Former Manchester City winger Mark Kennedy believes Erling Haaland is the perfect candidate to take on the captaincy role.
City have jetted off for their pre-season tour of Hong Kong and Seoul, but Enzo Maresca is yet to name the new club captain.
Speaking to BBC Radio Manchester, Kennedy said: "Every time I watch City I see a leader [in Erling Haaland].
"I see someone driving the team forward and someone not giving up. Every time I watch City, he catches my eye in terms of his leadership qualities."
During the 2024-25 campaign, Haaland captained Guardiola's side on occasions, but was not named the outright skipper for his side.

Earlier this week, Manchester City announced that Phil Foden had extended his contract with the club until the summer of 2030. It is clear that City are backing Foden to return to his dazzling best after two tough and trying seasons for him. New City manager Enzo Maresca is aiming to help Foden on that path and if he succeeds, it will help shape Manchester City into a formidable unit.
When Enzo Maresca faced the media yesterday for the first time as Manchester City manager yesterday, he said that he aiming to help Phil Foden return to his best form. The Italian manager added that it is his duty to do so. Speaking on Phil Foden, Maresca said: "I just want to help Phil to be the Phil we all want. First of all for him because he needs to enjoy football and second because I know how good he is. Phil in a good shape and mood, he can win games."
"Treble season he was fantastic, season after he won Player of the Year. He struggled a little bit, but I told him it's my duty to help him. He's from the house. He's from me. He's a City fan."
A big variable over the 2026-27 season for Manchester City is which Phil Foden they will get. Will the 2023-24 Player of the Season Foden return? The hope is that after a summer of rest this is what occurs. Or will Foden continue to be the inconsistent player he has been over the past two seasons? Foden is too good a player to not be a key player for the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders. Hopefully the saying that class is permanent and form is temporary rings true for Foden this season.
Enzo Maresca is determined to help Phil Foden find his best once again. Maresca has worked with Foden previously, and that does give Maresca a template to use to guide Foden. He knows what makes Foden tick, and that should aid Maresca in his quest to help the England international. It seems that is what Maresca is determined to do as he explained yesterday.

Newly appointed Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca shared his thoughts on the ongoing transfer rumours surrounding Rodri and Real Madrid. His statements might come across rather deflating for the Real Madrid fans who want to see Rodri at the Bernabeu.
“Around big players there is always speculation. I’m not worried about that, I think it’s normal. I think every manager wants to have Rodri, because he’s a top player,” Maresca said.
“Now, surgery on Monday. He needs holidays, he needs to rest, he needs to recover. Then he will be back here with us.”
Rodri had delayed the surgery for the World Cup. He was named the best player of the tournament as he led Spain to their second World Cup. It is now going to be a long summer. There are different reports about Real Madrid’s interest in Rodri almost every day. The player is now going on holidays, as confirmed by his current manager. The saga could drag on into the last few days of the transfer window.

Former Manchester City captain Paul Lake hopes Jack Grealish will be "given an opportunity" under new manager Enzo Maresca, as he believes the left winger brings "great attitude and personality".
The club triggered a £100m release clause to prise Grealish away from boyhood club Aston Villa in August 2021. Since then, he has won three Premier Leagues, the Champions League, the FA Cup, the Super Cup and the Club World Cup at Eithad Stadium.
However, after dropping out of Pep Guardiola's starting XI, the 30-year-old joined Everton on a season-long loan for the 2025-26 campaign in search of first-team minutes.
Speaking on BBC Radio Manchester, Lake said: "There is no reason why it can't happen. All of these players have got their own egos.
"Jack Grealish will say: 'Of course I can play in that team, I've done it before and I can do it again.' He does bring something different. He has experience, so he can deliver in high-pressure moments.

Provided that everything goes according to plan for Vitor Reis this preseason, the young centre-back should be set for a role at Manchester City this season. After arriving at City from Palmeiras in the January 2025 transfer window and spending six months around the first team, Reis spent last season on loan at Girona. Vitor Reis' time playing in La Liga was well spent. He now seems set to compete for first team football at the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders. In a recent interview, Vitor Reis spoke on the lessons he has learned to date as he prepares to make an impression during Manchester City's preseason.
In an interview with ESPN Brasil, Vitor Reis has spoken on the experience he has gained, first at Manchester City, and from playing regularly with Girona in La Liga during the 2025-26 season. Speaking on how much he learned during his brief spell at City, and who encourages him, Reis said: "City has a great squad and excellent players. I learned a lot during my first spell there, especially from Rúben Dias, who encourages me a lot, and Haaland himself, who is one of the top strikers in world football."
Last season Vitor Reis was sent out on loan to Girona. The hope was that Reis would establish himself as first team regular at Girona. He did exactly that and was one of Girona's best performing players in a season that saw Girona relegated. The young Brazilian defender explained that playing in La Liga helped him grow as an overall player. He explained: "Playing in La Liga helped a lot because I managed to have a good run of games in a very strong and competitive league. Playing regularly makes a difference and I felt a huge improvement last season with Girona. Facing great players like Vini Jr , Yamal , Mbappé and Bellingham requires maximum concentration."
Spending a season playing in Spain was exactly what Vitor Reis needed for his development. He was able to play regularly and grow as a defender. With how Girona played out from the back, Vitor Reis' composure in possession and ability to be a meaningful factor in Girona's build-up play stood out. This attribute will set Reis up for life at Manchester City. Also, Vitor Reis can break the lines with his passing and his decision-making is exceptional for a centre-back. Both are traits that should serve him extremely well playing in the Premier League.
Given that Girona played a high defensive line under Michel, this allowed Vitor Reis to show the traits that should serve him well at Manchester City. Vitor Reis anticipates the play very well, which allows him to pick out danger from opponents at an impressive rate. There is also an intelligence to how Vitor Reis defends. He uses his ability to read the play rather than lunging into challenges. This is another set of skills that should translate into an Enzo Maresca side.

Why did Morgan Rogers choose Chelsea over ***** nal? How Xabi Alonso phone call helped broker record transfer originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Chelsea completed a considerable transfer coup by signing Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a £117m transfer fee on Tuesday.
Rogers was one of the outstanding players in the Premier League last season, scoring 10 goals and supplying six ***** ists from an attacking midfield role.
The 23-year-old, who went on to represent England at the 2026 World Cup, was also integral to Villa's Europa League triumph, scoring his third goal of the competition in the 3-0 final victory against Freiburg.
That success would have punched Villa's Champions League ticket, had they not secured a second top-four finish in the past three seasons in any case. It's a tale of success in stark contrast to Chelsea's shambolic 2025/26, where they dismissed head coaches Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior, lost the FA Cup final and finished 10th in the Premier League.

Ayyoub Bouaddi’s decision on his future is in the offing as Manchester City “push hard” to secure the Lille midfielder’s signature, as per new reports.
The Moroccan has been a sensation during the 2026 FIFA World Cup and played a starring role in his nation’s impressive run to the quarter-final stage, which saw them bow out at the hands of favourites France.
His performances have garnered attention from clubs across Europe during this summer’s window, with City’s director of football Hugo Viana a huge admirer of the 18-year-old, who has already appeared 63 times for LOSC Lille in France’s top-tier.
Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi poised for major position change at Manchester City
Manchester City‘s interest in Bouaddi comes as we await formalities to be completed on Elliot Anderson‘s £116 million move from Nottingham Forest after he returns from World Cup action with semi-finalists England – and with murmurs of moves for Nico Gonzalez and Tijjani Reijnders, a new look midfield may be favourable for new City boss Enzo Maresca.

In just over a month, Enzo Maresca will take charge of his first official match as the manager of Manchester City. City take on ******* nal in the FA Community Shield at the Principality Stadium on Sunday, August 16, following their preseason tour of Asia. Ahead of that match and the beginning of his first preseason as Manchester City's manager, Enzo Maresca now has his coaching staff all in place. All of the pieces needed for Maresca to begin a new era at City are now in place.
Last week, Manchester City confirmed the coaches that will join the club as members of Enzo Maresca's backroom staff. Roberto Vitiello, Willy Caballero, Danny Walker, Michele De Bernardin, Marcos Alvarez, Denis Silva and Javier Molina have all joined the club. The only two coaches remaining from Pep Guardiola's staff will be set-piece coach James French and goalkeeping coach Richard Wright. Each member of Enzo Maresca's coaching staff has worked with him previously, which will help Maresca begin his tenure as Manchester City manager with staff that he knows well.
With his coaching staff in place, Enzo Maresca now has all of the tools he needs in place to begin his time as Manchester City manager. Maresca will be surrounded by coaches that he has worked with previously. This should aid Maresca in quickly getting his philosophy across to the City squad, which will hopefully accelerate the bedding in process that Maresca will face with his new team.
With Enzo Maresca bringing in an entirely new group of coaches, there is a fresh feel to Manchester City. They are embarking on a new era, one without Pep Guardiola at the helm. Maresca will only have two of Pep Guardiola's staff at the club, which does allow him clean air in which to work. This can only be a positive for Enzo Maresca. While Pep Guardiola's presence will forever loom over City, Maresca will have a team in place to help him get his ideas across.

Tottenham Hotspur are monitoring a potentially significant market opening as Omar Marmoush prepares for what could be decisive talks over his Manchester City future. According to TeamTalk, the £60m forward is attracting attention from Spurs, Newcastle and clubs in Germany, with clarity from City expected to determine the next step.
Marmoush arrived from Eintracht Frankfurt in January 2025 for a fee worth close to £60 million and, for a period, looked capable of carving out an important role. That early promise faded across the second half of the campaign. The 27-year-old started only eight Premier League games last season, and his reduced involvement has placed him firmly in the conversation as the window develops.
Photo IMAGO
The key detail is straightforward. TEAMtalk reports that “Marmoush and his representatives want clarity from new Man City head coach Enzo Maresca before making any decision over his future.” That will be central to everything that follows. Sources cited in the report add that “The upcoming discussions are expected to be decisive.”
There is no indication of a player forcing an exit at this stage. In fact, the current stance is measured. “If Maresca signals Marmoush will have a prominent role, the Egyptian is open to staying and fighting for his place.” Equally, the alternative has been mapped out clearly: “However, should it become apparent that regular opportunities will again be difficult to come by, his camp are prepared to explore the growing interest from England and abroad.”
