The Cleveland Browns traded away Myles Garrett for Jared Verse and draft picks, and it will take years to know how good of a move that was.
The Browns' contract decisions since, though, feel like they're coming from an opposite line of thinking, though, which doesn't make a lot of sense.

Another ranking, and another list where the Chargers find themselves just outside the top 10.
ESPN recently ranked NFL teams based on their under-25 talent, and the Chargers came in at No. 11, narrowly missing out on a spot among the league's top young cores.
"The top young player for the Chargers is Alt, who is 23 years old and tasked with protecting quarterback Justin Herbert. Running back Omarion Hampton and tight end Oronde Gadsden (both 23) performed well for the Chargers in 2025. Wide receivers Ladd McConkey, Quentin Johnston and Tre' Harris are all 24.
"On defense, the underrated slot cornerback Tarheeb Still is still just 24 years old, while edge rusher Tuli Tuipulotu will turn 24 on Sept. 3. However, rookie first-rounder Mesidor does not qualify for this ranking, as he turned 25 in April."
The Chargers dropped one spot in the list compared to last year. Notable teams ahead of Los Angeles in this category are the Raiders, Browns and the Texans.

The Baltimore Ravens got some fantastic news on the first day of practice at training camp. Pro Bowl defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike was cleared to return after sustaining a career-threatening neck injury last season.
Madubuike was spotted in uniform ready to take part in practice Wednesday.
That's quite the development for both Madubuike and the team. After making the Pro Bowl in both 2023 and 2024, Madubuike sustained a serious neck injury during the team's Week 2 game against the Cleveland Browns last season.
Following that injury, there was concern over whether Madubuike would be able to play football again. That question lingered into April, when it was reported Madubuike underwent neck surgery that had doctors optimistic about his chances of getting back on the field in 2026.
Some cold water was thrown on that report just days before the Ravens opened training camp. On Saturday, the team placed Madubuike on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. While the team still believed Madubuike would return in 2026, it was possible the nose tackle would need some time before returning to the field.

Dan Campbell wasn't happy with the Detroit Lions' 2025-26 season, nor should he have been.
He said the Lions underachieved. That's hard to argue after a 9-8 record and no playoff berth. He gave himself "a freaking F" for the job he did last season.
"But I really don't believe we're that far off," Campbell said. "There's a couple of things we can do, and I just want to make sure we go after it. I'm not saying we weren't hungry, but let's get that hunger back, and we're going to bring in some guys to compete."
After a season like the Lions just had, ******* ody wants to hear how they were actually better than their disappointing record. But they were.

Former Ohio State and current Cleveland Browns defensive back Denzel Ward just got paid. He became the highest-paid DB back in 2022 with a five-year extension worth $100.5 million. That was eventually eclipsed, but with the news of Ward signing a two-year extension reportedly worth $62.2 million ($52.3 million guaranteed), he has reclaimed that distinction once again. The news was first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter.
After a distinguished career at Ohio State, where he was a consensus All-American and first-team All-Big Ten selection in 2017, Ward was selected by the Browns in the 2018 NFL draft with the No. 4 pick. That draft selection has paid off well for Cleveland. Not only did Ward make the PFWA All-Rookie team and has also been selected to five Pro Bowls.
During his 110-game career, Ward has racked up 361 tackles, 104 pass breakups, 18 interceptions and four touchdowns. He is on the shortlist as the best defensive back in the NFL.

As a reminder, Ohio State not only sends guys to the NFL, but they eventually get paid a ton of money as some of the best players in the League. Case in point to the Ward news: former OSU and current Seattle receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba recently made news by signing a record four-year contract extension worth $168.6 million ($120 million guaranteed).

The 49ers are making an addition to their defensive line group.
Mike Garafolo of NFL Media reports that they will sign defensive end KJ Henry. Henry worked out for the team on Tuesday,
Henry was a Commanders fifth-round pick in 2023 and he was let go as part of their final cuts in 2024. He was claimed by the Bengals and later moved on to the Cowboys and Eagles before the year was out. Henry also spent time with the Browns and Steelers last season.
Henry appeared in 15 games across all of those spots. He has 22 tackles and 2.5 sacks for his career.

It was always going to be tough for Xavier McKinney to top his first season with the Green Bay Packers, and indeed his second year in green and gold was more understated.
McKinney's eight picks in 2024 were the most by a Packer since Charles Woodson, who had nine back in 2009. Interceptions were harder to come by for Green Bay as a defense in 2025, and for McKinney it was no different.
It would therefore be easy to say his season was a relative disappointment, but the underlying numbers suggest it was anything but.
When looking at McKinney's rankings among eligible safeties in 2025 compared to 2024 in a range of statistics, there is plenty to feel good about from his second season with the Packers.
The lower interception count is notable, with only two in 2025, one of which he should have batted down instead on a fourth down versus the Browns.

Any type of big-money negotiations is tough. Neither side wants to budge, and neither wants to leave money on the table. A little give here, a concession here, until the deal is done – or both sides step away. Cleveland Browns fans have seen it play out time and time again.
For the most part, NFL contracts are handled by attorneys who are called sports agents. And they should be. Each NFL club has a lawyer who draws up the agreements, so it's only fitting that on the other side, a licensed, fully-schooled law school graduate should be looking it over for his client.

Back in the day, Green Bay Packers head coach Vince Lombardi traded anybody away who had an agent. He dealt with all contracts and wanted it one-on-one. Even though Lombardi wasn't the owner of the Packers, he acted like it and was the team's GM. Former Cleveland Browns Paul Brown was the same way. He always owned a small percentage of the Browns, but in every aspect, it was his decisions.
There is a little trick that sports agents do these days, called "back loading." What this is, the agent will get his client signed for, say, $60 million on a four-year deal. There is a signing bonus, workout incentives, plus other bonuses, and of course, the obligatory guarantee. The athlete gets paid $9 million the first year, $12 million in the second season, $14 million in Year 3, and then $25 million in the final year.

The Los Angeles Rams made a bold move to add star defender Myles Garrett, and it appears Garrett's value continues to rise.
Sports Illustrated ranked Garrett as the NFL's best edge rusher entering 2026.
"Without question, Garrett is the best edge rusher in the NFL—and perhaps even the best player in the game," wrote Sports Illustrated's Eva Geitheim. "This past season, Garrett made history, breaking the NFL's official single-season sack record, tallying 23 sacks during the season as he captured his second Defensive Player of the Year award. He also owns the record for most consecutive seasons with at least 12 sacks, having achieved this feat in six consecutive years from 2020 to '25."
"He has now been a first-team All-Pro in three consecutive seasons, and five times overall. He continues to make even the league's best offensive linemen lose sleep as he adds more signal-callers into his quarterback graveyard. In 2026, Garrett will take his talents to Hollywood—O.K., Inglewood—after the Browns traded him to the Rams. With the trade, he'll get the opportunity to add postseason success—and perhaps a ring—to his Hall of Fame résumé."
It means the Rams were more than justified in making the move for Garrett. There are rare situations in which a team should trade a Pro Bowl pass rusher before they've hit their prime, and if the Rams were to lose Jared Verse, Garrett is the only player that makes sense in the long run.

Denzel Boston
Boston was selected with the 39th pick in the second round of this year’s NFL Draft. Typically, one receiver emerges as a training camp standout, making highlight-reel catches or generating plenty of buzz from the local media. Gage Larvadain was the breakout training camp receiver last year, while Jamari Thrash filled that role the previous summer. It would not be surprising to see the rookie receiver follow suit.

Browns running back Quinshon Judkins' rookie season ended with an ugly injury in December, but it won't affect him in training camp.
Judkins is full-go for camp, seven months after surgery to repair his fractured fibula and dislocated ankle, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.
That's no surprise, as Judkins participated in the offseason program, but clearance for full contact practices was the last step.
The Browns took Judkins in the second round of last year's draft, but he didn't sign his rookie contract until September as he faced a misdemeanor battery charge that was eventually dismissed. After missing Week One, Judkins started Week Two and started every game until his injury ended his season in Week 16.
Judkins finished his rookie season with 230 carries for 827 yards and seven touchdowns, and he projects to be the Browns' top running back this season.

The crowd that crows about college football chaos compelling Congressional intervention will love this one, even if it's not much of a surprise.
Earlier this week, former Texas offensive lineman Cole Hutson secured a temporary restraining order allowing him to return to college football despite entering the draft, not being picked, participating in the Browns' and Cowboys' rookie minicamps, and not being signed by either team.
Via Pete Nakos of On3.com, a Texas judge granted the request for extra-extraordinary relief — one that often is presented and decided without the defendant having a chance to be heard. The next step will be a hearing on a motion for a preliminary injunction, which would extend the TRO through the resolution of the case.
It's very hard to secure a TRO. Hutson's success suggests that he'll also get a preliminary injunction at the hearing set for August 3.
Hutson's case follows a recent ruling by an Ohio judge granting a preliminary injunction to 24 athletes based on an age-based eligibility model for a fifth year. Hutson has played four years of college football, appearing in 48 games and making 23 starts.

We're only days away from the start of the New Orleans Saints' 2026 training camp, but some players are working their way back from injuries that derailed their 2025 seasons. Here's a look at each of the Saints players who returned after ending last season on injured reserve.
Means was dealt a bad hand with a bad ankle injury in the preseason, which put him out of action for the rest of the season. He's been active in workouts with Tyler Shough during the spring and offers a height-weight-speed combination not many other guys on the roster can boast at 6-foot-1, 212 pounds with 4.4 speed. But he's facing a ton of competition to make the squad in September.
Polk was acquired in a preseason trade with the New England Patriots, but he spent the 2025 season recovering from a shoulder injury suffered at Patriots training camp. He's worked hard to recover and build a rapport with his new quarterback Tyler Shough, and it's notable that he was one of several wideouts participating in the Drew Brees-led workouts in San Diego. Maybe a fresh start is just what he needed.
While he didn't technically play for the Saints last year, Emerson did miss the 2025 season recovering from Achilles surgery after going down early in Cleveland Browns training camp. And now he's healthy and taking reps whenever the Saints have been on the field. He could push Quincy Riley for snaps in the starting lineup across from Kool-Aid McKinstry.
Blackmon started at safety in Week 1 last year and stayed on the field for all 66 defensive snaps, plus three reps on special teams, but he noticed some discomfort after the game and was diagnosed with a torn labrum. He's dealt with labrum injuries before but this one required season-ending surgery. He's back in the starting lineup now that he's healthy.

Browns fans are expecting big things from Harold Fannin this year. After his impressive rookie season with 731 yards receiving, fans are predicting him to be in the 800-1,000 yard receiving range. For some of the league's elite tight ends, that's not too far-fetched. In fact, Travis Kelce has done it all 11 seasons he's been in the NFL. However, David Njoku, who was viewed as an explosive receiving tight end for Cleveland, only surpassed 800 yards once in his 9 years with the team. It's easy to jump to that being more indicative of the Browns' quarterback situation as opposed to the talent of the tight end himself.
Nonetheless, the most important part here is that Fannin is viewed as a big-time weapon for this offense. As a rookie, he showed a nice mix of acrobatic catches and the strength to generate yards after the catch that didn't seem like they were even there. If there's one negative on his receiving game as a rookie, it would be that, in my opinion, he sometimes dropped the easy ones.
To grow his game over time, he'll need to be a better in-line blocking tight end. It took Njoku a few years to get to that point. For now, we'll see how Todd Monken's offense utilizes Fannin. Will he be kept in the slot more often like he was as a rookie, with one of the other guys on the depth chart taking on a heavier blocking role?

Cleveland Browns general manager Andrew Berry has received mostly positive reviews for the work he did in the offseason to address the team's aging and injured offensive line.
Sure, there have been some grumblings that Berry may have overpaid in free agency, most notably guard Zion Johnson, but no one can say that Berry did not see a need and did what he could to fix it.
Teams have to look past just the upcoming season, of course, which is why Berry selected Spencer Fano, Austin Barber, and Parker Brailsford in the 2026 NFL Draft. Fano is expected to hold down the left tackle position for the next decade or so, Barber looks to have a future at either guard or tackle, and Brailsford will be looking to earn the starter's role at center this summer.
With the line mostly set for the next year or two, now could be a time to bring in a developmental player, one who has some skills but could use some polishing and some quality coaching from the likes of offensive line coach George Warhop.
A player like Dodji Dahoue, who is looking for a team after not sticking with the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent.

The Cleveland Browns will be without starting defensive tackle Maliek Collins at the start of training camp with rookies reporting to Berea today.
The veteran defensive tackle suffered a season-ending quad injury in Week 13 a year ago. This injury required surgery as the defensive starter was in the midst of a strong individual season that could have landed him in the Pro Bowl. Prior to his injury, Collins had racked up a career-high 6.5 sacks and seven tackles for loss through just 11 full games.
He is still recovering from that injury and will start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list.
Anticipating a massive year-two jump from 2025 NFL Draft fifth overall pick, Mason Graham, he is expected to once again headline the defensive tackle room under first-year defensive coordinator Mike Rutenberg. Former second rounder Mike Hall Jr. also enters a make-or-break season with the Browns after a disappointing sophomore season.
Free agent addition Kalia Davis, undrafted standout from last year Adin Huntington, and long-time practice squad player Sam Kamara round out the defensive tackle room at the start of training camp.

The coaching world is a small one, and as the days go by, it continues to get smaller.
Every single guy is on a one-man mission to get to the top of the sport and become a head coach somewhere. For some, the grind is too much, but for others, they make a life out of it. Now, as the NFL is in a little bit of a transition phase to the young, braniac coaches, there is another layer of the coaching world that is getting exposed. The perfect example of this is with Todd Monken and the two guys the Ravens hired as their head coach and offensive coordinator.
Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken was on the Ryan Ripken Show and was asked what his actual thoughts are about the Ravens' decision. In typical Monken fashion, he told the truth and nothing but the truth.
"It's bulls---," Monken exclaimed. " I don't know if everyone knows this. My first year as a GA at Notre Dame... in '91, I GA'd with Declan Doyle's dad, Chris Doyle... My second year at Notre Dame, I moved to defense, and I was a GA for Rick Minter, Jessie Minter's dad. It really just means my a-- is old. But, the reality is, I've got a ton of respect for those guys. They are fantastic coaches."

The Panthers agreed to terms with outside linebacker Cam Gill earlier Thursday. They filled an open roster spot later in the day by signing free agent tight end Caden Prieskorn.
Prieskorn, 26, spent time with the Lions and Broncos during training camp in 2025. He was briefly on the practice squad of the Bucs and then the Browns.
Cleveland signed Prieskorn to a futures contract but cut him May 19.
He played college ball at Ole Miss and Memphis and was offensive MVP of the 2023 Peach Bowl after catching 10 passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns.

The Baltimore Ravens made a notable roster move days before training camp, waiving undrafted rookie quarterback Diego Pavia to create room on the 90-man roster for veteran center Ethan Pocic.
The move ends Pavia's brief stay in Baltimore after the former Vanderbilt standout joined the Ravens as part of their offseason quarterback competition. Pavia arrived with name recognition after finishing second in the 2025 Heisman Trophy voting, but the numbers game changed once Baltimore officially added Pocic after he passed his physical.
Pocic's arrival addressed one of the Ravens' biggest roster questions. Baltimore needed another center option after Tyler Linderbaum left in free agency to sign with the Las Vegas Raiders. Pocic, a former Cleveland Browns starter, gives the Ravens a veteran candidate with extensive experience and a legitimate shot at the starting job.
That left Baltimore needing a roster spot, and Pavia became the casualty.
The Ravens entered the offseason with Lamar Jackson locked in as the franchise quarterback and Tyler Huntley back as an experienced backup. Pavia was competing for the No. 3 quarterback role during spring practices, but that battle now appears to be down to veteran Skylar Thompson and undrafted rookie Joe ******* nano.

Going by the numbers, no driver across NASCAR's top three national touring circuits is as popular as Toni Breidinger.
The 27-year-old who was the first Arab-American woman to compete in the top level of stockcar racing has more than 5.8 million combined followers across Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X and YouTube.
After being the only woman to race full-time in NASCAR last season, fans haven't heard much from her on the track this year. Due to her part-time schedule with Rackley W.A.R., Breidinger hasn't gotten behind the wheel of the No. 27 Chevrolet in the Craftsman Truck Series since the May 15 race at Dover — the race that wound up being Kyle Busch's last win before his shocking death.
But Breidinger has quietly been working on her racecraft. She's getting back to her roots this year and returned to racing late-models, winning a competition at the historic Hickory Motor Speedway on July 11. Days later, she was in New York City, stunting on the red carpet at the ESPYs — a display of how she's able to successfully balance her on-track aspirations with her modeling career.
This weekend, Breidinger returns to NASCAR when the Truck Series races at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park in Brownsburg, Indiana on Friday, July 24 at 8 p.m. ET. In the TSport 200, Breidinger will drive the No. 27 Chevrolet splashed with a Celsius paint scheme.

The New York Jets have heard plenty of skepticism this offseason. Apparently, there was room for a little more.
CBS Sports recently released its annual rankings of every NFL team's offensive "triplets" (quarterback, running back, and primary pass catcher). It didn't take long for the disrespect to flow.
The Jets landed 29th overall. Only the Tennessee **** ans, the Miami Dolphins, and the Cleveland Browns were ranked lower, placing New York firmly in the bottom tier despite an offseason that brought meaningful changes to the offense.
The ranking featured discussion about Geno Smith at quarterback, Breece Hall at running back, and Garrett Wilson as the Jets' featured receiver. According to CBS Sports, much of the skepticism stems from Smith's disappointing 2025 campaign with the Las Vegas Raiders.
"The Jets fell six spots here despite replacing Justin Fields with Geno Smith. It feels like they're being punished for Smith's awful season in Las Vegas, which unfolded under horrendous circumstances in arguably the NFL's worst offensive environment. (Tennessee is the only team that has an argument for being worse.) Smith is also getting up there in age, though, so it's possible that he's just on the downslide of his career and will never get back what he had for a few years in Seattle. The Jets and the next three teams on the list were separated by a total of 0.2 points in the rankings."

When C.J. Stroud's historic rookie season was wrapping up, imagining the Houston Texans quickly becoming a Super Bowl contender wasn't a stretch.
The Texans doing it in spite of Stroud is the surprise.
Nobody foresaw the situation the Texans find themselves in going into Stroud's fourth season. Houston has built what might be the best defense in the NFL. Edge rusher Will Anderson Jr. proved to be worth every bit of what the Texans gave up when they traded up to draft him, and Houston is physical and fast at all three levels.
Ask Josh Allen. The Texans abused Allen in a way he had never been before in his career during a 23-19 win over the Bills last season. The defense is stellar. And if Stroud had maintained or improved upon his rookie season level until now, the Texans would almost certainly be the best team in football. That hasn't happened. They weren't even the best team in the AFC South last season.

The most revamped position group in a long time for the Cleveland Browns is this year’s offensive line. Gone are Cam Robinson, Joel Bitonio, Ethan Pocic, Wyatt Teller, and Jack Conklin.
We feel pretty confident that Spencer Fano will start at left tackle, Tytus Howard will be at right tackle, and Zion Johnson will be at left guard. The other two positions are up for a debate, with a caveat. Even though two positions are available, Elgton Jenkins is practically guaranteed to fill one of them: the team is just trying to figure out if that will be at center or right guard.
If Jenkins is at center, then that opens up a competition at right guard between Teven Jenkins and KT Leveston. If E. Jenkins is put at right guard, then it could mean a spot for for rookie Parker Brailsford at center.

Former NFL head coach turned lead ESPN ******* yst decided to weigh in again on the Cleveland Browns quarterback situation.
Ryan was famously not the biggest fan of former quarterback Baker Mayfield and is definitely not a fan of current quarterback Shedeur Sanders. Well, only half of Shedeur Sanders.
Last week, Sanders posted a photoshoot that he and his brothers put together in the backyard of his house. It was Shedeur standing on a red carpet of just his 12 jerseys. The pictures that came out of it were pretty cool, but as everyone always does with Sanders, they had an opinion.
Was it pretty egotistical of Sanders? Sure. Was it harmful, ******* y, or a big deal? Absolutely not.
Former NFL head coach Rex Ryan took to X to give his opinion on the situation. He said, "Get a load of this kid… Great talent needs to realize as a "franchise" QB there has to be more we than me… Cmon man…"

The Cleveland Browns, after an offseason filled with plenty of ups-and-downs, will now look to right their wrongs during the 2026-27 NFL season.
Unfortunately for newly hired head coach Todd Monken, the quarterback position remains the most important question surrounding the organization heading into the upcoming season. Currently, the Browns are in a heated quarterback battle this offseason between second-year Shedeur Sanders and veteran Deshaun Watson, which is set to linger into the team's training camp period. Still, despite the fight for the starting quarterback role, both players continue to make progress prior to the beginning of the season.
When asked about how he has improved throughout the offseason, Sanders told reporters on Sunday at his recent Youth Camp that "everything improved" this offseason.
"If you talk to me, do you feel like I improved? I would say, overall, everything I improved," Sanders claimed. "The way I sleep, the way I breathe, the way I drink water, the way I do everything in my life—I improved. Everything improved."
After being selected in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, Sanders had an uphill battle throughout his first professional season.

With the Cleveland Browns' 2026 training camp about to kick off, the team made a roster move on Tuesday when they signed former Panthers and Denver Broncos cornerback Damarri Mathis. In order to make room for Mathis on the roster, the team waived corner Dom Jones, who failed a physical following his knee injury last season.
It's disappointing to see Jones fail a physical and get waived before training camp; he showed some flashes at times last season before his injury in November. There is always a chance that Jones comes back once he is healthy, but for now the team will get a look at Damarri Mathis and see if he can provide depth at corner.
Mathis was a fourth-round pick out of Pittsburgh in 2022 by the Denver Broncos and spent four seasons with the team before signing with the Carolina Panthers last year. He missed the entire season with the Panthers after tearing his ACL in September. Mathis spent his time as an outside corner when he was on the field for the Broncos.

Las Vegas has chimed in, and the odds for Cleveland's starting quarterback position have been updated and released. After the offseason wrapped up, the lean right now before camp is that the starting quarterback position is going to go to Deshaun Watson.
As it stands right now, Watson is the leader in the clubhouse with -215 odds to be the starting quarterback while Shedeur Sanders is in second place with +168 odds. Dillon Gabriel (+5500) and Taylen Green (+8000) round out spots three and four.
The two guys at the top of the list have separated themselves as the clear frontrunners for the Browns quarterback job. For different reasons, both quarterbacks enter the season with immense personal pressure riding on the year. For Watson, 2026 feels like it is a last-chance go at his career.
If it goes well for Watson, he can prove that he can still play quarterback in the NFL. If it doesn't, there is a very realistic chance that he never gets another chance at playing the position in the league.
For Sanders, he is fighting for his career in Cleveland. He will absolutely get another chance in the NFL if it doesn't work out in Cleveland, but this is his last chance at it.

The Cleveland Browns have been mostly a disappointment for the better part of the past 25 years.
The franchise has made the playoffs just three times and won just one postseason game since returning to the NFL in 1999. The Browns have had 19 seasons with double-digit losses, posted just the second 0-16 season in league history, and had so many starting quarterbacks and head coaches that it can be hard to remember them at times.
This season may be another rough one with a young team led by a first-time head coach and still searching for a quarterback. If the oddsmakers are correct, and they generally are, the 2026 season could bring the number of double-digit losses to an even 20.
But there will be plenty of time in the fall to talk about frustrating losses, bad quarterback play, and puzzling coaching decisions. The summer is a time for optimism as training camp brings exciting new players and a renewed hope that this year it may be different.
In that spirit, here are five positives from the offseason that should fill the hearts of even the grinchiest Browns fan with a little bit of happiness.
