MILWAUKEE (AP) — Garrett Mitchell hit the Brewers' first grand slam of the season, one of four homers for Milwaukee in a 20-0 rout of the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night that clinched a playoff spot for the majors' best team.
William Contreras, Bryce Turang and Jake Bauers also went deep for the Brewers (92-56), who have a commanding lead in the NL Central but for now are **** ured of at least a wild-card spot. They lead second-place Chicago by 10 games in the division, and their magic number to clinch that **** le is four.

The U-20 team secured qualification for the 2nd round of the Copa do Brasil on Thursday afternoon (10) by defeating Cuiabá 4-3 in a penalty shootout in a single-leg match held at CT Rei Pelé! In regular time, the game ended 1-1, with a goal by Contreras!

The Boston Red Sox did not have many reasons to feel good after Wednesday's 8-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners, but the initial news on Ceddanne Rafaela appears encouraging. Rafaela was removed after the sixth inning because of quad tightness. Interim manager Chad Tracy indicated the move was precautionary, especially with the Red Sox trailing 8-1 at the time.
"Ceddanne Rafaela exited today with quad tightness," The Boston Globe's Tim Healey reported after speaking with Tracy. "He tried to keep playing, but in a blowout, the Red Sox decided it wasn't worth it."
Rafaela finished 1-for-3 before Eli White replaced him in center field. The fact that Rafaela attempted to remain in the game suggests Boston is not immediately anticipating an extended absence. He should still be considered day to day entering Thursday's series opener against the Baltimore Orioles.

Milwaukee used a 13-hit attack to restore its eight-game lead in the NL Central over Chicago, bouncing back nicely after losing 17-3 to the Cubs in the opener of the four-game series. The Mets entered Thursday night's game with an eye on winning the series. They had Sean Manaea getting the start to try and accomplish that goal. They faced a major obstacle though–not only were they facing the best team in baseball, they were facing the best team in baseball's Cy Young frontrunner ace in Jacob Misiorowski.
The game had barely even started and it immediately went sideways for Manaea and the Mets. The first two batters reached on a single and a walk, then a one-out Andrew Vaughn single drove in the first run of the game. Gary Sánchez hit into a force-out for the second out that also drove in the second run of the game. Manaea was able to get out of it after that but the Mets were already in an early hole.
Manaea dug the hole deeper in the second inning. He got two outs to start the inning and looked like he might be settling down. But a David Hamilton single was followed by a Jackson Chourio home run to put the Mets behind by four runs. And a comeback would be difficult with Misiorowski on the mound.
The game was quiet until the fifth inning. In the top of the fifth, Chourio started with a single then stole second base to put another runner in scoring position for the Brewers. Luis Lara moved Chourio to third on another single, and William Contreras grounded out but still drove in Chourio for the Brewers' fifth run of the game.
It took until the bottom of the fifth for the Mets to even log a hit against Misiorowski, but once they did it was off to the races. Luis Robert Jr. started the inning with a walk, then he was driven in as the Mets' first run of the game on the Mets' first hit of the game, a Jared Young double. After two outs, Christopher Morel hit a single that brought Jared Young in to score (though there was a lengthy review, it was eventually upheld). Francisco Alvarez grounded out to end the inning, but the Mets cut the deficit to three runs.

The Red Sox took care of business by securing the series win in Miami Tuesday night. As a result, Boston kept Adley Rutschman and Willson Contreras off their feet Wednesday night as the Marlins, still in the NL Wild Card race, salvaged the finale with a 4-0 final. Things will get a little easier — although not quite easy — against Atlanta's starting pitcher for today's game, Martín Pérez. The 35-year-old Pérez doesn't throw hard (89.3 mph average fastball velocity this year), but he's hung around in the majors since 2012 thanks to his ability to limit barrels and induce ground ******* . He's having the second-best season of his career, with a 3.15 ERA and 133 ERA+, although — as you might expect from someone with that profile — his 4.14 FIP is quite a bit worse.

Contreras turned a 1-0 deficit into a 3-1 lead with a mammoth three-run home run off Giants All-Star Logan Webb that easily cleared the Green Monster — and perhaps a couple of buildings behind it. Contreras' homer left his bat at 116 mph and had a final projected distance of 452 feet. It was both the hardest- and farthest-hit ball by a Red Sox batter in 2026.
"It was hit a ton," said interim manager Chad Tracy. "He hit it really good."
Trailing 1-0 after a Bryce Eldridge RBI single in the top of the inning, the Red Sox got to Webb with two outs in the third. Slugger Rafael Devers got a mixed reaction in his return to Fenway Park - lots of boos when he was announced and during his first at-bat, but many cheers during a between-innings video tribute. Then Devers hit a blast to dead center in the fourth, cutting Boston's lead to one, and the boos got the edge. Devers went back-to-back with Drew Gilbert, not a slugger type, who slipped a two-run shot down the right-field line.
That wasn't quite enough in an eventual 6-4 loss to the onrushing Red Sox. Logan Webb, so sharp this month, with an ERA under 1.00 and 17 strikeouts to just two walks, succumbed to the same issues that have plagued many of the team's younger starters. He walked three and hit two, leading to three Boston runs. He also gave up a 116 mph laser of a three-run homer by Willson Contreras (the answer at first base for the Red Sox when Devers wasn't).
Giants infielder Christian Koss, traded a little more quietly than Devers was when he went from Boston to San Francisco for cash at the end of spring training in 2024, singled, doubled and scored twice against the club that gave up on him when he still had an option remaining. Then Logan Webb walked out for the bottom half and things fell apart in about 22 pitches. Hit batters, walks, hits, runs, all of it cascading at once.

Last year, there was a highly anticipated pitching matchup between Jacob Misiorowski and Paul Skenes. The matchup was hyped for days and it was a sellout game at American Family Field. This afternoon, we will have a similar matchup. Jacob Misiorowski is on the mound again, facing off against another Cy Young winner, this time in Atlanta Braves ace Chris Sale.
There will be strikeouts, there will be high velocity, there will likely not be a lot of runs scored. Misiorowski has a 1.75 ERA on the season while Sale is sitting at a 2.16 ERA.
The Brewers were able to score plenty of runs during their series against the Seattle Mariners on this homestand. It will not be so easy this afternoon, even though the Mariners rotation has put up some very good numbers this year.
Granted, every time you see a matchup of aces and you think runs will be scarce, that game somehow has a way of turning into a 10-8 slugfest. Because that's baseball.

Willson Contreras has been a great addition for the Boston Red Sox this season, but there have been a couple of instances when he has been booed by the fans.
On Aug. 8, he was booed for not running hard on a ground ball, and the same thing happened in the 10th inning of Wednesday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Contreras hit a ground ball to third base as the second batter of the tenth inning and did not run hard to beat it out, resulting in the second out but a run scoring.

The Brewers poured it on the Mariners tonight with 22 hits and 22 runs in a game that became a laugher late. But even discounting the nine runs that Milwaukee scored off of a position player, the offense showed real, positive signs against Mariners starter Bryce Miller and a series of ineffective relievers. On the other side of the ball, Kyle Harrison kept the Mariners off the board for five innings and the bullpen kept it going. What resulted was a historic night: the Brewers matched the largest margin of victory in a shutout in the last 126 years.
Brendan Donovan, the first batter against Harrison tonight, smacked a ball to the base of the wall in the right-field gap for a leadoff double. But Harrison locked in, and even with a wild pitch that advanced Donovan to third, Harrison got managed a scoreless inning with a strikeout, a ground ball to second with a drawn-in infield, and another strikeout. (William Contreras, unfortunately, burned a challenge on a 2-0 pitch with two outs that was almost three inches off the plate, putting Milwaukee behind the eight ball early in that respect.)

It wasn't quite a home run robbery, but it kind of looked like it on TV. Jake Bauers was next, and he ripped a double into the right-field corner, just barely beating out Victor Robles' throw at second. Three pitches later, William Contreras blooped a soft line drive just over shortstop. Bauers looked like dead meat at the plate—Arozarena's throw beat him by a mile—but when Raleigh put a tag on the sliding Bauers, the ball was knocked loose. Bauers hadn't touched the plate and didn't immediately catch that Raleigh didn't have the ball, but he realized in time to just beat the scrambling Mariner catcher back to home plate. Christian Yelich struck out to end the inning but the Brewers had an early lead.

Maria Menounos is a cancer survivor. The Medford native was the third or fourth scheduled Jimmy Fund-supported appearance on tonight's broadcast/telethon, the scheduling of which was impeccable. The Sox pulled ahead and away early and never let up, and the appearance of Menounos and other affected families was more conspicuous on the broadcast than ever, due to the team kicking a lot of ******* . It was inspiring and a reminder that the time will be passed, goshdarnit, and it will occasionally force you to think about things you didn't anticipate, and you learn something.
Then it all comes back to beisbol, and when the Sox go up 9-1 in the 6th, and Maria sez "God is blessing this game," it's hard to disagree. By that point, every Sox starter had an RBI. After a 15-pitch first inning where he abandoned two baserunners, Tarik Skubal was the victim of the Brewers' tenacity with two outs. Jonathan Ornelas lined a single to left before Skubal walked William Contreras to load the bases. Luis Lara hit a soft ground ball to shortstop, but Tommy Edman misplayed the feed from Mookie Betts as Milwaukee struck first again.
