It's never great when you show up to play your local public golf course and find that the superintendent just had the fairways or greens punched—or both. Obviously, it's a necessary part of golf-course maintenance, otherwise you'd eventually be playing on dead grass, but it can wreak havoc on everything from putting to chipping to full-swing irons shots.
If you're new to the game, you should know that there are times when you can repair damage to a golf course. Under Rule 13.1c, for example, you can repair things such as spike marks, ball marks, old hole plugs and animal tracks on a putting green. Rule 16.1b allows you to take relief from abnormal course conditions in the general area.
But here's the thing: The definition of abnormal course conditions does not include aeration holes. If the maintenance crew created a hole after removing turf, a tree or to repair drainage pipes, you absolutely get relief. And the plugs created from punching the aeration holes are considered loose impediments and can be removed. However, the hole itself is considered just a normal part of course maintenance. If your putt is ******* py as a result, or your chip takes a sideways bounce on its way into a green, unfortunately, that is just part of the game.

The Atlanta Braves kicked off the series against the Miami Marlins with a 4-2 win on Tuesday evening. Despite some drama in the later innings, Grant Holmes made the start and pitched a gem. He tossed six scoreless innings, striking out five and giving up a base on ***** .

The Colorado Buffaloes held their first media availability of fall camp after practice Tuesday, with a couple of players and defensive coordinator Chris Marve speaking with the media at Fountain-Fort Carson High School.
Cornerback Cree Thomas and linebacker Gideon Lampron spoke highly of the work the team has put in the first two days and how training away from Boulder has helped make the team closer.
"First day pretty incredible," Lampron said on practicing in Colorado Springs. "Not a lot of teams are fortunate to do this. Great for team building."

The Atlanta Falcons' sixth training camp practice generated a wide range of emotions from the fans. The day began with the team signing Bijan Robinson to a three-year, $75 million extension, and ended with an unfortunate injury to Jalon Walker.
While Walker might be out for the season with what NFL insiders are hinting is a torn ACL, Robinson's extension is still a big win for this Falcons front office
The former Texas Longhorns star has established himself as one of the NFL's best, if not the No. 1 running back in the game, and his new deal pays him as such. Robinson's first three seasons have been as good as anyone could have hoped, and now he's locked in for three additional years.
For The Win writer Cory Woodroof gave the Falcons an "A" grade for Robinson's extension, saying they didn't have much of a choice but to re-sign the 24-year-old.
"The Falcons didn't really have a choice but to extend Robinson for what he was worth," wrote Woodroof. "With Robinson, London, Pitts and guard Matthew Bergeron all agreeing to new deals over the summer, the Falcons can rest on some vital consistency and good play at multiple positions on the offense. Bochum's first season back in the 2. Bundesliga did not unfold as many had hoped, but there is renewed optimism around the Vonovia Ruhrstadion as Uwe Rösler prepares for his first full campaign in charge.
After stabilising the club following a difficult start last season, the former Fortuna Düsseldorf boss now has the opportunity to shape the squad in his own image and guide Bochum towards the upper end of the table.
Bochum's response to relegation began in disastrous fashion. Under Dieter Hecking, they won just one of their opening eight league matches while losing the other seven, leaving the club firmly in the relegation battle.
Rösler arrived in October and quickly transformed Bochum's fortunes. His side lost just one of his first 15 league games in charge, climbing comfortably away from danger and ultimately finishing ninth with 44 points, seven clear of the relegation zone.

One of Dortmund's will-they-won't-they transfers of the summer appears to be going ahead at long last. Per Fabrizio Romano, Dortmund wing-back Yan Couto is set to move to Italy this summer on loan to Como.
Couto joined Dortmund initially on loan from Manchester City in the fall of 2024, with a purchase obligation exercised in the summer of 2026. Across two seasons for BVB, Couto played 62 matches, scoring three goals and **** isting a further three.
These numbers only tell a half story. In his second season, Couto played a mere 997 minutes in the league, falling behind Julian Ryerson in the pecking order at right wing-back. One might think Couto would be perfectly suited to Niko Kovac's five-back system, but unfortunately for Couto, Ryerson's crossing prowess this season made him impossible to leave off the team sheet.
I, for one, am very disappointed to see Couto go in what will likely prove to be a permanent departure. Couto took an enormous leap of faith moving to Dortmund, a completely foreign country and league, and embraced the club with open arms. BVB repaid him, in my opinion, with limited minutes and little reward for the good moments he showed in black and yellow. It always felt as though Couto was an afterthought on the team-sheet despite his impressive CV and potential to bring a different element to the squad, with some time to settle into a role. Dortmund gave Raphaël Guerreiro seven seasons to be a poor defender with tremendous creative ability—I'm not sure why Couto couldn't be afforded just one.
Couto is only 24, and with the buy option seemingly non-obligatory, we may yet see Yan Couto in black and yellow again. Unfortunately, BVB has likely left a poor taste in the Brazilian's mouth, and I wouldn't blame him for leaving it in the past.

Wide receiver Xavier Legette wasn't the only Carolina Panthers pass catcher who made an early exit from practice on Tuesday.
Tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders also had his day ended before the final whistle of this morning's training camp session. Sanders, per head coach Dave Canales, is being evaluated for what appeared to be an ankle injury.
"Yeah, it looked like an ankle—and he wasn't able to finish," Canales told reporters afterwards. "But he had a great day. So we'll evaluate him and see where he's at."
Sanders is entering his third NFL campaign. His second season saw him amass 29 receptions for 190 yards and a touchdown—down from his 33 catches and 342 yards as a rookie in 2024.
His fellow 2024 draftee in Legette, fortunately, was cleared of a concussion following his departure from the workout. Legette, who was carted off during seven-on-seven drills, fell down hard on his head and back while attempting a catch in the back of the end zone.

Giovanni Reyna has left Borussia Mönchengladbach to join French top-flight side Racing Strasbourg. According to Transfermarkt, the transfer fee is €3 million, which is less than what Gladbach paid to sign the United States international from Borussia Dortmund last summer.
After his return from the World Cup, he left Gladbach's training camp to complete his move to Strasbourg. Reyna signed a contract until 2031 as long-term contracts are standard with BlueCo management.
Reyna has only appeared in 19 Bundesliga games for Gladbach. He played 147 games in all competitions for Borussia Dortmund in the previous six seasons. Reyna was part of the United States squad that reached the Round of 16 in the 2026 World Cup.
"Gio (Reyna) is an excellent player who unfortunately only showed glimpses of his potential during his year here. He was unable to consistently demonstrate his ability on the pitch due to several injuries. Unfortunately, the cart has come out yet again during Carolina Panthers training camp.
Per multiple reports from Tuesday morning's practice, third-year wide receiver Xavier Legette came down hard on his head and back while attempting a catch in the back of the end zone during seven-on-seven drills. Legette would be tended to by trainers and was eventually wheeled off from the session.
There is a bit of encouraging news, however—as Legette, according to Mike Kaye Of The Charlotte Observer, got up and walked to the cart under his own power. He also appeared alert and was seen talking.
Carolina, coming into Tuesday, already saw second-year outside linebacker Nic Scourton and rookie wide receiver Chris Brazzell II go down during training camp. Both sustained season-ending knee injuries—an ACL tear for Scourton and an LCL tear for Brazzell.
With Brazzell sidelined, Legette is expected to be the favorite for the third spot in the receiver room behind Tetairoa McMillan and Jalen ******* er.

The Atlanta Braves came into this year's trade deadline needing to upgrade their starting rotation. It's been a banged-up unit, and they cannot rely on Chris Sale and the current options for a World Series run.
They wound up adding Tyler Mahle, but a true bona fide ace would've been a major upgrade for this club. Unfortunately, no such trade happened. But it wasn't for a lack of effort. In fact, it might not even be the Braves' fault that they missed on an ace.
According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Braves made a serious push to acquire Jacob deGrom from the Texas Rangers. With the Rangers willing to make such a trade, the only reason it fell through was thanks to deGrom and his no-trade clause.
"The Braves informed the Rangers of their desire to land deGrom, according to people briefed on the discussions who were offered anonymity for their candor," Rosenthal reports. "The Rangers told deGrom if he wanted to waive his no-trade clause for Atlanta, they would make a deal happen, source said, but deGrom said no, explaining that he wanted to win in Texas."

A man who spent £550 on a huge tattoo declaring England as World Cup 2026 winners has returned to the parlour for a small correction.
Sean Carrington, 36, from Wigan, in Greater Manchester, was so sure that England would win the World Cup that he requested a foot-long trophy homage captioned "England World Cup winners 2026"... two weeks before England were knocked out of the tournament.
Now the roofer has returned to the chair to have an additional line, "Only joking!" inked underneath the original piece.
"I'm more bothered that England hasn't won the World Cup than I am to have a tattoo on my leg," Sean told BBC Radio Manchester. "It's not bothering me. It's just a tattoo."

Pressure on FIFA president Gianni Infantino intensified on Tuesday, with opposition emerging from within world football's governing body as well as from external critics over his since-abandoned proposal to open the World Cup to private investment.
Former **** nal manager **** ne Wenger, appointed in 2019 by Infantino as FIFA's chief of global football development, said in a statement on Tuesday that "the decision to withdraw the project was absolutely necessary and beyond question".
His remarks followed hot on the heels of an extraordinary internal email to FIFA staff, seen by AFP, in which secretary-general Mattias Grafstrom appeared to distance himself from Infantino on the issue.
Previously seen as close to Infantino, Grafstrom describes the fiasco surrounding the plan as "a sad and reproachable series of events".

Chicago Bears training camp has been underway for a week now, but it never truly feels like the beginning of training camp until the pads come on.
The Bears put pads on for the first time on Monday, and they'll also wear them Tuesday and Thursday this week. Before Monday's padded practice, head coach Ben Johnson discussed his love for padded workouts and the intensity during one-on-ones that brings out the best competition.
"We got one-on-ones going on today, I love looking at that 'cause it's our first time to really compete in that type of setting," Johnson said. "You bring out the best of both sides in that dynamic, so I'm looking forward to that, and I think these guys, as you go through the acclimation process, you can kind of feel it, the intensity pick up a little bit, and so I know they're ready for this."
Of course, putting the pads on means more physicality, which can sometimes result in injuries.Unfortunately, that was the case for Chicago as safety Coby Bryant, who was injured during one-on-ones early on in practice. He's now expected to 8-10 weeks after suffering a hyperextended knee, bone bruise and a small fracture, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. Luckily, he is not expected to need surgery.
The bright side of the physicality in training camp with the pads on is this gives the coaching staff their first real chance to see who is doing well and who needs to improve. This will be key in addressing the Bears' position battles, including the competition for the starting left tackle and the starting players in the secondary.

Gianni Infantino has come under more pressure from within Fifa after the governing body's secretary general Mattias Grafstrom described the abandoned World Cup sell-off plans as a "sad and reproachable series of events" in an internal email to staff.
Swedish official Grafstrom, who is one of Fifa's top bosses, did not mention the embattled Fifa president by name but said in his email that while the turmoil surrounding Fifa is "difficult to comprehend and accept.... individuals, unstable moments and unfortunate episodes come and go". After a wild afternoon of transactions at the MLB trade deadline, there was a baseball game to play in New York and the Cardinals showed up like they had something to prove as they knocked Cam Schlittler, a Cy Young candidate, out of the game after just a few innings and Alec Burleson was a big reason why. The problem is that baseball games still last 9 innings which means the Cardinals bullpen will almost always become a factor for better or worse. Fortunately, the St. Louis bats would save the day.
When is the last time that we've been able to share that the St. Louis Cardinals scored in the first four innings of a game? That happened Monday night and was concurrent with Michael McGreevy having a very positive bounce-back outing (for 4 innings). The result was a Cardinals romp in the Big Apple, but it didn't look like it would go the St. Louis way for awhile.
It started in the top of the 1st inning when JJ Wetherholt drew a leadoff walk. Two batters later, he was able to leisurely cross the plate after Alec Burleson jumped on a Cam Schlittler 97 mph four-seam fastball and deposited it into the short right-field porch in Yankee Stadium giving the Cardinals an immediate 2-0 lead.
The Cardinals started the top of the 2nd inning the way they started the top of the 1st with a walk by Nathan Church. José Fermín then found a 96 mph four-seam fastball to his liking and hammered it for a RBI double scoring Church and upping the Cardinals lead to 3-0.
The top of the 3rd inning was profitable for St. Louis, as well. Iván Herrera drew a leadoff walk and then stole second. Three batters later, Nathan Church singled to left scoring Herrera giving the Cardinals an unexpected 4-0 lead. Schlittler would only last 3 innings before he was removed from the game by Yankees manager Aaron Boone.

Sean McVay informed reporters on Monday afternoon that fourth year tight end Davis Allen is dealing with a quad injury in training camp. McVay did not provide a concrete timeline other than the injury is going to require "some time".
In all likelihood, Davis Allen misses at least the next two weeks with it being a soft tissue injury and the Rams typically being conservative with their injuries in training camp.
Allen has steadily carved out a role in Sean McVay's offense over the past several seasons. Whether serving as a reliable blocker, contributing as a pass catcher, or filling in whenever injuries have arisen, he has become a dependable member of the Rams' tight end room. Any missed practice reps can slow momentum, particularly during training camp when timing and chemistry are being refined before the regular season.
Fortunately for Los Angeles, this is one position where the roster is built to withstand a temporary setback.
While any injury to a player is unfortunate, the Rams can afford an injury like this at the tight end position because of the impressive depth they have ******* embled. The Dallas Cowboys have been dealing with their fair share of training camp injuries a week into their trek to Oxnard, CA. Fortunately things have generally landed on the temporary side for most of the affected. On Monday, they had to add another name to the list as tight end Princeton Fant was forced to leave practice.
On the first day of padded work, Fant had to be helped off and eventually he was escorted from the field on a cart. He was injured while blocking edge rusher Sam Williams, who pushed him back into the accelerating running back Israel Abanikanda.
Fant is battling to be a depth piece for the Cowboys at a position without much certainty behind starter Jake Ferguson and No. 2 Brevyn Spann-Ford. Neither of the sure things for the roster offer tremendous offensive potential, leading to a lot of opportunity for TE3 and practice squad depth.
That's where Fant has existed since being an undrafted free agent in 2023 out of Tennessee where he teamed up with current teammate, QB Joe Milton. Fant has spent three seasons on the practice squad, experiencing a couple game-day activations to help when injuries arose, but he's fought to maintain a place on the roster. There was one stretch, in the back half of the 2024 season, where he was fully promoted to the 53-man roster.
This year he's competing with the likes of UDFAs Michael Trigg (Baylor) and DJ Rogers (TCU).

Two days before fall camp begins, LSU quarterback Sam Leavitt has already landed on the watch list for one of the most prestigious awards in all of college football: the Maxwell Award.
