"Ceddanne Rafaela exited today with quad tightness," The Boston Globe's Tim Healey reported after speaking with Tracy. "He tried to keep playing, but in a blowout, the Red Sox decided it wasn't worth it."
Rafaela finished 1-for-3 before Eli White replaced him in center field. The fact that Rafaela attempted to remain in the game suggests Boston is not immediately anticipating an extended absence. He should still be considered day to day entering Thursday's series opener against the Baltimore Orioles.
Boston has already been forced to navigate several physical issues during a critical portion of its schedule. Willson Contreras recently landed on the injured list with a hamstring injury. Contreras turned a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 lead with a mammoth three-run home run off Giants All-Star Logan Webb that easily cleared the Green Monster — and perhaps a couple of buildings behind it. Contreras' homer left his bat at 116 mph and had a final projected distance of 452 feet. It was both the hardest- and farthest-hit ball by a Red Sox batter in 2026.
"It was hit a ton," said interim manager Chad Tracy. "He hit it really good."
Trailing 1-0 after a Bryce Eldridge RBI single in the top of the inning, the Red Sox got to Webb with two outs in the third. BOSTON - Even when they lose, which they do a lot, the San Francisco Giants are never short of story lines and interesting twists.
Slugger Rafael Devers got a mixed reaction in his return to Fenway Park - lots of boos when he was announced and during his first at-bat, but many cheers during a between-innings video tribute. Then Devers hit a blast to dead center in the fourth, cutting Boston's lead to one, and the boos got the edge. Devers went back-to-back with Drew Gilbert, not a slugger type, who slipped a two-run shot down the right-field line.
That wasn't quite enough in an eventual 6-4 loss to the onrushing Red Sox. Logan Webb, so sharp this month, with an ERA under 1.00 and 17 strikeouts to just two walks, succumbed to the same issues that have plagued many of the team's younger starters. He walked three and hit two, leading to three Boston runs. He also gave up a 116 mph laser of a three-run homer by Willson Contreras (the answer at first base for the Red Sox when Devers wasn't).
Giants infielder Christian Koss, traded a little more quietly than Devers was when he went from Boston to San Francisco for cash at the end of spring training in 2024, singled, doubled and scored twice against the club that gave up on him when he still had an option remaining. Nick Sogard, who led off for the Red Sox and scored two runs Friday, was among those who'd moved ahead of Koss on Boston's Triple-A depth chart.

Then Logan Webb walked out for the bottom half and things fell apart in about 22 pitches. Hit batters, walks, hits, runs, all of it cascading at once.

It was a complete reversal for an offense that struggled during a disappointing 2-5 road trip through Toronto and Pittsburgh.
Ceddanne Rafaela led the relentless attack with three doubles and two runs scored. Willson Contreras launched his 25th home run of the season, setting a new career high, while Mickey Gasper hit his first homer in a Red Sox uniform.
Boston finished 6-for-13 with runners in scoring position and improved to 67-58. The victory also moved the Red Sox within 2 1/2 games of the idle New York Yankees in both the American League East and wild-card standings.

Maria Menounos is a cancer survivor. The Medford native was the third or fourth scheduled Jimmy Fund-supported appearance on tonight's broadcast/telethon, the scheduling of which was impeccable. The Sox pulled ahead and away early and never let up, and the appearance of Menounos and other affected families was more conspicuous on the broadcast than ever, due to the team kicking a lot of ******* . It was inspiring and a reminder that the time will be passed, goshdarnit, and it will occasionally force you to think about things you didn't anticipate, and you learn something.
Then it all comes back to beisbol, and when the Sox go up 9-1 in the 6th, and Maria sez "God is blessing this game," it's hard to disagree. By that point, every Sox starter had an RBI. That's *really* hard to do. And while it should probably be noted that AZ star Ketel Marte simply didn't show up to the game (which is wild), he wouldn't have helped. Adley Rutschman is playing baseball! Unfortunately he's doing it in Worcester, not Boston. Still, it was nice to see him behind the plate for five innings, during which he went 1-2 for two walks and threw out a runner. It was also nice for him, given that he played in front of both his father and the family that hosted him during his season playing in the Cape league. "He was great to have. It was exciting, he was coming off being in the College World Series at Oregon State," said his former host Bill Matta. "He'd play with my boys — they played wiffle ball, they'd go for ice cream. Speaking of rehab, Marcelo Mayer hopes to finish his rehab soon and make his debut with the Giants. He doesn't sound too upset about being shipped west. Two nights after rallying from behind five times to defeat the Chicago White Sox in 13 innings, Boston was down by four runs to the Athletics going into the bottom of the ninth with their nine-game winning streak at stake.
Facing A's closer Hogan Harris, Jahmai Jones hit a one-out double. But Harris then struck out Ceddanne Rafaela, getting him to chase a fastball that darted inside way out of the strike zone. Caleb Durbin kept the inning alive for the Red Sox, hitting a middle-middle slider for a single to drive in Jones.

Davis Martin floundered through five innings while Patrick Sandoval worked smoothly through the South Siders despite struggling with his control, earning the W for the Red Sox.
Tonight was the second time this season that Martin has allowed nine runs; the other was June 16, while visiting the Yankees, when things really started to go downhill. There are definitely some red flags to consider as we head into crunch time in a tight division race, since this was the third outing in a row where he surrendered four or more runs.
