There may not be moral victories in college football, but there is progress.
Monmouth football went on the road against the momentary darling of the sport and a Mid-American Conference powerhouse. The final score will look predictable on paper. The Hawks lost 49-14 to Western Michigan on Saturday night in Kalamazoo. It was the first game after the Broncos' controversial loss to Michigan had galvanized college football fans across the country in support, and WMU head coach Lance Taylor had foreshadowed the team's response after that painful finish.
"Hey, don't feel sorry for us," Taylor told reporters after the Michigan game. "Feel sorry for the teams that we're going to play."
But don't feel sorry for Monmouth, either. Overall, the Hawks (1-2) put together their best performance of the season as they went toe-to-toe with the Broncos (1-1) in the first half in particular. A much smaller percentage of Monmouth's plays were fatal self-inflicted wounds, and it was enough to obfuscate the team's considerable progress in the third game of the season.
"We did some things well. We moved the ball well, we got stops, but it's putting it all together," Monmouth head coach Jeff Gallo said. "That's a good team, but we're out here trying to compete to win and we can play better. We'll keep pushing to play better."

The scoring drive the offense put together toward the end of the second quarter finally gave that side of the ball some momentum after a largely disappointing start to the game. But the momentum that could have given the Jayhawks didn't carry over into the second half, with turnovers ending their first two third-quarter drives. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Isaiah Marshall struggled with consistency, failing to instill much confidence in his potential this fall in his second start of the season as he went on to finish the game with three turnovers.

Seve Ballesteros was must-see TV in his golfing prime.
Whether it was the magic he continually brought to the course, or the controversy that tended to follow him off the course, you simply could not take your eyes away from the Spaniard.
The five-time major winner was once suspended for a year from the PGA Tour and had numerous feuds with the golf hierarchy during his career. And Ballesteros was even disqualified from the Irish Open in 2002 after what he did during his opening round.

A proposal to move the Chicago White Sox from Rate Field in Bridgeport to a new riverfront stadium in the South Loop is drawing mixed reactions from fans and elected officials as the team considers the concept as a potential future ballpark site.
Developer Canal Edge recently unveiled renderings for "The Railyards," a proposed mixed-use development near Roosevelt Road and Canal Street that would include a possible new home for the White Sox, along with residential, commercial and retail components and an outpatient care center for Northwestern Medicine.
The proposal remains in its early stages.
Fans attending a game at Rate Field expressed differing views on the possibility of relocating the team.

ELLISTOWN – It had been exactly one month since Walnut lost a volleyball match. East Union still hasn't.
No. 1-ranked East Union beat No. 2 Walnut 3-1 Tuesday in a battle of Class 2A ******* le contenders. The Urchins are now 20-0.
"I don't think about it. I don't," East Union coach Josh Blythe said. "Next game, practice, scout next team. How can we go play?"
Dating back to last season, East Union has lost only twice since Aug. 26 of 2025. Both of those losses came against Walnut, the last one in the third round of the Class 2A playoffs.
Walnut went on to win the 2A state championship. Tuesday was a little revenge, but the ultimate goal for East Union is to do what Walnut did a year ago.

Let's face it, by the time the third preseason game rolls around, most of the battles have been fought, debates have taken place, and roster decisions have been made. With final rosters due on August 30, teams have no time to waste whittling down from 90 to 53.
The Dallas Cowboys are certainly no exception. Unlike most teams coming off losing seasons, Dallas has most of the roster spots written in stone. Very few spots are up for grabs, so for those operating on the periphery, margins are razor thin and mistakes cannot be afforded.
It's these handful of players who stood out in all the wrong ways in the Cowboys' 27-24 loss to the New Orleans Saints on Friday night. While Jaishawn Barham, Camden Brown and Joe Milton III all performed admirably, far too many others wilted under the pressure.
Cowboys Nation almost universally joined the Trigg bandwagon from the jump. An above-the-rim tight end from Baylor was Dallas' prized rookie undrafted free agent this year. With so much potential to work with, character concerns and blocking deficiencies could be overlooked, provided he dazzled with ball skills.
Sadly, Trigg did not dazzle. While he showed a willingness to block, he wasn't particularly good at it on Friday against the Saints. To make matters worse, Trigg struggled to catch the ball making his place on the Cowboys final 53 a longshot.

Her Instagram account is filled with photos where she is fashionably dressed in beautiful settings, or lounging in a bikini in relaxing ones. Life looks great.

If you had to envisage how a 92-minute documentary about one of world sport's most successful stars begins, these snippets would not follow the status quo. Yet 24-time major winner Djokovic doesn't do status quo: he is an athlete, an enigma, known as much for his greatness on court as his nonconformity off it. Think Melbourne tree-hugging; think magic potions; think no Covid vaccine.
For Djokovic's The Wolf in Winter fly-on-the-wall movie released last week, as "Prime Video Sports Presents" and "A Film By Jason Hehir" entrance frames are enveloped by clips of Djokovic literally howling into the distance, it all feels rather appropriate. Much like Rafael Nadal's Netflix series earlier this year, it is a genuinely insightful and engaging look at one of tennis' all-time greats. If you haven't watched it yet, consider this a gentle nudge of encouragement.
The timing is conspicuous, too, ahead of the final Grand Slam of the season in New York, starting on Sunday. The US Open marks three years since Djokovic's last major triumph, in a 2023 campaign where he won three of the big four and only missed out on a historic calendar Grand Slam in a final-set defeat to Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon.
At that point, a record-breaking 25th singles Grand Slam – which would put him ahead of Margaret Court at the top of the all-time standings, male or female – seemed a simple inevitability. Yet now, this is Djokovic's 12th Grand Slam chasing that elusive No 25. But it might just be his best shot.

Head coach Brian Barry-Murphy is hoping Cardiff City will be "very" busy in the final week of the transfer window.
The Bluebirds are keen to add players to their squad after a number of injuries to all of their recognised senior central defenders.
Barry-Murphy had hoped to complete a signing before their Carabao Cup defeat by Norwich City but remains optimistic they will be able to bring in reinforcements before the deadline on Tuesday, 1 September.
"I gave an honest answer when I said I thought somebody would be in for this game," he said.

The Chicago Cubs are trying to track down the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Central and could be getting Justin Steele back at some point.
Steele underwent elbow surgery in 2025 and a flexor strain this year has kept him on the shelf. However, he is determined to return this year. He "absolutely" expects to return this year, per The Athletic's Patrick Mooney. However, Craig Counsell knows he's far from being ready.
"We need to get him pitching in games first," Counsell said, per Mooney. "We're not going to skip steps. He rightfully should be (focused on returning this season), but we have a lot of steps to go before we get there.
"He hasn't pitched in an affiliated game in almost two years, so let's get him pitching in an affiliated game. We can understand that he's going to have to pitch in multiple games before he's ready."

As the Pittsburgh Steelers wrap up their training camp installation, veteran quarterback Mason Rudolph voiced strong enthusiasm for the team's new offensive system. LeBron James is no longer a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, but he made his mark on the franchise during his eight years with it. He consistently played at a high level during that time, even if certain aspects of his game had clearly slipped, and he delivered an NBA championship in 2020.
As we take a look at James' greatest performances as a member of the Lakers in chronological order, we go back to his highest-scoring game with L.A., which took place on March 5, 2022.
The 2021-22 season was initially supposed to be a return to glory for a Lakers team that won the 2020 NBA championship, only to succumb to injuries and lose in the first round of the playoffs the following season. Los Angeles had traded for Russell Westbrook, apparently at James' behest, but he never fit in, and by midseason, it became clear that this experiment wasn't going to work.
It seemed like whatever could go wrong did go wrong that season. The team could never string together any momentum or stay above .500, and by the time the All-Star break had passed, there seemed to be a feeling that it was merely playing out the string.

The 50/50 Raffle allowed Dodgers fans to enter for a good cause: half of the money raised goes to one winner, and the other half goes to charity through the Dodgers Foundation.

Eight LSU football players landed on the preseason Coaches' All-SEC team. That's the third-most total, after Georgia and Texas with 11 apiece, then Oklahoma with 10. The Tigers tied with the Longhorns for the most first-team selections with five each.
Tight end Trey'Dez Green, offensive tackle Jordan Seaton, defensive lineman Princewill Umanmielen, linebacker Whit Weeks and punter Grant Chadwick landed on the first team. Cornerback DJ Pickett is on the second team while safety Ty Benefield and center Braelin Moore are on the third team.
A mix of veterans from the 2025 roster and the transfer portal, along with young stars, characterizes this year's LSU team. Its All-SEC selections reflect that as well. Weeks and Moore fought through injuries with the Tigers last year, both returning to lead the purple and gold in its first year under head coach Lane Kiffin.
Umanmielen played under Kiffin at Ole Miss last year, ending the year as a third-team All-SEC selection. Chadwick also earned a spot on the All-SEC third team last year as LSU's punter. Benefield and Seaton came to Baton Rouge as two of the top players out of the transfer portal.

Quantrill (5-4) struck out five and did not issue a walk.
Foscue hit a 400-foot home run over the left field wall in the second inning to give Texas a 2-0 lead.
Wyatt Langford scored the first run of the game on Jake Burger's double-play groundout in the first.

MACKAY, Australia (AP) — Australia's has dropped Jake Weatherald and recalled Matt Renshaw in a bid to stabilize the top order and try to level the two-match series after a shocking loss to Bangladesh in the first cricket test on the weekend.
Australia announced a 13-man squad on Tuesday, with only the one change for the second test in Mackay, in northern Queensland state, starting Saturday.
Weatherald was out for 23 in the first innings and didn't score in the second innings of Australia's nine-wicket defeat in Darwin, and averaged 20.36 in his 12 test innings. Marnus Labuschagne, who scored 1 and 31, was retained in the squad despite concern over his form.
The 30-year-old Renshaw is a contender to open the innings for Australia with Travis Head in his latest comeback to the test lineup.
Renshaw made his debut in 2016 and played 11 tests before being dropped in 2018. He was recalled in 2023 for three tests but has only played in the shorter formats for Australia since then. He averages 29.31 with one century in 14 tests, but has only played one of his last 10 tests on Australian soil.

Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert is among the three newest advisors to the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority, officials announced Aug. 14.
As a member of HISA's Horsemen's Advisory Group, Baffert is expected provide feedback on the Racetrack Safety, and Anti-Doping and Medication Control programs, which cover rules and regulations in horse racing. The others named to the 18-member advisory group Aug. 14 are trainers Jena Antonucci and Tim Keefe.
"We are also pleased to welcome our new members to the Advisory Group and look forward to the perspectives they will bring as we continue working collaboratively with stakeholders to enhance the sport for horses and participants alike," HISA CEO Lisa Lazarus said in a statement.
Baffert, Antonucci and Keefe succeed outgoing advisory group members Kelsey Danner, Gavin Murphy and Jonathan Sadler.
Baffert, 73, has trained six Kentucky Derby and two Triple Crown winners in a more than 40-year career. In 2021, Baffert received a two-year suspension from Churchill Downs after Medina Spirit, who had finished first in that year's Kentucky Derby, was found to have failed a postrace drug test. The suspension was later extended one year amid a lawsuit from Baffert, who had claimed Churchill was targeting him and trying to destroy his career.

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) — New Zealand passed its last examination before the eagerly awaited test series against world champion South Africa when the Bulls were dispatched 50-19 at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.
The All Blacks dominated to lead 24-0 at halftime and perhaps their first match at altitude contributed to a closer, more back and forth second half.
They still racked up eight tries, with doubles for wingers Josh Moorby and Leroy Carter and captain Codie Taylor, while conceding their first points in more than two hours across the tour matches against the Stormers, Sharks and Bulls.
Only a few of the New Zealand side were expected to line up in the first test next Saturday in Johannesburg, but valuable experience was gained by the wider squad whose depth will be plumbed during the grueling run of four tests on four straight weekends.

NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees pitcher Carlos Rodón is scheduled to make his second minor league rehabilitation start Thursday night for Double-A Somerset.
Rodón has been on the 15-day injured list since July 3 because of left elbow inflammation. He received multiple shots, including platelet-rich plasma injections, and threw 29 of 48 pitches for strikes last Saturday in his first rehab outing for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The left-hander allowed three runs and three hits over 2 2/3 innings against Rochester, with four strikeouts and two walks.
New York manager Aaron Boone has said Rodón could return to the team in a piggyback situation with another starter at first, similar to Max Fried's return from a bruised left elbow on July 22.
When he gets back, Rodón will rejoin a strong Yankees rotation that also includes Cam Schlittler, Gerrit Cole, Will Warren and Ryan Weathers.

Clay Holmes' Cubs debut nearly didn't happen.
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the New York Mets and Arizona Diamondbacks were on the verge of making a trade that would've sent Holmes to Phoenix before the Aug. 3 trade deadline.
"Holmes was on his way to the Arizona Diamondbacks until the Mets flagged the medical reports of one of (the Diamondbacks') prospects, and pivoted to the Cubs," Nightengale reported Sunday, Aug. 9.
