Nvidia Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA), Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:META), OpenAI and Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) now appear on the same policy letter supporting open-weight AI. Anthropic does not. The letter published on July 24 asks U.S. policymakers to avoid broad restrictions on models whose weights can be downloaded, modified and run privately. OpenAI and Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL) joined after the initial publication, Axios reported on July 27.
Nvidia sells the hardware and software used to train and run AI models. A larger field of model developers, more local deployments, and cheaper inference can all expand demand for its products. Nvidia can benefit even if the models themselves become difficult to monetize.

Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ:META) has another reason to favor open weights. Its models can enter products and corporate systems that might otherwise rely on OpenAI or Anthropic. Outside developers improve the tools, hosting services and integrations around them. Meta can benefit through its applications, advertising business and infrastructure without charging for every model call.
Closed frontier labs can still justify their prices through better performance, enterprise support, reliability and safety. But every task an open model can perform well enough becomes harder to sell through an expensive proprietary API. Customers can also host a model themselves instead of sending data to one provider indefinitely. OpenAI and Anthropic could consequently lose some pricing power and customer lock-in.

Semiconductor stocks are falling out of bed and flashing red. Under the market's hood, the rally is still running green.
The PHLX Semiconductor Index (^SOX) briefly broke below 11,000 Tuesday, now down over 25% from its June peak, as another wave of selling swept from South Korea through US chip stocks.
The test marks the latest failure for a group that was already testing a make-or-break level earlier this month. The Roundhill Memory ETF (DRAM) fell roughly 11% Tuesday and is down over 40% from its June high.
The damage runs through some of the biggest memory names.
SK Hynix (SKHY) fell to an all-time low in US trading after dropping below the $149 offering price from its blockbuster US debut earlier this month.

Wisconsin democratic socialist state Rep. Francesca Hong, the Democratic primary frontrunner in the race for governor, sidestepped repeated questions from Politico reporter Jonathan Martin Tuesday at Marquette University in Milwaukee about whether she still wants to abolish police after a televised debate in which she pledged to preserve law enforcement funding amid scrutiny of her previous position.
"So, this system is not working," Hong said. "If we want to be serious, we better be putting these billions into things we know prevent crime."
Martin asked whether Hong still wanted to abolish police in the long term. Hong did not answer yes or no, instead calling for "systems of care" and redirecting criminal justice spending before a campaign aide ushered her away.
"I believe that we have to be serious about public safety, and I'm going to be a governor that is more serious than anyone else in making sure that we are building systems of care," Hong said.

Altria Group (NYSE:MO) sells cigarettes, oral nicotine pouches, and vapor products to adult tobacco users in the US. It's the parent of Marlboro, still the country's top-selling cigarette brand. The stock showed up in Donald Trump's disclosed portfolio, and it's easy to see the appeal: over 50 straight years of dividend increases and a business that doesn't move much with the economic cycle.
Altria stock is up around 25% year to date. Over the trailing 12 months, the stock is up about 24%, ahead of the market's 19% gain. Only Philip Morris, up 21% YTD, comes close among the major tobacco names. British American Tobacco and ***** an Tobacco are each up 10%.
Altria's Q1 2026 earnings beat expectations on both lines. Net revenue grew 3.2% year over year mostly from pricing, not volume. Adjusted diluted EPS grew 7.3%, up from 4.4% growth in 2025.
The volume story is also improving. Altria's smokeable segment declined just 4% in Q1 2026, down sharply from a 12% decline a year earlier. On the oral tobacco side, on! PLUS nicotine pouches rolled out nationwide in March and are now in roughly 100,000 stores, covering 85% of the nicotine pouch category by volume. On!'s own volume grew 17.6% year-over-year in Q1, after growing 11% for all of 2025. It's also the first product authorized under the FDA's streamlined pilot review program for oral nicotine pouches.

PayPal (PYPL) stock rose more than 4% on Tuesday after the payments giant defended its multiyear turnaround plan without completely closing the door to a potential merger.
"While there is still significant work ahead, I have strong conviction in our direction and in our ability to execute," PayPal president and CEO Enrique Lores said.
"At the same time, we remain open and objective in evaluating opportunities," he added. "If we see levers or a path that we believe would create superior value for our shareholders that execute in our current strategy, we would, of course, carefully consider them."
Earlier this year, Stripe and private equity firm Advent offered to acquire PayPal for around $60 per share, according to a report from Reuters earlier this month. The news sent PayPal's stock surging.
"For now, while we remain open, our focus is on executing our own strategic plan," Lores added.

The Euro has gone back and forth during the course of the trading session here on Tuesday as we continue to hang on by a thread. We are at the bottom of a recent consolidation area, and I do think at least at this point in time there are a lot of questions to ask when it comes to the Euro. Interest rates in America will be a big driver typically of this currency pair, and despite the fact that rates have drifted a little bit lower, they are still uncomfortably high, and there are concerns in the Middle East, which has a major influence on that as well.
The recent area of consolidation could be in the process of trying to form a double bottom; we'll just have to wait and see. Short-term rallies will more likely than not continue to be swimming upstream if recent history is to be believed.
The pound initially tried to rally but then gave back gains as the market is still hanging around the 1.33 level. This is with elevated US rates. There are concerns in the Middle East, and sometimes traders will run to the US dollar in times of concern. It is possible that's what's going on here. The market is likely to continue to be noisy, but it has decidedly turned bearish over the last couple of weeks.
And the US dollar continues to grind higher against the Swiss Franc. The positive swap differential favors the US dollar as traders continue to see value in the greenback. We had recently consolidated and now have broken out of that little consolidation range to show increasing bullish pressure.
The market is typically one that's very choppy and somewhat sideways, and more of a grind even when it does trend, so patience is something that I typically find I have to employ here against the Franc. But getting paid at the end of every day is a huge bonus here with that positive swap, and right now I think that is one of the main drivers.

A pit in my stomach formed last night in the train as I read Hugging Face's latest blog post on how its servers got hacked by OpenAI's models in early July. I had printed out the 23-page report for the ride since service can be spotty underground. Seeing the story laid out in physical form underscored just how outrageous it is. I wondered if the person next to me was peering over my shoulder at my strange, stapled Sci-Fi novel on the first significant autonomous AI hack.
Alongside the Hugging Face report, OpenAI published a few more details in a seven-bullet-point update to its July 21 blog that revealed its models' involvement in the incident. OpenAI contributed to Hugging Face's post-mortem, and said it plans to publish more of its side of the story "in the coming weeks" after completing a thorough internal review. OpenAI faces significant pressure to do so from security researchers, executives, and, well, just about everyone in the AI industry to share learnings and ensure the proper guardrails are in place going forward.
How OpenAI's technology escaped a sandbox and hacked into another company is a remarkable story, and one in which the details are still coming in piecemeal. But here's what we know so far and what we're still waiting to find out.
Another tech company called Modal Labs said OpenAI's agent also accessed its systems, as first reported by Reuters on Tuesday and confirmed by Fortune. Though that's a somewhat shocking twist in this tale, it's not even the full scope of the attack.
OpenAI's updated blog post confirms the models broke into four accounts across four publicly available services in total. The company did not name them, but said it would "notify service owners directly." We can expect more of this information to come out in time, but OpenAI says so far it has "not identified any other activity at the level of severity or scale of what we've shared related to Hugging Face, which involved a platform-level compromise."

Football is back in Las Vegas. The Raiders officially began their journey to prepare for the 2026 season today with the start of training camp. It was a shortened practice -- 1.5 hours instead of two -- and it was a day to ease the players back into things. But there was still a few good plays to be that deserve some credit.
Here are my standouts for the Raiders from their first camp practice.
He went on a cross from right to left and laid out to make the grab with a defender in his hip pocket for the best catch of the day.
Read the play, shed a block and quickly tracked Ashton Jeanty to the right side to smother him at the line on a run.
Stuck right with Tre Tucker on a deep corner route and played it perfectly, turning to the outside as the ball arrived. He played it so well, he should have intercepted it, but was only able to knock it down. Still an impressive play.

The Las Vegas Raiders did much to improve their roster this offseason. While the Raiders are still a developing team, they addressed areas of need well in preparation for next season.
Sports Illustrated's Eva Geitheim labeled the Raiders as the most improved team of the offseason due to the range of improvements that the team made dating back to last winter.
"The Raiders entered the offseason with more cap ***** e than any other team, and proceeded to use that money wisely by retooling their roster with the additions of Tyler Linderbaum, Quay Walker, Nakobe Dean, Kwity Paye and Jalen Nailor in free agency. Not only did the Raiders turn to the open market to bolster the roster, they changed the coaching staff—highlighted by the addition of Klint Kubiak, fresh off a Super Bowl win as the Seahawks' offensive coordinator—and used the No. 1 pick on Heisman Trophy–winning quarterback Fernando Mendoza."
Other teams around the league, including the Tennessee ***** ans, Cincinnati Bengals and Minnesota Vikings improved their rosters greatly this offseason as well. To the credit of the Raiders though, they made a multitude of moves that gave them the veteran and youthful talent that they need on the offensive line, at quarterback, running back and on defense for next season.

It's no secret that ESPN host Stephen A. Smith and NBA star LeBron James don't get along.
On Monday, Smith defended James after President Donald Trump called James "racist" last week when taking questions from reporters.
This, even for a hot take machine like Smith, was "beyond the pale."
"It's embarrassing," Smith said in a video posted on YouTube. "You're the commander-in-chief, you're the president of the United States, and you're going to come out and you're going to call this black man, who's universally recognized one of the greatest athletes who have ever lived, who has been an upstanding citizen, somebody I don't get along with, and I'm still willing to concede he's great."
Smith argued that Trump is resorting to calling James racist simply because James has never supported Trump politically.

It's been almost four weeks since Shohei Ohtani last pitched in a game, still managing the left knee inflammation that still isn't 100 percent. But that's not the only injury the Dodgers superstar is dealing with.
After Tuesday night's game, Ohtani revealed that his right bicep has also been bothering him. That was part of the reason that his planned bullpen session over the weekend in New York was scrapped.
"It started with the knee, and the bicep thing started when he took a swing — I don't know, three or four weeks ago. Then as we got to the break we wanted him to rest his knee, to rest his body and arm. Then as he started ramping back up, in the bullpen … it just wasn't responding. Nor was his knee," manager Dave Roberts told reporters Tuesday night, as shown on SportsNet LA. "There is an effect from the lower half to the compromising of the upper half. So trying to mitigate that, we stopped the throwing, stopped the bullpens, trying to take care of the knee and hopefully not try to create velocity with the arm that's not 100 percent."
Ken Rosenthal at The Athletic wrote about how Ohtani's injuries, which might prevent him from pitching in October (though the Dodgers insist his rest now is a precaution and that they expect him to pitch in the postseason), could increase the Dodgers likelihood to pursue Tarik Skubal before next Monday's trade deadline.
Ohtani homered and doubled on Tuesday, part of a three-hit game against the Mariners. But he's hitting .250/.307/.500 in July, decent numbers but well below his established norms. Since the All-Star break, Ohtani is hitting .238/.283/.405.

The Atlanta Braves made the ultra-aggressive move to promote their star infield prospect Tate Southisene to Double-A at the age of 19 after just 104 professional games, but his run with the Clingstones is going to have an unfortunate interruption. In the second inning of his debut on Tuesday night Southisene was hit in the wrist by an errant sinker up-and-in, and while he initially remained in the game to run the bases he was pulled in between innings. The Columbus Clingstones announced that the Braves 2025 first round pick, who received a $2,622,500 signing bonus last summer, would be placed on the injured list, halting his meteoric rise through Atlanta's ranks.
Southisene has been nothing short of phenomenal in his first full season of professional baseball, with a 139 wRC+ split across Single-A Augusta and High-A Rome. He spent most of the season in Single-A, where he hit .297/.429/.500 with eight home runs and 36 stolen bases in 51 games, before what was seen as an aggressive call up to High-A in early June. Southisene took about a series to adjust to High-A pitching before going on a rampage and hitting .272/.393/.456 over his final 30 games in High-A. His power numbers did take a dip, but his ability to work deep counts and recognize the strike zone is years ahead of the typical 19-year-old and that approach is what gave the Braves confidence he could succeed in Double-A. Southisene is starting to get top 100 looks nationally, and though his ultimate defensive home is still up in the air he is seen as one of the best position player prospects in recent seasons for the Braves and a player who projects to being at least a solid major league regular.

The 15-year-old's meteoric rise headlines the latest rankings update, while Ishan Kishan tightened his grip on the world No. 1 spot after registering the third-highest batting rating in T20I history during the Harare series.
Sooryavanshi announced himself on the international stage with a memorable series against Zimbabwe, scoring 151 runs in three matches at an average of 50.33. The versatile left-back will be wearing the number in a rather unorthodox manner, as the No. 11 is normally ***** ociated with forward players. While defensive players definitely have worn similar numbers before, it is still considered a departure from tradition.
However, Bayern is no stranger to odd number choices, with backup striker Sandro Wagner choosing the No. 2 and central midfielder Xabi Alonso wearing the No. 3 in his debut season. The latter did switch to his preferred No. 14 in the season after, though.
According to board member for sport Max Eberl, as captured by iMiaSanMia, the number was originally offered to winger Michael Olise, who wears the number for France. However, Olise reportedly wanted to keep his No. 17 shirt for Bayern. Whether the number was also offered to fellow winger Luis Díaz is unknown.
Bayern's No. 11 has had a variety of owners over the past decade, including Douglas Costa, James Rodríguez, and Kingsley Coman. The number was most recently worn by Chelsea loanee Nicolas Jackson. Perhaps the most notable player who wore it was Stefan Effenberg, who captained Bayern to a Bundesliga and Champions League double while wearing said number.

So much for the beginning of the big quarterback competition at training camp for the Atlanta Falcons. The team opened camp this morning with exactly one healthy option at the game's most important position: undrafted rookie Jack Strand.
The biggest news is that Michael Penix has still not been cleared for 11-on-11 drills despite hoping to be cleared in time for camp. Tua Tagovailoa is out for now with a minor back injury. To make do, the Falcons have released their third-string quarterback Trevor Siemien and signed capable career backup Cooper Rush.
Given the way training camp has started, it's tough to argue that this team is poised for a big breakthrough this season from the NFC's longest-running playoff drought. According to Bleacher Report, Atlanta is one of the NFL's 11 most-cursed franchises, coming in at No. 6 on their list.
"They suffered arguably the most extreme big-game choke in modern sports history in the 2016 Super Bowl, and they haven't won a division **** le since then. Gianni Infantino has instructed FIFA's 211 member ****** ociations to approve his World Cup commercialization strategy by mid-September - or forfeit the possibility of nearly $7.5 billion in additional revenue.
The scheming FIFA president has dispatched a letter to the ****** ociations, stating: "Should you wish to proceed, this $10billion package will become available as of January 1, 2027, ushering in the next phase of our journey together. Pitching development has been the Red Sox's bread and ******* er under Craig Breslow. Since Breslow took over, the organization has invested heavily in the pitching pipeline. In his first two drafts, 28 of the team's 41 picks were spent on pitchers — 29 if you count two-way player Conrad Cason. At the major league level, Hunter Dobbins, Richard Fitts, Payton Tolle, Connelly Early, and Jake Bennett have all contributed after spending time in the system.
This season, the draft was more balanced, but several pitchers were still selected in the middle and later rounds. One of them was left-hander Brett Lanman out of Abilene Christian University, selected in the fifth round. Lanman, like many of the pitchers acquired by Breslow during his tenure as Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer, is huge. He's listed at 6-5, 230 pounds, and uses that frame to extend down the mound and help his pitches play up. While no two pitchers are the same, he's excited to get to an organization with a recent track record of getting young arms to the major leagues.
"I'm ready to get to work, cause these guys know what they're talking about," Lanman said. "They've developed these guys, and they're in the big leagues. It's like, man, they know, they know what it takes to get a left-handed pitcher into the big leagues pretty quickly."
Draft picks, to an extent, are lottery tickets. It's incredibly rare for a draft pick to enter the league as a major league-level talent. Paul Skeneses (Skenesi? Skenes?) don't grow on trees, and if they did, they'd all be first-round picks. Lanman, as a fifth-round pick, is far from a finished product. If he were, his ERA in his final season at ACU likely would have been lower than 5.35. The Red Sox didn't select the lefty because of his college results. They picked him because of who they believe he can become.
Potential is based on traits, such as being huge and left-handed. Lanman is both huge (6-5, 230) and left-handed. He also has a low release point and plus extension, creating a flat attack angle for his fastball. Most starting pitchers who succeed have a fastball as the foundation. Lanman knows that his heater is what's brought him this far, and that's what the Red Sox will want to build upon.
