The Boston Red Sox did not have many reasons to feel good after Wednesday's 8-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners, but the initial news on Ceddanne Rafaela appears encouraging. Rafaela was removed after the sixth inning because of quad tightness. Interim manager Chad Tracy indicated the move was precautionary, especially with the Red Sox trailing 8-1 at the time.
"Ceddanne Rafaela exited today with quad tightness," The Boston Globe's Tim Healey reported after speaking with Tracy. "He tried to keep playing, but in a blowout, the Red Sox decided it wasn't worth it."
Rafaela finished 1-for-3 before Eli White replaced him in center field. The fact that Rafaela attempted to remain in the game suggests Boston is not immediately anticipating an extended absence. He should still be considered day to day entering Thursday's series opener against the Baltimore Orioles.
Boston has already been forced to navigate several physical issues during a critical portion of its schedule. Willson Contreras recently landed on the injured list with a hamstring injury. Adley Rutschman has been dealing with a hyperextended right elbow, while Garrett Crochet is still working toward a return from his lat and shoulder issue.

Seattle appeared poised to steal the opener after battling back and generating offense throughout the night. The Mariners totaled 11 hits receiving contributions up and down the lineup. The Sox got one more hit and ultimately, one more run. They forced extra innings with two runs in the eighth on a Trevor Story double and one in the ninth on a sac fly from Ceddanne Rafaela before Story again picked up a big hit in the tenth, a single to center, driving in Eli White to win it for the Red Sox. Aroldis Chapman picked up the win. Randy Arozarena and Cal Raleigh went yard for the Mariners, but it was not enough.
Seattle closed the month of August with five straight losses and now sit six games behind the Astros in the AL West and 5.5 games behind the Guardians for the final Wild Card spot. The Red Sox snapped a brief two-game losing streak with the win to pull within three games of the Yankees and the top Wild Card spot in the American League.
Seattle looks to snap the skid with right-hander Bryan Woo (9-9, 4.36 ERA) on the ******* p. Woo's most recent outing came August 26 against Philadelphia, and it was one of his rougher starts of the year. The Phillies tagged him for six earned runs on five hits over four innings, including a pair of home runs. He struck out five but was unable to work deep into the game as Seattle lost 6-0. The righthander fared far better in his previous two starts. He allowed two runs in six innings at Houston on August 16 and threw five scoreless innings at Yankee Stadium on August 11. The Red Sox have yet to announce their starter for tonight. It was Sonny Gray's (16-4, 2.79 ERA) turn to take the ball but Boston earlier announced they planned to give him an extra day of rest.

Jarren Duran has struggled offensively this season and is far from the player he was in 2024 when he was an All-Star.
Duran led the league in doubles and triples in 2024. His numbers declined in 2025, but he still had a .774 OPS and had 70 extra-base hits. This year, he is hitting .209 with a .632 OPS, but this month has been much better.
He has played in 21 games this month, starting all but one of those games. He had a day off on Aug. 17, but is slashing .267/.321/.507 with nine extra-base hits. He has a .828 OPS, six RBIs, five walks and four homers. His batting average last month was .210.
With Roman Anthony returning soon, Duran is at risk of losing playing time. However, Masataka Yoshida's injury opens the designated hitter spot up for Duran to get at-bats. Mickey Gasper has filled in nicely, but as players return, Gasper is a candidate to lose his spot. If the Red Sox think Duran can continue to do what he's done in August, they could go back to using the designated hitter spot to get all four of Anthony, Duran, Wilyer Abreu and Ceddanne Rafaela in the lineup.

Five Red Sox players appeared prominently across three categories in ESPN's latest MLB Awards Watch. Willson Contreras and Ceddanne Rafaela ranked among the top five candidates for American League MVP, while Payton Tolle and Jake Bennett landed in the top 10 for AL Rookie of the Year.
Veteran right-hander Sonny Gray also appeared eighth in the AL Cy Young race. The rankings were produced through AXE, an ESPN rating system that combines several value metrics, including Baseball Reference WAR, FanGraphs WAR, win probability added and championship probability added.
AXE does not reflect the official vote. It provides a consensus measurement of each player's overall value. By that measurement, Boston's roster is loaded with some of the most impactful players in the American League.

The Red Sox have scored 20 runs on 29 hits through the first two games of the series. Eight different Boston hitters recorded at least one hit Tuesday, while Adley Rutschman and Mickey Gasper supplied the power.
For a lineup that recently endured another frustrating disappearance, the two-game eruption could not have come at a better time. Boston has won three of its last four games, improving to 68-58 and remaining firmly involved in the American League playoff race.

It was a complete reversal for an offense that struggled during a disappointing 2-5 road trip through Toronto and Pittsburgh.
Ceddanne Rafaela led the relentless attack with three doubles and two runs scored. Willson Contreras launched his 25th home run of the season, setting a new career high, while Mickey Gasper hit his first homer in a Red Sox uniform.
Boston finished 6-for-13 with runners in scoring position and improved to 67-58. The victory also moved the Red Sox within 2 1/2 games of the idle New York Yankees in both the American League East and wild-card standings.

If you missed the game, the Red Sox and Blue Jays game in Toronto on Monday had a ruling that….well, I'm not sure any of us have ever seen.
Let's set the scene first. Boston had runners on the corners with one out. Ceddanne Rafaela hits a ball to center that would've been deep enough to score Anthony Siegler on a sac fly.
That is… if Siegler (and Nick Sogard as the runner at first) knew how many outs there were in the frame.
Apparently, the scoreboard at the SkyDome (I'm dead naming it, you can't stop me) displayed two outs. The confusion stemmed from the previous play, where Vlad Guerrero Jr. fielded a screamer right at him at first before firing to the base for a force out; the ball hit the ground, but my guess is that there was some confusion in the moment about whether or not it was a double play.

TORONTO — Instant reactions to the Red Sox (64-54) losing their third straight game Monday, a 2-1 loss to the Blue Jays that included one of the more bizarre sequences you'll ever see on a baseball field:
1) The Red Sox, after dropping two games to the Athletics over the weekend at home, have lost three in a row for the first time since June 16-18, when the Blue Jays swept them at Fenway Park. Boston has scored just seven runs in its last 27 innings following a 25-run outburst in a two-game span Thursday and Friday.
Boston won nine series in a row before the weekend set against the A's. With one more loss in Toronto, the best they'll be able to do is split a four-game set north of the border.
2) A bizarre — and confounding — sequence played out in the seventh inning as Toronto led, 2-0. With two men on and no outs, Nick Sogard hit a sharp ball to first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. that Guerrero fielded on a hop, then threw to second. That means there was one out recorded — not a double play.
The league-controlled video board (and a press box announcement) said there were two outs... but Sogard stayed on first as Anthony Seigler took third. One pitch later, Ceddanne Rafaela hit a fly ball to center and both runners — thinking there were two outs — were off on contact. Sogard was picked off for an inning-ending double play.

Needless to say, that left everyone in Toronto a little confused.
Seigler scored Boston's only run in a 2-1 loss to the Blue Jays on a chaotic, inning-ending double play that resulted in a 17-minute delay trying to sort out the whole thing.
While there was only one out when Ceddanne Rafaela hit a flyball to center field in the seventh, the scoreboard showed two outs. The ball was still in the air when Seigler headed toward the plate and Nick Sogard took off from first base.
When the ball was caught and the Blue Jays eventually tossed it to first to double up Sogard, that was the third out and it appeared Toronto still led 2-0 as players headed to the dugout.

Then…..true weirdness. The scoreboard, apparently showed two outs. Truly that's really neither here nor there, as my dad would say. It is a none issue.

Brett Bateman threw the ball in to second, and, after a bit of confusion, the Jays threw to first to double up the runner that left first. Everybody left the field. Sportsnet went to commercial.

Whatever else can be said about tonight's game, it had one of the most "you can't predict baseball" moments of all time. It was the only run the Sox scored, and it was utterly ridiculous, and they lost anyway.
The short story is this: Both Sonny Gray and Jameson Taillon were on point, with the first damage coming on a solo homer from Charles McAdoo, his second ever. Really can't be allowing that stuff, says smart guy:

Here's what happened:
Ceddanne Rafaela comes up with runners on first (Eric Sogard) and second (Anthony Siegler) with one out. Only, and this is important, the scoreboard in center says there are two outs. Which apparently all the players watch, because when Ceddy flies out to center, no one is really moved by it, and the Blue Jays tag first in the perfunctory way teams do when they're just sort of going on muscle memory. During all this, Sogard crosses second and Siegler crosses home.

The Boston Red Sox scored one of the most bizarre runs you'll see in a baseball game thanks to a scoreboard error and some major mental mistakes from everyone on the field.
On Monday, the Red Sox were visiting the Toronto Blue Jays for a mid-August AL East series. With the Blue Jays up 2-0 in the top of the seventh inning, the Red Sox were looking to get on the scoresheet with runners on first and third with one out. While the broadcast graphics clearly said there was one out in the top of the seventh, the center field scoreboard in Toronto incorrectly displayed that there were two outs when Ceddanne Rafaela was up to bat.
What then happened was complete chaos. Rafaela popped the ball up to center field, yet the two Red Sox runners started to run the bases like there were two outs, with Anthony Seigler running to home without tagging at third. The Blue Jays also seemed confused as to how many outs there were, as they correctly executed the double play, but pitcher Simeon Woods Richardson and catcher Brandon Valenzuela started to walk off the field after the catch like the inning was over.
As expected, this created incredible confusion on the field in Toronto as the umpire attempted to sort things out, even going to a rules check in New York due to the weirdness of it all.
At the end of a 15 minute delay, the umpires announced that the Red Sox ended up earning a run on Seigler crossing home even though he didn't tag third. But why? Well, according to Sportsnet reporter Hazel Mae who talked to Max Scherzer, the Blue Jays were waved off by the home plate umpire and then couldn't appeal the decision because Richardson and Valenzuela walked off the field.

Two nights after rallying from behind five times to defeat the Chicago White Sox in 13 innings, Boston was down by four runs to the Athletics going into the bottom of the ninth with their nine-game winning streak at stake.
Facing A's closer Hogan Harris, Jahmai Jones hit a one-out double. But Harris then struck out Ceddanne Rafaela, getting him to chase a fastball that darted inside way out of the strike zone. Caleb Durbin kept the inning alive for the Red Sox, hitting a middle-middle slider for a single to drive in Jones.
Was it happening again?
Willson Contreras followed up with a single as Harris again left a pitch in the middle of the zone. Perhaps trying to overcompensate, the A's closer then stayed largely out of the zone but walked Andruw Monasterio as a result.

The White Sox (59-53) folded on offense and waved the white flag on the mound as the Red Sox (61-51) rolled to a 14-2 victory in Tuesday's series opener, outhitting Chicago, 15-6. Davis Martin floundered through five innings while Patrick Sandoval worked smoothly through the South Siders despite struggling with his control, earning the W for the Red Sox.
Tonight was the second time this season that Martin has allowed nine runs; the other was June 16, while visiting the Yankees, when things really started to go downhill. There are definitely some red flags to consider as we head into crunch time in a tight division race, since this was the third outing in a row where he surrendered four or more runs. Davis owned a 3.62 ERA just a few hours ago, but Tuesday's implosion has inflated it to 4.13 on the season. In his last seven starts (34 1/3 innings), he owns a rough 6.55 ERA with a 1.60 WHIP, and he's been striking guys out at a much lower rate with just 20 Ks in this time span.
There may have been at least one explanation for Tuesday's disaster. After the game, manager Will Venable said Davis Martin was tipping his pitches, an issue catcher Kyle Teel identified during the game and brought to the coaching staff's attention. That doesn't erase Martin's recent struggles, but it does provide some context for why Boston's hitters looked so comfortable from the opening inning.
Martin's recent inconsistency is still worth monitoring. While tipping pitches may have contributed to Tuesday's outing, his results over the past several starts have been uneven. His recent inconsistencies were one of the main reasons I was hoping Chris Getz would trade for another starting pitcher before Monday's deadline, especially when everyone not named Sean Burke is a wild card when they start. Before the All-Star break — through June, really — Davis looked like he was approaching ace status, but he has been regressing lately, and it's hard to imagine how he would perform in a playoff game at this moment in time. I'm still optimistic, and I've not given up on him by any means, but if we are being realistic, there's quite a bit of uncertainty around his performance for the remainder of the season.
Right off the bat, Nick Sogard rattled Martin with a leadoff double off the Green Monster, then hit Ceddanne Rafaela square in the back on a curveball that got away to put two runners on. Davis navigated an out on a deep fly that advanced the runners, but back-to-back base hits from Willson Contreras and Masataka Yoshida scored the first run for the Red Sox, 1-0, and then loaded the bases with just one out. Naturally, Caleb Durbin demolished the second pitch he saw for a grand slam over the Green Monster in left, increasing the Boston lead to five, 5-0.

One pitch was all Sheehan needed to get Willson Contreras to line out to left, but the Red Sox broke through with a pair of two-out, RBI singles from Masataka Yoshida and Caleb Durbin. Sheehan finished his first inning with a strikeout, limiting Boston to the two runs, albeit on 30 pitches.
Sheehan would bounce back in the second inning, as he faced the minimum while striking out the side in order.
The Dodgers strung across a one-out rally in the bottom of the second inning against rookie Jake Bennett, as Kyle Tucker, Teoscar Hernández and Max Muncy singled to load the bases for Eliézer Alfonzo. Alfonzo drove home Tucker one a groundout to put the Dodgers on the board, and after an intentional walk to Shohei Ohtani, Andy Pages gave the Dodgers the lead with an opposite field, two-strike, two-run single.

After two impressive wins in Los Angeles, the Red Sox will try to complete a sweep against the Dodgers on Sunday night.
Boston put nine runs on the board in the series opener, then won the second game behind strong performances from Ceddanne Rafaela and the pitching staff. Rafaela, who earned the first All-Star selection of his career this season, has hit three home runs in two games against Los Angeles.
Left-hander Jake Bennett is expected to take the mound for the series finale. Can he lead the Red Sox to a fifth straight victory?

On the third pitch of the game, Ceddanne Rafaela homered and the Sox were off and running. Yippee! 1-0.
Then in the second, Payton Tolle gave up a homer that scored two. Ouch! He then proceeded to load the bases. Yikes! It was a nerve-wracking inning, though a ball that would have likely scored two runs ended up landing just foul, bouncing right over the line in front of Wilyer Abreu. The old July luck was clearly still with the Sox because Tolle managed to get out of the inning with only those two early runs. It felt like an August miracle. Dodgers 2-1.
Rafaela repeated with another homer to left field in the third inning, tying it up, 2-2.
Although Tolle struggled early, he settled down after that rough second inning, at one point striking out four in a row across the fourth and fifth innings. He finished with 9 H, 2 ER, 2 BB and 7K, not his best game by any means, but pretty darn impressive anyway, with how he turned things around. It looked like it would be a short outing, but he ground it out, didn't have any further issues, and turned it over to the bullpen after six full innings. The bullpen was spot-on, giving the offense (other than Rafaela) a chance to show up.
By the bottom of the sixth inning, the Dodgers had out-hit the Sox 9-2. The Sox held there until a ground-rule double by Andruw Monasterio in the eighth. He was followed by Jarren Duran who bunted to put men on the corners. Connor Wong then grounded into a double play – but the good kind, the kind that allows the runner to score from third. Hooray for small ball! Sox took the lead 3-2.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitched eight strong innings, but the Dodgers offense didn't support him, falling to the Boston Red Sox 3-2 on Saturday night at Dodger Stadium.
Yamamoto, who leads MLB averaging 6.68 innings per start, completed eight innings for the fourth time this season, tying Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara for the major league lead. Yamamoto struck out three and walked one, needing only 96 pitches to complete his eight frames. But he left trailing.
Ceddanne Rafaela, who homered in a three-hit game on Friday night, got the scoring started on Saturday with a solo home run with one out in the first inning, just three pitches into the game. He hit another solo shot in the third inning.
Those were the only hits off Yamamoto until the eighth inning, when Andruw Monasterio hit a leadoff ground rule double then scored two ground ***** later.
Teoscar Hernández went out to right field for a two-run shot in the second inning for his second home run in three days, after hitting two home runs in his previous 28 games before that.

WEST SACRAMENTO — Reactions from the Red Sox' 4-3 loss to the Athletics at Sutter Health Park on Tuesday:
1. The Red Sox dropped to 55-51 while the Athletics improved to 45-62. The loss ended Boston's 10-game road winning streak dating back to July 3.
2. Connor Wong blasted a two-out, two-run home run off A's lefty Hogan Harris to cut Boston's deficit to 4-3 in the ninth. Anthony Seigler made an attempt to tie it but flied out 397 feet to center field to end the game. The A's had scored in the eighth inning to go ahead by three runs.
3. Boston made a questionable decision in the seventh inning to play for one run while trailing 1-0 after Athletics starter Gage Jump left the game following six dominant innings.
Ceddanne Rafaela led off with a sharp single to right field against reliever Luis Medina.

WEST SACRAMENTO — Instant reactions from the Red Sox' 4-2 win over the Athletics on Monday at Sutter Health Park:
1. Boston improved to 55-50 while the Athletics dropped to 44-62. The Red Sox are 18-3 in July and won their 10th straight game on the road. They are 23-4 since June 25.
2. Ceddanne Rafaela's first career grand slam and 11th homer this season put the Red Sox ahead 4-1 in the sixth inning. It was only Boston's second hit of the game. The All-Star center fielder connected on a slider from left-handed reliever José Suarez and belted it 382 feet, just clearing the left field wall.
3. Boston didn't record its first hit against A's starter Jack Perkins until Connor Wong doubled to lead off the sixth inning. Perkins retired the next two hitters, Masataka Yoshida and Anthony Seigler, on groundouts before walking Willson Contreras.
Suarez replaced Perkins with runners at the corners. He walked Wilyer Abreu to load the bases, then allowed Rafaela's grand slam.
