Buying a stock in the hopes of holding it for 20 years or longer can be a difficult task. Warren Buffett likes to say his favorite holding period is "forever," but his trading history shows he has sold holdings, even after owning them for decades.
Knowing that, investors should look for holdings with the potential to survive and thrive for decades. Fortunately, investors have plenty of options, and these three well-established consumer staples stocks should stand out.
Missed AI's "Act 1"? Act 2 Could Be 14x Bigger. Most investors think they missed the AI boat because they didn't buy Nvidia in 2005. But according to our ****** ysts, we're only at the end of "Act 1"—the R&D phase. "Act 2" is the global rollout. Continue »
The public knows PepsiCo (NASDAQ: PEP) best for its flagship cola. Nonetheless, the company owns numerous well-known beverage and food brands, including Gatorade, Mountain Dew, Tostitos, and Quaker.
Its stock had suffered in recent years as the public turned against unhealthy beverages and packaged foods. PepsiCo has since pivoted, emphasizing healthier ingredients in its products and buying brands such as Siete to bolster this reputation.

Brian May is best known as Queen's legendary guitarist, but nature conservation is another important part of his life. May, who also earned his PhD in astrophysics and has helped NASA, loves this planet and all its wildlife.
In 2013, May announced that he had purchased 157 acres of land that was due to be developed into housing in Bere Regis, Dorset, England. He intended to transform it into a nature reserve where native British trees and wildlife could thrive.
During a July 2012 interview, May told The Sunday Times, "Queen is a huge part of my life, but I do have other interests. People know about the astrophysics, but I love gardening, too, and I've always been passionate about the welfare of our wonderful British wildlife."
Since then, the former farmland has been cultivated into a woodland wildlife sanctuary and animal rescue.
May worked with local residents and wildlife officials to make the plans for the nature reserve. In a February 2013 BBC interview, May shared his plans for the freshly purchased former farmland.

Arnold Schwarzenegger, 79, was well known for his unwavering discipline with his workout routine in his bodybuilding era, but he is just as strict with his house rules.
The Terminator actor thrives on routine and order, admitting at the Town & Country Philanthropy Summit in 2023 his motto: "The key thing is in the morning, do right away something."
That's precisely why you won't catch him leaving the bed unmade. As well as ensuring he arranges the duvet perfectly, he expects the same from his children, and growing up, there were big consequences for anyone who left their bedsheets a mess.
The actor shares four children with his ex-wife, Maria Shriver: Katherine, 36, Christina, 35, Patrick, 33, and Christopher, 29. But in 2011, the actor announced he had fathered another child, Joseph Baena, 28, who is now a bodybuilder himself, with his longtime housekeeper, Mildred Baena.
When promoting his book, Be Useful: Seven Tools for Life, Arnold told People magazine how he would throw the mattress if beds were left unmade in his house.

Taxes paid by pubs, hotels and cinemas in Wales will fall after the Welsh government announced a 30% cut in some business rates.
First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth said hospitality, accommodation and leisure venues would receive the permanent cut in rates from April 2027.
"It is about helping businesses like this to thrive, so our communities can thrive," ap Iorwerth said on a visit to a pub in Cardiff.
The cut, which will be funded by an increase in the rates paid by businesses with the highest-value properties, was welcomed by UK Hospitality Cymru. But the trade body warned businesses still faced "massive amounts of taxation coming from all areas".

Vitor Matos believes 39-year-old Jamie Vardy is still capable of making a mark in the Championship as the former England striker eyes a Burnley debut at Swansea City.
Vardy is set to be named in the Clarets squad to visit the Swansea.com Stadium, having joined Burnley this week after departing Italian club Cremonese.
And Swansea head coach Matos believes the former Leicester City frontman, who scored 200 goals in 500 Foxes appearances, still has the tools to thrive in the second tier.
"He is someone who understands how to score goals," said Matos, who is 14 months younger than Vardy.
"He moves really well - he always did that. He has a lot of talent - his finishing skills are there.

The Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings are preparing to kick off the 2026 regular season on Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
Both teams ended up with nine wins in 2025 but took very different ways of getting there. The Packers were, at one point, 9-3-1. The Vikings were, at one point, 4-8. Green Bay ended up losing five straight, including a playoff loss in Chicago, while Minnesota won five straight to end the season. Will any of that matter for Sunday? Momentum, or lack thereof, is difficult to carry over from one year to the next.
In a competitive, talented NFC North, every division matchup is a big one, and both the Packers and Vikings will want to open the season with a confidence-boosting win over a rival given how last year ended.
Five things to watch and a prediction for Week 1:
The Packers have new starters at left tackle (Jordan Morgan), center (Sean Rhyan) and right guard (Jacob Monk), and Morgan, left guard Aaron Banks and right tackle Zach Bako-Bewele are all either fighting through or returning from knee injuries. The first challenge for the 2026 offensive line? Brian Flores, a blitz-happy coordinator who thrives on creating havoc and uncertainty up front. The Packers offensive line got little to no time together during training camp, robbing the unit of cohesion entering the season. Can this group handle all the blitzes and stunts coming on Sunday? Communication and having confidence in the blocker next to you is so important to handling blitzes and movement, so the Packers front will likely be stressed early and often. Keeping Jordan Love protected, especially during the game's biggest situations (think: third down), will likely decide the winner of the opener.

Red Sox OF Ceddanne Rafaela predicted to win MLB award despite IL news originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox have bounced back from a bad start and look likely to make the MLB postseason. With a strong pitching staff in the rotation and bullpen, plus a resurgent offense, this team can go very far.
But it's not just those phases of the game where the Red Sox have thrived. Boston has also gotten plenty of great value from their defense. More specifically, from a few select defenders, one of which being center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela.
Unfortunately, he recently hit the injured list for the Red Sox and will miss some time. However, that shouldn't stop him from winning an MLB award. As MLB.com's Jared Greenspan, Brian Murphy, and Jason Foster predict, Rafaela should be the AL's Gold Glove-winning center fielder.
"When healthy, there's no one better at that spot in the junior circuit. Rafaela, a first-time Gold Glove Award winner last season, has made the most five-star catches of any player in the Majors (nine)," the MLB.com trio write.

LAWRENCE — As Kansas football embarked this past Friday on the second year of D.K. McDonald serving as the team's lead defensive coordinator, in a season opener at home against LIU, the Jayhawks saw the group thrive in Lawrence.
Kansas, which went on to win 51-6, didn't allow any points until the fourth quarter — a pair of field goals. LIU only amassed 146 yards of total offense and went 2-for-13 on third downs. KU finished with 11 tackles for loss and three sacks, only allowing LIU to average 2.8 yards per play.
RELATED: Will Kansas football have Cam Pickett and Bam Crouch available against Missouri?
On Monday, here's what McDonald had to say about the defense's performance, as the Jayhawks continued to prepare for a game this upcoming Friday at home against Missouri:
McDonald liked what his side of the ball was able to do, getting those tackles for loss. He liked the effort the guys put in, how they'd rally around each other for tackles and play to the standard they're trying to set. It's something that he wants to see continue when Kansas faces Missouri.

Bournemouth forward Daniel Jebbison says he is "ready" to make an impact whenever he is given the nod by Marco Rose this season.
Jebbison has completed two loan spells at Championship outfits Watford and Preston North End in recent seasons and is hopeful those experiences will now help him "establish" himself with the Cherries.
"I'm ready and I'm patient," Jebbison said. "I'll get my chance and every minute I get, every second or whatever, I'll work my hardest so that's what I'm trying to do, just take it day-by-day.
"I sometimes forget I'm only 23, and I just feel in my body that I can help the team this season. I've had my experience now and I'm here and ready to try and establish myself here.
"I just need to be good at what I do. Obviously there's competition, I love competition, it's OK and that will only help me thrive and hopefully it thrives the other boys too."

The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX:^GSPC) has risen by 13% thus far in 2026. The broad index is on track for another above-average performance; historically, its annual gains are around just 10%. However, with many stocks continuing to perform well, the index, which tracks the leading companies on U.S. markets, has thrived.
Gold, meanwhile, which investors typically turn to when they're worried about the stock market, has been going in the opposite direction. Its value has been diminishing, a sharp turnaround from earlier in the year, when gold was hitting record levels. The SPDR Gold Shares(NYSEMKT:GLD) fund, which tracks gold, is up only 3% this year.

However, with no shortage of economic and political uncertainty ahead, will this pattern continue? Is tracking the S&P 500 still the ideal move for investors, or is it time to buy SPDR Gold Shares?

The early non-conference season continues to bring a mixed bag for Northwestern (2-3). At one moment, it seems to thrive and have its way, and at others, it seems lost.
That's exactly what the 'Cats trip to Starkville looked like last week, handing Alabama (3-1) its first loss of the season before being dispatched by Mississippi State (4-1). These contests showed both sides of the coin when it comes to Wildcat volleyball.
Let's not waste time. Here are your three major takeaways from the weekend.
It's Lauren Dignan's time. She donned the libero jersey in both contests this week. That's not to say Drew Wright or Gigi Navarette will be tossed aside, but its clear that Tim Nollan believes in who he's recruited as the future of that position. 2025 was her year to learn the machine, 2026 is her year to take the wheel.
The Mara Štiglic-Bella Bullington partnership is starting to settle into place. Štiglic led the team with 36 kills while Bullington followed with 26. The rapid growth of success for these two feels of utmost importance, Bullington basically undertaking Rylen Reid's role in the system from a year ago and Štiglic learning the system in its entirety.

49ers get warning about their Super Bowl window originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The San Francisco 49ers are a legacy team and the kind of team that always expects to go all the way. But, even for teams that are historically successful, there are often years where they're just better suited to win than others.
This coming season is one of those years for the 49ers. They're positioned well in 2026 to thrive, but after that, their chances drop off quite a bit. The reason has a lot to do with the age of this team's players.
Quarterback Brock Purdy is 26 years old, but this team's projected starting offense averages 30.3 years old, the oldest in the NFL.
On Sunday, Aaron Schatz at ESPN unleashed a feature naming a handful of NFL teams who will have their best shot to win a Super Bowl this year and then a more difficult shot in 2027.

Cathy Engelbert is stepping down as WNBA commissioner, ending a polarizing tenure that saw the league grow exponentially under her watch but also raised questions about her ability to lead it through its era of increased scrutiny and attention.
Engelbert has informed the league of her decision to retire, effective at the end of this year, it was announced today by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.
"Cathy has presided over the WNBA through the most significant period of growth in the league's 30-year history," said Silver. "We are grateful for Cathy's leadership and unwavering commitment to the advancement of women's basketball."
Engelbert, 61, has served as WNBA commissioner since May 2019. Previously, she worked at Deloitte for more than 30 years and was elevated to CEO of the company in 2015.
"After more than seven years at the WNBA and more than 40 total years in business, I have made the decision to retire as WNBA Commissioner," said Engelbert. "In 2019, I had the privilege of being appointed the league's first commissioner and to lead a league with enormous potential yet untapped awareness and significant undervaluation. Over the years, it has been amazing to watch WNBA players thrive and lead the massive cultural surge around women's sports."

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Throughout Jared Young's nine-year journey in pro ball, a winding path featuring a stop in Korea and more than 2,500 at-bats in the minor leagues, the belief that he would one day thrive in the big leagues never wavered.
To Young, it was only a matter of time. He's been waiting for an extended opportunity at this level and knew he'd be ready to take advantage whenever he got that chance.
"I always fully believed it," Young told NJ.com this week at Tropicana Field. "You just gotta keep believing in yourself and keep playing because there's a ton of good players that have opportunities and rightfully so, so when you get yours, you just gotta be ready for it."
With a runway of playing time this season in a Mets uniform, Young has capitalized in a big way. The 31-year-old is hitting .265 across 91 games with eight home runs, 16 doubles and 35 RBI. Other than Juan Soto, who is in his own category offensively, Young is tied with rookie phenom Carson Benge for the highest OPS among all active Mets (.758).
"This is where talent and character finally ran into opportunity," Mets interim manager Andy Green said recently. "Opportunity just never met him before, and it's finally there for him. We're getting to see who he is ... and he's been everything we could hope for."

Throughout his 19-year tenure leading the Pittsburgh Steelers, former head coach Mike Tomlin managed roster dynamics that required equal parts tactical precision and human understanding. Few relationships were as critical, or as heavily scrutinized, as the dynamic between Tomlin and his Hall of Fame-bound quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger.
During a recent appearance on "The Dan Patrick Show," Tomlin provided rare insight into how he successfully coached Roethlisberger's famously off-script, backyard style of play, revealing why trying to box in his star quarterback was never an option.
When asked how he handled a quarterback who occasionally preferred playing outside strict play calls, Tomlin explained that effective leadership means tailoring the system to the individual rather than forcing a rigid structure.
"More than anything, man, it's my job to make sure his talent show up and to bring the game to him," Tomlin said. "I think different players digest the game in different ways and play with different styles. Ben didn't like constraints, and so I always wanted to accommodate that when I was capable."
That flexibility allowed Roethlisberger to thrive during key moments, producing iconic, game-extending plays that defined an era of Steelers football. Rather than viewing Big Ben's freelancing as a breakdown in discipline, Tomlin recognized it as the core mechanism of his quarterback's genius.

Just 105 days separate the Aston Villa triumph in the Europa League final and the end of the transfer window in England. In that short ******* e of time, the villans have gone from euphoria to uncertainty in the blink of an eye.
That's because the squad led by Unai Emery has been through a genuine revolution: the backbone of the side that had been fighting for top spots in the Premier League in recent years has been almost completely dismantled. The fact is that the Birmingham club has been affected by UEFA's financial rules, so selling players was nothing new.
In 2024, Douglas Luiz's move to Juventus prevented a 10-point deduction for breaching financial fair play; later, Moussa Diaby headed to Saudi Arabia because of PSR/SCR rules, which limit clubs in European competitions to spending only 70 per cent of their operating revenue.
Then 2025 began with the record sale of Jhon Durán to Al-Nassr. Mid-year, it was Jacob Ramsey's turn to join Newcastle – it is worth noting that academy graduates tend to generate more profit, something that leaves fans deeply frustrated when they want to see local players thrive.
Now, in 2026, Aston Villa were still forced to 'sell to buy' and saw nine players leave permanently, in a process that generated £313.5 million - staggering figures that represent the second-highest revenue ever produced by a club in a single transfer window.

Real Madrid have made an encouraging start under Jose Mourinho, but there are already two squad-management questions that could test the Portuguese coach as the season develops.
Los Blancos have won three on the bounce to kick-start their La Liga campaign, and their latest 4-0 victory against Malaga offered a lot of promise.
The Portuguese tactician has set his team up to play some exciting, counter-attacking football, and the forward line in particular has thrived.
Now, according to Alvaro Romero of El Larguero, there are two early concerns emerging for Mourinho's reign.
One concerns the size of Mourinho's squad, while the other centres on Aurelien Tchouameni and where the midfielder fits following Federico Valverde's impressive start to the campaign.

Lions get bold Jameson Williams, Amon-Ra St. Brown prediction that'd be a huge surprise originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Detroit Lions are entering the 2026 NFL season with a new offensive coordinator leading the way. Drew Petzing, who's been with the Arizona Cardinals for a while before this Lions gig, is now calling the shots on offense.
But even with change, Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Sam LaPorta should still be able to thrive. That's exactly what ESPN's Dan Graziano is predicting will happen in 2026. But in a way that would be a bit of a surprise.
Instead of St. Brown leading the offense like normal, he's predicting that Williams will wind up as the Lions' leading receiver this upcoming season. If this came true, it would be a huge surprise considering what the Lions' passing attack has looked like in recent years.
"Don't be surprised if ... Jameson Williams is the team's leading receiver," Graziano writes. "No disrespect to Amon-Ra St. Brown, one of the most consistent pass catchers in the entire league. But I think this Lions offense is going to hum this season, and Williams is the player poised to take the biggest leap."

Premier League clubs shattered their record of £3.1 billion ($4.2 billion) in transfer fees in one window on deadline day as Manchester City closed in on a £125 million deal for Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez and signed Iliman Ndiaye.
City spearheaded a frantic final day of spending as they aim to arm Enzo Maresca with a squad capable of winning the Premier League for the first time in three seasons.
Fernandez, who previously thrived under Maresca at Chelsea, has been linked with a move to the Etihad for months.
But it took until the final hours before the 2200 GMT deadline for an agreement to be reportedly struck with the fee for the Argentine set to match the British transfer record that Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak on the final day of the window last year.
Fernandez will form a completely revamped City midfield alongside England international Elliot Anderson and Moroccan Ayyoub Bouaddi, who themselves cost over a combined £200 million.

Before purchasing the Los Angeles Lakers with Bob Iger, Josh Kushner and his company — Thrive — were at the center of another major purchase. Kushner was expected to be one of the main characters at the center of Gianni Infantino's plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors.
That plan turned out to be a disaster. Opposition from member **** ociations, strongly-worded statements and boycotts turned the soccer world against Infantino, who continues to face criticism and calls for his job today.
FIFA eventually announced that plan was scrapped and Kushner purchased the Lakers a few weeks later.
Until Monday, Kushner had not commented on his involvement with the FIFA proposal. He finally broke his silence, telling Axios he would not have gotten involved at all had he known how much member **** ociations would oppose the deal.
"Money in football has historically been concentrated amongst a small group of countries. The idea behind FFE was to direct more capital and equity equally amongst all 211 member countries, providing significantly more investment to underdeveloped nations to nurture local talent, support grassroots football, enhance the fan experience, and ultimately grow the global game everywhere.

Joshua Kushner – the brother of Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner – has expressed regret at becoming involved in the controversial plans of Fifa president Gianni Infantino to sell off stakes in the World Cup to private investment.
Kushner is the founder and chief executive of venture capital firm Thrive Capital, and had held talks with Infantino about heading up a $4.2bn (£3.1bn) investment in 20 per cent of a proposed new Fifa commercial subsidiary, Fifa Forward Enterprise (FFE).
However, the idea was abandoned just days after it was revealed amid a huge backlash and Uefa is now preparing to bring a criminal complaint against Infantino in Switzerland for "criminal mismanagement".

Infantino's sell-off scheme collapsed within days last month after Uefa threatened to boycott the World Cup and other Fifa competitions, although the European governing body recently called off its boycott after saying it had received "assurances" that Fifa would not attempt to sell off stakes in its competition again.

The Spaniard has put pen to paper on a long-term contract running until 2031 with Die Roten Bullen.
"Joining RB Leipzig is exactly the right step for me. The club made a real effort to bring me here and, in our talks, gave me a clear idea of the role I can play in the team," said Marc Guiu.
"RB Leipzig have shown time and again that young players can develop here at the very highest level. RBL are also an ambitious club with high aspirations in every competition. I want to play my part in achieving those goals while continuing to improve every day."
RB Leipzig managing director for sport Marcel Schäfer believes Guiu has all the qualities to thrive at the Red Bull Arena.

Know Yo' Foe: Bless You Boys
The Twins' postseason hopes aren't dead yet, but a disastrous 8-17 August has put them firmly as a long shot. They are only four games out of a playoff spot, but teams like the Guardians, Blue Jays, and Orioles are trending in the right direction while the Twins and Mariners fade out of the picture.
At this point, the Twins need to pivot to 2027 evaluation mode and if a few bonus wins come, all the better. Walker Jenkins and Kaelen Culpepper should be in the lineup nearly every day from here on out, Gabriel Gonzalez should see every possible PA against lefties, and Emmanuel Rodriguez and Alan Roden likely need to start taking playing time away from Trevor Larnach and Josh Bell when rosters expand tomorrow.
Part of the issue recent Twins teams have run into is simply not knowing whether certain young players are truly ready to take on a bigger role, and they can't afford that heading into 2027 on a team in need of upgrades in both the lineup and pitching staff.
Speaking of pitching, after 2027, Joe Ryan, Pablo Lopez, Dean Kremer, and Bailey Ober are all free agents. Connor Prielipp and Zebby Matthews have shown flashes of brilliance this season, while Mick Abel and Kendry Rojas will be back from injury with nothing left to prove in AAA, to say nothing of pitching prospects like Riley Quick, Ryan Gallagher, and Adrian Bohorquez who will likely be ready at different points next season. Jeremy Zoll and Co. will need to sort through who of that group is worth keeping, who should be traded, who could thrive in the bullpen, and who (looking at you, Ober) maybe shouldn't be tendered a contract at all.

It has been a busy day in terms of transfer talk surrounding Manchester City. At the beginning of today, it seemed that City would pursue a move to sign Cody Gakpo from Liverpool. However, that move has fallen through, which has seen City shift their focus onto other targets. Everton's versatile winger Iliman Ndiaye is now the player that Manchester City want to add more quality and depth to their attack. It is now reported that City have landed the Senegalese international.
David Ornstein has reported for The Athletic that Manchester City and Everton are close to reaching an agreement that will see Iliman Ndiaye become a City player. Ornstein reports that City and Everton are in the process of finalising a total package worth £65 million for the Senegalese winger.
Manchester City look to have found the attacker they needed to cover the loss of Omar Marmoush. Iliman Ndiaye will be the player tasked with adding a different dimension to Manchester City's attack. As a player, Ndiaye will add tremendous ability in one-on-one situations to the City attack. Ndiaye excels at taking on defenders and his strong dribbling ability is a key ***** et to his play. That is a quality that Enzo Maresca wants in his wingers. Ndiaye will bring that in spades as the statistics below illustrate.
On top of his ability to beat a man with his dribbling, Iliman Ndiaye can play on either wing or through the middle. That versatility will be a weapon that Maresca will tap into. Also, Iliman Ndiaye looks to be a player who is ready to make the jump up to a club like City. He has thrived and grown playing at Sheffield United and Everton in England. Now his big move has come and it will be fascinating to see how Ndiaye fares as a City player.
Manchester City have seemingly got the attacking player they desperately needed in Iliman Ndiaye. Everton's Senegalese international will add a different element and dimension to Manchester City's attacking play. Also, City's pivot from seemingly moving to sign Cody Gakpo from Liverpool to Iliman Ndiaye has come off. A busy day has finally reached a conclusion and the City squad will be stronger with the addition of Iliman Ndiaye.

Playing "winning football" sounds vague on the surface, and heading into Mike Elko's third season at the helm, it's clear that the program is in the right direction, but back-to-back losses to Texas and Miami in the first round of the College Football Playoff were the antithesis of what we saw throughout the 2025 season.
This starts and ends with redshirt junior quarterback Marcel Reed, who threw four of his career-high twelve interceptions in both losses while seemingly playing with less confidence compared to his past performances, resulting in poor decision-making; former OC Collin Klein's decision to use fewer RPO looks and keep Reed in the pocket also deserves some blame.
Under first-year offensive coordinator Holmon Wiggins, the expectation is that Marcel Reed will return to utilizing his dual-threat skill set more often, getting outside the pocket, especially on play action where he has thrived since becoming the full-time starter. Equipped with one of the best wide receiver rooms in the country, Reed's improvement this preseason should lead to another jump in consistent play.
However, the defense allowed nearly 400 rushing yards against Texas and Miami last season, a huge contributing factor in both losses that wasn't based on personnel, aside from a lack of size at linebacker, which has been addressed this offseason.
During Thursday's press conference, Mike Elko said taking another step toward making "winning plays" in key moments has been a clear focus, starting with finishing strong every practice, while his team's mental makeup will be tested throughout the nine-game SEC schedule.

Suryakumar Yadav has admitted that he only has himself to blame for failing to establish a longer career in ODI cricket, despite becoming one of India's most successful T20 batters.
The former India T20I captain played 37 ODIs and scored 773 runs at an average of 25.76, numbers that never quite reflected the impact he had in the shortest format. His final ODI appearance came in the 2023 World Cup final against Australia, and he has not featured in India's 50-over setup since.
Suryakumar, who led India to T20 World Cup glory earlier this year, acknowledged that his ODI career remains a source of disappointment. Rather than pointing to selection calls or circumstances, he accepted responsibility for not doing enough to adapt to the demands of the format.
"Hypothetically, we can say anything - that if I had come into the team in 2016, I could have played Tests and probably done well in ODIs too. But the reality is that I played only one Test and one innings. After that, the other players came back and started playing again, so it didn't happen. But definitely, I am disappointed with myself when it comes to ODI cricket.
"It was a white-ball format, just like T20s, but to be very honest, I personally feel I did not put in as much effort as I should have for that format," Suryakumar Yadav said on Aakash Chopra's YouTube channel.
While T20 cricket has allowed Suryakumar to thrive with his aggressive strokeplay, he believes ODI cricket demands a far more calculated approach from batters.
He described the 50-over game as the most difficult format for a batter because situations can change rapidly, particularly for those coming in at No. 4, 5 or 6.
"I feel ODI cricket is probably the most difficult format to play as a batter, whether you are batting lower down the order or anywhere else. You can be two down for zero if you are batting at No. 4, or four down for 24 if you are batting at No. 6. Anything can happen. You have to bat almost like you do in a Test match. You see off the bowlers initially, give them respect and slowly build your innings. You may bat at a strike rate of 50 or sometimes 75, then take it to 100 and eventually finish at 130 or 140, much like you do in T20 cricket," he added.
According to Suryakumar, the challenge was not simply about batting in a different format. He struggled to work out exactly how he needed to construct an innings in ODI cricket, particularly in the middle order.
Suryakumar revealed that he knew he was likely to occupy a middle-order role, but failed to put the same level of preparation into ODI cricket that he now gives T20 cricket.
"Personally, I feel I could not crack how to approach that format. I knew I was probably going to bat at No. 5 or 6, but even then, I did not work hard enough to understand the format. By the time I could blink, those 20-25 games had gone. I don't even know when it happened or how it went by. And yes, I definitely regret not playing more ODI cricket. I wonde
