Ivanka Trump flaunts her surfing skills during a family trip to Costa Rica. President Donald Trump's daughter donned a black wetsuit and white full-sleeved top over it, with her hair tied in neat braids. Her husband, Jared Kushner, and the couple's children, Arabella Rose, Joseph Frederick, and Theodore James, didn't appear to be present.
Ivanka Trump gave a glimpse into her summer holidays by putting her surfing skills to the test in Costa Rica. The 44-year-old shared a lengthy carousel showcasing some wholesome, candid moments from her recent summer break. The photos accompanied the caption: "Summer Snaps."
Although Trump did not share photos of herself surfing in a white wetsuit, Page Six published the photos. The 44-year-old showed off her athletic prowess on a green surfboard, with an instructor reportedly guiding her through the process.
Trump did not wear any makeup, and her skin looked flushed due to the intense water activity. However, she was seen with a dainty bracelet or her hair tie on her wrist and a surf leash on the right ankle. At one point, Trump slipped and fell in the ocean but got back on her feet to surf again. In a few other snaps, she flaunted a candid smile, indicating that she seemingly enjoyed surfing by herself.
The US President's daughter might have enjoyed her surfing outing, but the internet wasn't particularly impressed by it. One fan commented, "I think you mean—'took surfing lessons.'" A second fan quipped, "If you show her dad these pics he might stay awake in meetings!" A third fan joked, "Those pictures look like a poor photoshop job." A fourth fan wrote, "That's not surfing, it's yachting with fins."

Chelsea claimed a 3-2 win over Fulham in their Premier League opener as Xabi Alonso marked his debut with three points.
The Blues went ahead after just 32 seconds as Cole Palmer, seemingly back to his best, slipped in Joao Pedro, who finished confidently.
However, Chelsea allowed their opponents back into the game as Robert Sanchez let a Joshua King shot in at the near post following a poor diving attempt.
Moments earlier, the Chelsea shot-stopper had made a basic kicking error. Luckily for him, Morgan Rogers got the second, and Palmer struck in the third.
Another subpar moment from Sanchez gifted Gonzalo Garcia a goal, but Chelsea saw out the victory, winning their opening league game for the first time since 2022/23.

TWENTY-FOUR SERVICE ERRORS.
How did Marquette get to a fifth set against #2 Texas on Monday night at Fiserv Forum? The Longhorns handed Marquette 24 of their 93 points — 25.8%! — in the match by way of just completely whiffing on a serve, either long or into the net. Over and over and over and over again. Four in the first, eight in the second, four in the third, six in the fourth, including the point that tipped the match to a fifth set, and then two more in the final frame as well.
Honestly, it's amazing that the eight errors in the second didn't bite them in the ******* worse, as UT won that frame 25-19, nearly entirely because of a 7-0 run late in the frame. Turns out Marquette hitting -0.167 in the set with six errors against five kills was very bad for the Golden Eagles' chances of winning this match!
Here's what happened as Texas slipped past the Golden Eagles in the final match of the AVCA First Serve event:
First, Marquette got a 25-22 first set victory, largely because they turned 14-all into 19-14 and then held on from there.

The White Sox got steamrolled, 11-2, by a team that entered the game worse than .500. The pitching was terrible, the bats were ice-cold, and the Rangers took advantage of the long ball on several occasions.
José Urquidy did not have a great start, tossing 39 pitches in his first frame. He walked the leadoff batter and the third batter, then hit Brandon Nimmo with a pitch to load the bases with only one out. Ezequiel Duran grounded into a force out at second, but sent Joc Pederson home. Evan Carter doubled, putting the second run on the board. With two outs, Jake Burger picked up a walk, but a pop-up from Elias Díaz would finally stop the damage. Miguel Vargas singled with two outs, and Andrew Benintendi nearly tied the game and would have with just a bit more wind, but Nimmo jumped up to rob the good guys of any runs.
With two outs in the top of the second, Corey Seager singled and was safe at second after Colson Montgomery scooped up a single from Wyatt Langford. Drew Romo blew through the first challenge as Nimmo picked up a walk to load the bases, with Urquidy already passing the 50-pitch mark. Chase Meidroth slipped, unable to grab what should've been an easy out, and another run came in on an infield single from Duran. Pederson, after not getting his challenge call in on time on a strikeout, continued to throw a tantrum, leading to his ejection. Romo ended additional on-field drama by tagging home for the inning-ending force-out. Braden Montgomery singled for the Good Guys, and with two outs, Tristan Peters took a slider and made the Rangers pay, cutting the deficit to 3-2. That home run put him in double-digits and his 10th homer this season:
View Link
With one out in the top of the third, Elias Díaz was hit by a pitch, and Cody Freeman singled. Seager caused more damage with a two-run double, giving the Rangers a 5-2 lead with two outs. The frame ended with a pop fly, but also on 93 pitches for Urquidy. The the bottom half Munetaka Murakami singled and Miguel Vargas walked to put two on base early. Benintendi grounded into a fielder's choice, and Braden Montgomery picked up a walk to load the bases. Of course, the next two batters struck out to strand all three runners.

LONDON, Aug 24 (Reuters) - Oil prices slipped more than $1 a barrel on Monday as investors took profits after recent gains and awaited details of expected new U.S. sanctions on Iran, which could ‌further disrupt supplies from the Middle East.

BANGKOK (AP) — World shares were mostly lower and oil prices slipped on Monday at the outset of a week capped by an annual meeting of top U.S. economic officials at Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
Iran's currency hit a record low as the U.S. prepared to announce new sanctions to try to break the impasse with Iran, adding pressure when its economy is already battered by earlier sanctions and a U.S. naval blockade.
The rial dropped to 2.02 million to the U.S. dollar on informal currency markets. Iran's official Central Bank rate stood at around 1.5 million rial to the dollar, but the informal rate is what most Iranians pay.
In early European trading, Germany's DAX edged 0.1% lower to 26,110.79, while the CAC 40 in Paris also gave up 0.1%, to 8,474.35. Britain's FTSE 100 inched up 0.1% to 10,831.33.
The future for the S&P 500 was down 0.2%, while that for the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.1%.

LONDON/SYDNEY, Aug 24 (Reuters) - Global stocks slipped on Monday and oil prices eased as investors awaited details of threatened U.S. sanctions on Iran, while the Canadian dollar dipped as a trade war loomed with its southern neighbour.
U.S. Treasury ‌Secretary Scott Bessent is due to hold a press conference later on Monday to outline sanctions on Iran, which has shown no sign ‌of relinquishing its control over the vital Strait of Hormuz.
Oil futures were down more than 1% ahead of the announcement as some oil traders took profits after big gains last week. [O/R]

LeBron James is no longer a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, but he made his mark on the franchise during his eight years with it. He consistently played at a high level during that time, even if certain aspects of his game had clearly slipped, and he delivered an NBA championship in 2020.
As we take a look at James' greatest performances as a member of the Lakers in chronological order, we go back to his highest-scoring game with L.A., which took place on March 5, 2022.
The 2021-22 season was initially supposed to be a return to glory for a Lakers team that won the 2020 NBA championship, only to succumb to injuries and lose in the first round of the playoffs the following season. Los Angeles had traded for Russell Westbrook, apparently at James' behest, but he never fit in, and by midseason, it became clear that this experiment wasn't going to work.
It seemed like whatever could go wrong did go wrong that season. The team could never string together any momentum or stay above .500, and by the time the All-Star break had passed, there seemed to be a feeling that it was merely playing out the string.
But on one Saturday night in March, things seemed just right enough with the Lakers, and it was mostly because of James.

On August 13, ARS Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:SPRY) held its second-quarter 2026 earnings call, the first for new President and CEO Donn Casale. He used it to lay out three priorities: sharper commercial targeting for neffy, tighter financial discipline, and a pipeline push into chronic spontaneous urticaria. The quarter itself showed a company still early in proving its epinephrine nasal spray can win over prescribers who default to needle-based injectors out of habit.
The headline number is market share. Neffy's total US share reached 5% in the second quarter, double the 2.5% mark from a year earlier. Inside the field sales team's targeted call universe, share jumped further, to 8% from 4%. That targeted approach is showing up in the prescriber data too, with more than 16,000 unique neffy prescribers in the quarter, over three times the year-ago total. Casale pointed to a stark gap between covered and uncovered territory: where the sales team is active, neffy holds 8% share versus roughly 1% where it isn't.
To lead that push, ARS brought on Meg Smith as Chief Commercial Officer, a 25-year veteran Casale worked with at Dynavax. The field organization is now fully built out and pointed at the highest-value prescribers, who represent 44% of the total market opportunity. Beyond neffy, ARS is extending its intranasal epinephrine platform into CSU, a market with no FDA-approved on-demand treatment for acute flares today, a gap the company believes its existing commercial infrastructure is positioned to fill.
The flip side of that story is cost. Second quarter total revenue was $33.7 million, with $26.2 million of that coming from US net product sales, against total operating expenses of $95.1 million, including $12.8 million in cost of goods sold. SG&A alone ran approximately $77.6 million for the quarter, a level Casale acknowledged reflected an earlier strategy built around broad consumer advertising that didn't convert well in what he described as a prevention-based market rather than a treatment market.
The company is now guiding to combined SG&A and R&D expenses of $114 million to $126 million for the back half of 2026, with cash-based spending in that category expected to fall to $100 million to $110 million, a cut of more than 40% in cash SG&A from the first half of the year. That reduced spending pace is expected to hold through 2027. On the pipeline side, the CSU phase II-B interim readout, previously expected by the end of 2026, has slipped to the first quarter of 2027, a delay the company attributed to the trial's design requiring patients to log three separate flare episodes before data can be collected.

On August 13, Cellebrite (NASDAQ:CLBT) named a new chief executive and trimmed its full-year outlook on the same morning. Shiven Ramji stepped in as CEO effective that day, replacing Tom Hogan, while the company lowered its 2026 revenue and ARR targets after several large government deals slipped past the quarter. Management highlighted positive growth drivers during the call, including its first major FedRAMP contract for Guardian and early customer adoption for its newly launched AI platform, Genesis.
Underneath the disappointment, the underlying numbers still point up. Annual recurring revenue grew 21% year over year to $508 million, and revenue reached $131 million, up 16%, with subscription revenue making up 91% of that total. Gross margin was 86%, and adjusted EBITDA reached $31.8 million (a 24% margin). Cellebrite also raised its full-year adjusted EBITDA target to $153 million to $159 million.
Growth is also getting broader. Defense and intelligence ARR jumped 25%, and U.S. federal government growth accelerated into the mid-teens after sitting flat at the end of 2025. Asia Pacific was the standout region, growing 29%. The newer products are starting to matter too. Cellebrite closed its first major FedRAMP deal for Guardian with a long-standing US federal customer, an initial seven-figure order that was nearly 35 times the average annual spend of roughly $50,000 by a typical state or local agency. Genesis, a consumption-based AI product that launched June 10, 2026, pulled in about $400,000 in ARR within its first weeks and had already landed more than half a dozen customers by the end of the quarter, with trials expanding into the UK, Australia and Europe.
The reasons for the guidance cut are just as concrete. A handful of large transactions that management expected to close in the second quarter instead slipped beyond it, partly because of new administrative and procurement requirements tied to Cellebrite's foreign entity status with US federal and European government customers. At the same time, the shift toward the company's Insights product is not generating as much extra pricing and footprint expansion as expected, especially among US state and local government customers, where growth slowed to just below 20% from the mid-20% range a year earlier. Without newer product offerings such as Advanced Unlocks and Guardian Investigate, management said state and local government growth would have been in the mid-teens.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Reed Baker-Whiting and Andy Nájar scored stoppage-time goals, Hany Mukhtar added a goal and an **** ist, and Nashville SC beat the Columbus Crew 3-2 on Saturday night for their third consecutive win.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Right-hander Casey Mize of the San Diego Padres left Saturday night's game against the Minnesota Twins with a sprained right ankle with two outs in the third inning.
Mize, acquired from Detroit on Aug. 3, allowed three solo home runs in the first two innings. He apparently slipped going down the steps into the dugout after the top of the second.
Mize was checked by a trainer and manager Craig Stammen after throwing his warmup pitches in the third and stayed in the game. He got two outs and allowed a double by Ryan Jeffers before being lifted for Kyle Hart.
Mize allowed a leadoff homer to Luke Keaschall and then consecutive homers by Brooks Lee and rookie Kaelen Culpepper with two outs in the second.
The Padres entered the night holding the National League's third wild-card spot.

ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) picked a good week to hand over the keys. On August 6, the company said that CEO Ryan Lance will retire after 14 years, with CFO Andy O'Brien stepping in on September 1, right when ConocoPhillips had its best quarterly results since 2022. Adjusted profit came in at $3.24 a share, well ahead of the $2.88 Wall Street expected, and revenue jumped 32.4% to $19.5 billion.
ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) pulled off that strong quarter even as production slipped nearly 6% to 2.25 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, leaning instead on a 36% jump in realized prices to carry the results. O'Brien, a nearly 30-year company veteran, inherits a $7 billion free cash flow growth pledge through 2029 that depends heavily on finishing the pricey Willow oil project in Alaska. It is a project whose price tag has already climbed to $9 billion.
One of the company's rivals, Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) told a different story the week before. On July 31, the firm posted its biggest quarterly profit in four years at $14.7 billion, up 67% from the first quarter. It still came up short of the $3.60-per-share estimate with adjusted earnings of $3.52. Its shares fell 1% on the news.
So why did ConocoPhillips's win move the stock while Exxon's four-year-high profit left investors cold?

Taylor Swift has officially picked up a new **** le inside the Kelce family, and Kylie Kelce slipped it naturally into a conversation about an increasingly difficult debate at home.
During the Aug. 20 episode of Not Gonna Lie, Kylie was discussing her continued campaign to convince husband Jason Kelce that their family needs a cat when she explained why their daughters keep asking for one. "I grew up in a cat-dog house, like both at all times, and now our kids have influences in their life, Aunt Taylor is a big one where they get to be around cats," she said, according to PEOPLE.
The remark marked the first time Kylie had publicly referred to Swift as "Aunt Taylor" since the singer married Travis Kelce in July. Jason and Kylie's daughters: Wyatt, 6, Elliotte, 5, Bennett, 3, and Finnley 16 months, have spent time around Swift's three cats, giving their mother some unexpected help in the family's long-running pet debate.
That feline influence actually predates the marriage. During Swift's 2025 appearance on New Heights, she revealed that she had already introduced the girls to Meredith Grey, Olivia Benson and Benjamin **** on while attempting to undo one particularly creative warning Jason had given his daughters about cats.
Kylie's cat campaign came up during her conversation with actress Leslie Mann on the Aug. 20 episode of Not Gonna Lie. Kylie explained that growing up with both dogs and cats made having both kinds of pets feel normal to her, while her daughters are now getting their own exposure to cats elsewhere, particularly through Swift.

A Turkish content creator and former volleyball player, Ceyda Yakova, has tragically passed away in a motorcycle crash near the road in Şile, outside of Istanbul. She was 22.
According to Univision, Ceyda Yakova was alone when she lost control of her motorcycle and crashed into a roadside traffic sign. As a result, she suffered severe injuries and was rushed to a hospital, where she passed away shortly after.
Eyewitnesses said she lost control when her rear wheel slipped during a high-speed turn. It was later revealed that Yakova had parked her motorcycle on the roadside for a short rest before the crash.
The family said they saw footage of the accident. Ceyda's father, Cem Yakova, said it was a relatively gentle bend rather than a steep one, and the motorcycle was moving around 100 kilometers per hour when the wheel hit gravel, causing it to veer suddenly as his daughter collided with the pole. His wife, Melek Yakova, said she did not consider her daughter guilty.
Yakova was buried in the Ayazağa cemetery, close to the Barbaros Hayrettin Paşa mosque, on August 18.

Kylie Jenner is expanding KHY into footwear with a brand-new collaboration alongside Gia Borghini. To debut the same, the beauty mogul slipped into a leather micro minidress that perfectly complemented the sleek heels. The campaign put both the shoes and Jenner's minimalist styling in the spotlight, offering fans a first look at the highly anticipated drop.
For the campaign, Kylie Jenner wore a strapless black leather micro minidress that hugged her figure from top to bottom, elevating it with heels from her new KHY x Gia Borghini collection. The body-skimming silhouette featured a straight, strapless neckline that showcased her décolletage.
Meanwhile, the ultra-short hemline kept the look modern. The daring cut made the entire outfit undeniably sultry. The smooth leather finish added texture without distracting from the footwear, making the dress the perfect backdrop for the new collection.
Jenner paired the outfit with pieces from the KHY x Gia Borghini collaboration. She wore sleek metallic sandals and minimalist kitten heels. The reality TV star also stepped out in the statement Muse wedge in both silver and black leather. Sitting on the floor with pairs scattered around her, she gave each design its own moment while showcasing their clean, contemporary aesthetic.
Rather than piling on accessories, Jenner kept the styling intentionally understated. She wore slim rectangular wire-frame glasses that added a polished, fashion-editor feel to the campaign. Her long black hair was styled pin straight with a center part, creating a sharp contrast against the fitted leather dress.

Australia responded to their nine-wicket defeat in the first Test at Darwin by bowling Bangladesh out for 64 on the opening day of the second and final Test in Mackay on Saturday.

After winning the toss, Australia captain Pat **** mins chose to field and Mitchell Starc made an impact with the first ball. He dismissed Shadman Islam for a duck, registering his ninth first-over wicket in Test cricket and moving past England's James Anderson, who had eight such dismissals.

Starc then continued his spell, taking five wickets inside the first seven overs as Bangladesh slumped to 12/5. It was the sixth-fastest five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

. Starc took five wickets in the first 45 minutes as the visitors slipped to 12/5 before reaching lunch at 35/6.

Cummins added three wickets for 25 runs as Bangladesh slipped further to 39/9. The visitors, however, managed to avoid their lowest-ever Test total. Their lowest score remains 43 against West Indies in 2018.

Bangladesh were eventually bowled out for 64, with Starc finishing with 6/12 from 10 overs.

The spell also took Starc past South African great Dale Steyn's 439 Test wickets. With 441 wickets, Starc is now the 10th-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket. He has taken 19 five-wicket hauls and three 10-wicket match hauls, with best figures of 7/58.

For Bangladesh, the collapse came after Australia had been beaten by nine wickets in Darwin in the opening Test. The second Test therefore began with Australia in control and Bangladesh under pressure with the bat.

BOSTON - Even when they lose, which they do a lot, the San Francisco Giants are never short of story lines and interesting twists.
Slugger Rafael Devers got a mixed reaction in his return to Fenway Park - lots of boos when he was announced and during his first at-bat, but many cheers during a between-innings video tribute. Then Devers hit a blast to dead center in the fourth, cutting Boston's lead to one, and the boos got the edge. Devers went back-to-back with Drew Gilbert, not a slugger type, who slipped a two-run shot down the right-field line.
That wasn't quite enough in an eventual 6-4 loss to the onrushing Red Sox. Logan Webb, so sharp this month, with an ERA under 1.00 and 17 strikeouts to just two walks, succumbed to the same issues that have plagued many of the team's younger starters. He walked three and hit two, leading to three Boston runs. He also gave up a 116 mph laser of a three-run homer by Willson Contreras (the answer at first base for the Red Sox when Devers wasn't).
Giants infielder Christian Koss, traded a little more quietly than Devers was when he went from Boston to San Francisco for cash at the end of spring training in 2024, singled, doubled and scored twice against the club that gave up on him when he still had an option remaining. Nick Sogard, who led off for the Red Sox and scored two runs Friday, was among those who'd moved ahead of Koss on Boston's Triple-A depth chart.
Webb's third inning, his second time through the order, was all the rougher because the floodgates opened with one on - Sogard, who had walked - and two outs. After a Wilyer Abreu single, Contreras hit his 450-foot bomb, and two singles, two hit by pitches and a walk added two more to the damage. By that point Webb had thrown 35 pitches in the inning, and he left with the bases loaded. Lefty Reiver Sanmartin got Sogard to hit into a fielder's choice to end the inning.

On August 13, Stratasys (NASDAQ:SSYS) held its second-quarter earnings call, and the headline number was consumables revenue hitting a record $66.3 million. For a company trying to prove it has moved beyond selling prototyping machines into recurring, production-grade manufacturing, that record matters more than the top line itself. But underneath the record sat a cash flow warning that investors will want to weigh carefully.
Aerospace and defense is Stratasys's largest business, and it grew 17% year over year in the second quarter. Management pointed to expanding adoption across the U.S. Air Force, where the company's F900 system is certified for flightworthy production parts, describing the orders as increasing in volume across the Air Force's sustainment enterprise rather than one-time purchases. Once a part is qualified on a Stratasys platform, switching suppliers becomes costly, which is the basis for calling this demand structural. Stratasys Direct, the company's parts manufacturing arm, grew 12.1% year over year, fueled by defense technology customers building drones and munitions.
The quarter also delivered two large multiyear systems deals. Quickparts expanded its relationship with Stratasys by purchasing 12 Neo 800-plus systems on top of six units it already owned, with three of the new systems placed in Europe. FAW Group, one of China's largest auto manufacturers, signed for 12 F900 systems by year-end, with two shipped in the second quarter, adding to five F900s and eight other Stratasys machines it already runs to make interior parts like armrests and panels. Stratasys was also awarded a two-year, $7.8 million program through the 2026 America Makes OIB Modernization Challenge to develop monitoring technology for its F900 and F3300 platforms. Layered on top is the pending $42.5 million cash acquisition of MarkForged, whose continuous carbon fiber technology generated about $70 million in revenue in 2025 and which management expects to add positively to EBITDA within a year of closing.
System revenue fell to $26.4 million from $30.6 million a year earlier, meaning machine sales are shrinking even as the recurring materials business grows. Gross margin slipped too, with non-GAAP gross margin at 47.2% versus 47.7% a year ago, which the company attributed largely to a stronger Israeli shekel raising costs incurred in that currency. GAAP net loss widened slightly to $16.9 million, compared to $16.7 million a year ago, though GAAP loss per diluted share improved slightly to $0.19 from $0.20.

Aug 21 (Reuters) - The dollar slipped on Friday, trading near a three-month low against the euro, as concerns mounted that the U.S. Treasury's plan to expand buybacks of longer-dated government ‌debt could weigh further on the U.S. currency.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Thursday he may increase the government's ‌repurchases of Treasuries even further, a day after the department surprised markets by pledging to at least double the size of its buybacks of longer-dated debt in an effort to rein in bond yields.
Long-dated yields jumped this week, with the 30-year yield reaching its highest level since 2007. Traders cited concerns over the deteriorating fiscal outlook, heavy issuance, geopolitical risk stemming from the war with Iran, and uncertainty over the Federal Reserve's policy path.
Analysts say that holding yields down will simply shift the burden of fiscal concerns onto the currency. ‌And so far the strategy hasn't achieved its primary goal, as yields have crept back higher.

Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway, which is now run by Greg Abel, revealed in its latest 13F filing that the fund bought a new stake in D.R. Horton (NYSE:DHI), worth about $580,000. The fund also increased its stake in fellow homebuilder Lennar (NYSE:LEN) by 30% in the second quarter, lifting that position to about $1.2 billion.
The housing market has been taking a hit amid higher mortgage rates, but some long-term indicators suggest a rebound could come. J.P. Morgan Global Research expects home prices to remain flat in 2026 but sees a 3% rise in 2027. Capital Economics forecasts a 2.5% rebound in home prices in 2027, followed by a 4% gain in 2028. The Mortgage Bankers ******* ociation expects single-family construction starts to recover to 967,000 in 2027 and 976,000 in 2028, after dipping in 2026.
DHI is one of the largest homebuilders in the country. In the most recent quarter, gross margin actually beat guidance at 20.7% even as prices slipped amid declining construction costs. The stock is down 10% over the past year. Bulls point out that a broader housing recovery is expected sooner or later and DHI is a strong play to benefit from it in the long term.
Bears say a recovery would take a lot of time. The company recently cut its full-year revenue guidance and Q4 guidance calls for a sequential slowdown in both revenue and homes closed. Elevated mortgage rates, sticky inflation, and cautious buyers are forcing DHI to lean on incentives and lower average prices to keep volume moving and these pressures are not expected to ease soo.
Forward non-GAAP P/E sits at 13.95x, about 13% below the sector median of 15.99x, but 40% above DHI's own five-year average of 9.99x. On a GAAP basis, forward P/E of 13.96x is below the sector median by roughly 19%, yet sits 40% above the stock's five-year norm.

A five-year correlation this low is not a statistical curiosity; it is what an earnings stream built on barrels and product margins looks like beside the index.
ExxonMobil (XOM) has gained 4.3% over the last five trading days while the S&P 500 slipped 0.5%, and a stock rising while the tape sags is the kind that gets chased. But the question that decides your outcome is different: how much of this return is its own story rather than the index you already own, and what owning it does to your swings. On five years of evidence, most of that return is not the index.
Most Of What Moves This Stock Is Not What Moves The Index
Over the past five years ExxonMobil's correlation to the S&P 500 has been 0.26, on a scale where 1.0 would mean lockstep. Gold, the ***** et investors hold precisely because it does its own thing, correlates to this stock at 0.1 over the same five years. The index reading is higher, and still describes a stock that has largely moved independently of the broad market. That independence has not cost return, though it has cost calm: the stock annualized 30.2% over that window against 13.2% for the index, at 26.7% volatility versus 17.2%.
Barrels And Product Margins Are What Set This Return Stream
