perfect strike downfield to Rosenberg, who raced into the end zone untouched for the 7-0 lead.

Robert Calaz clubbed two long home runs to continue his torrid late-season hitting prowess and the Indians handled the Everett AquaSox 10-4 in the finale of the 2026 Northwest League regular season.
"(Starting pitcher Yuma) Herrera did a great job on the mound," manager Tom Sutaris said. "We came out swinging the bats. It was a really, really good start. We got good pitching, and it was a fun one."

Week 1 of the CFB season is full of non-conference matchups between P4 teams and the dregs of FBS or FCS. Few teams are taking risks this season, at least in their season opener, in order to avoid putting an L on their resume for the CFP committee later in the year. As a result, it's difficult to find many games with single-digit spreads. Nonetheless, there should be some entertaining games and we'll learn a lot some of the relative strengths and weaknesses of the contenders.

The Minnesota Twins paid tribute to future Hall of Fame pitcher Justin Verlander with a pregame video on Wednesday ahead of his final career series in Minnesota.
The video highlighted memorable AL Central matchups and messages from former Twins stars like Torii Hunter and Joe Mauer who battled against Verlander during his 21-year career.
"I just want to congratulate you on an incredible career," said Mauer, who had a lifetime batting average of .317 against Verlander.
"It was an honor to share the field and compete against you. The truth of the matter is you were a true ace."

Over the past few years, Peyton Watson has developed into a solid defender whom the Denver Nuggets have trusted to guard star players. With his 6'8" frame and his high-level athleticism, it was the optimal role for him. He did well, especially when it came to his shot-blocking ability.
Considering Watson had to play against plenty of star players, one name in particular stood out to him. That is Minnesota Timberwolves superstar Anthony Edwards, who is one of the league's most talented scorers. Watson admits that he has a hard time playing against him, which is a normal opinion for most defenders.
Edwards has been one of the most feared scorers in the league for his entire career. He has gone from being a superb slasher to becoming one of the league's most dangerous three-level scorers. He always has a counter-move against defenders, and Watson got a front-row seat to that almost every Nuggets-Timberwolves game.
Now that Watson is playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers, he won't see Edwards that often. However, he will be playing against some of the Eastern Conference's best, which includes Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, so that experience against Edwards will be valuable.

The Patriots entered this weekend with 91 players on their roster. Mike Vrabel's team must be down to 53 players by Sunday at 6 p.m. These next 48 hours mark one of the busiest times in the NFL, with all teams making dozens of roster moves.

In 2023, Jaden Dugger was a safety. In 2024, he was a pass rusher. In 2025, he was an inside linebacker. In 2026, Louisiana coach Michael Desormeaux feared his star pupil could be undrafted.
Because Dugger changed positions annually, some NFL evaluators weren't sure what he was heading into April's draft. Desormeaux said he heard a common refrain from scouts: "We just don't see where he fits."
Desormeaux's response: Pick a spot for him. He'll be a great pick.
"They'd ask, 'What does he need to work on? '" Desormeaux said. "And I'd tell them, 'Well, he just needs to play linebacker. Or whatever he's going to play.'"
The San Francisco 49ers agreed - sort of. They believed Dugger was a late-round gem when they selected him in the fifth round four months ago. But why force a 6-foot-5, 242-pound player with gas-hose arms and extensive experience at all three levels of the defense into one position?

The Los Angeles Rams beat the Los Angeles Chargers by a final score of 20-18 in Week 3 of the NFL preseason. Though the Rams began with the ball on offense, and Ty Simpson perhaps threw the best ball of his career in this contest, the story of the game more or less begins with Justin Herbert, and some other notable Chargers taking the field in this preseason matchup.
The Chargers wanted to see parts of their first team offense as they gear up for Week 1. It started about as poorly as it could for the former team out of San Diego. Herbert bobbled his second snap as the Rams defense came away with the takeaway.
Safety Nick Andersen, who's had a nice preseason, made the recovery, and it was a thrilling moment for the defensive unit full of backups and fringe players. The Rams scored a field goal on the turnover as the Chargers defense, also playing with some expected starters, stopped the Rams on a fourth and goal.
Before you could wonder if the Chargers and their offense were in serious trouble, Herbert showed that his regular season should be just fine when he found Quentin Johnston for a 65-yard TD strike. At that point, Jim Harbugh and Mike McDaniel had seen enough from Herbert who went to the sidelines with his one fumble, one touchdown day.
Simpson played the entire first half, and opened the game failing to score a touchdown on his first couple drives, but Simpson did lead the team to a Harrison Mevis field goal before flashing on an 11-yard touchdown throw that should get plenty of media coverage on Friday.

Sadly, Dolly Parton passed yesterday after a brief battle with cancer. From all the tributes pouring out from every corner, it's clear she was a beloved person who did immeasurable good in the world. That's how we should all hope to be remembered when our time comes. It's so easy to be adored, other ultra-rich people. Just follow her example. She used her wealth to fund medical research, help children learn to read, among other things, and left the world a much better place.
On a happier note, today is World Dog Day. That's ****** nal team dog Win in the cover photo. Everyone give a furry friend an extra scratch behind the ears and another treat. They've more than earned it. Not that I needed much reason to like Bruno Guimaraes more than I do (now that he's in an ****** nal shirt) or Illan Meslier, but both have pictures of their dogs on their social media. David Raya, Ben White, Declan Rice, Martin Ødegaard, and Kai Havertz are all known dog-owners. I'm sure I'm missing a few from the squad.

The New York Jets have moved on from kicker Cade York but there is still likely more to come.
On Monday, the Jets' practice saw both York and veteran Jason Sanders struggle. In response, The Athletic reports that York has been waived in light of that:

Formerly an All-Pro with the Miami Dolphins, Sanders remains the only kicker on New York's roster following the decision with York. The 30-year-old missed the entire 2025 season with a hip injury, and potentially because of that, he has had a rocky summer as well.
Considering the latter struggles, there could be a distinct chance that the Jets still add offseason competition for Sanders. It is worth noting that special teams coordinator Chris Banjo did praise Sanders' veteran experience during training camp.

The offseason is over, and college football is back … for a few teams, at least.
As in recent years, the regular season will start with a "Week Zero" handful of games. The vast majority of FBS teams will begin play a week later.
Even with an eight-game slate on tap for Saturday, Aug. 29, there is still plenty to look for as the college football season begins.
The day begins as North Carolina takes on TCU in Dublin, Ireland. This will be the official start of Year 2 in the Bill Belichick era at UNC, and he will be looking to improve on the disappointing 4-8 2025 campaign that included a 48-14 blowout loss to TCU in the season opener.
Saturday's slate concludes as Memphis heads west to take on UNLV. Charles Huff will debut as the Tigers' new head coach after going 7-5 with Southern Miss last season. The Rebels are not only preseason favorites in the Mountain West, but also many ***** ysts' choice to get the Group of Six College Football Playoff spot.

New England Patriots defensive tackle Christian Barmore valued the team's joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles.
According to Sports Illustrated's Mike Kadlick, Barmore gave props to the Eagles for the competition level that they provided him in preparation for next season.
"They're a great team," Barmore said regarding the Eagles. "I love the battles and we're gonna keep going."

Two people with knowledge recently informed MMA Junkie of the booking but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.
Kyrgyzstan's Abdullaev (13-0) allegedly split from ONE in the spring. Abdullaev is deemed "the uncrowned champion" by fans, as he defeated champion Tang Kai by fifth-round TKO stoppage but failed the hydration test, making him ******* le-ineligible. Abdullaev has a 100 percent finishing rate through 13 professional fights with 12 knockouts and one submission.
Figueroa (9-1) is a second-generation fighter. His father, who shares the same name, competed six times for Strikeforce from 2006 to 2008. In nine professional wins, Figueroa has four finishes, including three knockouts and one submission. Former UFC double champion Daniel Cormier has taken Figueroa under his wing.

Delaware resident Mark McKenzie is reportedly returning to the Philadelphia Union, where he launched a pro soccer career that led him to the 2026 World Cup.
The 27-year-old center back will remain with Toulouse in France's Ligue 1 until the January transfer window before rejoining the Union at an estimated $2.5 million fee, The Athletic reported.
That will position McKenzie to appear for the Union when Major League Soccer's inaugural summer-to-spring 2026-27 schedule begins.
McKenzie had made 30 appearances for the U.S. senior men's national team, including starting and playing its entire 2026 World Cup game against Turkiye.
The Bear resident is a Union homegrown player, coming up through its academy system starting at age 13. He attended Newark Charter School until 11th grade before transferring to the Union's YSC Academy in Wayne, Pennsylvania.

A little over a month ago, Georgia Tech defensive lineman Tawfiq Thomas' made a viral social media post about his former team.
On Monday, the former Colorado Buffaloes transfer justified his remarks. Thomas is dressed in Georgia Tech game day gear from head to toe. Hat, jersey, uniform pants and cleats. However, there were additional elements that take this from a reasonable post to regrettable trolling.
The most noticeable is that Thomas is standing in front of a framed poster that shows the final score and stats from Georgia Tech's 27-20 victory over Colorado last season. This included is a countdown clock to the Week 1 match-up between the Buffs and Yellow Jackets. He tagged CU Football's official account and even made it Shedeur Sanders specific by including audio of Sanders' "Perfect Timing" song as well as corresponding lyrics.
The ploy by Thomas likely did not have the result he was hoping for. It might have been a friendly jab, but it was anything but effective. Perhaps during his time in Boulder, Thomas failed to grasp the built-in Sanders fanbase. Established Buffaloes fans might be less likely to engage a player who is no longer with the program. Sanders fans, on the other hand, are all too happy to check receipts and push back.
Following Thomas' original tweet from July 20, the critics showed up in droves. Some of the comments were of the 'act like a professional' variety, while others were much more direct and insulting. Many of the keyboard warriors that patrol social media in an effort to protect Deion Sanders and the Buffs wasted no time responding. Colorado alum Matt McChesney also addressed the post on his Zero2Sixty podcast.

NFL fans are concerned about New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo after watching a preseason training video.
The Giants drafted Skattebo in the fourth round last year, and he made an immediate impact at MetLife Stadium.
The 24-year-old had 410 rushing yards, 207 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in eight games before suffering a broken ankle.
Skattebo then missed the remainder of the 2025 season due to injury and is now preparing for his comeback next month.
