Austin FC is at least keeping the end of its MLS season interesting.
For the second straight week, the Verde and Black pulled out points in the match's final moments, this time using Guilherme Biro's goal to earn a 1-1 draw Saturday with the San Jose Earthquakes at Q2 Stadium.
And while Austin FC is still five points out of the ninth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference with two months and 11 contests to go, it turned in another solid performance that indicates it should be in every match the rest of the way.
Here are four key takeaways from the contest as Austin FC (6-10-7, 25 points, 14th West) has a quick turnaround with a Wednesday home match against Colorado.
Credit has to be given to Brandon Vazquez and Christian Ramírez for their short passes in the box that eventually got the ball to him, but Biro was the one who put the ball past Earthquakes goalie Angus Gunn from a tough angle. Gunn had been brilliant most of the night, but in the sixth minute of stoppage time and one of the final kicks of the game, Biro came through in the clutch.

Some of the biggest names in women's boxing have paid tribute to Katie Taylor after the Irish great ended her career with victory over Flora Pili at Croke Park.
Unified lightweight champion Caroline Dubois called Taylor "one of the best to ever do it", while Claressa Shields said the 40-year-old deserved to "ride off into the sunset".
Taylor beat Pili on points in Dublin to become undisputed light-welterweight champion and retires with 26 wins from 27 professional contests, Olympic gold and three undisputed ******* le triumphs across two divisions.
"Thank you so much for paving the way," Londoner Dubois wrote on X. "Wishing you happiness, success and joy for this next season."
Taylor was sharper throughout, repeatedly beating the Frenchwoman to the punch before finishing with one final burst of combinations as the crowd rose to its feet.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court granted an emergency appeal from Republicans in a dispute over campaign ad prices on Friday, clearing a legal roadblock to political parties getting cheaper TV ad time ahead of the midterm elections.
The justices halted for now a lower-court ruling in favor of Democratic candidates who argued that cheaper broadcast ads should be limited to candidates. One justice publicly dissented from the unsigned order. It's the latest election-related appeal to come before the high court ahead of the pivotal November contests.
The Trump administration supported the emergency appeal from GOP campaign arms.
The decision comes on the heels of a June Supreme Court ruling that removed limits on parties spending money in coordination with candidates. It was seen as a boon to the GOP because the national party has a sizable cash advantage, and access to cheaper ad rates could boost that edge.
Among Democrats, meanwhile, some individual candidates have sizable fundraising advantages over their Republican opponents.

By this time next year, athletic contests outside are scheduled to take place at Geneva High School.
Work on the school's new athletic complex is scheduled to start at the end of September, District Superintendent Paul Lombardo said.
"Our goal is to be completed by June 2027," he said. "We want to play our first game at the new stadium."
Renderings of the facility show a turf field, stands which can hold 1,300 fans, press box, lights and eight-lane track.
Lombardo said the anticipation is building toward the new facility.

ESPN's "College GameDay" makes its return in Week 1 after sitting out Week 0. GameDay will attend the Clemson Tigers at LSU Tigers game in Week 1 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. LSU is starting the coach Lane Kiffin era and faces a challenge from one of the ACC's better teams in Clemson.
GameDay starts at 9 a.m. ET and runs until noon on Saturday, Sept. 5. GameDay will be aired on ESPN. The GameDay crew is expected to make their preseason national championship picks during the show, but we already know who Kirk Herbstreit thinks will win it all.
GameDay chose the Clemson-LSU game over other top Week 1 contests on Saturday like Auburn vs. Baylor, Boise State at Oregon, Washington State at Washington and UCLA at California. Other quality Week 1 games include Wisconsin versus Notre Dame and Louisville versus Ole Miss on Sunday. SMU also plays at Florida State on Monday. GameDay typically only attends games that are on Saturdays during the regular season.
In addition to the Clemson-LSU game, GameDay already announced that it plans to attend the Ohio State at Texas game in Week 2 and the LSU at Ole Miss game in Week 3.

Florida soccer continued its unbeaten start to the season with two more matches this past week. Although the Gators experienced a minor hiccup, the program remains firmly inside the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 and will look to use the results as motivation moving forward.
With another week of action ahead, Florida will have an opportunity to bounce back, return to the win column, and continue building momentum early in the season.
Here's a look at the latest Florida soccer weekly update, including how the Gators fared in their two matches, where they stand in the national rankings, and what's ahead for the program.
This past week, the Orange and Blue competed in two contests: Jacksonville and Florida Atlantic University. First, they took on JU at home and handled them convincingly. Substitute Lena Bailey led the team in goals with two, followed by Montelene Dymond, Zoe Main, Kaite Johnston, and Lori Watanabe, each contributing one goal as the Gators defeated Jacksonville 6-0.
Though they didn't lose their winning streak, it ended in a 1-1 tie on the road against FAU. UF was the much more aggressive team in the tie, but the Owls were locked down on defense, allowing only one goal on 18 shot attempts from the Gators and also recording 10 saves in the match to UF's 4.

As the Cowboys ****** emble their 2026 practice squad, they're not limiting themselves just to their own training camp players who didn't quite make the 53-man roster.
On Monday, the team announced they will be signing three-year veteran offensive lineman and Super Bowl LVIII winner Wanya Morris to the scout team.
Morris, 25, was originally a third-round draft pick by the Chiefs back in 2023. The former Tennessee and Oklahoma product started four games as a rookie for Kansas City and got into another 11 contests en route to their Super Bowl win over the 49ers. The following season, he started 11 games and saw time in every regular-season tilt, even catching a pass for a touchdown along the way.
The Georgia native was relegated to backup duty to start the 2025 campaign but still found the field in 12 games, until a December knee injury cut his season short.
The Falcons traded for Morris in June, but he did not survive Sunday's roster cutdown and went unclaimed on waivers.

The Denver Broncos' initial 53-man roster came down to the wire, having cut down from 91 players to 53 on Sunday afternoon. There were several surprises from the initial roster, from cutting fan-favorite draft picks to veteran playmakers. We take a more in-depth look at the winners and losers from the first iteration of the 53-man roster.
Ehlinger made a push for the backup quarterback position against Jarrett Stidham this summer. Stidham ended up starting two of Denver's preseason contests, giving him a leg up on Ehlinger. What sealed Ehlinger's spot on the 53-man roster was his performance on Friday against the Minnesota Vikings. Ehlinger went 15-of-20 for 233 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. General manager George Paton said that the team "didn't want to lose him" after a very competitive summer.
McLaughlin was the "last decision we made," according to Paton in a post-cut presser. The writing began to be on the wall when the Broncos put McLaughlin on the practice squad in 2025. McLaughlin became expendable when the Broncos drafted Jonah Coleman in the third round of the 2026 NFL draft.
Conversely, Badie was named to the 53-man roster ahead of McLaughlin. Badie struggled in the preseason, but was one of those players who coach Sean Payton apparently couldn't live without. Badie saw action in 15 of Denver's games, so the trust is there. The fact that Badie made the roster in place of McLaughlin tells a story of the skill set difference between the players.
"Mr. Irrelevant" showed his potential throughout the preseason, making tackles and even forcing a fumble. One could have made a strong case for Murdock, who played his ***** off in camp and the preseason. He was calling plays for Vance Joseph's defense and was one of the biggest surprises of the entire cut process. Hopefully Murdock clears waivers and will be on the practice squad. He was a likeable player, with an even better story.

The Colts are adding an offensive lineman to the roster on Sunday.
Tom Pelissero of Netflix reports that the Bills have agreed to trade center Sedrick Van Pran-Granger to Indianapolis. The Bills will also trade a 2027 seventh-round pick with the Colts sending a 2027 sixth-rounder back to Buffalo.
Van Pran-Granger was a 2024 fifth-round pick by the Bills and he played in 31 regular season games for the team. He started two of those contests and also appeared in three playoff games.
Tanor Bortolini is the starting center for the Colts and Van-Pran Granger will likely be slotted into a backup role with his new team.

The Dallas Cowboys have a chance to go undefeated in the preseason for the first time in two decades if they can defeat the New Orleans Saints on Friday night. Given the culture forged by head coach Brian Schottenheimer, the team wants to make it happen. While preseason results don't matter in regards to the regular season and playoffs, for some on the bottom of the roster fighting for a spot, it's everything.
The Cowboys might not know who's making the team at the end of the depth chart at receiver, offensive line, defensive line, linebacker, cornerback, or safety. It's rare, but occasionally a great showing in the final preseason game can be the thing that pushes someone onto the 53-man roster over someone else who doesn't have a good showing.
The Cowboys have one of the best defensive tackle combos in the NFL. If Quinnen Williams and Kenny Clark aren't the best, they're definitely top tier. Otito Ogbonnia is an impactful veteran run stopper, and then the cupboard looks bare.
Jonathan Bullard should be a good veteran, but he has been out all camp and could be a cut candidate who goes to the practice squad and then is called up once he is completely healthy. In 326 snaps last season, he had a run defense grade of 63.9, average at best.
The other three in the group include 2025 draft pick Jay Toia and undrafted free agent (UDFA) rookies D.J. Withers and Tommy Dunn. Through two preseason games, Toia's run defense grade dropped from 65.9 against the Seattle Seahawks to 23.1 against the Cardinals. Dunn was consistent with a PFF run grade of 66.8 in both contests, and Withers had a run grade of 70.2 in game one and 68.2 in game two.

Players for the New Orleans Saints and throughout the NFL make their final push for a roster spot in the final weekend of preseason action. The Saints, 0-2 thus far in preseason play, close out with a Friday game at the Dallas Cowboys. All NFL teams must trim down to a 53-man active roster by Sunday afternoon.
Every year in the NFL, there are surprising cuts from several teams. These are usually veterans, some with extensive starting experience. Here are some of the vested veterans who could find themselves looking for other teams when the Saints trim down their roster this weekend.
Howden is among up to eight players fighting for what is probably 2-3 remaining jobs in the New Orleans secondary. While one of the team's top special teams contributors, he's done little to make a mark defensively. In three NFL seasons, all with New Orleans, Howden has 2 interceptions (both in 2024), along with 7 pass breakups, a fumble return for a touchdown, 1 sack, and 2 tackles for loss. After major inconsistencies in coverage over his first two years, Howden saw only 25% of the team's defensive snaps in 2025 despite appearing in 16 contests.
Jordan Howden may be the odd-man out in the Saints secondary. He's been used as both a deep safety and in the slot, but New Orleans has better options at both positions. For Howden, it may come down to whether he's a better special teams player than the other defensive backs competing for those final couple spots.
Like Howden, Yiadom could be caught up in the numbers game without the playing ability to overcome it. Kool-Aid McKinstry and Quincy Riley will start, with Martin Emerson as the likely third corner. Jayden Price has also emerged with a strong training camp to earn a spot on the depth chart. Additionally, Jonas Sanker is being given the first shot at replacing the departed Alontae Taylor with Price, Julian Blackmon, and rookie Lorenzo Styles also in that mix.

SUAMICO – Bay Port football coach Steven Jorgensen said before the season that he wished he could celebrate wins a little more and forget losses a little easier.
His team most certainly will celebrate for a day after its Week 2 victory.
Bay Port beat Kimberly 28-13 on Aug. 27, starting the season 2-0 for the first time since 2022 and finally ending its losing streak to the Papermakers and their fifth-year coach, Chad Michalkiewicz.
The Pirates had lost the last four meetings in the series, including being held to 14 or fewer points in each of the last three games. It's the only three contests since 2022 in which Bay Port has failed to score more than 14 points.
Michalkiewicz was 6-0 against Bay Port since the alternate spring season in 2021, winning the final two showdowns of his tenure at De Pere and his first four after being hired at Kimberly in 2022.

MCDERMOTT — Holding a sizeable lead in terms of possession and shot opportunities is certainly a big deal in the sport of soccer. After all, executing in those areas only increases one's chances for multiple conversions on the scoreboard.
But at the end of the day, the only score that matters is the final score that's displayed on the home and away side.
Not a stranger to competitive contests when they've met up themselves, the Northwest Mohawks' and Valley Indians' boys soccer programs again battled in a competitive match Wednesday evening.
For much of the game, Valley held serve in terms of shots and time of possession, claiming a 28-2 shot advantage in the 80-minute affair with 17 shots on goal.
But a gritty Northwest defensive effort, led by 16 saves from junior goalkeeper Chase Kingrey and an early second minute goal from standout forward Luke Lewis, allowed the Mohawks to defend home and post a 1-1 tie Wednesday evening at Roy Rogers Field in McDermott.

Victor Wembanyama made a sensational return to the FIBA world stage Thursday, scoring 22 points in 21 minutes as Team France trounced Slovenia 92-67 in World Cup qualifying action.
For the 22-year-old Spurs superstar, recently minted as the French captain, it marked his first international game that counted since the Les Bleus took a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Wembanyama was a mixed bag in a pair of friendly contests against Nikola Jokic and the Serbian team last week. On Thursday, playing before a partisan home crowd at Bercy Arena in Paris, Wembanyama looked more like his All-World self.
In addition to several highlight reel plays, Wembanyama added nine rebounds as the French squad cruised to victory over a Slovenia team missing its top player in Luka Doncic. The Los Angeles Lakers' All-Star has opted to sit out this round of qualifying games due to family reasons.
With the win, the French continued their march toward next year's World Cup in Qatar. Les Bleus are 6-1 and in first place of Group L, with their next game coming Sunday against Sweden in Stockholm.

Luka Doncic's unofficial Los Angeles Lakers minicamp, which he held in his native Slovenia, is now over. All of his teammates took part in that minicamp, except for rookie Cameron Carr, who was required to attend an NBA rookie orientation.
Sandro Mamukelashvili, a big man the Lakers signed earlier this summer, attended the minicamp, but he left early in order to play for his native Georgia in the qualifier games for the 2027 FIBA World Cup. On Monday, Georgia took on Israel in an exhibition game ahead of the actual qualifier contests.
He didn't disappoint, as he dropped 20 points, six rebounds, six ****** ists and three steals. Thanks in large part to him, Georgia shoved past Israel for a 101-90 victory.
Georgia's first official qualifier contest of the second round will take place on Friday against Montenegro. Three days later, it will take on Greece, sans Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Slovenia is also vying for a spot in the FIBA World Cup, but Doncic already said that he won't play in any qualifying games this summer.

Through two preseason games, the Green Bay Packers have seen plenty of encouraging signs from the players who should have key roles in the regular season. The first game saw the third and fourth string units get exposed in the second half, but in both contests, the starting offense and defense looked solid at worst.
Is it too early to get excited about this team, though? That's certainly the message from one of its coordinators about one of his players, namely rookie kicker Trey Smack. Yes, he's 7-for-7 on field goals with three coming from 51 or more yards (plus another 58-yarder that was taken off the board due to a penalty), but Cam Achord isn't letting him get complacent, nor is he encouraging fans to get too hyped up yet either.
Likewise, MarShawn Lloyd has put in a couple of good performances in his bid to be the Packers' RB2, but we've seen some flashes from him in the past in preseason action. This year feels different, but he still needs to go out and do it in the regular season (and do it consistently), something we haven't yet observed.
So for now, let's be encouraged by some of these performances, but keep expectations in check. This team is still young and still coming together. While the expectations should still be to compete for an NFC North ***** le and make a Super Bowl run, there will surely still be some ***** ps along the way.
Game notes: Packers RB MarShawn Lloyd relished long-awaited return to end zone | Packers.com
Lloyd's last touchdown in a competitive game came almost three years ago, in November 2023. It helps the Packers to see him performing well in these preseason games, but he still has yet to get through a regular season game unscathed.

After falling just one game short of the postseason last year, the Charlotte Hornets still hold the longest current playoff drought in the NBA, which spans back to the 2015-16 season. However, in four offseason trades, the Hornets added plenty of playoff experience.
Between the trio of Pat Connaughton, Grant Williams and Coby White, they've combined for 152 games of playoff experience. That said, four of their main additions have an abundance of playoff minutes as well. Charlotte's most recent addition, Dennis Schroder, has appeared in 91 career playoff games. Veteran wing Royce O'Neale has played in 52 playoff games. Naz Reid has played in 48 playoff contests while Grayson Allen has suited up in 28. Lastly, 3-and-D wing Dorian Finney-Smith has played in 44 postseason matchups as well.
Not only will this added experience aid the Hornets in pursuit of the postseason, but these veterans will also be able to mentor Charlotte's young core headlined by Brandon Miller and Kon Knueppel that has yet to reach the playoffs.

Not long ago, the idea of playing an NFL game on a Wednesday seemed completely foreign. Now, Wednesday has become an increasingly important day of the week on the NFL calendar.
The upcoming season will feature two Wednesday contests: A Super Bowl rematch between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots on NBC opening night, and a new "Thanksgiving Eve" game between the Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Rams on Netflix the day before Thanksgiving. Just a couple years ago, the NFL made some unprecedented scheduling tweaks to ensure it could air two games on Christmas Day, which fell on a Wednesday, when only a year prior the league suggested it wouldn't utilize the holiday if it fell on Wednesday.
The willingness to schedule games on days of the week that it had not previously considered viable is part and parcel with the league's ambition to add more standalone window national games. But don't expect the league to roll out a weekly "Wednesday Night Football" package anytime soon.
When asked about the NFL's utilization of Wednesday during a conference call this week, the league's top media executive Hans Schroeder indicated Wednesday will still be used sparingly.
"I don't know if we're looking at Wednesday night football as a night for regularly scheduled NFL game," Schroeder said. "I do think if you look at the growth of Thanksgiving specifically, and that holiday, and how core football, and food, and family, and bringing all that together, that the growth of Thanksgiving over the last handful of years has just been tremendous."

The West Jersey Football League's United Division provides an opportunity for some of the 96-team leagues smallest teams to re-establish their programs against similar competition.
After the new United's six teams won a total of six games last fall, the coming two-year cycle should help these programs rise back to respectability.
Gloucester Catholic (0-10, 0-6 Royal) went winless last fall in the WJFL Royal but saw improvement as the season wore on. After scoring just two touchdowns in its first six games, the Rams scored eight touchdowns in their next three games.
For the Rams' non-United schedule, a Sept. 10 game against West Windsor-Plainsboro is a good opportunity to gauge the team's improvement this fall.
Haddon Township (2-8, 2-4 Royal) stopped a four-game skid to start last season with back-to-back impressive wins over Mastery Camden and Gloucester Catholic in WJFL Royal play. The Hawks then proceeded to drop its final four contests to end the season.

In their second matchup of a five-game road trip, Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever (23-12) travel north of the border on Tuesday night for the first time in franchise history to take on the Toronto Tempo (10-23) from Scotiabank Arena.
While the Fever are seeking their fifth straight win and have won 13 of their past 17 contests, the expansion Tempo have done the opposite in their inaugural season, dropping 10 straight. Indiana toppled Toronto 113-91 in Indianapolis back on June 16 behind a 21-point, 14-assist double-double from Clark.
In Indiana's highly entertaining 95-91 overtime win over the Atlanta Dream on Sunday, Clark led the offensive attack with 26 points and nine **** ists. Sunday's performance sealed the former Hawkeyes' second AP Player of the Week and fourth WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week honors, as she averaged 25.7 points and 9.7 **** ists per game on 50.9% shooting across Indiana's three games between Aug. 10-16.

Aug. 18 (UPI) -- NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has "no doubt' about future franchises based outside of the United States, he said in an interview published Tuesday.
Goodell, who told German broadcaster RTL/ntv about the plans, also said the league would first "like to see" an NFL team in an abroad city before it could host a Super Bowl.
"At some point, there will be NFL teams outside the USA," Goodell said. "I have no doubt that this will happen one day."
The NFL played its first regular-season game outside of the United States in 2005 under former commissioner Paul Tagliabue, when the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers met in Mexico City.
Goodell, who took over as commissioner in 2006, steered the league into many more abroad regular-season contests, with 61 such games held under his watch. Another nine will be held in 2026, setting a record for the most in the history of the league.

The condition of the playing field at the new Highmark Stadium was a talking point in the wake of last Saturday's preseason game between the Bills and the Panthers.
It was the first time that the Bills played a game on their new home field and there were moments where chunks of the grass field were torn from the ground during play. That led to the replacement of divots and the surface looking torn up by the end of the game, but Bills president Pete Guelli said that those circumstances weren't a surprise to the team.
Guelli told the **** ociated Press that "our grounds people were aware that was a possibility" with a field that was recently installed. He said the issues were "attended to quickly" and that the belief is the performance of the field will improve the longer that it is in place.
"From a playability and safety perspective, everybody's very happy," Guelli said. "It's Year 1. So it's a brand new field and it's going to take time for the foundation to build up. So some of the things people saw in the game, those will dissipate over time."
The Bills have one more preseason game at home this month and they will play their first regular season game in Week 2. The hope is that there will be more discussion about the quality of the play than the quality of the playing surface in those contests.

After starting the season on the road against Luka Doncic and the Los Angeles Lakers, the Golden State Warriors will have to wait to return home for their home opener in the Bay Area. In their second game of the 2026-27 slate, the Warriors will open the doors of Chase Center for the first time against the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday, Oct. 23 in San Francisco.
While Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson have headlined Golden State's matchups with Memphis in the past, the 2026-27 home opener will give the Warriors their first chance at a new-look Grizzlies rotation that is littered with young talent, including the No. 3 overall pick from the 2026 NBA draft. Cam Boozer will lead a Grizzlies youth movement alongside Cedric Coward, Zach Edey and Jaylen Wells.
Since Chase Center opened its doors in 2019, the Warriors have struggled in home openers, posting a 2-5 record in seven seasons in San Francisco. However, the Warriors snapped a three-game losing streak in home openers last year when Steph Curry dropped 42 points in an overtime win over the Nuggets.
The Warriors won all three contests against the Grizzlies last season, including a 17-point comeback led by Pat Spencer. Steph Curry only played in one of the three games against the Grizzlies last season.
Golden State's home opener will mark their first back-to-back of the season, with a game against Devin Booker, Dillon Brooks and the Suns the very next day in Arizona. The Warriors will only play two games at home in San Francisco in October. However, November starts with a lengthy homestand at Chase Center.

The No. 6-ranked TCU soccer team opened its season with a thrilling road matchup against No. 22 Wisconsin on Thursday evening. With the match scoreless late in the first half, the Horned Frogs sent in a corner kick that the Badgers own-goaled. The goal, which came in the 79th minute, allowed TCU to edge out Wisconsin 1-0 and kick off the season with a 1-0 record. The Horned Frogs won the game despite not recording a single shot on goal and being outshot by the Badgers 13-2. Olivia Geller recorded six saves and the shutout for the Horned Frogs.
Wisconsin outpaced TCU 9-4 in corner kicks. Despite that, the Horned Frogs earned their first win over the Badgers in program history, as the team had been 0-2-1 over its previous three contests. The game marked the second time that TCU opened the season against a ranked opponent under coach Eric Bell. It was the first time under Bell that the Horned Frogs opened the season against a ranked opponent on the road. Saturday afternoon's outing in Orchard Park, N.Y. didn't go too well for the Carolina Panthers, who looked quite helpless throughout much of their 29-14 loss to the Buffalo Bills. But the rather dull preseason showing did produce a bit of light—in the form of second-year wideout Ja'seem Reed.
The 23-year-old receiver accounted for the first of two touchdowns on the day for Carolina, as he powered a 6-yard slant into the end zone right before halftime. Reed, through two preseason contests, has now turned six targets into five receptions, 47 yards and two scores.
His work throughout the summer has caught the attention of many in and around the organization, including the man whose opinion may matter most by month's end.
Here's what president of football operations and general manager Dan Morgan had to say about Reed during the Panthers' broadcast of yesterday's game . . .
As an undrafted free-agent signee out of the University of San Diego in 2025, Reed flew under the radar during his first year in Carolina. He spent his entire rookie campaign on the practice squad, then re-upped with the organization on a reserve/future deal in January.
