Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE) and Valneva SE (NASDAQ:VALN) reported on August 14 that the European Medicines Agency has validated the Marketing Authorization Application for PF-07307405, the companies' experimental Lyme disease vaccine candidate, and will now begin the official review.
For a vaccine candidate first proposed in a 2020 collaboration deal between Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE) and French biotech Valneva SE (NASDAQ:VALN), this represents the formal transition from years of clinical development into European regulatory review.
The application is based on the Phase 3 VALOR trial, a placebo-controlled, randomized study of 9,437 participants aged five and older from high-incidence Lyme disease locations in US, Canada, and Europe. Participants got four doses on a phased schedule: one at months 0, 2, and 5-9, followed by a fourth dosage around a year later, shortly before the start of the next Lyme season. Topline data released in March 2026 demonstrated efficacy of over 70% in reducing confirmed Lyme disease cases, with the vaccine generally tolerated and no safety issues detected. However, the statistical picture was less clean than the headline efficacy suggests. The first prespecified **** ysis, which served as the primary endpoint, showed 73.2% efficacy but failed the trial's predefined statistical criterion because the lower bound of the 95% confidence interval was 15.8%, below the required 20%. A second prespecified **** ysis showed 74.8% efficacy and did meet that threshold.
Valneva SE (NASDAQ:VALN), the smallest of the two partners, views the vaccine as a clean competitive setup. According to the company, PF-07307405 is the most advanced Lyme disease vaccine candidate currently in clinical development, a rare spot in the vaccine industry where new entrants often face competition from existing treatments. Under the terms of the 2020 partnership and license agreement, Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE) will have exclusive rights to produce and commercialize the vaccine if it is approved, while Valneva SE (NASDAQ:VALN) will benefit as a development partner.
The institutional stance is very different between the two companies, reflecting their very different sizes. Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:PFE) is still a strong name in the institutional **** e, with hedge fund ownership stable at 83 funds in the second quarter of 2026, the same as the first quarter, reflecting its position as a large, diversified pharmaceutical holding, rather than a name driven by a specific pipeline event. Valneva SE (NASDAQ:VALN), however, has little hedge fund exposure, with only 4 funds holding a position in the second quarter, up from 1 in the first quarter, reflecting the continued lack of visibility of the smaller partner among institutional investors.

Deere & Co. (NYSE: DE) stock had a strong week, hitting a record high above $700 per share. Shares have jumped 10% since last Friday's close, according to data provided by S&P Global Market Intelligence.
After a strong fiscal third-quarter report on Aug. 20, Deere boosted the low end of its full-year net income guidance by $250 million. One ******* yst thinks that signals the start of a recovery cycle in agricultural equipment sales, and thinks Deere stock is still a buy near its record high.

Investors noticed when Deere CEO John May helped make the case for agriculture and construction stocks, stating, "As we look ahead, we continue to believe 2026 will mark the bottom of the current ag equipment cycle."
That would be welcome as companies like Deere & Co. navigate a dynamic tariff and tariff refund environment. Tariff rates have changed, and refunds have been distributed in some cases, making it difficult to set pricing and plan capital spending. But Deere is confident, citing its diversified product groups, advanced technology offerings, and what May called "stable U.S. market conditions."

Announcing Q2 2026 financial results on Aug. 13, The Metals Company reported earnings per share (EPS) of negative $0.14 -- a slimmer loss than the $0.20 it reported during the same period in 2025.
In the press release accompanying the Q2 2026 financial results, Gerard Barron, the company's CEO, reassured investors that The Metals Company is advancing steadily toward achieving the necessary certifications. Barron stated, "The regulatory picture is becoming clearer as our applications continue to progress through NOAA's [National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration] review process." Moreover, Barron commented that despite encountering some delays, the company remains "confident that the permit will arrive well in advance of offshore vessel commissioning by the end of 2027, which we believe remains the critical path for production start."

Broadcom (AVGO) reports fiscal Q3 2026 earnings after the close on Wednesday, Sept. 2. The numbers will almost certainly be extraordinary. The real question, and Morgan Stanley spelled it out, is whether extraordinary is enough.
That's the setup heading into Q3. Not "Can Broadcom deliver?" but whether it can clear a bar that some investors have quietly set at more than $150 billion in AI revenue for fiscal 2027. Morgan Stanley models $120 billion.
The gap between those two numbers is where near-term volatility lives. Remember, Q2 was a great reminder that very strong results are not necessarily enough when expectations are high.
The firm maintains its Overweight rating on AVGO, according to a note shared with me at TheStreet. But it's worth reading the note's headline: "The main risk into the print is expectations rather than fundamentals."

Elon Musk's Tesla (TSLA) has plenty on its plate right now. The EV giant is pouring billions into high-profile bets such as robotaxis, humanoid robots, and a massive chip fabrication plant, all in the hope of unlocking its next phase of growth. But those ambitious investments are already showing up in the numbers, weighing on profits and pushing free cash flow into negative territory. Now, a major policy shift from Washington could give Tesla's energy business an unexpected boost. On Aug. 27, President Donald Trump signed an emergency order aimed at keeping certain foreign-made transformers and other critical power equipment out of the U.S. electric grid.
The order broadly restricts the purchase, import, or installation of certain foreign-made bulk-power system equipment and related software if they could create cybersecurity or operational risks. It also opens the door to new rules that could affect equipment already installed across the U.S. That could be a big deal for the U.S. energy industry. China currently accounts for roughly 80% of the world's battery and solar inverter manufacturing capacity, according to the International Energy Agency.

Geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and China are central to the bull cases for stocks like USA Rare Earth (NASDAQ: USAR) and MP Materials (NYSE: MP). China dominates the global market for the extraction and processing of rare-earth minerals, and the company has used its position in the sector as a key lever as it navigates increasingly adversarial relations with the U.S., ***** an, and the European Union.
The U.S. and key allies have been making moves to reduce their dependence on Chinese rare-earth mineral supplies, but these initiatives are generally still in relatively early stages compared to what is needed. In June, China announced it was implementing export restrictions on the sale of goods and technologies to USA Rare Earth and MP Materials that could be used to support sourcing by foreign militaries.
Missed Nvidia in 2009? This Rare Signal Is Flashing Again. In 2009, a "Double Down" signal flashed for a little-known chipmaker called Nvidia. For the first time in years, that same "Total Conviction" signal is flashing for a company 1/100th the size of Nvidia. Continue »
Could this actually be a bullish catalyst for U.S.-based rare-earth companies?
While Chinese export restrictions could create moderate near-term headwinds for USA Rare Earth and MP Materials, both companies had already taken significant steps to diversify their supply chains away from relying on Chinese goods and services. In that regard, the export restrictions can be viewed as accelerating a shift that was already underway -- and as a development that could actually wind up being a positive long-term catalyst.

Tesla (TSLA) is a global leader in electric vehicles, energy storage, and artificial intelligence, headquartered in Austin, Texas. Led by CEO Elon Musk, Tesla designs and manufactures EVs, energy storage systems, and solar products while aggressively expanding into autonomous driving, robotics, and AI infrastructure through its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, Robotaxi network, and Optimus humanoid robot program. The company operates through two primary segments: Automotive, and Energy Generation and Storage. As Tesla transitions from a pure-play automaker into a broader AI and robotics powerhouse, it continues to invest heavily in manufacturing capacity, battery technology, and next-generation autonomous systems worldwide.
Tesla's stock has struggled in 2026, trading near the bottom of its 52-week range and below its 200-day moving average. Shares recently closed around $336.87, down sharply from a 52-week high of $498.83 set in June, though still above the 52-week low of $297.38 touched in late July. The stock has been pressured by margin compression, a negative free cash flow quarter, and investor anxiety over Tesla's massive AI and robotics capital spending, even as anticipation builds around the upcoming public Cybercab robotaxi launch in Austin and continued progress on Optimus humanoid robot production.

Car insurance prices fell 4.5% year over year in July.
State Farm has begun paying a record $5 billion auto dividend of about 4% to 10% of what customers paid in 2025.
Consumers can get dividends only from mutual and reciprocal insurers like State Farm and USAA.
Car owners had to dig deeper into their pockets as insurance rates spiked earlier this decade. Now some of that money is flowing the other way.
State Farm has begun issuing a one-time $5 billion policyholder dividend, the largest in the company's 103-year history. Millions of payments have already been delivered, and more are rolling out in waves over the next several months. The checks average $100 per vehicle across more than 49 million insured vehicles, ranging from 4% to 10% of the auto premium each customer paid in 2025.

Microsoft (MSFT) is riding high. The company reported better-than-anticipated fourth quarter results after the bell last week, winning over investors who had soured on the Windows developer's stock.
Microsoft has been hounded for much of the year over questions about when its massive AI investments would begin to pay off and whether its Copilot AI software was gaining traction among its vast customer base.
Now it looks as though that's beginning to happen, with the company saying it now has more than 30 million paid Microsoft Copilot 365 seats. Azure revenue also grew 43% last quarter, and growth is expected to continue to accelerate through the first half of Microsoft's fiscal 2027.
However, Bloomberg reported on Wednesday that the bulk of Microsoft's AI growth came from OpenAI (OPAI.PVT), adding to concerns about too much revenue concentration around a small set of AI companies.
Despite that, Microsoft's results helped boost Wall Street's confidence in the company's AI plans. While shares of Microsoft underperformed the broader S&P 500, as well as peers Google and Amazon over the last 12 months, the stock turned positive year to date following the company's earnings announcement.

First Watch reported another quarter of growth, with a 3.4% increase in same-store sales, driven largely by an expanded marketing strategy focused on improving overall brand awareness. The Bradenton, Florida-based full-service breakfast company also benefited from a 3.7% pricing increase for the quarter, as well as commodities deflation as some parts of the supply chain stabilize.
First Watch also noted a pattern of traffic improvement, particularly in June, though overall traffic was flat for the quarter. New First Watch CFO Ashley Weisser, who was promoted in June, said that the 0.4% dip in traffic was partially due to cannibalization, as the company opens more stores and customers visit new locations, but don't leave the brand.
"Benefits from our marketing investments were a significant contributor to our Q2 performance," CEO Chris Tomasso said during Tuesday's earnings call for the quarter ended June 28. "Since implementing an expanded marketing strategy early last year, brand awareness has been building, and we believe contributing to our improved same restaurant traffic trends and overall same restaurant sales growth, our marketing objectives are focused on driving at least one more visit from existing customers, while also positioning First Watch squarely in the consideration set for new customers."
Beyond marketing, the company noted the positive performance of its LTO menu, including the Chimichurri Steak and Eggs Hash, which ran from January through May and became its best-selling LTO item of all time.

July 29 (Reuters) - Biogen reported second-quarter profit and revenue that topped Wall Street estimates on Wednesday, driven by strong demand ‌for its rare-disease medicines, while sales of its legacy multiple ‌sclerosis drugs stayed under pressure.
Investors are closely watching whether recent deals and newer products including its Alzheimer's drug Leqembi can reignite growth and help the company navigate mounting competition and pricing pressure across its aging multiple sclerosis portfolio.
Despite an upbeat quarter, Biogen cut its 2026 adjusted per-share profit forecast to ‌between $12 and $13 from between $14.25 and $15.25 per share earlier, reflecting a $3.85 per share impact from acquisition-related charges.
Analysts were expecting 2026 profit of $12.72 per share, according to data compiled by LSEG.
The drugmaker said its $5.6 billion buyout of Apellis Pharmaceuticals earlier this year would account for an 85-cent-per-share hit to annual profit.

Robinhood Markets (HOOD) reports second-quarter results on Wednesday, July 29. That could be an ideal time for active traders to consider single-stock ETFs such as the Direxion Daily HOOD Bull 2X ETF (HODU).
Ahead of the report, traders considering this leveraged ETF should examine some of the catalysts that could move Robinhood shares. It should also be noted that HODU attempts to deliver 200% of the daily returns of the financial services stock. That is to say, this is a short-term ETF, not one that should be treated as a buy-and-hold fund.
Heading into Robinhood earnings, Wall Street is bullish on the financial services stock. On Monday, Needham reiterated a "buy" rating on the stock, while boosting its price target to $123 from $97. Citing strength across various business lines, including cryptocurrency, equities, options and prediction markets, Needham boosted its 2026 and 2027 revenue estimates on Robinhood. It noted that the brokerage firm's core retail customer remains heavily engaged with the platform.
In recent months, prediction markets have increasingly become a focal point in the Robinhood investment thesis. It's an issue for traders considering HODU to stay abreast of as well.

Apple (AAPL) has cleared one of the biggest obstacles to its artificial intelligence (AI) strategy. The Chinese version of Apple Intelligence will integrate Alibaba's Qwen large language model, while Baidu (BIDU) will also support certain localized AI capabilities to comply with China's strict AI regulations.
The approval could be far more significant than a routine product rollout. China remains one of Apple's most important markets, but intensifying competition from domestic smartphone makers offering advanced AI features has weighed on iPhone demand in recent years.
