It's hard to compete with the offensive fireworks of a 20-0 game, but a Navy World War II veteran got as big an ovation as anybody Sept. 11 during the game between the Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds.
Sverre Vinje, age 102, sang "God Bless America" in the middle of the seventh inning during Milwaukee's playoff-clinching performance, and you simply have to see it for yourself.
The Rockford, Illinois, resident was there at the Battle of Iwo Jima and the Battle of Okinawa, according to WIFR in Rockford. He told the station he decided to enlist after hearing about the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Vinje's hometown gave him a surprise birthday celebration in June.
He's sung the tune at sporting events before, including at games for the Rockford IceHogs hockey team.

NEW YORK (AP) — Twenty-five years ago, Brielle Saracini was 10 years old and trying to cope with losing her father, Victor Saracini, the pilot on United flight 175, which was taken over by the 9/11 hijackers and crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center.
Spurred on by a friend, she wrote a letter to Derek Jeter, met the Yankees captain at Yankee Stadium and formed a lifelong friendship.
On Friday, as New York commemorated the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks, Saracini threw out the ceremonial first pitch with Jeter watching from the mound before the Yankees hosted the crosstown Mets.
"I remember just talking about anything and everything and anything that kind of came through my mind that day and you just made it so comfortable and I remember just feeling normal for a day, which was hard to do," Saracini said while sitting next to Jeter at a news conference. "The odds were stacked against me that day but I remember just taking a minute and just having normal conversations and just feeling like a kid."

MIAMI — Josue De Paula's major league debut was never going to be judged by the box score alone.
The 21-year-old Dodgers prospect went 0-for-3 with a walk Friday night at LoanDepot Park, hardly the kind of debut that jumps off the page. But for a player who has spent years building toward this moment, the more meaningful signs came in the at-bats themselves.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — More than half a million Russian troops have been killed in Ukraine since the start of Moscow's full-scale invasion in February 2022, a senior British defense official said Friday.
The dead are part of 1.5 million Russian casualties in Ukraine, Air Chief Marshall Sir Richard Knighton, Chief of the U.K's Defense Staff, said.
The U.K. figures roughly coincide with those published by the Ukrainian military. There was no immediate comment from Russian officials.
Moscow's bigger army is struggling to make headway on the battlefield. Western officials and ***** ysts say the Russian rate of advance has slowed significantly this year.
Russia's armed forces have also lost an "enormous" amount of military materiel, Knighton told reporters. That includes more than 10,000 armored and protected vehicles, close to 3,000 air defense and artillery systems, and over 370 aircraft and helicopters, Knighton said.

Spire Motorsports owner Jeff **** erson responded to Denny Hamlin's bold statement about his team being an "unserious" one. The comments were made on Hamlin's "Actions Detrimental" podcast in the wake of a controversial incident involving Brad Keselowski and Spire Motorsports driver Carson Hocevar at Darlington.
Towards the end of Stage 1 in the Cook Out Southern 500, contact between Hocevar and Keselowski sent the latter spinning. After the race, Hocevar was tight-lipped in his reaction to the incident, simply saying:
"I don't know. He spun."
Keselowski, meanwhile, had fiery comments for the driver of the No. 77 after the race."His day's coming and it's coming hard. Watch out, Carson," he said.
Hocevar said he will "tighten his belts" in response to Keselowski's comments.

ZEELAND - Logan Nash didn't look very tired for a kid who rarely left the football field.
The Zeeland West senior, who is a defensive back and running back, was making tackles left and right with his teammates in a 24-0 win over Newmarket Huron Heights, a team from outside of Toronto.
"That's just how we play football," Nash said. "We're diving around out there jumping on piles. We're nuts."
Huron Heights runs a very similar offense to Zeeland West's Wing-T.
"It's just like playing the Unity boys; hard-tough nosed football," Nash said of conference rival Unity Christian.

For those who work in the NHL, rookie camp is among the most exciting parts of the summer.
It's not that people particularly look forward to sitting in cold rinks, watching a bunch of 20-something-year-old NHL hopefuls practice. It's not that they're keen on watching said rookies play other teams' young guns on a glorified LiveBarn feed.
It's that it marks the beginning of the new season. In other words, rookie camp marks the end of the summer — and the beginning of the grind.
Immediately after it ends, training camp begins. Soon, teams are playing preseason games, after which the regular-season grind begins. If your team is lucky, there's playoff hockey after that. There's hardly a moment to rest, and that's exactly how they like it.
But rookie camp is different this year.

Brooklyn Beckham and Nicola Peltz have got fans talking.

The Miami Hurricanes move to 2-0 after drubbing the FAMU Rattlers 77-7 on Thursday night at Hard Rock Stadium. I predicted Miami by 40+ and clearly that was an easy take.
Diatribe coming, skip ahead: I greatly appreciate what the FCS games do for the FCS athletic departments, essentially the payoff keeps the schools afloat for the year, however these games need to be recalibrated. I was bored halfway through the first quarter and went to sleep at halftime.
My suggestion is to move these games to Week Zero, treat it like a preseason game ie. it doesn't count, and still pay the teams the fee to come and play. That would give FSU a chance to check their light system, and everyone else a chance to simulate the game day experience with a lower ticket price while still being televised. The fact that your season ticket package includes this boring game, in addition to Central Michigan, would feel like robbery to me. OK- DIATRIBE OVER.
The Canyonero Keys to Victory main theme was to drive over a team ranked in the 200's in SP+ and throw it in reverse and back over them again. Miami did just that and we're all ready to move on to real opponents now. The three keys were:
1- Don't get **** y, stick to the plan. Miami pounded the rock three times on the opening drive and it was capped by a Mark Fletcher TD. The 'Canes plan was to get the run game going and the Darian Mensah to his receivers connection fresh. It worked.

Rising featherweights will collide at the Meta APEX this fall.
At UFC Fight Night 293, Austin Bashi and Lucas Brennan will look to regain momentum against one another in Las Vegas.
Two people with knowledge of the matchup recently informed MMA Junkie of the booking but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.
Bashi (14-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) entered the UFC with much hype but has encountered mixed results. He lost his debut to Christian Rodriguez, but bounced back with a win over John Yannis. In July, Bashi lost a hard-fought battle against Jose Delgado, who is now considered a contender at featherweight.
Brennan (11-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC) gained notoriety for his nine-fight stint in Bellator during which he went undefeated. After a loss in PFL, Brennan departed the promotion and went to the regional scene. After a 2-1 run there, the UFC picked him up in April. He lost his debut to Francis Marshall by unanimous decision. Brennan is a second generation UFC fighter, being the son of promotional alumnus Chris Brennan.

The European Central Bank is likely to deliver a 25 basis-point rate hike at its meeting concluding today. But while the direction of travel may be clear for now, the path beyond September is anything but.
The ECB is likely to keep its powder dry beyond today, with the path thereafter determined by how the economy and, above all, inflation respond to the renewed energy shock. The key message from the Governing Council is therefore likely to be hawkish: further hike(s) may be warranted if inflation risks intensify, but policymakers will want to retain flexibility rather than pre-commit to any specific policy path.
There is only modest evidence so far that inflation expectations are becoming less firmly anchored, although there may be growing concern that second-round effects may eventually turn a temporary energy shock into a more persistent inflation problem. The challenge for the ECB is that the economy has so far proven more resilient than expected, making an upside revision to its growth projections probable. Output rose more than anticipated during the second quarter, and business surveys are suggesting solid momentum ahead.
That resilience matters. A weaker economy would give policymakers more room to look through an energy-driven inflation spike. A more robust economy, by contrast, makes it harder to ***** ume that higher energy prices may simply wash through absent affecting wages, services prices and broader inflation behaviour.
Euro area headline inflation rose to 3.3% year on year last month (Figure 1), although the easing in core inflation to 2.4% does offer some reassurance. Underlying inflation measures have stayed comparatively moderate, wage pressures are still contained and there is, as yet, only sparse evidence that the energy shock is generating widespread second-round effects.

A leaked phone call that appears to feature Gypsy Rose Blanchard and her ex-husband, Ryan Anderson, has raised serious questions about a private conversation the former couple allegedly had while he was working at a school. The ****** ually suggestive audio appears to capture Blanchard and Anderson discussing whether he could participate in an intimate phone exchange from inside the building. Anderson has since pushed back against the speculation, insisting in a TikTok video that he "never" engaged in ****** ual activity at the school.

The audio, which has circulated on social media, begins with Anderson asking Blanchard what she is wearing, but she seemingly brushes off the question. "Oh fine, tomorrow," Anderson responds.
The former couple can then be heard giggling before Anderson appears to express concern about getting caught. "I wish; I don't want to get in trouble," he says.
Blanchard responds by suggesting he would be able to remain quiet. "If you didn't make a sound at your mom's, you're not gonna make a sound at school," she is heard saying.

Pete Davidson has spoken about losing his father on September 11 for much of his adult life, sometimes seriously and sometimes through comedy. Becoming a father himself has changed the way he understands what happened.
Davidson was seven when his father, New York City firefighter Scott Matthew Davidson, died while responding to the World Trade Center attacks. "I thought, 'Oh, he was an old guy. He's 33,'" Davidson told the New York Post. "But now I'm there, and I have a kid, and that would be like my kid not having her dad."
Davidson is 32 and turns 33 in November, putting him close to the age his father was when he died. His daughter, Scottie Rose Hewitt Davidson, was born in December 2025 and was named after the grandfather she will never meet.
That combination made the 25th anniversary especially difficult. Davidson said this year felt "way harder" than it had in a long time, but also "extra beautiful" because he would spend September 11 with Scottie. "It'll be very healing and special," he said.
Scott Davidson was 33 when he died and had been an FDNY firefighter since 1994. He worked with Ladder Company 118 in Brooklyn Heights and responded after the second hijacked plane struck the World Trade Center. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation remembers him as a father who coached Pete in football and baseball, watched daughter Casey's dance recitals and frequently called firefighting "the greatest job in America."

Pete Davidson is spending the 25th anniversary of his father Scott Davidson's death on 9/11 as a father himself for the first time.
The Saturday Night Live alum, 32, spoke about his dad's death to the New York Post in an interview published on Tuesday, September 8. According to the outlet, he's still figuring out how to one day talk about the New York City firefighter's death with his daughter, Scottie, who he and ex-girlfriend Elsie Hewitt welcomed into the world in December.
"Luckily, I have some time," the comedian told the publication. "Honestly, this year is way harder than it's been in a really long time because I have Scottie, and now I'm the age that my dad was when he died. So I'm just kind of like, 'Holy [expletive].'"

However, Pete is looking forward to sharing more about his father with his child, noting, "I have old videos and pictures and stuff, and I'm excited to share the classic stories I have of him with her."

The financial realities of college athletics have long forced programs like Florida A&M to schedule what are kindly called "guarantee games" against powerhouse opponents like the No. 7 Miami Hurricanes Thursday night.
Playing two games on three days rest at Hard Rock Stadium, the overmatched Rattlers were buried by UM 77-7 in a money game as the Hurricanes set a school record for yards and tied the mark for points in a game. The contest was so one-sided that the teams agreed to shave five minutes off the fourth quarter, setting the clock for 10 minutes instead of the standard 15.
FAMU (1-2), which lost to fellow HBCU South Carolina State on Sunday at Hard Rock Stadium, was paid $760,000 by Miami (2-0) to play Thursday night's matchup. The guarantee package included $40,000 to cover travel expenses for the Rattlers' nationally renowned Marching 100 band.
The outcome, however, left many FAMU fans questioning on social media whether the financial payoff justifies the cost. While guarantee games can provide much-needed revenue for athletic departments, critics argue the payouts often come at the expense of player safety, roster depth and the program's public image.
"I don't care about these money games for HBCUs" pastor and lobbyist Darrick McGhee posted on Facebook. "We must stop. Not sure how these games build our teams or players."

Defense attorneys for the New Jersey man accused of killing Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother in an August 2024 crash will retest their client's blood from that night.
Sean Higgins, 44, appeared Sept. 11 via video conference in Salem County Superior Court, where he faces charges including reckless vehicular homicide and aggravated manslaughter in connection with the Aug. 29, 2024, deaths of Gaudreau, 31, and his brother Matthew Gaudreau, 29.
The Sept. 11 video conference happened a day after attorneys and the judge met to discuss procedural issues, Judge Michael Silvanio said. Defense attorney Richard Klineburger III said the issues have to do with data and diagrams from state police, including a crash reconstruction report and blood testing.
Depending on the evidence prosecutors share and the results of the new blood test, the defense might ask for a hearing to determine whether to exclude evidence or witness testimony at trial, Klineburger said.
Silvanio declined to issue any orders, saying prosecutors and defense attorneys have shown a good-faith effort.

Lily Reynolds enjoyed a tremendous first full season pitching on the varsity level as a sophomore for Colonie in 2026.
Before her final two high schools seasons, Reynolds has already provided longtime University at Albany softball coach Chris Cannata her verbal commitment to pitch for the Great Danes of the America East Conference.
"I just realized that I wanted to stay home and be around my family. That was really the big deciding factor for me - not necessarily the D-I label," Reynolds said of her decision.
"She called me (Wednesday) and I told her this is the best news ever," said Colonie coach Kelly Colvin, who played at Shenendehowa and UAlbany. "Lily has put in so much hard work with us at Colonie and with the (Capital District) Fusion. It is really cool to see it pay off for her. We're all very excited."
During her sophomore season, Reynolds compiled a 7-2 record with a 1.61 earned run average and 115 strikeouts over 91 1/3 innings for the Wolf Pack. She was named to the Times Union all-star team as a first-team selection.

Marcus Thompson: I feel like they include him in the process. He's aware of what's going on. His voice matters, and as long as that's the case, Steph is fine. He's going to hold their feet to the fire; he's going to make sure they're sticking to it. The Warriors want to win. They are thirsty to win. So their match made heaven that way. As you can see, they tried to get every star out there. They failed, but... I mean, that's what it is at the end of a run, right? It's not going to be pretty. This was probably as best as you can hope for. Hopefully Jimmy Butler comes back for them, and they can make another run, and maybe upset somebody, maybe give it one last valiant effort. What more can you ask for? They want four championships. I think Steph is good enough to stay in the game to where it's like, okay, if you get him the right pieces and get him in a matchup, he'll scare somebody. Now, ideally, they can get somebody good enough to make him like the No. 2. So, he's not carrying everything. That's just hard to do when the two oldest people on the team are making, you know, $120 million. It's tough to not go and get another player who's better than both of them.

The start of school and brisk air mean one thing: September's arrival. While many clamor for the return of football, NHL fans set their sights on a harder-hitting sport. Hockey returns Sept. 19, 2026, with preseason action. The preseason helps ease rosters back into hockey's rigors. But it also creates opportunities for players to make a main NHL roster.
Rookie Camp, an earlier event, also creates a path for younger players to make a roster. For the Utah Mammoth, this year's Rookie Camp is important.
On Sept. 11-15, prospects like Tij Iginla, Gabe Smith, and Caleb Desnoyers can showcase their growth. All play with a singular goal: make the team. The question is: who makes the roster? To get to the bottom of this mystery, the Lead booked an exclusive interview with Mammoth radio play-by-play voice, Mike Folta.
Rookie Camp roster is set.

The chances of Cardinals running back Jeremiyah Love making his NFL debut against the Chargers on Sunday are looking pretty strong.
Head coach Mike LaFleur said at a press conference that Love is "trending well" ahead of the team's final practice of the week. Love injured his ankle in the team's first preseason game and has been a limited participant in practice this week. The Cardinals will issue their last injury report after Friday's practice.
Love said on Thursday that he will "fight my hardest to be out there every game this season," but said he did not know where that would happen this weekend.
The Cardinals made Love the third overall pick in this year's draft. He'll share running back duties with Tyler Allgeier to kick off his time in the league.

Tucker Kraft remains one of the Green Bay Packers' biggest unresolved situations heading into Week 1. Green Bay has yet to reach an agreement on a contract extension with the young tight end, while the team also awaits a timetable for Josh Jacobs' potential NFL discipline amid his legal issues.
Adam Schefter weighed in on Kraft's contract talks with Green Bay, urging the tight end to think twice before walking away from guaranteed money that could be available to him.
"He's coming off a torn ACL and the Packers have a relatively strong offer out there. I think it's hard coming off an ACL to turn down real money," the NFL ****** yst commented during his appearance on The Pat McAfee show.
