Two weeks ago, I argued in a column that USC baseball needed to pay up and retain star pitcher Grant Govel for the 2027 season. Well, it appears as though the Trojans listened to me.
On Monday, Govel announced that he will forego signing with the Pittsburgh Pirates, who selected him in the 16th round of the MLB Draft. Instead, he will be returning to USC for his junior season in 2027.
This is a massive boost for the Trojans. Govel finished the 2026 campaign with a 10-3 record and a 2.87 ERA. For his performance, he earned second-team All-American honors.
With first-team All-American Mason Edwards signing with the Athletics as a second round draft pick, Govel should take over as USC's ace next season. In Govel and NCAA Tournament hero Andrew Johnson, Trojans hope that they will once again have one of the top pitching duos in the country in 2027.

Typically, when an extraordinarily tall player comes along, his main value is simply his height. Take Tacko Fall, for instance.
When he was at UCF, Fall, at 7-6 and around 300 lbs, was a huge pain in the paint. Duke learned about this in the 2019 NCAA tournament, when Central Florida nearly knocked the Blue Devils out.
Victor Wembanyama changed this expectation a bit. At 7-4, maybe 7-5, Wembanyama is a brilliant shot blocker, but also an excellent ball handler for his height, and he shoots very well from behind the line as well.
He's the new standard for very, very tall guys who have game.
Now, there's another kid on the horizon from Australia. His name is Jongkuch Mach. He's 18 and 7-6. He's being compared to Wemby, but he's not there yet.

Mark Elliott, who guided Trevecca from NAIA to NCAA Division II membership and became the school's longest-serving athletic director, announced his retirement on July 28 following the conclusion of the 2026-27 academic year.
Elliott, a former Vanderbilt basketball and baseball player, led Trevecca through two conference transitions since being hired in 2011. It was Elliott's first time serving as an athletic director, and he was hired one day after Trevecca announced the NCAA had accepted its application for Division II membership.
"Never having been an athletic director before, I don't think I knew what I didn't know; I just knew this was what I felt called to do, I wanted to do, I felt really good about entering into that **** e," Elliott said. "Then the main goal was to move Trevecca from NAIA to NCAA Division II. That was a four-year process back then, so I don't know that I had a longer-term vision than the four years. Lets just get to the Division II level and go from there."

Former women's basketball coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton says she has reached a settlement with the University of Virginia after her sudden firing on April 5, a week after leading the Cavaliers to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2000.
Details of the settlement were not made public. Agugua-Hamilton shared a statement about it on her Instagram account after the ****** ociated Press published a story about the settlement.
Agugua-Hamilton and her representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A spokesperson for Virginia declined to comment.
USA TODAY Sports previously reported that Agugua-Hamilton — widely known in and outside the program as "Coach Mox" — had been the subject of an internal investigation and there were allegations of staff mistreatment within the program, according to four people with knowledge of the situation.
According to a copy of Agugua-Hamilton's contract obtained by USA TODAY Sports, Virginia owed her a sizable buyout if she was terminated without cause. The contract stipulates that Virginia would have to pay her the remaining amount of her base salary, 80% of supplemental compensation, 80% of royalties and any bonuses earned, but not yet received. According to the figures outlined in her contract — which ran through the 2027-28 season — Agugua-Hamilton would have been owed about $1.3 million.

Nebraska baseball earned a spot in the 2027 Battle at the Ballpark next season. The Huskers are one of four teams to play, including Air Force, Army West Point and Notre Dame.
The three-day tournament will be hosted by the San Antonio Missions, the San Diego Padres' Double-A affiliate at Nelson W. Wolff Municipal Stadium on Feb. 26-28, 2027. The tournament will have two games per day, with each team playing each other in a round-robin format.
Nebraska finished last season 43-17, leading to it hosting an NCAA Regional. The Huskers are the only team in the Battle at the Ballpark lineup that reached the NCAA tournament. Notre Dame earned a 31-22 record last season but missed the NCAA tournament after falling in the second round of the ACC tournament. Army finished 28-20 and fell in the Patriot League Baseball Championships. Air Force finished 27-28 and finished 2-2 in the Mountain West tournament.

As Casey pointed out when I chatted with him on Thursday, it seems likely that Matt Painter did his due diligence on this before making the offer. Now, all we can do is wait.

Jamichael Stillwell is a proven performer in the Big 12 Conference, and the former Central Florida forward committed to the Texas Tech men's basketball team on Friday, July 24.
It remains to be seen whether the 6-foot-8, 245-pound forward will ever play for the Red Raiders. He'll need a court injunction to do so. Stillwell is among 16 men's basketball players suing the NCAA for an extra year of eligibility in a complaint filed July 9 in Cobb County, Georgia, according to the Daytona News-Journal.
Stillwell has played four seasons of college basketball in four years. That lumps him in among the many players who are considered out of eligibility under the NCAA's newly approved age-based eligibility model, commonly known as the 5-for-5 rule. The NCAA has said it is not granting a fifth year under the new model to athletes who completed their fourth year of competition during the 2025-26 school year.

One of the most anticipated nonconference matchups of the upcoming NCAA basketball season between Duke and reigning national champion Michigan has been called off because of broadcast rights issues.
Duke will instead face Texas Tech on Dec. 21 at Madison Square Garden, multiple media outlets, including ESPN, reported on Friday.
Michigan and Duke met for the first time in more than a decade this past regular season, with the Blue Devils coming out on top 68-63 in the Feb. 21 matchup held at the home of the Washington Wizards.
The rematch was slated for Dec. 21 and was supposed to be streamed on Amazon Prime as part of Duke's three-game deal. The game was initially set for Madison Square Garden and then moved to Loan Depot Park in Miami before its eventual cancellation.
The game has now returned to the iconic New York City venue and will instead feature Duke against Texas Tech — one of the two teams to beat the Blue Devils in the 2025-26 regular season.

Last month, USC baseball lost pitching coach Sean Allen, who was named the new head coach at Lamar. To replace him, the Trojans hired Hawaii’s Keith Zuniga. However, it appears as though that will not be the only **** istant coaching change that Andy Stankiewicz and USC make this offseason.
On Wednesday, it was reported that hitting coach and recruiting coordinator Travis Jewett will be leaving the Trojans for Vanderbilt, where he will take over as the de facto general manager. However, it took less than a day for USC to find his replacement, as Wednesday night, reports surfaced that the Trojans will be hiring veteran **** istant and longtime friend of Stankiewicz Bill Mosiello as their new hitting coach.
“Mosiello comes to USC after being an **** istant at several big-name programs in his career, including Cal State Fullerton, Arizona State, and four different schools now in the SEC,” Shotgun Spratling of 247Sports wrote. “But he is most well known as being a top **** istant at TCU for 11 of the last 13 years where he helped push the program to new heights. The Horned Frogs went to four consecutive College World Series appearances from 2014 to 2017 with Mosiello as the hitting coach.
“He had been the **** ociate head coach under Kirk Saarloos the last two seasons after a two-year stint as Ohio State's head coach. He went 60-51 with the Buckeyes and took them to their first Big Ten Tournament in a half decade in 2024, but left the position to return to Fort Worth. The Horned Frogs saw dividends right away as the team average improved 25 points in 2025, and TCU returned to the NCAA tournament (only to be beaten by USC) after not making it in 2024.
“But after TCU struggled to meet expectations this season, missing the postseason for just the second time in Mosiello's 11 years with the program, the Horned Frogs made multiple changes to their **** istant coaching staff, including parting ways with Mosiello. That opened the door for Mosiello and Stankiewicz to finally unite after more than 50 years of friendship.”

For the past three seasons, no Southeastern Conference team has played in the College Football Playoff championship game. It is a sore subject in a league that had previously won four consecutive national ***** les from 2019 through 2022. This season, the SEC could again have a team playing for the championship, as several top teams have returning quarterbacks.
The SEC had eight quarterbacks in the top 19 of The Athletic’s recent rankings, including six who started for their teams last season in No. 1 Trinidad Chambliss (Ole Miss), No. 7 Arch Manning (Texas), No. 11 Gunner Stockton (Georgia), No. 13 Marcel Reed (Texas A&M), No. 16 John Mateer (Oklahoma) and No. 18 LaNorris Sellers (South Carolina). The other two highly-ranked SEC quarterbacks are transfers in No. 8 Sam Leavitt (LSU) and No. 19 Byrum Brown (Auburn).
Chambliss is coming off the best season of any SEC quarterback, as he led the Rebels to the CFP semifinals. Although Chambliss wasn’t supposed to start and came from Division II Ferris State, he took over the starting job in September and threw for 3,937 yards and 22 touchdowns and ran for 527 yards and eight touchdowns. In three CFP games, he completed 67.9% of his passes for 921 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.
In February, a Mississippi judge ruled in Chambliss’s favor, granting him a preliminary injunction in a case against the NCAA and giving him another year of eligibility. After finishing eighth in the Heisman Trophy voting last year, he should contend for the award this year. He will be among the most hyped players this season, especially when Ole Miss on Sept. 19 hosts LSU, whose coach, Lane Kiffin, coached at Ole Miss for six seasons before leaving last November before the CFP began.

Rutgers Athletics recently unveiled its annual awards to honor the athletes who have distinguished themselves in a variety of areas. The awards included the Big Ten Medal of Honor, Bauer Athlete of the Year, the Freshman of the Year Award, the Sophomore of the Year Award, the Junior of the Year Award, the Senior of the Year Award, the Coursen Award, the Headley-Singer Award, the Werblin Award, and the Athletic Director's Excellence Award. Most of the awards were given out to one male and one female athlete.
The Big Ten Medal of Honor is awarded to one male and one female student-athlete from the graduating class of each member institution who has demonstrated excellence on and off the field.
In his senior season, Kaliakmanis threw for 3,124 passing yards and 20 touchdowns while running for four more touchdowns. His passing yards total last year is the fourth most in a season in program history, and his 260.3 average passing yards per game last year was second in the Big Ten. He was selected in the seventh round of the NFL draft by the Washington Commanders.
Crawford made breaking school records look normal during her time in Piscataway. She is now the school record holder in both the 400m indoor and outdoor. She also ran a leg on the school record sprint medley relay team, setting the top mark in 2024 at 3:47.28. Crawford recorded seven podium finishes over her career and was a two-time NCAA East First Round qualifier who earned a spot at the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Championships. She was also an All-American honorable mention.
The Bauer athlete of the year award is given to the one male and one female student-athlete from any class who has consistently performed and excelled in athletic competition at a high level for the most recent academic year.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune told reporters Thursday the Protect College Sports Act is not likely to reach the floor for a vote before the session ends in two weeks.
The bipartisan bill introduced in May by Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) addresses a wide-range of issues in college sports, from eligibility and transfer rules to regulations for compensating players.
The bill, which advanced out of committee last month, has drawn support from the NCAA and many Division I conferences, but not the Big Ten and SEC, the wealthiest and most powerful leagues. Advancing through committee markup is the furthest a college sports bill has made it in Congress; a House bill called the SCORE Act advanced through committee last year but never got to the floor for a vote.
Big Ten and SEC officials have been working with Cruz, Cantwell and other co-sponsors in recent weeks to modify the bill. The two conferences have a variety of issues with the bill, including spending limits it would impose on player compensation and restrictions on conference expansion.
Lawmakers have said there has been some progress on those negotiations, but the bigger issue appears to be the legislative calendar. The senate has only two weeks left in the session before going on summer recess starting Aug. 8.

The NCAA Division I Board of Directors doubled down Thursday on the new age-based eligibility rule that has prompted some athletes to go to court in hopes of extending their college careers.
The Division I Cabinet, which approved the new rule last month, issued a similar statement last month after a group of basketball players filed a lawsuit in an Ohio state court contending the age-based model unfairly shuts them out of further competition. More lawsuits have been filed across the country since, some of them reportedly with their coaches' encouragement.
The board statement indicates it won't budge from its stance like it did when, in response to former Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia's 2024 court win, it granted an additional year to athletes who had competed at non-NCAA schools for at least one season and were set to complete their eligibility.
"We are encouraged by the Division I membership's broad support of the age-based eligibility rules," the board said Thursday. "The design of the new rules, including its implementation strategy, was thoughtful and well informed, and was unanimously supported by the Cabinet, including its student-athlete members.
"The Board has no plans to modify their application, notwithstanding a series of lawsuits recently filed on behalf of student-athletes with no remaining eligibility. We look forward to ensuring that the age-based eligibility rules are enforced consistently so that all institutions play by the same rules, like all participants in sports."

A month after the whirlwind series of events that led to Dusty May becoming the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks, new Michigan head coach Mike Boynton Jr. is speaking on how things went down.
In an interview with the Field of 68 on Thursday, Boynton said that he knew that May was considering leaving following the Wolverines' victory in the NCAA championship, but that the two of them didn't have a conversation about next steps until the day before May took the job. May's hire was officially announced by Dallas on Tuesday, June 23.
Boynton said that they'd had an inkling that there would be a leadership change at Michigan, as May's "name came up for pretty much every job, all spring, at every level," Boynton said. That included then-open positions at North Carolina, the Chicago Bulls and the Orlando Magic, which were all subsequently filled.
Boynton, who spent seven seasons as the head coach at Oklahoma State, added that he was "sensitive" about trying to pry into what was going on with May.
"I really didn't know, and I really wasn't all that interested in finding out, because I didn't want him to feel like I was just another guy trying to seek information," Boynton said.

Auburn forward Keyshawn Hall signed an Exhibit 10 deal with the Miami Heat shortly after the conclusion of the 2026 NBA Draft and would go on to play in five games with the Heat as part of the NBA Summer League earlier this month.
Usually, playing in the NBA Summer League is a clear sign that a player has exhausted his collegiate eligibility and has shifted focus to a professional career. However, that may not be the case for Hall.
Joe Tipton of On3 reported Thursday that Hall has been granted a fifth season of eligibility through a preliminary injunction, and will explore the possibility of signing with another program for his final season of eligibility.
The ruling most likely stems from the new NCAA eligibility ruling, otherwise known as the "5-for-5" ruling that allows athletes to play their respective sport for five seasons beginning when the athlete enrolls with a university as a full-time student, or the start of the academic year following the athlete's 19th birthday, whichever comes first. The rule allows student-athletes to compete for five seasons, virtually eliminating traditional redshirt rules and medical hardships.
If Hall signs with a program, it will mark the fifth program he has played for in five seasons. He signed with Auburn through the transfer portal last offseason after leading the Big 12 in scoring at UCF as a junior. Before his time in Orlando with the Knights, Hall started 28 games for George Mason after starting his career at UNLV.

The Gators last hosted Jacksonville on Nov. 7, 2024, earning an 81-60 victory over the Dolphins. Florida leads the all-time series 33-5 against Jacksonville.

TAMPA, Fla - This week, former Texas Longhorns offensive lineman Cole Hutson moved closer to a return to the field.
According to multiple reports, Hutson has been granted a temporary restraining order in his battle with the NCAA. The order would allow Hutson to resume football activities in preparation for the 2026 season.
Attempts Thursday by the American-Statesman to reach Hutson's attorney, David Ovard, were not successful. Ovard, though, did tell 247Sports that "the court is granting the temporary restraining order and setting the injunction for a hearing, and we are working on this date."

At the heart of this legal saga is the NCAA's eligibility model that was reworked earlier this summer. It will be the second straight year the Sun Devils have faced the Sooners in nonconference play. During the UCLA Bruins NCAA championship season, freshman forward Sienna Betts had to take a backseat. While her older sister, Lauren Betts, was championed as the team's marquee star, Sienna waited on the sidelines.
Not only did the younger Betts get off to a late start to her season, not appearing in a game with UCLA until December, she never got a huge role. As a freshman, Betts played only 14.1 minutes and scored 6.0 per game.
Being buried behind her sister, Angela Dugalic and Gabriela Jaquez, there weren't many minutes for Sienna to snag. UCLA opened up their 2026-2027 season with an exhibition match on Wednesday and it appears that Sienna Betts is ready to become a star.
Betts scored 20 points with 12 rebounds and two blocks despite facing off against the Canadian National Team. Those stats were far from empty, as she kept UCLA in the game until the fourth quarter when Team Canada began to break away.
Even with the strong performance, Betts wasn't completely satisfied with her game.

Not even a week after former Texas offensive lineman Cole Hutson filed for an age-based request for an additional season of eligibility after he was thought to have used up his four seasons at the conclusion of 2025, the NCAA has announced its decision to side with Hutson, who played in 48 games during his time at Texas, including 23 starts; throughout his era on the Forty Acres, Hutson spent time at guard and center. Prior to Hutson’s legal time filing the lawsuit requesting a temporary injunction last Friday, the former Texas starter was set to attend the Dallas Cowboys rookie minicamp after he wasn’t chosen earlier this year during the NFL Draft.

With the college football season approaching, there are still plenty of off-field storylines. The 2026-27 school year will be the second of the rev-share era and the Protect College Sports Act is still on track for the Senate floor after a markup and committee vote.
All the while, coaches have been vocal about the need for consequences if programs violate the rules. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian is among them, and he shared his ****** sment of the current landscape, particularly with regard to tampering.

Sarkisian is hopeful the NCAA will be able to have stronger rules enforcement, alluding to the Protect College Sports Act and federal ****** istance for the landscape. He knows the realities about tampering in college football, but said there needs to be repercussions if rules are broken.
“I don’t want to be worried about my fourth wide receiver getting talked to by another school’s coach in pregame warmups,” Sarkisian said on The Stampede. “‘Hey, come transfer here at the end of the season. You’re not playing there anyway.’ Those are the things, like, if you do those things, there’s got to be consequences for breaking rules. And right now, we can’t govern our own rules, and that’s the most frustrating part of where we’re at in college football society right now. We can’t enforce our own laws. We can’t enforce our own rules. There’s no consequences right now.

Washington Huskies coach Danny Sprinkle has completed his coaching staff with the hiring of 25-year NBA veteran ***** istant coach Charles Klask.
Klask, a graduate of Michigan State in 1999, began his coaching career in the NBA as a video coordinator for the Detroit Pistons in 2000-01 under then-coach Rick Carlisle. He spent the next decade as a scout with the Orlando Magic, working for Doc Rivers and Stan Van Gundy among other notable head coaches for the organization before he advanced into a coaching role.
Most recently, Klask spent eight seasons with the Denver Nuggets as an ***** istant coach, helping develop players like three-time MVP big man Nikola Jokić, while being on staff for the franchise's first championship in 2023.
The hiring of Klask is the second confirmed coaching change this offseason for Sprinkle. It follows the addition of ex-Marquette ***** istant coach DeAndre Haynes, giving Sprinkle a wealth of experience joining his bench for the 2026-27 men's basketball season as the third-year coach aims to return UW to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019 under former coach Mike Hopkins.
Having coached numerous All-Star-caliber players in the NBA over his two-plus decades spent in the league—Blake Griffin, Chauncey Billups, and Andre Drummond, among several others—the addition of the Big Ten alum should blend well with a veteran-laden roster that features seven juniors and seniors.

Of the many shocking moments in Michigan State athletics this decade, perhaps the most surprising was the decision of MSU basketball star Tre Holloman to leave Michigan State by way of the transfer portal for NC State. Holloman was a beloved Spartan, and MSU fans were in uproar over the decision in what became an extremely divisive moment in MSU basketball history.
Now, Tre Holloman is back in Lansing, where he lives and raises his daughter, and was in attendance at this week's Moneyball Pro-Am. Naturally, Holloman was asked about the decision to leave, along with a potential return if the NCAA allows players like him and Jaxon Kohler to have one more year of eligibility.
Holloman laughed and said 'no comment' when asked if he regretted his decision to leave, and said that if there was a good plan for him at MSU, he would love to come back for one more season if he had the chance. You can watch the full clip below:
