COLUMBIA — The South Carolina football game against Towson has been stopped and delayed due to weather.
The Gamecocks (1-0) are hosting Towson (0-2) on Sept. 12 in Williams-Brice Stadium but lighting struck around 9:05 p.m. ET, pausing the game for the time being.
The score is currently 24-3 with 12:07 left in the third quarter.
Per program policy, "Should a lightning strike occur within 8 miles of the stadium, play will be stopped immediately. Play will resume 30 minutes after the last strike occurs within the 8-mile threat radius."
According to The Weather Channel, storms are suppose to continue until roughly 10:15 ET as of now.

Florida basketball senior guard Denzel Aberdeen is taking his case to return to the basketball court to the judicial courts.
Aberdeen has filed a temporary injunction for a fifth season of eligibility to play for the Florida Gators, according to a report from the Field of 68.
"Denzel Aberdeen, a senior at Florida, should be allowed to compete as a student-athlete under the NCAA's 5-in-5 rule," Aberdeen's attorney, Jesse Panuccio, said in a statement provided to the Field of 68. "But the NCAA has announced an unwritten exception to its rule that strips Class of 2022 students from this policy, even though they competed for years against fifth-, sixth-, and sometimes seventh-year seniors who received Covid-era eligibility waivers. The NCAA's decision violates its contractual commitment to fairness to all student-athletes, and we have sued to vindicate Aberdeen's rights and get him back on the court as he finishes his degree at UF."
As a member of the Class of 2022, Aberdeen wasn't grandfathered into the NCAA's new 5-for-5 rule, which allows for college athletes to play for five seasons within five years of eligibility.
On July 31, a Colorado court ruling by U.S. District Court judge Charlotte Sweeney (Tyson, Wisne v NCAA) granted an extra year of eligibility to Aberdeen and every athlete in the 2022 class without requiring an NCAA waiver. But on August 22, the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals granted a stay in the Wisne ruling, which now places the onus back on athletes to fight for their NCAA eligibility in state courts.

Florida A&M football has been forced to make a quarterback change after starter Isaiah Knowles was ruled out for the season with a thumb injury.
Backup Dustin Fletcher led the Rattler offense on the field for their first possession against the Miami Hurricanes on Thursday, Sept. 10, for a Week 2 "money game" at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.
Fletcher replaces Knowles, who left Sept. 6's 31-13 Orange Blossom Classic loss against the third quarter after hurting his right throwing hand after taking a hit from a South Carolina State defender. Fletcher subbed in and completed 6-of-8 passes for 68 yards.
And now, he's responsible for operating head coach Quinn Fordham Gray Sr.'s offense against the defending College Football Playoff runners-up and No. 7-ranked team in the USA TODAY top 25.

The New York Jets didn't draft David Bailey third overall to be a developmental player, he was drafted him to make an immediate impact. ESPN believes that's exactly what's about to happen.
In ESPN's 2026 rookie season guide, it is projected that Bailey will finish as the NFL's rookie sack leader. ESPN forecasted eight sacks for the Jets' edge rusher, placing him ahead of Tampa Bay Buccaneers defender Rueben Bain Jr. (6) and Los Angeles Chargers EDGE Akheem Mesidor (5).
The estimation is another sign of the expectations surrounding Bailey as he prepares for his first NFL season.
The Jets entered the offseason looking for pass-rush help and found it in the former Texas Tech Red Raiders standout. Bailey quickly impressed throughout training camp and the preseason, flashing the explosiveness and athletic traits that made him one of the top prospects in the 2026 draft class.
An eight-sack season would be a significant accomplishment for any rookie pass rusher, especially one expected to play a major role immediately. It would also provide a major boost to a Jets defense looking to rebound after a disappointing 2025 campaign.

Charlie Woods enjoyed his best finish of the 2026 season this weekend at the Junior Players Championship.
Woods, a senior at the Benjamin School and son of legendary golfer Tiger Woods, shot 71 (1-under) in the final round on Sunday, Sept. 6 at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.
He finished at 1-under overall and tied for eighth across the three-round event. JP Lynch of Austin, Texas won the event at 8-under.
Woods finished his tournament with the type of round that has been characteristic of his tournament appearance, offsetting five birdies with four bogeys. Overall, he carded 14 birdies and 13 bogeys in the event.

Chelsea have moved quickly in the free-agent market, opening discussions with Georginio Wijnaldum after an abrupt and damaging end to their midfield plans. According to Caught Offside, the Blues have made contact as they search for a short-term solution following Enzo Fernandez's £125m move to Manchester City.
The timing is what gives this story its edge. Chelsea had been working to reshape their midfield before the deadline, but those plans fell apart. Fernandez was sold, while a move for Monaco's Lamine Camara broke down late on. That sequence has left Xabi Alonso looking for experience and immediate availability, and Wijnaldum fits both requirements.
The key line from the report is clear, Chelsea have "formally contacted Wijnaldum's representatives to discuss a possible return to the Premier League." For a club that has largely built around youth, this is a notable shift. Kickoff between the Vols and Paladins is slated for 3:30 p.m. EDT at Neyland Stadium. The game can be watched on SEC Network+.
Saturday will mark the third meeting between Tennessee and Furman in the all-time series, dating to 1941. The Vols have a 2-0 record in previous games contested between the two schools.
Tennessee first played the Paladins on Sept. 20, 1941, winning, 32-6, at Shields-Watkins Field in John Barnhill's debut as the Vols' head coach.

On August 18, St. John's announced the signing of 6-foot-10 forward Reed Bailey, coming from Indiana. Entering his fifth collegiate season, Bailey now looks to put the 2025-26 season behind him and rediscover the form that made him one of the more intriguing players in the transfer portal.
Bailey posted 8.3 points and 3.4 rebounds while shooting 57% from the field last season at Indiana. After playing in a system that didn't maximize his strengths and being asked to play out of position, Bailey could have a much higher ceiling with the Johnnies.
The former three-star recruit comes from an athletic family. His father, Nathan, played basketball at Navy and Pittsburgh, while his mother, Linda, played volleyball at Pittsburgh. His siblings also competed collegiately across basketball and volleyball. Coming from Harvard, Massachusetts, Bailey wasn't heavily recruited, which ultimately led him to Davidson.
Bailey started all 97 games he played during his three seasons at Davidson. In those three seasons, Bailey was named Atlantic-10 Most Improved Player and First-Team All-Atlantic-10 after the 2024-2025 season. With this proven track record, Bailey became one of the premier transfer recruits, ranking 63rd in the portal, right behind future national champion Elliot Cadeau. Indiana ultimately landed Bailey, attracted by his combination of length, fluidity in transition, and ability to consistently threaten defenses around the paint. Within the Wildcats' offense, Bailey was used primarily as a power forward, working off the ball and serving as an off-ball screener.
Between all the high screens and low block movement, Bailey found himself open a lot, where he was fed his points. But Bailey isn't solely an off-ball player. There were plenty of instances where he received the ball at the top of the key and became the focal point of the offense, initiating the possession himself.

After the Big Ten, the SEC, and the Big 12 acted earlier this week, the ACC has joined the movement to ban pro athletes from returning to college.
In the ACC's case, this applies to the NFL, the NBA, and the WNBA. The Big Ten applied its rule strictly to the NFL, while the SEC moved to ban people from the NBA, WNBA, and NFL, and the Big 12 just banned it all. You professional rowers who thought you were coming back to Oklahoma State? You can suck it!
It would probably be good if the Power 4 coordinated and got the same rule across the board, but at least everyone is mostly on the same page: there is a difference between professional and collegiate athletics.

While Adam McCann-Gibbs feels his journey from Gaelic footballer to college athlete has been like something from a film, the County Down teenager still acknowledges it is surreal to have one of the greatest American football coaches of all time play a leading role in his story.
Bill Belichick, who won six Super Bowls as head coach of the New England Patriots and two as an ******* istant with the New York Giants, swapped the NFL for the college game before last season and this weekend brings his North Carolina Tar Heels to Dublin for their season opener against Texas Christian University.
McCann-Gibbs, the team's punter who will be making his debut at this level should he feature at the Aviva Stadium, only took up the sport in recent years and is still learning its nuances. Few, of course, are more detail-orientated than Belichick with the former Down minor keen to soak up whatever he can from the 74-year-old.
"You're blown away whenever he goes up in a team meeting. Everyone shuts up really quickly and you're able to feed off his knowledge of the game," said McCann-Gibbs.
"It's just incredible. I might not understand everything yet but I'm learning from the guy that's at the top of his game."

Two Indianapolis Colts position groups are ranked in the top five of the NFL entering the 2026 season.
ESPN's Mike Clay recently went through and ranked each position group from 1 to 32. Coming in at No. 1 was the Colts' running back room, led by Jonathan Taylor.
The depth of this position has its unknowns, with the Colts likely relying on rookie seventh-round pick Seth McGowan to be the No. 2 option, but Taylor's production and ability to shoulder a heavy workload put the Colts' running back unit at the top of Clay's list.
"He's one of the league's best backs and handles a massive bulk of the team's touches," wrote Clay. "Taylor had a terrific 2025 campaign in which he led the NFL in carries (323) and touchdowns (18), while also finishing third in rushing yardage (1,585). Once a minimal part of the Colts' passing game, Taylor also ranked the top-10 among backs in routes, targets, catches and receiving yards, setting career highs in each."
Taylor is the engine for the Colts' offense. With a strong and steady run game to lean on, that keeps the Colts out of predictable long down-and-distance situations and opens up the playbook for Steichen.

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Deshaun Watson has won the competition to be the Cleveland Browns starting quarterback for the Sept. 13 opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars, a person familiar with the move told The ***** ociated Press on Monday.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because coach Todd Monken has not publicly announced the move.
Watson, a 10-year veteran, won the competition over Shedeur Sanders as both split reps with the first unit throughout the offseason, training camp and the preseason.
The decision will not be popular with Browns fans, who have booed Watson repeatedly during his time in Cleveland.
Monken said Sunday that Watson's comments after the Browns' 31-7 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Saturday were not expected to play a deciding factor in his final decision.

In Week 2 of the preseason, the Philadelphia Eagles aren't looking for a game filled with individual highlights. They need evidence of something. They'd like to learn whether the progress they've seen during training camp can carry over from one evaluation period to the next.
Their preseason debut was a snoozer. Another road trip followed, and in the first joint practice vs. the New England Patriots, Mike Vrabel's squad was deemed 'the winners'. Philadelphia took the checkered flag at the end of the second, and that makes Saturday night's second preseason game against the Patriots particularly useful for several players who entered the week with something to prove.
The joint practices provided an opportunity to compete against unfamiliar players in a controlled setting. The game will produce fewer fireworks. Of that, we can be certain, but every opportunity is needed. Philadelphia can show any momentum they gained wasn't simply a product of one good day.
Some pass the first game off by saying, 'It's only the preseason', but players and coaches both stated they want better showings. For some of these Eagles, the stakes are particularly high. A few are competing for roster spots, while others are trying to establish themselves in roles that remain unsettled. Here are six players who have something positive to build on heading into the second preseason game.
Hollywood Brown needed a week like this. After a relatively quiet start to training camp, the veteran receiver found more opportunities with the first-team offense and took advantage of them. That doesn't mean his roster spot is secure, particularly with the Eagles still sorting through the back end of their receiver room, but it does mean Brown has given the organization something to consider.

When the Olympics come to Los Angeles in 2028, the USA taking home a gold medal in men's basketball is far from a sure thing — the world is catching up fast with the five-time reigning gold medal winners.
The two biggest threats to take that gold away from the USA are France, led by Victor Wembanyama, and Serbia, led by Nikola Jokic. Those two countries met Thursday in a friendly prep game for upcoming World Cup qualifying, and Jokic put on a show with 20 points, nine rebounds and eight ****** ists to lead Serbia to the 90-87 win.
Wembanyama had a tougher time, scoring 10 points, shooting 1-of-6 from 3-point range, but he had his moments as well.
After the game, Jokic had the highest of praise for Wembanyama.

PORTLAND, Maine — Red Sox left fielder Roman Anthony will play in a baseball game Tuesday for the first time in three-and-a-half months.
Anthony will serve as the designated hitter and bat second as he begins a rehab ******* ignment with Double-A Portland. First pitch at Hadlock Field against Reading is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
"I was driving here today, and it just felt weird to finally be here," Anthony said. "A long process for me and took a lot longer than I could have expected when I first did it. But I'm happy that it's all behind me and I can just play baseball."

Every so often, the six children of Jerry Buss that make up the family trust have a public dispute over the Los Angeles Lakers that reminds us how little they see eye-to-eye when it comes to their father's vision for the team he bought in 1979.
The latest instance came Monday when ESPN's Shams Charania reported the Buss siblings agreed to sell their remaining 17.8 percent stake in the Lakers as part of Mark Walters' sale to Joshua Kushner and Bob Iger, effectively removing Jeanie Buss as governor of the team... only for an attorney for Jeanie to write a letter contesting the sell.
"This is just the latest instance of a years-long pattern whereby Joey and Jesse Buss leak false, defamatory and pernicious 'information' to Mr. Charania for the malicious purpose of doing harm to the Los Angeles Lakers so long as Dr. Buss's chosen successor, Jeanie Buss, carries out her father's wishes," the letter read.
In essence, a year after the Buss' sold their majority stake to Walter -- a process many of the siblings were frustrated by and one that allowed Jeanie to remain governor through 2030 -- the siblings have now voted to sell their remaining stake without the blessing of Jeanie. Thus, we're headed for another public family feud.
And can they please spare us this time? I would love nothing more than if the Buss' could settle their differences privately for once.

The Athletics began the week with a Monday night matchup against the Kansas City Royals in the first game of this four-game series. The A's dropped the series opener 9-5 in another game where a poor performance from the Green and Gold's starting pitcher's put them in an unrecoverable hole. The team's offense battled back but ultimately came up short.
The A's offense got to Royals starter Michael Wacha immediately. First baseman Jeff McNeil hit the first pitch of the game over the right-field fence. His sixth home run of the season and fourth career leadoff homer put the visitors up 1-0 before most fans had found their seats. The A's had a chance to score more, but Carlos Cortes grounded into the first of two inning-ending double plays he hit into in this game.
A's starter Mason Barnett, pitching against the franchise that drafted him, allowed the Royals to answer right back. In his first game back from the injured list, Maikel Garcia's RBI single scored Bobby Witt Jr. to tie the game at 1. Barnett was unable to stop the bleeding, as Royals designated hitter Salvador Perez hit a two-out, two-run single to put the hosts up 3-1 after the first inning.
Barnett's struggles continued in the bottom of that inning. With one out, Witt Jr. hit his 15th home run of the season, a two-run shot to left center field, extending Kansas City's lead to 5-1.
In the bottom of the third, Kyle Isbel's two-out RBI single brought home the Royals' sixth run of the night and ended Barnett's outing. The A's right-hander allowed six runs on seven hits, four walks, two wild pitches and one home run over just 2 2/3 innings. The Royals went 4-for-6 with runners in scoring position against the A's starter.

Kyle Leahy, Cardinals, 39% (@ CIN, @ PHI): The Cardinals tend to save this column during down weeks, as their rotation ranks ninth in baseball in ERA despite lacking a member who is rostered in 50% of Yahoo leagues. After a slow start in his first season as a rotation member, Leahy has been the team's most consistent starter of late, having logged a 1.52 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 46:9 K:BB ratio in his past nine starts. Although he has been more effective at home (2.91 ERA) than on the road (3.96 ERA), he should have success in two road starts against the Phillies and Reds, who rank 16th and 29th respectively in OPS vs. righties.
Andre Pallante, Cardinals, 38% (@ CIN, @ PHI): Although Leahy has been the Cardinals most reliable starter this summer, Pallante is the rotation member who has been the most consistent throughout the season (3.46 ERA, 1.22 WHIP). The righty lacks the strikeout skills to be a high-end fantasy contributor but maintains a significant floor thanks to his elite groundball rate (55.6%). In a poor week for two-start pitchers, he can be started in any format.
Tyler Mahle, Braves, 30% (@ MIN, @ MIL): Mahle has been terrific across two starts as a member of the Braves, posting a 16:2 K:BB ratio, along with a 0.75 ERA and 0.75 WHIP. But we can't overlook the fact that his 18 outings with the Giants resulted in a 5.13 ERA and 1.39 WHIP. It's worth noting that the ERA estimators don't mind Mahle, ******* igning him marks in the range of 4.00 this season. The right-hander is set to tangle with two top 10 offenses in terms of OPS versus righties, but his success with Atlanta should still get him a look in 12-team leagues.

Aaron Donald has worked out for the Los Angeles Rams for a second time as the clock ticks on the future Hall of Famer's decision on whether or not to return to football.
The Rams listed Donald as a workout participant on Sunday's NFL transaction wire, a day after their preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs. No other information about his workout was initially released.
Donald previously worked out with the Rams on Aug. 5, confirming reports that he was considering coming out of retirement. Rams head coach Sean McVay has since spoken glowingly of Donald's first workout while attempting to temper expectations on whether or not he actually plays again.
Following Saturday's 20-12 win over the Chiefs, McVay emphasized that he's not putting deadline pressure on Donald to make a decision.
"What I don't want is to sit here and do is put a timeline on it, then something comes up where I have to push it back," McVay told reporters per the team transcript. "What I have said to him is that we have some loose things that I have identified, like dates that we would like to hit.

Just a few days ago, the Pittsburgh Steelers kicked off their 2026 season with an impressively lopsided 28-9 victory over the Green Bay Packers. While we must acknowledge that neither team featured its star players, nor the type of playcalling we can expect once the games start to count for real, it's also hard to introduce yourself to a new fanbase in a more impressive fashion than Mike McCarthy and his staff did on Thursday night.
This is going to be quite a meaty post with several clips to share and examine, so let's not beat around the bush. The following are highlights and lowlights of my impressions from the game. There's going to be a lot of positives we'll look at from this game, so let's start off with a dose of negativity before we wash things down with what went well.
The Steelers offensive line got off to a tough start on Thursday before settling in once both teams' reserves took over. Collectively, the Steelers allowed 10 pressures and 3 sacks in pass protection. Four of those pressures were at the hands of the starting lineup — Troy Fautanu (2), Mason McCormick (1), and Dylan Cook (1) — and a fifth pressure was credited to running back Travis Homer, who started the game with both Jaylen Warren and Rico Dowdle in street clothes for this game. The rushing attack managed just 2.7 yards per carry. And Fautanu was tagged for both a false start penalty and an offensive holding call.
It certainly wasn't a pristine showing for the unit.

From playcalls to casting calls?
Cincinnati Bengals rookie cornerback Ceyair Wright signed with the team as an undrafted free agent this offseason, after a five-year college career that saw him take snaps with USC and Nebraska. The next snap he hears, though, may come from a clapperboard.
According to reports, Wright has left the Bengals to pursue an acting role. Wright previously acted in "Space Jam: A New Legacy" as LeBron James' son. He has several other acting credits, including roles in the TV series "2 Broke Girls" and "Training Day."
The Bengals announced that Wright "left the team to pursue other opportunities." Head coach Zac Taylor spoke a bit more on Wright's decision to leave the team.
"I know it was a difficult decision for him, I think two of the things he was really passionate about were colliding, and he decided to pursue this opportunity," Taylor said Saturday.
