The U.S. national debt has hit $40 trillion, and the Trump administration is facing questions about its budget plans as a result. The good news is, there has one: The American economy will apparently grow its way out of any fiscal crisis.
"It's been a problem for 35 years," Trump told reporters Friday. "And what we have now … is we have tremendous growth. And the way you take care of debt is with growth, and we have tremendous growth. We've never had growth like we have right now."
"There's nothing magic about the $40 trillion number," Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on CNBC last week, "And we can grow our way out of that."
Economists would be inclined to agree with Bessent: The value of the debt, while an extraordinary milestone, doesn't hold much relative weight. What economists (and more importantly, the bond market) is watching is the debt-to-GDP ratio: This demonstrates the level of borrowing by a country against its economic capacity to repay and service it.
Currently, the U.S. ratio stands at 122%. To bring it back into a lower balance, an economy could cut its borrowing or—as Bessent suggests—increase its growth.
When the alternative is cutting borrowing and, as a result, government spending, the growth plan is a more optimistic and politically palatable route.
It's also the latest in a series of solutions proposed by the White House: Originally, President Trump had suggested that tariffs would pay down the national debt (the plan was quickly nixed by a Supreme Court ruling ordering the administration to repay approximately $100 billion in revenues that the justices deemed illegal).

Oil has been one of the stranger stories in markets this year. Crude topped $114 a barrel in April when the Iran conflict was at its worst, then retreated sharply once diplomacy moved in.
It has been climbing again since early July, up roughly 30% from that trough. Brent is now between $91 and $93 a barrel and has gained 13% in the past two weeks alone.
That is the backdrop for what Morgan Stanley's chief equity strategist said on Aug. 24. It is worth reading before it gets buried under the next data release.
Michael Wilson, Morgan Stanley's chief U.S. equity strategist, said a renewed oil spike is the single biggest near-term threat to American equities, Bloomberg reported.
His note was blunt. "Crude is the near-term risk, and it's asymmetric," Wilson wrote. Stocks get hurt more by a crude spike than they benefit from a crude dip. That is not a new observation. He first laid it out in a March 2026 note. It lands differently now that oil has been moving the way it has.

At least one in four NFL players could develop chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a progressive brain disease linked to repeated head impacts, new research suggests.
Researchers found CTE in 215 of 878 former NFL players who died between 2016 and 2021, meaning 24.5 percent have died with CTE. The study was led by Dr. Daniel Daneshvar, a physician and researcher at Mass General Brigham and Harvard Medical School, along with researchers from Boston University and other institutions.
That figure may underestimate how common CTE is among former NFL players. Researchers examined the brains of 235 of the 878 players who died during the study period, leaving 643 brains unexamined.
CTE is caused by repeated head impacts and can only be definitively diagnosed after death. It is extremely rare without repeated head trauma. The disease can cause memory loss, confusion, mood changes, impaired decision-making, impulsive behavior and addiction, according to the American Brain Foundation.
CTE was first identified in boxers nearly a century ago and has since been found in other athletes exposed to repeated head impacts, including hockey, rugby, soccer, wrestling and bobsledding. Researchers have also found evidence suggesting military personnel exposed to repeated blasts may be at risk.

Wyndham Clark has had an incredible bounce-back season in 2026.
He was in poor form in 2025, with just two top-fives and six missed cuts on the PGA Tour. Clark was also embroiled in controversy after damaging the locker room at Oakmont and throwing his club at the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow.
Clark's on-course form has seen a massive turnaround. He's in contention to win the PGA Tour Player of the Year award after winning three times, including a US Open win at Shinnecock and a win at the BMW Championship.

KYIV, Aug 25 (Reuters) - Ukraine sees a window of opportunity for U.S. mediation to end Russia's war in Ukraine until the end of next summer and has drafted one page of ideas with U.S. and European officials to be presented to Moscow, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said.
Zelenskiy said that a ceasefire and a previously discussed U.S. proposal for a free economic zone in Ukraine's eastern Donbas area — to be administered by a third party — were among the ideas in the document.
"It contains one of the ideas for a ceasefire — that is the main point. The second part concerns what the Americans proposed regarding a free economic zone," Zelenskiy told reporters in a weekend briefing.
Zelenskiy said that he saw a window to end the nearly four-and-a-half years of fighting that stretched from the G20 summit in the U.S. in December this year until the end of summer 2027, given the looming campaign for the 2028 presidential election in the U.S.

Zelenskiy said that a ceasefire and a previously discussed U.S. proposal for a free economic zone in Ukraine's eastern Donbas area — to be administered by a third party — were among the ideas in the document.
"It contains one of the ideas for a ceasefire — that is the main point. The second part concerns what the Americans proposed regarding a free economic zone," Zelenskiy told reporters in a weekend briefing.
Zelenskiy said that he saw a window to end the nearly four-and-a-half years of fighting that stretched from the G20 summit in the U.S. in December this year until the end of summer 2027, given the looming campaign for the 2028 presidential election in the U.S.
