Once news broke that Josh Kushner and Bob Iger had agreed to purchase a majority share of the Los Angeles Lakers from Mark Walter this week, questions arose about how they would run the franchise. Part of that speculation has to do with any immediate or quick changes that could be made.
Ramona Shelburne of ESPN said that Chris Paul is a name to watch as far as someone who could be brought into the organization. Paul recently retired, ending a legendary 21-season career in the NBA as one of the league's better point guards of all time, and he has had a close friendship with Iger that goes back a number of years.
In an article for the California Post, Khobi Price shed some light on what type of role Paul could hold with the Lakers if he were to be hired by Kushner and Iger. While it is unknown how much interest Paul has in joining the organization, one person who works in the front office of an NBA team said that the future Hall of Famer could be a consultant.
"A front office member on an Eastern Conference team told the Post they could see Paul, at least initially, best fitting in as a consultant as someone who people around the organization can pick the brain of the 12-time All-Star," Price wrote.
"'Just comes down to commitment and how much he listens,' the front office member told the Post of Paul's fit as an executive. 'Understanding [the] game at such a higher level goes such a long way.'"

The Lakers have undergone many changes over the last few seasons, but their recent blockbuster sale has shocked the entire sports world. Venture capitalist Joshua Kushner and former two-time Disney CEO Bob Iger have taken the reins.
ESPN's Ramona Shelburne offered some clarity in an article shortly after the sale.
Reports indicate that both Iger and Kushner share a deep love of basketball. Lakers reporter Dave McMenamin emphasized Iger's passion for the sport during a guest appearance on the ESPN Radio show Sedano & Kap.
While Iger was a fan from the sidelines, Joshua Kushner is a proven businessman among league circles. In 2019, He acquired a minority stake in the Memphis Grizzlies.
Kushner followed sold his Grizzlies stake in 2025 to purchase a minority stake in the Miami Heat before finally partnering with Iger for their Wednesday morning blockbuster. His last name has been famously linked to political headlines through his older brother, Jared, the husband of Ivanka Trump.

Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Bob Iger and Josh Kushner agreed to buy the Los Angeles Lakers, the American businessmen announced Wednesday.
Sources familiar with the transaction told UPI the agreement is worth $12.5 billion, which would set a record for the highest-priced sale of a North American sports franchise.
Lakers majority owner Mark Walter purchased a controlling interest in the storied NBA franchise from the Buss family in October. That purchase helped the Lakers set a record franchise valuation of $10 billion.
"As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world," Kushner and Iger said in a joint statement.
"We have immense respect for the leadership and vision of Jerry and Jeanie Buss. Our long-term commitment is to build on that foundation, compete at the highest level, and serve this extraordinary team, its fans, and the city of Los Angeles."

Billionaire Mark Walter is reportedly selling the Los Angeles Lakers to former Disney CEO Bob Iger and venture capitalist Josh Kushner for a record-breaking $12.5 billion.
"As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world. We have immense respect for the leadership and vision of Jerry and Jeanie Buss," Kushner and Iger told ESPN in a statement Wednesday. "Our long-term commitment is to build on that foundation, compete at the highest level, and serve this extraordinary team, its fans, and the city of Los Angeles."
The pair had been involved in the NBA's expansion process in Las Vegas before unexpectedly shifting their focus to the Lakers and making an aggressive offer to buy the team, sources told ESPN. The shocking sale comes just one year after Walter, the CEO and chairman of diversified holding company TWG Global, acquired a controlling stake in the Lakers from the Buss family for an estimated $10 billion valuation, setting a record at the time.
"Owning the Los Angeles Lakers has been one of the great honors of my life – an extraordinary investment, but what I will carry with me is the community, the fans, and a city that treats this team as family," Walter, who purchased the franchise just last year, said in a statement to ESPN. "I am grateful to Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, the players, and the staff for welcoming me into this chapter. The Lakers belong to Los Angeles, and I have every confidence the best is still ahead."
Walter, 66, has investments across several professional sports teams. Through TWG Global, he has interests in the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Sparks, Premier League soccer club Chelsea and the Professional Women's Hockey League. He also owns several auto racing teams through TWG Motorsports, including Cadillac's Formula 1 team.

In a stunning turn of events, billionaire Mark Walter is selling the Lakers to former Disney CEO Bob Iger and venture capital executive Josh Kushner in a deal reportedly worth $12.5 billion, less than 14 months after Walter reached an agreement to acquire the iconic NBA franchise.
The latest sale adds about $2.5 billion to the Lakers' valuation since Walter and his partners acquired them from the Buss family and sets a valuation record for a control sale of a U.S. pro sports franchise, topping Walter's own mark from last year.
Walter, however, has since come under federal investigation for alleged tax fraud involving insurance companies he controls. There are separate probes underway by U.S. prosecutors and the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission.
It is unclear to what degree that situation is connected to the Lakers sale, if at all, but the reselling of the franchise still represents one of the most surprising events in recent sports history.
"As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world," Iger and Kushner said in a joint statement. "We have immense respect for the leadership and vision of Jerry and Jeanie Buss. Josh Kushner and Bob Iger are set to become the new owners of the Los Angeles Lakers.
In a surprise turn of events, less than a year after Dodgers kingpin Mark Walter took the keys from the Buss family, he's flipping the franchise for a jaw-dropping $12 billion-plus.
The buyers? Venture capitalist Josh Kushner and former Disney man Bob Iger. The duo originally had their eyes on a Las Vegas expansion team, but when the chance to own purple-and-gold royalty popped up, they pivoted fast and a deal is set to be completed.
If approved by the league, this record-shattering Lakers takeover officially ushers Hollywood's favorite basketball team into a whole new era.
Kushner, a billionaire investor, is the founder of Thrive Capital, a venture capital firm with early stakes in tech giants like Instagram, Spotify, and OpenAI. He is also the co-founder of Oscar Health.

In a surprising turn of events, the new owner of the Los Angeles Lakers, Mark Walter, has reportedly decided to sell the team less than one year after his initial purchase. Walter finalized his purchase of a majority stake in the Lakers on October 30, 2025, for a then-record amount of $10 million.
Now, as ESPN's Ramona Shelburne first reported, Walter will sell the Lakers to businessman Josh Kushner and Bob Iger for a new record-setting amount of $12 million. Kushner and Iger were reportedly in conversations surrounding expanding the NBA to Las Vegas, but seemingly pivoted and made the move to purchase the Lakers.
The move has also fueled further questions about Walter's ownership of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Sparks, including whether he'll retain those franchises or sell them.
Walter previously bought the Dodgers through his ownership group, Guggenheim Baseball Management, in May 2012 for $2.15 billion. As for the Sparks, they're owned by another Walter-led investment group, Sparks LA Sports, which also includes Magic Johnson, and the team was purchased in 2014.
However, the Lakers move seems to be a solo sale, as it's been reported that Walter will not sell either the Dodgers or the Sparks. Shelburne specifically noted that Walter will not sell the Dodgers.

The Los Angeles Lakers could soon change hands again in a deal that underscores the soaring value of California's most iconic sports brands.
A group led by businessman Joshua Kushner and former Disney CEO Robert Iger has agreed to purchase the Lakers from owner Mark Walter in a transaction valued at $12 billion, according to statements released by the parties involved. If approved, the sale would set a new record for a North American sports franchise, eclipsing the $10 billion valuation attached to Walter's purchase of the team last year.
"As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world," Kushner and Iger said in a joint statement.
The buyers behind the record-setting Lakers deal come from two very different corners of the business world.
Joshua Kushner is a billionaire entrepreneur and venture capitalist best known as the founder of Thrive Capital, a New York-based investment firm that has backed some of the technology industry's biggest companies. Through Thrive and other investments, Kushner has built a reputation as one of the nation's most influential tech investors. He is also part of the Kushner family, a prominent name in real estate and business. Kushner is also the brother of Jared Kushner, who served as a senior adviser in President Donald Trump's first administration and is married to Trump's daughter. His father, real estate developer Charles Kushner, has served as U.S. ambassador to France since 2025.

Electronic Arts announced the completion of its acquisition by a consortium comprising Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, private equity firm Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners, the investment firm led by Jared Kushner. The deal, valued at $55 billion, closed on Tuesday, according to CNBC.
EA shareholders received $210 in cash per share. The company's stock has ceased trading and has been delisted from Nasdaq, EA said.
The consortium's agreement to acquire the Redwood City, California-based video game maker was first announced on September 29, 2025, and EA stockholders approved the deal at a special meeting on December 22, 2025.
Andrew Wilson, chairman and CEO of Electronic Arts, said in a statement that the company would "invest boldly, accelerate innovation, and build the next generation of games and experiences" with its new partners.
Turqi Alnowaiser, deputy governor and head of international investments at PIF, noted that the fund had been a minority investor in EA for more than five years. "Entertainment and sports are key areas of strategic focus for PIF, and are among the fastest growing and evolving sectors around the world," he said in a statement.

Our ****** ysts just identified a stock with the potential to be the next Nvidia. Tell us how you invest and we'll show you why it's our #1 pick. Tap here.
Madden NFL, the video game that allows you to escape reality by doing things like coaching the Jets to a Super Bowl, now belongs to Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund and, in a small but well-compensated way, the President of the United States' son-in-law.
The Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia closed its $55 billion purchase of Electronic Arts on Tuesday alongside Silver Lake and Jared Kushner's Affinity Partners. Shareholders collected $210 a share in cash. EA's stock stopped trading and comes off the Nasdaq, ending a 36-year public run.
It's the largest leveraged buyout in history, a phrase worth sitting with, because the previous record holder was the 2007 buyout of Texas utility TXU, which ended in one of the biggest bankruptcies in American history.
The financing is where this gets video game-level fun. PIF (which already owned roughly 9.9% of EA) borrowed $20 billion from JPMorgan, which also advised the consortium, so JPMorgan earned a fee for recommending the deal and now earns interest funding it. Kushner, who reportedly brokered the introduction between the Saudis and EA, runs a fund that PIF seeded with $2 billion in 2021 over the objections of PIF's own advisers. The money left Riyadh, hired a Kushner, and came home with EA Sports FC and Jedi Survivor.

Having tested the waters of managerial free agency, Mauricio Pochettino has decided to dive back into the world of international soccer, signing a new four-year deal to remain head coach of the U.S. Men's National Team.
His role since September 2024, Pochettino had little time to prepare his side for a home FIFA World Cup this summer. Ultimately, his team played some scintillating soccer at times as they won their group and their first knockout stage game since 2002, before being humbled in the Round of 16 by Belgium as they waved farewell to hopes of reaching their first quarterfinal in 24 years.

United States President Donald Trump is no stranger to controversy, and he found himself in yet another one when he involved himself in FIFA's ruling to rescind the red card suspension handed to United States striker Folarin Balogun. In July, one of the nation's top Democrats, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, demanded that FIFA turn over all records related to its communications with Trump, members of his administration, and the Trump Organization.
If Raskin follows through with the probe, he may find correspondence FIFA President Gianni Infantino does indeed have plans in the works tied to people close to the Trump administration.
Last week, The Times' Martyn Ziegler reported on Infantino's plans to sell a private stake in future World Cups to private investors, including Josh Kushner, the younger brother of Jared Kushner, the United States Special Envoy for Peace Missions and husband of Trump's daughter, Ivanka. Infantino backed off of his plans after they were met with global outrage, but the damage was already done.
There has been increasing pressure for Infantino to be ousted, and he is reportedly turning to the Trump administration for support.
"Gianni Infantino is set to hold a meeting with senior figures in the Trump administration as he seeks support to continue at FIFA. Infantino has already been calling federations for public support as pressure grows for him to resign," Ben Jacobs reported on Monday.

Less than two weeks after what was considered a successful World Cup, FIFA is drawing the wrong kind of headlines.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has brought forth a proposal to all of its 211 member ****** ociations to raise $20 billion through private investment by selling stakes in the top FIFA-run tournaments. That would include both the men's and women's World Cups.
The backlash has already started from confederations, including UEFA, which governs European soccer. But while calls to reject the plan have been loud, all Infantino needs is 106 of 211 votes to move forward. The cash infusion for bigger member ****** ociations, like Spain, France and England, among many others, is nothing compare to what the money could do for smaller countries looking to further develop the programs in their respective countries.
Here's a rundown of what's at stake and what could happen next.
Infantino, who has been in charge of FIFA since 2016, wants to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors, including Joshua Kushner, the brother of U.S. President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner. The transaction would be done through Thrive Capital, a venture-capital firm.
