Iliman Ndiaye has explained why he turned down Tottenham to join Manchester City by saying his determination to play Champions League football counted against Spurs.
The Senegalese winger completed a £60m move from Everton to City on deadline day but only after Tottenham were the first to bid for him.
Spurs were discussing a £60m move for Ndiaye – with Richarlison returning to Everton for £35m in a separate deal – but as soon as City showed an interest, the former Sheffield United player decided not to join a club that finished 17th in each of the last two seasons.
"For me it was always going to be City," he said. "I wanted Champions League and playing at one of the best teams in the world. I'm not saying Tottenham is not, but when Manchester City comes through, you don't say no.
"This is where I think I belong. I've worked hard to get to this point. When I was speaking with my wife, I was telling her if I had to leave Everton it would be somewhere where I know I would be playing Champions League."

Manchester City have won 1-0 today against stubborn Coventry City side at the Etihad Stadium this afternoon. A Erling Haaland header in the 26th minute was just enough for City make it three wins from three matches to start the new Premier League season.
When the starting lineups were announced, Enzo Maresca had made only one change to the starting lineup which dispatched Crystal Palace 4-1 last weekend. Iliman Ndiaye replaced Phil Foden in the starting lineup as the Senegalese international made his Premier League debut from the start today. Enzo Fernandez was on the bench for today's game. However, that changed 15 minutes before kickoff. Nico O'Reilly suffered an injury in the warm up and Enzo Fernandez replaced him in Manchester City's starting lineup.
Manchester City began the game dominating possession, however it was Coventry City who should have taken the lead inside the opening eight minutes. Awoniyi surged clean through on goal with only the keeper to beat. But he fired his shot wide of the post with Gianluigi Donnarumma rushing out to save his team's blushes. Taiwo Awoniyi's chance was a clear warning shot to Enzo Maresca's side that today's match wouldn't be a walk in the park.
Manchester City's first shot on target would arrive in the 16th minute. Elliot Anderson was fouled in midfield and he quickly took the free kick and set free Rayan Cherki. Cherki surged into ****** e and played in Erling Haaland with a quality through ball. Haaland fired in a powerful low drive from inside the Coventry penalty area across goal which Coventry City keeper Carl Rushworth got down well to save.

Another day, another suitor for Iliman Ndiaye. In today's version, it's Tottenham Hotspur who have reached an agreement in principle with Everton for the Senegal international for a fee of about £60 million.
In his comments yesterday after Spurs sunk to their second consecutive league defeat to start the season, Roberto De Zerbi indicated that Richarlison had asked to leave the club 'many times', and now that will be allowed with a move to the Toffees accepted for about £35 million.
There had been a hue and cry when Everton had been forced to sell Richarlison quickly to Spurs a few years ago for £60m to balance the books at the end of the financial year, when his performances saving Everton from relegation demanded more. Now it looks like the Toffees are selling another forward in his prime for lower than his market value, and to add insult to injury, are overpaying for the Brazilian to return too given how his career has tailed off with injuries and the like.
As of this afternoon the Toffees appear to still be working on a loan for Jack Grealish, close to making a move for right back Kenny Tete from Fulham, and also have an interest in USMNT striker Folarin Balogun. Beto appears to be headed to Fiorentina and Adam Aznou on loan to Malaga.

According to The Athletic's David Ornstein, overnight Tottenham Hotspur and Everton reached an agreement to essentially swap attackers — bringing Ilman Ndiaye to Spurs, with Richarlison returning to Everton heading the other direction. This is NOT a true swap deal; these will be treated as separate transfers.
In yesterday's post-match press conference, Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi essentially told us that Richarlison asked to leave Spurs for a new challenge. I just didn't realize it would all go down so quickly. According to Paul Joyce of The Times, Ndiaye will cost Spurs about £60m, with Richarlison heading the other direction for a fee of £35m, making the outlay a lot lower than most transfers that Spurs have brought in this summer.
Ndiaye, 26, is a French fooballer who has declared for and plays international football for Senegal. He's been used primarily on the left wing for Everton, but can also play centrally or on the right. He's NOT a striker but could be implemented as a #10 if needed. Ndiaye likes to be on the ball and frequently prefers to take on and dribble past his defenders, which frequently turns into touches in the penalty area and shots. He likes to cut inside from the flank and is also comfortable receiving the ball deeper as a ball progression outlet. His acquisition means that Spurs will essentially only have three first team strikers on the books — Omar Marmoush, Dominic Solanke, and Dane Scarlett — but Ndiaye will fortify Spurs' attacking midfield options. His preferred position at Everton will put him in competition with Mathys Tel and Savinho, but his positional flexibility means he could be an ***** et elsewhere as well. He's also a willing presser and capable of putting in defensive work to make tackles. Despite maybe hinting otherwise yesterday, I'm kind of a fan of this deal.
As for Richarlison… well, I'm sad. He's probably my favorite Spurs player (non-Sonny edition) of this era. He's a vibes guy who always seemed to lift the mood, and it's clear he loved Spurs. But it's just as clear that he's not happy here anymore, and as his career starts to wind down a return to the club that lifted him to stardom feels like the closing of the circle. Everton fans love him as much as we do, and I can't begrudge them, or him, this move. It feels like the right choice.

PSG winger Ibrahim Mbaye (18) has eventually agreed to join Aston Villa, after the two clubs had thrashed out a €55m deal for the transfer of the Senegal international, according to RMC Sport. The player is expected to fly out to Birmingham this Saturday to undergo a medical and complete final formalities to sign for Unai Emery's UEFA Europa League winners. Pape Matar Sarr hasn't been seen in a Tottenham shirt since preseason and there are plenty of rumors that both he and the club are looking for an exit from N17. Previous rumors suggested that Sarr had preferred a move to Monaco, which as a French speaking Senegalese dude makes a ton of sense and would be a good move for him. Tavolieri writes that the Monaco interest is real, but unlikely to happen before the last week of the season and is contingent on Monaco offloading American striker Folarin Balogun first. But staying in the Premier League would have its advantages as well.
The whole kerfluffle over Morgan Gibbs-White last summer seemingly hasn't dimmed Tottenham's relationship with Forest THAT much if they're still considering a a deal. A loan plus an option isn't the best outcome for Tottenham, but it beats keeping Sarr around if he's not going to play that much, which feels like the case. Honestly, Forest wouldn't be a terrible club for Sarr to land at — he's likely going to get more playing time there and Oliver Glasner is a pretty good coach with good midfield ideas. No guarantee that Forest's mobster-boss owner Evangelos Marinakis wouldn't sack Glasner in a fit of rage after three consecutive losses, either.

Liverpool are still pursuing Ismaila Sarr, despite seeing an initial offer of around £50m rejected by Crystal Palace.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola wants to bring in three more players before the end of the transfer window, including two who can operate in wide positions. One of those will be France winger Bradley Barcola, after PSG accepted an offer of £100m plus £20m in potential add-ons for the 23-year-old.
And while Liverpool have moved on from Yankuba Minteh following Brighton's resistance, The Independent understands the club are not yet discouraged from a deal to bring in Sarr.
The 28-year-old Senegal international is comfortable playing on the right wing, a crucial area of the field for Liverpool to strengthen following the summer exit of Mohamed Salah.

Gakpo has been the subject of interest from Tottenham, and The Independent understands Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi is insistent that the club pursue the Dutchman, despite a summer outlay already in excess of £300m.
