Vitor Matos believes 39-year-old Jamie Vardy is still capable of making a mark in the Championship as the former England striker eyes a Burnley debut at Swansea City.
Vardy is set to be named in the Clarets squad to visit the Swansea.com Stadium, having joined Burnley this week after departing Italian club Cremonese.

Throughout the offseason, Chiefs players and coaches have spoken with a lot of excitement about running back Kenneth Walker and what he can bring to the offense.
That trend continued on Thursday with quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who noted the versatility Walker has displayed in practice through training camp.
"You've got to use that guy," Mahomes said of Walker in his Thursday press conference. "I mean, he's a talented football player. He runs tough. He has speed. He can break a touchdown at any moment. He can catch the ball. He does kind of it all.
"And so, when you have those guys on your team, you find ways to get them the football. If that's either just handing the ball off to them or throwing it to them, you've got to and so we got him for a reason. He came in with the right mindset and mentality, and he's really attacked this offseason. And so, I think he's as excited as anybody to get out there in Arrowhead and have Chiefs Kingdom behind him, and so him as well as Emmett [Johnson] and Brashard [Smith], I mean, we've got a good running back room, and we'll utilize those guys within this offense."

Starting hot with this one, as the Packers finished 22nd in rush defense last season, allowing 117.7 yards per game on the ground. The reports out of camp have been that Jordan Mason has looked very good, and if he can get going, with the rushing upside of Kyler Murray, who may look to scramble more in a new system, obtaining this feat isn't out of the question.
The Packers' offensive line allowed just 29 sacks a season ago, 7th fewest in the NFL. There is a hungry pass rusher in Minnesota, looking to stamp his place among the premier young EDGE rushers in Dallas Turner, and a division rival could be a good first matchup. Turner is going to come out of the gate swinging, totaling 1.5 sacks on Jordan Love. If Minnesota wants to finish in the top of the sacks rankings, it starts with Turner.
For the struggles Green Bay had against the run, they performed well against the pass, finishing 8th in pass defense. Last season, Justin Jefferson went over 100 yards just three times last season, but he starts 2026 off on the right foot. With a significantly better quarterback comes higher expectations, and finally having a quarterback who can get him the ball again will be a sight for sore eyes for number 18.

Saturday's improbable season-opening win by Michigan over Western Michigan was fueled by a controversial replay decision that seemed to mistakenly award the home team one final second after what appeared to be the last play.
The Big Ten has spoken on the matter — and it has released raw video of the replay process.
"Following video review, it was determined Western Michigan's #18 started his jump from an established out-of-bounds position (left foot) and made contact with the ball with one second remaining on the clock," the Big Ten said. "As shown in the provided video of what was viewed during the replay process, a side-by-side view of the play and the game clock, using a direct shot of the game clock in the stadium, was used to determine the final ruling.
"Eighty-five minutes prior to the game, all broadcast cameras used for the replay system, including the camera on the game clock, are synced using a strobe system to ensure all cameras are aligned.
"Per NCAA Football rule 4-2-3-a, 'A ball not in player control, other than a kick that scores a field goal, is out of bounds when it touches the ground, a player, a game official or anything else that is out-of-bound [sic], or that is on or outside a boundary line,' and thus the clock is stopped."

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Pat White's record-setting career at West Virginia two decades ago came full circle Saturday when the school retired his No. 5 jersey.
A ceremony was held before kickoff of the Mountaineers' season opener against Coastal Carolina. The crowd was decked out in white T-shirts and jerseys while West Virginia's players donned white road jerseys and pants, the same combination used 18 years after the school honored White in his final home game on a snowy December night.
White went 35-8 as a starter and established himself as one of the nation's top dual-threat quarterbacks. He is the only starting quarterback in NCAA history to win four bowl games, including the Sugar Bowl against Georgia after the 2005 season and the Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma after the 2007 season.
"Twenty years later, they're still talking about what he did and what his teammates did," West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez told reporters earlier in the week.
Rodriguez recruited White out of Daphne, Alabama, in 2004. Rodriguez gave him the chance to play quarterback, unlike other schools that wanted him to switch to different positions.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Devon Dampier threw for three touchdowns, Wayshawn Parker had the first three-touchdown game of his career and No. 21 Utah routed Idaho 66-14 coach Morgan Scalley's regular-season debut.
After 21 years at Utah, Kyle Whittingham moved to Michigan to make way for Scalley, the previous defensive coordinator who coached Utah's win over Nebraska last season in the Las Vegas Bowl.
Parker ran for 71 yards had two touchdown receptions and a 21-yard TD run, where he shed several tacklers, all in the first half.
Dampier, who was hampered by injuries last season, looked nimble and was accurate (13 for 18) except for some long-distance throws. He sat after the first drive of the second half — with Utah leading 38-7 — but still had 176 yards passing and 31 yards rushing while staying clean in the pocket.
Transfer wide receiver Braden Pegan dazzled with the hands and his feet — scoring on a 7-yard reception and a 12-yard end around. Backup QB Byrd Ficklin threw for 93 yards and two TDs and ran for 70 yards.

DeSoto (Texas) football was on the wrong end of a 38-14 beatdown on Saturday to open its 2026 season. The Eagles traveled to Florida for a top-25 national tilt against St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.) in the Broward County Classic High School Football Showcase.
The matchup already carried plenty of juice as it pitted one of Texas' top programs against one of Florida's. DeSoto, however added some fuel to the fire once the teams met at midfield before kickoff in Fort Lauderdale.

The Green Bay Packers made their first cut on the path to an initial 53-man roster, releasing safety Tra Fluellen to make room on the roster for the previously reported signing of veteran tight end Jonnu Smith.
Fluellen, who spent the 2026 season in the UFL, signed with the Packers on Aug. 11. He appeared in all three preseason games, playing 54 snaps on defense and seven on special teams. Fluellen is the first cut following the team's preseason finale win over the Arizona Cardinals on Friday night.
The Packers needed to make a roster move to make room for Smith, who is entering his ninth NFL season after spending last year with Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers. A versatile tight end with a long history of receiving production, Smith has 345 career receptions and 30 career receiving touchdowns. He played under Matt LaFleur with the Tennessee ****** ans in 2018.
Speaking with the Packers Radio Network before the preseason finale on Friday night, LaFleur called Smith a "great guy" in the locker room and an "explosive" player on the field.

On the same day Tottenham Hotspur manager Roberto de Zerbi reached out to Sandro Tonali, Newcastle United announced Lewis Miley had signed a new long-term contract.
Newcastle have recruited three midfielders this summer to offset the departures of Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes to Spurs and ***** nal, but it is rather telling that manager Matthias Jaissle is already a "big fan" of one he inherited.

NEW HAVEN - It doesn't take much to get Jakyi Wright to smile.
Even on the football field, during practice or a game, you will often see a smile on the face of the wide receiver from Hillhouse.
"That is an infectious smile," Hillhouse football coach Walter Gibbs said. "I try to get him not to smile so much, but he is such a good kid. He always has a positive attitude."
Wright, a junior, has plenty of reasons to smile. He is coming off a breakout season in which he quickly became one of the best receivers in the SCC and the state.
The 6-foot-1 Wright finished 2025 with 1,131 receiving yards and eight touchdowns, averaging 20.9 yards per reception. He was selected to the New Haven Register All-State Third Team last year, in addition to the All-SCC First Team.

Judging by their body language, India had already checked out of the fixture with Sri Lanka's lead over 200 runs and little time remaining. A result in India's favour was almost out of the equation and the visitors were waiting for the formalities to be completed. Yashasvi Jaiswal was introduced from the other end, and even Dhruv Jurel rolled his arm over as the writing was on the cards. India would rue drawing a Test they were in a very good position of winning, squandering the opportunity to bolster their World Test Championship (WTC) final chances.

Sometimes, draws feel like wins and Sri Lanka must have a similar feeling in Colombo. With chips down and backs to the wall, Sonal Dinusha produced a performance for the ages, who had an equally stubborn lower-order for company. He has been the rockstar for the hosts in this series and made India dance to his tunes when he battled for close to two days to eke out a hard-fought draw. The 25-year-old's sequence of scores in the series read 100, 84, 103 and 133*, and across the four innings his compact technique, composure and solid temperament stood out.

It wasn't easy; whenever he came out to bat, the team was in a spot of bother and he mostly had the lower-order and tail for company. In the second Test alone, he spent nearly 147 overs out in the middle, facing 71 overs, frustrating the visitors and keeping the win out of their reach.

It didn't help that Mohammed Siraj wasn't running in with the steam he would have liked and the pitch offered turn but not enough threat. The tone was set by the pair of Keshara Nuwantha and Dinusha for over 40 overs and the former ended up playing 150 deliveries in the process. Lahiru ***** ara and Asitha Fernando followed the drill and India just carried on in hopes of things miraculously falling into place.

The 116th over of the Sri Lankan innings was significant in more ways than one. Siraj patiently waited to bowl as Sarfaraz Khan suggested field changes to Shubman Gill before the fast bowler began. The short-ball trap was set. After trying it for two deliveries, which Sonal Dinusha ducked safely, the bowler walked up to the stumps and flipped the bails. This was India's second attempt, followed by a very creative field setting, likely the first of its kind that day.
The entire field moved towards the off-side, placing enough men in catching positions for a miscued drive. Dinusha had been pushed back for most of the over and here Siraj was trying to induce a false shot from the most consistent batter of the series. The plan didn't work but India's attempt to finally make things happen brought success when Prabath Jayasuriya was dismissed in the very next over while driving against Ravindra Jadeja. CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago White Sox placed reliever Huáscar Brazobán on the 15-day injured list Tuesday and recalled right-hander Jonathan Cannon from Triple-A Charlotte.
Chicago also put outfielder Andrew Benintendi on the bereavement/family medical emergency list before its game against the Texas Rangers. Infielder/outfielder Rikuu Nishida was recalled from Charlotte.
Brazobán, 36, has a left lat strain. The right-hander pitched one inning during Monday's 11-2 loss to Texas, allowing one run and one hit.
Brazobán was acquired in a trade with the New York Mets on Aug. 3. He has a 6.30 ERA in 10 appearances with Chicago.
The 26-year-old Cannon is 5-6 with a 5.18 ERA in 17 starts and five relief appearances for Charlotte this season. He has appeared in one game with Chicago, walking three and allowing a run while failing to get an out April 12 at Kansas City.

Real Madrid head coach José Mourinho has identified two areas in his squad as being short on numbers heading into the new campaign. That's according to The Athletic, who have this week provided an insight into the latest ongoings behind the scenes in the Spanish capital.
Real Madrid have of course been busy on the transfer front across the summer to date. Amid ongoing efforts to close the gap on arch rivals Barcelona, Los Blancos have reinforced the club's first-team ranks courtesy of six signings.

Celtic's League Cup quarter final match against Rangers at Ibrox has been confirmed as going ahead on Sunday, September 13 with a 12noon kick-off time.

XX-XY has also organized rallies around WNBA games this season in "Support of Sophie Cunningham" after the Fever star made comments about transgender athletes participating in women's sports.
In a statement provided to USA TODAY Sports, the WNBA said the fans shouldn't have been made to cover their clothing.
"The WNBA is aware of interactions at last night's game in Atlanta in which fans were asked by league security to cover their shirts," a league spokesperson said. "This should not have happened."
