Notre Dame football won its 2026 season opener on Sunday night, as the Irish used a huge second half to beat the Wisconsin Badgers in Lambeau Field, 41-13.
There was some bad news during the contest, as star safety Brauntae Johnson was seen walking off the field and into the locker room on his own power, then coming back onto the field in the second half wearing a walking boot. The hope was that the injury would not be a significant one, and that is looking like it will be the case.
Mike Berardino of the South Bend Tribune is reporting that Johnson's injury is minor, and is on his left foot. He goes on to say that he could miss more than a few weeks while recovering, but it is not believed to be a season-ending issue.
In another note that Berardino had, he mentioned that defensive tackle Jayson Onye's injury status has still not been determined, as he was also seen wearing a walking boot in the second half. Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman will speak shortly on these two players, and we'll soon get confirmation on their injury status.

In his second media interview in three days, Dana Brown, who was dismissed as Houston Astros general manager Aug. 24, stood up for Jeff Bagwell, Jim Crane and Joe Espada.
Speaking with A.J. Pierzynski, Erik Kratz and Scott Braun on Tuesday's episode of "Foul Territory," Brown made it clear he had no hard feelings about the people trying to keep the Astros in first place in the American League West, especially Bagwell, the senior advisor for the franchise, who works closely with Crane, the team's owner, on baseball decisions.
"Jeff Bagwell's a good baseball man," Brown said in the 16-minute interview. "I have no problems with Jeff Bagwell. I love talking with Jeff. We have some great conversations."
Bagwell, a Hall of Famer for the 15 years he manned first base for the Astros, has become a bit of a divisive figure among fans concerned about his influence in front-office decisions. After general manager James Click was let go shortly after the team won the 2022 World Series, Bagwell and Crane orchestrated many of the moves that offseason, including signing first baseman José Abreu and reuniting with reliever Rafael Montero and outfielder Michael Brantley. We'll get into what this all means for Cleveland shortly, but I can't quite grasp how fascinating this is from a Nuggets perspective. Typically, restricted free agents don't hold much leverage over their incumbent teams when it comes to negotiations (see Jalen Duren, Bennedict Mathurin, Tari Eason, the list goes on). But how and why Watson's situation played out differently is worth mentioning. The whispers of the 23-year-old's unhappiness with how Denver valued him, believing he should have been on par with teammate Christan Braun (earning $25 million annually) grew louder as the offseason dragged on, as well as the list of suitors eagerly waiting in the wings for an opportunity to capitalize. This, in conjunction with the Nuggets' limits on their financial flexibility and desire to generate some breathing room — thanks in large part to oddly matching a $12 million offer sheet for Spencer Jones and a realization of their own ceiling — created an environment in which Watson could land in a desired spot.
