Even bullish S&P 500 investors are waiting for a market correction. But it's already here for nearly two-thirds of stocks.
Roughly 300 stocks in the S&P 500 — including Trade Desk (TTD), Costar (CSGP) and Fiserv (FISV) — are down 10% or more from their 52-week highs, says data from S&P Global Market Intelligence and MarketSurge. That puts them in a correction — or worse.
Such widespread pain in the S&P 500 signals that a dreaded sell-off is already happening in slow motion. Many investors are unnerved that the S&P 500 is trading at its highest valuation since the dot-com bubble burst in 2021, based on the Shiller/CAPE PE. The measure stands at 42, close to its December 1999 peak of 44, says Nicholas Colas of DataTrek Research. Roughly a third of S&P 500 stocks are down 20% or more from their highs — putting them in bear market territory.
"Bubbles burst when real world outcomes fall short of expectations, not just in terms of corporate fundamentals but monetary and fiscal policy as well," Colas said.
Much of the concern centers on AI plays. And, to be sure, shares of AI king Nvidia (NVDA) are down more than 10% from their 52-week highs. But even more pain is being felt in other areas of tech.

PARIS, Aug 21 (Reuters) - French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will co-chair a meeting of the so-called Coalition of the Willing group of pro-Ukrainian countries on Monday.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy will be at the meeting in Kyiv, which will be attended both in person and remotely, Macron's office said on Friday, without specifying who will be there in person. The Ukrainian capital has come under heavy bombardment recently, and Zelenskiy has pleaded with his allies to do more to help his country.
European Council President Antonio Costa will attend the meeting in person and NATO Deputy Secretary General Radmila Shekerinska will participate remotely, NATO and the EU said in separate statements.
"The leaders will reiterate their determination to strengthen their support for Ukraine so that it can defend itself against Russian aggression," Macron's office said in a statement.

Chelsea are set to renew striker Joao Pedro's contract until 2034 before the start of the Premier League season.
Sources at Stamford Bridge say they expect the deal to go through - while those close to the 24-year-old say a full agreement has already been reached on a contract to run until 2032, with an option for the club to extend it by a further two years.
Internally, the Brazil international is regarded as a major success after joining from Brighton in a deal worth an initial £55m, plus £5m in add-ons, last summer.

BOSTON — Third baseman Nolan Arenado was out of the Arizona Diamondbacks' lineup for a second consecutive day as he deals with a left intercostal injury, but manager Torey Lovullo said the tentative plan was for Arenado to return to action in the series finale on Wednesday, Aug. 19, as the designated hitter.
"He's getting very close," Lovullo said. "We want him to continue to get a little more work with the trainers."

O.J. Brigance, a former Baltimore Ravens linebacker and their longtime senior adviser to player development, has died, the team announced Monday evening.
Brigance battled ALS for the past 19 years. He was 56.
"For 22 years, we've been blessed to have O.J. as a teammate, friend and brother. It's a sad day, but also a celebration of all the gifts that O.J. bestowed upon our team and our city and the entire NFL community." Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta said in a statement. "O.J. inspired us with humility, faithfulness, determination, competitiveness and love for humankind.

Hayden Panettiere's costars and collaborators are taking to social media to pay tributes to the actress following her death at age 36. Representatives for the two-time Golden Globe nominated star of such TV series and films as Heroes, Remember the ******* ans, and Nashville confirmed that the actress passed away on Sunday. No cause of death has been revealed.

The NFL insider will serve as a sideline reporter for the streamer's future football games, as well as a co-host for The Ringer's NFL Show podcast.
His first game with Netflix will be the Rams vs. 49ers on Sept. 10 in Melbourne, Australia, alongside Noah Eagle, Luke Kuechly and MJ Acosta-Ruiz. Pelissero is also set to cover games on Thanksgiving Eve, a doubleheader on Christmas Gameday and a Week 18 matchup to end the regular season.

Cagliari forward Yael Trepy is in intensive care at the Santissima Annunziata hospital in Sassari, on the island of Sardinia, the Serie A club said in a statement on Monday.
"The club remains in constant contact with the medical staff and with the player's family, and is closely monitoring the development of his condition," the statement read.
According to media reports, Trepy suffered an accident in a swimming pool of a villa on the Costa Smeralda over the weekend.
The ANSA news agency said that the player can't swim and drifted into the deeper part of the pool. He was reportedly pulled from the water and taken to the hospital by helicopter.
Cagliari didn't provide any details regarding Trepy's exact state of health or the circumstances of the accident.
