Editor's note: As mentioned in the match report yesterday, in a departure from our usual structure I've elaborated on some talking points based on observations I made at the ground as well as a match report; as such, I've done some deeper ******* ysis rather than the high-level talking points we might typically cover.
A fascinating encounter last night in Sydney saw Tottenham Hotspur come out the victors in their latest preseason hit-out against Sydney FC. With Roberto De Zerbi naming a stronger side than the one he selected against Auckland FC, Spurs started on the front foot and looked much the better side, without being able to convert that dominance into goals, with an excellent Mathys Tel free kick Spurs' lone goal. Following Sydney FC equalizing in the second half, the match went to penalties where Spurs held their nerve to win the shootout 2-4, with Joe Lacey hitting the post and Martin Dubravka saving Alexandar Popovic's attempt.
Here's a deep dive into a few things I took away from Spurs' latest preseason fixture.
In preseason, it's always hard to determine tactically what exactly is due to managerial instructions, the opposition, the players on the pitch, or a combination of all three. What was clear though was that Spurs were very much operating in an asymmetrical nature in a variation to their typical 4-2-3-1.
The midfield was clearly set up as a two, with Conor Gallagher in front of Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray as a #10 ; however, Gallagher often was dropping back to link play and Bergvall routinely pushed forward, as well as at times moving out into wide areas while Solomon at times tucked in. This at times left Gray as the sole holding role.

Victoria Montano reportedly described a frightening experience at a Sydney cinema after an alleged confrontation. The Real Housewives of Sydney star claimed a man threatened to fight her and her husband. The incident reportedly happened while the couple watched a movie in Newtown.
Montano reportedly took to Instagram Stories to explain what happened during the movie outing. She claimed she looked at her phone during the advertisements when the confrontation began. "Someone threatened to fight with us," she said while describing the encounter.
According to Nine, the reality star then joked about her ability to defend herself during the alleged confrontation. "Lucky I've got a good fly kick because Tim didn't want to fight," Montano said. She also claimed the man eventually left the cinema because he was "scared" of her.
Montano later filmed her husband, Timothy Odillo Maher, walking through Newtown toward their car. She asked him whether he had been worried about potentially having to fight. "I was worried I was going to have to step in," he reportedly replied.
Montano continued joking about the incident while speaking to her followers. She demonstrated her supposed "fly kick" for the camera during the Instagram Stories update. However, the alleged encounter reportedly left her uncomfortable enough to change her plans.

Teenage forward Luca Williams-Barnett stole the show in Tottenham's 4-2 penalty shootout win over Sydney FC in a sign of how the club have changed.
The 17-year-old, who started the second half on the left but moved into his favoured attacking midfield position, opted for the first penalty and nonchalantly chipped a panenka down the middle.
It preceded a shootout in which Sydney FC duo Joe Lacey and Alexander Popovic hit the post and had a penalty saved by goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, with Sandro Tonali, debutant Andrew Robertson and Dane Scarlett all scoring to secure victory after a 1-1 draw.
Williams-Barnett stole the show to such an extent that his manager Roberto De Zerbi was describing him as a "precious diamond" after the match.
He added: "We have to work on him in the final third and he must work hard on his physicality. I've worked with a lot of young players in my time and he's a potentially special player."

Roberto De Zerbi has told Lucas Bergvall he must show the "right spirit" if he wants to stay at Tottenham amid speculation linking the midfielder with a move away from the club.
The uncertainty comes after Bergvall made his first pre-season start in Spurs' 1-1 draw with Sydney FC on Wednesday.
The 20-year-old endured a challenging 2025-26 campaign, making only 17 starts and frequently playing out of his preferred position. This summer has seen further competition arrive in the centre of midfield with the big-money signings of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.
It is understood that bids from Nottingham Forest and Newcastle for Bergvall this month have been rejected. However, the midfielder could still depart Tottenham before the transfer window closes, driven by his desire for regular first-team football in the upcoming season.

The French forward opened the scoring in the 29th minute, curling a superb effort into the top-right corner from 25 yards to cap an impressive opening-half display. Sydney hit back after the interval through Takahiro Sekine, but Martin Dúbravka's save in the shootout proved decisive before Dane Scarlett converted the winning penalty to seal a 4-2 victory.
Tel's display came amid continued links between Tottenham and Manchester City winger Savinho. Having completed his permanent £30 million move from Bayern Munich earlier this summer, the 20-year-old continued his encouraging start to life as a Spurs player with another eye-catching performance on the left flank.
Roberto De Zerbi rotated his squad throughout the contest, handing Lucas Bergvall his first pre-season minutes after the midfielder returned to action amid uncertainty over his future. The Swede started in midfield before making way at half-time for club-record signing Sandro Tonali, who made his latest pre-season appearance.
Andy Robertson also featured for the first time in Tottenham colours after coming on during the second half. The Scotland captain was handed the armband for his 25-minute cameo, created two chances, forced a save with a low effort and calmly converted his penalty in the shootout.

Chelsea has been busy this summer. The Stamford Bridge club has broken its transfer record to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa with Marco Palestra also joining from Atalanta and Geovany Quenda coming in from Sporting CP. Chelsea has clearly altered its strategy ahead of the 2026/27 season.
This is reflected by the Blues' interest in Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck, both of whom are reportedly close to joining the Stamford Bridge outfit. Henderson is 36 while Welbeck is 35. That Chelsea is even interested in such experienced players says a lot about how the strategy has changed over the summer.

Greece have called up the brother of Australia batter Sam Konstas to their national cricket team as they prepare to make a surprise bid to qualify for the 2028 men's T20 World Cup.
It is understood Billy Konstas, four years older than Sam at 24, has been included in Greece's 14-man squad for a European qualifying event in Finland from 14 to 21 August.
Sam made his Test debut for Australia at the age of 19 against India in the Boxing Day Test in 2024, memorably ramping Jasprit ***** rah three times in one over.
Billy plays grade cricket in Sydney alongside his day job where he combines cricket coaching with physiotherapy.
The elder Konstas is joined in the squad by another Greek-Aussie in 21-year-old leg-spinning all-rounder Blake Faunce, who played representative age-group cricket for Australian Capital Territory.

The Blues took the lead through Dastan Satpaev, who looked impressive, but the Australian side battled back into the game.
More Chelsea goals from Jamie Gittens, Dario Essugo, and a hat-trick from Joao Pedro ensured the West London outfit secured the victory.
The Chelsea attacking unit and the midfielders were impressive, although Tosin Adarabioyo and Josh Acheampong did not cover themselves in glory at the back.

An Australian athlete passed a murder scene while on a Commonwealth Games training run in Glasgow.
Olli ***** witnessed the aftermath of a fatal knife attack, which happened in Burgher Street, in the east end of the city, about 15:00 on Friday.
Police Scotland said Paul McMinigal, 44, was discovered in a close and ***** ounced dead at the scene.
The Sydney Morning Herald has reported that Australian athletes have since been asked to train in small groups and not to run in nation's distinctive green and yellow team uniform.
However BBC Scotland News has been told this advice is standard protocol at championships and not a Glasgow-specific request.

Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso has answered on his side's transfer plans after winning their first match of pre-season.
The Blues kicked off their pre-season tour in Australia with a 6-4 victory over Sydney Warriors. However, much attention remains on the transfer market, where the club continues to be active.
Veteran Englishmen Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson have both been linked with moves to Stamford Bridge in the past 24 hours. Alonso answered on the speculation.
"I'm sure that from today until the last day of the transfer window there will be a lot of rumours," said the Spanish coach. "So to be commenting on all of them, it's going to be a hard task.
"But for sure we need proper balance in terms of qualities, in terms of positions, in terms of balance. We want to have a complete squad and we want to make a good team.

Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso believes Morgan Rogers has all the qualities needed to make an immediate impact after completing his club-record move from Aston Villa.
The England international joined the Blues in a deal worth £117 million last week but has not travelled on the club's pre-season tour of Australia and South-East Asia after featuring at the World Cup. Rogers is instead expected to report for training at Cobham on 9 August, leaving him just under two weeks to prepare for Chelsea's Premier League opener against Fulham.
Speaking to reporters in Sydney ahead of Tuesday's friendly against Western Sydney Wanderers, Alonso said Chelsea targeted Rogers because of his ability to settle quickly and raise the team's level.
"For sure, it's a great signing," Alonso said. "In that position we needed an important player and I'm sure there were not many better options than Morgan Rogers."
"You need players who can have that almost instant impact and I am sure Morgan won't need much time to adapt to the club, to the system, to his team-mates. That was the idea that we wanted, to get a top player and Morgan is one of them."

Every start of preseason we make it clear that these games are nothing more than fitness preparation for the squad. However when you give playing time for several young players like we did today, you have to keep your eyes peeled for what may come next.
One of those young'uns, Dastan Satpayev, had some eyes set on him and showed why that was the case. A good run from Ryan Kavuma-McQueen's pass to break the offside trap from the hosts at Accor Stadium in Sydney and the Kazakh international scored not even 10 minutes into the match.
While offensively the Blues were very promising, the combination of Tosin Adarabioyo and 18-year-old centre-back Olutayo Subuloye in defence didn't make it for solid defending. In spite of Teddy Sharman-Lowe's best efforts to organise his teammates in a corner kick, he couldn't do much to avoid giving Western Sydney Wanderers the tying goal.
It didn't help that midfielders Reggie Watson and Dário Essugo weren't in the kind of rhythm needed to control action in their sector. The hosts were thus able to attack at whim with little to no counterpart offered by Chelsea, who had instead to keep defending against a barrage of shots from the Wanderers.
Unsurprisingly the hosts got in front via Aydan Hammond, with defence once again not covering themselves in glory. What was surprising, was Chelseaying at 2-2 with Dário Essugo ***** isted by Reggie Walsh on a Satpayev play and pass from the left flank.

Socceroos World Cup star Cristian Volpato has allegedly tested positive for cocaine after police twice stopped him for speeding in Sydney on the same night.
The 22-year-old Australia midfielder was stopped in a BMW Coupe on the Anzac Bridge at 11:05pm local time on Thursday night after he was caught travelling between 86-94km/h in a 60km/h zone, police said.
He was subjected to a roadside breath test, which returned a negative result.
However, Volpato allegedly returned a positive result for cocaine when he was stopped two hours later for travelling at 109km/h in the same 60km/h zone.
New South Wales state police said Volpato was issued an infringement notice for excess speed, while his international driver's licence was suspended for six months - which means he cannot drive in New South Wales.

Notre Dame head football coach Marcus Freeman had plenty of praise for one of his new hires to the staff.
In a recent interview with On3 (subscription required), Freeman was very vocal about the instant impact that Aaron Henry has made since he was brought onto campus at South Bend as the new defensive backs coach. He called Henry's presence "infectious" and pointed towards the easy fit he has had alongside defensive coordinator Chris Ash.
Aaron Henry was the defensive coordinator at the University of Illinois but even then he fit the type of profile that Freeman looked for in a coach: High-energy, a great recruiter and someone who was proven on the defensive side of the football.
At Illinois, he built his reputation as one of the best developers of defensive backs in the country. Players like Devon Witherspoon, Kerby Joseph, Quan Martin, and Sydney Brown can all be credited at least in part with being developed by Henry. It seems like it is just a matter of time before Witherspoon will sign a new contract with the Seattle Seahawks and become the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history. He started as a defensive backs coach at Illinois before eventually being promoted to defensive coordinator when Ryan Walters was hired as the head coach at Purdue.
Henry did not decide to come to Notre Dame blindly. He has a long-established relationship with Chris Ash. He previously played for Ash at Wisconsin and then coached under him at Rutgers. The familiarity with Ash prompted Henry to say the Notre Dame opportunity was a "natural fit."

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium club are expected to sell the Italian, but he was dropped from Roberto De Zerbi’s squad due to a knock. Spurs confirmed on their website that Vicario sustained a minor knock in training and will undergo treatment at their training centre. Summer signing Martin Dubravka, Brandon Austin and Antonin Kinsky are the goalkeeping options available to De Zerbi on tour.
Tottenham are also without Mohamed Kudus, Xavi Simons, Dejan Kulusevski and Wilson Odobert. The quartet have stayed behind at Hotspur Way to continue their rehabilitation following knocks from last term. Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Matar Sarr, Pedro Porro, Marcos Senesi, Cristian Romero and Djed Spence remain on extended break due to their participation at the just-concluded World Cup. SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — An Australian court has cleared Rebel Wilson of defaming the star of her directorial debut, "The Deb," in social media posts.
Charlotte MacInnes alleged Wilson defamed her or breached her confidence in four social media posts from September 2024 to July 2025 by falsely suggesting she had withdrawn a ****** ual harassment complaint against one of the film's producers to advance her career.
MacInnes denied ever making such a complaint but Justice Elizabeth Raper of the Federal Court of Australia ruled Wednesday that none of Wilson's posts were defamatory.
The dispute stemmed from an incident in September 2023 when MacInnes and the producer went swimming at Sydney's Bondi Beach before later sharing a bath at the apartment where they were staying. Wilson later said on Instagram that MacInnes told her the next day that the producer had asked her to bathe and shower with her, making her feel uncomfortable, but that MacInnes later retracted the complaint.
Raper ruled that MacInnes failed to prove Wilson's posts caused serious harm to her reputation or that Wilson breached her confidence. She dismissed the case and ordered MacInnes to pay costs, according to a written judgement provided by the court.

NEW YORK (AP) — Sabrina Ionescu scored nine of her 29 points in the final minute, Jonquel Jones made the tiebreaking free throw with 3.4 seconds left and the New York Liberty rallied to beat the Chicago Sky 95-94 on Wednesday night.
The Liberty erased a 12-point deficit in the final five minutes. They trailed 91-85 with less than a minute to play, before Ionescu hit a contested 3-pointer from the corner falling out of bounds, made another 3-pointer and then converted a three-point play with 15.1 seconds left to tie the game at 94.
Courtney Vandersloot fed Kamilla Cardoso on a pick-and-roll but Cardoso missed the layup and fouled Jones, who made one of the free throws.
Breanna Stewart had 20 points and nine rebounds for the Liberty (15-12). Jones added 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Rebecca Allen scored 12 points. Ionescu was 8 of 11 from the field with five 3-pointers and 8 of 8 from the foul line.

Sydney Sweeney is yet again the face of American Eagle.
The Euphoria actress, 28, took to Instagram to reveal her starring role in the denim company's "low-rise season" campaign. In a series of images, she appeared modeling the brand's new, dropped waistline jeans in a variety of styles including wide-leg, boot-cut and baggy.
She finished the looks with classic tops lik tees, tank tops and a cropped jean jacket.
"Denim on denim is always in," she wrote on her Instagram Story.
Last summer, the actress and apparel company caused a frenzy when they released the Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans campaign.
