Andoni Iraola admits Liverpool need to sign more wingers as they get used to life without Egypt star Mohamed Salah.
Iraola will take charge of his first Premier League game as Liverpool manager at Newcastle on Sunday after arriving from Bournemouth to replace the sacked Arne Slot in the close-season.
The trip to St James' Park also marks the start of Liverpool's first season without Salah since 2016-17.
Salah joined Turkish club Trabzonspor earlier in August, bringing down the curtain on the forward's iconic Anfield career, which featured 257 goals and multiple trophies including Premier League and Champions League ******* les.
With Hugo Ekitike injured and doubts over Cody Gakpo's Liverpool future, Iraola has limited options to support Alexander Isak in attack.

A fresh report from a top-tier source has subtly indicated that Tottenham Hotspur might have moved on from their rumoured interest in Cody Gakpo.
The Liverpool winger has reportedly been a primary target for Spurs throughout the summer, with some sources claiming that the Dutchman would be open to joining Roberto De Zerbi's side and swiftly reuniting with Andy Robertson.
There have been conflicting reports in recent days as to whether or not the north London club have abandoned their pursuit of the 27-year-old, but it now seems as though they might have switched their attention to two other attacking targets.
The widely respected David Ornstein has reported for The Athletic that Spurs are now working on a potential double raid on Manchester City to sign Savinho and Omar Marmoush.
Nothing has yet been finalised regarding the two players, but the Londoners' talks with Enzo Maresca's side are 'advancing', and a deal for the Brazilian winger – who was omitted from his club's Community Shield squad last weekend – is said to be 'progressing'.

Liverpool could yet see two notable departures before the window shuts, with Caught Offside reporting that Curtis Jones is wanted by Inter Milan and Cody Gakpo is moving closer to Tottenham Hotspur. For Andoni Iraola, this is quickly becoming a key part of his summer rebuild.
Jones has entered the final year of his deal, and that fact naturally sharpens the discussion. According to the report, Inter have made him "a priority target" and "believe a deal can be reached for around €35 million." Liverpool are said to have wanted nearer €40m, but the wider context matters. If there is no extension, the club risk losing leverage as the season progresses.
The report adds that Jones is open to Italy, while his recent absences have fuelled talk around his future. It is understood, however, that those omissions were linked to "a hip problem and fitness management rather than simply protecting him for a transfer." That distinction is important, because it suggests a football decision has not yet fully been made.
Gakpo's situation feels more advanced. It is claimed that he has "reached an agreement in principle with Tottenham", with Liverpool seeking "more than £60m" and sources valuing him at around £70m. Unlike Jones, Liverpool are under no pressure on contract. Gakpo is tied down until 2030, which means any deal would need to suit the club's terms.

Rumors linking Bayern Munich center-back Kim Min-jae to Manchester United might be legitimate as the Red Devils appear to really like the big South Korean. However, that does not mean that Bayern Munich or Kim would actually want to make the move:
✅ It is TRUE: There is some truth to reports around Manchester United's interest in Min-jae Kim. As I've mentioned with Bayern Insider previously, the South Korean international is on the list at United. They're always looking at his situation at Bayern Munich. That said, Min-jae Kim is very clear at the moment that he wants to stay at Bayern and he's fine with his current role at the club. He's not in the starting XI at the moment, but he has a chance to get there if he's playing well and, of course, if injuries strike. So, Kim wants to see if he can push back into the team. It's not like he's so disappointed that he wants to force a move, and this is a very good situation for Bayern Munich, as they're fully aware they can't rely on just two senior centre-backs for an entire season. Having a player like Kim available is critical if they want to go far in all competitions – especially in the Champions League.
Remember, succeeding in Europe is a big target for Bayern Munich. Vincent Kompany made it clear that Bayern want to do better than they did last term. The target is winning the competition. I can't remember this aim ever being so clearly formalised by the head coach as Kompany did. So, you see, they need a really good squad and they need high-quality options like Min-jae Kim. So, whatever way you look at it, it's a good thing that he's staying.
Kim is settled in with his No. 3 role in Bavaria and Bayern Munich seems to want to keep him around, so it feels like Manchester United's desire to bring in the center-back will not amount to anything.
Things seem to be closer and closer for Liverpool attacker Cody Gakpo to make a move to Tottenham Hotspur:

Jeremy Jacquet scored on his Liverpool debut as Andoni Iraola's Reds ended their pre-season campaign with a 2-0 win over Serie A side Como at Anfield on Sunday.
After agreeing a reported £60 million ($81 million) transfer for Jacquet in January, the 21-year-old Frenchman's move was confirmed on July 1.
But a niggling knee injury had kept him on the sidelines until the visit of Cesc Fabregas's Como.
The centre-back impressed in the early stages with with some well-timed challenges and rounded off a fine first appearance for Liverpool with a tap-in from Cody Gakpo's cross that gave the Merseysiders a 2-0 lead in the 44th minute.
France Under-21 international Jacquet was replaced by another debutant, Ronald Araujo, at half-time, with Gapko having given Liverpool the lead in the 23rd minute after good work from Jeremie Frimpong.

Como lose the second match of the day at Anfield. The first behind-closed-doors game between the Reds and the Lariani had ended 0-0, but in the evening clash it was Liverpool who came out on top 2-0 thanks to goals from Gakpo(24') and new signing Jacquet(44').
Fabregas' side, just as had happened against **** nal, looked far from out of place despite the defeat, and the coach can be satisfied, also with the upcoming international commitments in next season's Champions League in mind.
Now, for both teams, the focus shifts to the league. Como will begin on Saturday, August 22 with an afternoon clash against Udinese, while Iraola's Liverpool will open their Premier League campaign on Sunday the 23rd in a blockbuster match against Newcastle.
In the second half, Liverpool controlled the game and until the 84th minute there were no major chances for either side. But it was right at the end that the match came alive again, first through Diao and then Gravenberch.
The Como player was picked out after a fine counterattack by new signing Cuoto! The Senegalese forward tried a curling right-footed shot from the edge of the box, but it went just wide! A few minutes later, Liverpool had the chance to make it 3-0 through Gravenberch: the Dutchman confidently went for a placed finish, but the ball crashed against the crossbar and went out.

Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo is increasingly open to joining Tottenham Hotspur, with fresh information suggesting direct talks have already taken place between the Netherlands international and Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi.
Dutch journalist Rik Elfrink has provided the latest update on Gakpo's situation, reporting that the 27-year-old held discussions with De Zerbi last month and came away receptive to the possibility of moving to north London.
Liverpool's willingness to consider a sale also appears to have increased, potentially opening the door to further negotiations between the Premier League clubs.
Tottenham's interest in Gakpo has developed significantly during recent weeks.
Previous reporting from Voetbal International journalist Joost Blaauwhof indicated that Spurs had formally registered their interest in the Liverpool attacker, with De Zerbi viewing Gakpo and Savinho as players capable of fulfilling different functions within his attacking system.

In a recent segment on Youtube, respected journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that Liverpool are in talks to land Paris Saint-Germain youngster Ibrahim Mbaye. Romano said,
"Ibrahim Mbaye. Liverpool spoke with the agent of the player, Jorge Mendes, for several days.
"But my information is that [Liverpool] believe that signing Barcola and Mbaye means spending almost €200m (£171m). So that would be a crazy package to spend on two players.
"My understanding is that Liverpool's plan is to sign two wingers by the end of the window, especially if Cody Gakpo goes to Tottenham.

According to one transfer insider, Liverpool have no plans to sell Cody Gakpo this month and would have no intention of changing that stance unless two things were to happen.
Tottenham Hotspur have been continually linked with a move for the Dutch forward this summer, although the Daily Mail's Simon Jones recently claimed that Anfield chiefs are adamant they don't want to sell the 27-year-old.
That standpoint has been corroborated by another journalist in Pete O'Rourke, who hinted that the only things which could change the Reds' mind is if they were to bring in another one or two forwards in this window and if Spurs submit an enormous bid for our number 18.
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast for Football Insider, he said: "As things stand right now, Liverpool do not plan on selling Cody Gakpo despite Tottenham's interest.
"A lot will depend on what Liverpool do on the incomings during the rest of the transfer window if more signings are to arrive, because [Andoni] Iraola does not want to weaken his squad.

Liverpool's summer has the feel of a queue that will not quite move. You can see the shape of what the club want to do, you can understand the logic behind it, and you can also sense the frustration rising because the clock keeps ticking while key pieces remain out of reach.
According to The Athletic, Liverpool have made their first significant defensive move by completing a loan deal for Ronald Araujo from Barcelona. At the same time, talks over Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola continue to drag, with a sizeable valuation gap still in the way. Add in uncertainty over Curtis Jones and interest in Cody Gakpo, and it is clear this remains a squad in transition under Andoni Iraola.
There is no panic required yet. There is, however, a growing need for clarity.
Photo: liverpoolfc.com
The most concrete development is at the back. The Athletic reports that "Liverpool have completed a deal to bring in Ronald Araujo on loan for the season in the first move of the summer to tighten up the defence." That line matters because it sums up precisely where the club were vulnerable.

Tottenham are moving like a club that have stopped thinking small. According to TeamTalk, Spurs have held conversations over a possible summer move for Endrick, and while plenty still has to happen before this becomes concrete, the logic is obvious.
Roberto De Zerbi has already overseen an aggressive window. Tottenham have added Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Martin Dubravka, Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, while smashing their transfer record twice. That tells you two things. First, the club are backing the new head coach properly. Second, they are not done.
De Zerbi has made it clear the squad build is incomplete, particularly in attack. Savinho is reportedly the priority out wide, Cody Gakpo remains on the radar and Pedro Neto is viewed as an alternative. Endrick, though, is a different discussion. He is not a standard market opportunity, he is one of those rare cases where elite potential becomes temporarily available because a super-club have too many moving parts at once.
Photo IMAGO
The key detail is the structure. Real Madrid are only prepared to authorise another straight loan. That usually puts some clubs off. Tottenham, apparently, are open to it, even without a buy option. Sensible enough. If you are convinced a player can shift the level of your forward line immediately, the absence of a long-term guarantee does not automatically kill the deal.

Liverpool is back at Anfield on Sunday for the first time this preseason, hosting Monaco in a friendly two weeks out from the start of the Premier League season.
Andoni Iraola's American tour started well but ended badly. The Reds beat Sunderland 4-2 in Nashville and Wrexham 1-0 at Yankee Stadium before Leeds hammered them 4-2 in Chicago.
Liverpool finished fifth last season, and Iraola leaned hard on young players in the States. Alisson, Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo are all back in training and in line for minutes.

Monaco has a new manager too. Filipe Luís took over in July on a two-year deal, his first job in Europe after winning the Copa Libertadores with Flamengo.

Liverpool will have Alexis Mac Allister back in training on Monday. That is the headline, and for Andoni Iraola it matters. Pre-season has been fragmented, the squad has been split by summer commitments, and any new coach wants bodies on the grass, quickly, consistently and without drama.
Mac Allister has been the final absentee after a long 2025/26 campaign that stretched into the World Cup with Argentina. He played a major role in that run, starting almost every game as Argentina reached the final before losing to Spain after extra time. By the time that ended, Liverpool were already deep into pre-season work.
Iraola confirmed the timetable clearly, saying: "We now have virtually our entire squad together, which of course will be very important in the coming days and weeks.
"Victor Munoz, our new signing, joined us at AXA this week having been part of the Spain squad which won the FIFA World Cup last month, as did Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo and Alisson Becker.
"Alexis Mac Allister, the last of our World Cup players, will link up with us on Monday, also."

Tottenham are keen on a move for Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo as Roberto de Zerbi continues reshaping his squad.
Any deal would be far from straightforward. Liverpool are reluctant to weaken their attacking options, particularly after Mohamed Salah's departure and with Hugo Ekitike still recovering from an Achilles injury.
The Reds are themselves pursuing Paris St-Germain winger Bradley Barcola but, even if he arrived, Liverpool would be losing one of their most experienced attackers.
So why are Spurs interested?
On the surface, Gakpo looks like another left winger. In reality, he offers considerably more tactical flexibility.

Tottenham Hotspur have joined the race to sign Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson, rivalling Premier League counterparts Aston Villa, according to the Daily Mail. Xabi Alonso, Unai Emery and Roberto De Zerbi are at Stamford Bridge, Villa Park and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, respectively.
Stamford Bridge executives have placed a £65m price tag on the 25-year-old forward, who spent last season on loan at Bayern Munich.
Spurs have prioritised strengthening their attack in the closing weeks of the summer window, having already reinforced other areas. The North Londoners have now turned to Jackson despite their interest in Cody Gakpo, who is currently not for sale by Liverpool.
Spurs will face stiff competition from Aston Villa, where manager Unai Emery is leading efforts to reunite with Jackson. Emery previously coached the striker at Villarreal and values his direct running, pressing energy, and versatility as ideal qualities to strengthen Villa's forward rotation alongside Ollie Watkins. Villa have already held preliminary talks with Jackson's representatives following Morgan Rogers' departure.
From Chelsea's perspective, the Blues are open to sanctioning a deal if their £65m threshold is met. Jackson scored 11 goals in 34 matches across all competitions last season, but returns to Stamford Bridge facing intense competition for places following the arrivals of Danny Welbeck and Emegha, adding to a striker group that already includes Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, and Marc Guiu. With Chelsea aiming to streamline their squad and generate transfer capital, a permanent departure remains a strong possibility.

Liverpool face another important decision in the final weeks of the transfer window, with Cody Gakpo's future becoming a talking point after interest from Tottenham Hotspur.
The Dutch forward remains highly valued at Anfield, but reports of Spurs making contact have raised questions over whether Liverpool could consider a major offer for a player who has been an important part of the squad since arriving from PSV Eindhoven.
Speaking on Anfield Index's Media Matters podcast, David Lynch joined Dave Davis to discuss the situation, explaining that Liverpool are not actively looking to sell Gakpo but would consider their position if Tottenham were to make a significant financial offer.
Liverpool's current position appears to be that Gakpo is not available, with Lynch explaining that the club are not looking to push the forward towards the exit door.
However, the journalist suggested that almost every player has a price, especially when clubs receive offers that force them to reassess their plans.

Tottenham are interested in signing Cody Gakpo, with Sky Sports reporting the Liverpool forward is among the club's attacking targets this summer.
New Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi is keen to add at least one wide forward after strengthening his midfield and defence, but Liverpool are reluctant to sell the Netherlands international unless they first secure a replacement.
They also report Liverpool are expected to make a formal move for Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola, although the France international would command a huge fee, with PSG valuing the 23-year-old at around £145million.
Gakpo, who has four years remaining on his Liverpool contract, is regarded as one of the more experienced attackers in Andoni Iraola's squad and can also provide cover through the middle while Hugo Ekitike continues his recovery from an Achilles injury.
Spurs are also keen on signing Manchester City winger Savinho.

Liverpool and Leeds meet at Soldier Field in Chicago in a rematch of last season's entertaining two Premier League matches. A wild 3-3 draw in December was settled only by a Leeds stoppage-time equalizer from Ao Tanaka and a tighter 0-0 stalemate the following January.
The clash also marks an early test for Andoni Iraola's first year in charge of Liverpool, who bring a squad blending experience and youth on their U.S. tour, headlined by Dominik Szoboszlai, Federico Chiesa and Cody Gakpo.
Leeds, now in Daniel Farke's fourth season at the helm, counter with a mix of Premier League veterans and fresh faces, led by Dominic Calvert-Lewin up front and Ethan Ampadu marshaling the midfield. Wilfried Gnonto and Daniel James add pace to Farke's attack.
With both sides still shaping their squads before the new campaign, Chicago offers a chance to build momentum ahead of the season opener later in August.

Liverpool's latest transfer thinking appears to have turned towards Bradley Barcola, with the Paris Saint-Germain winger emerging as a major target as planning continues for life after Mohamed Salah. The idea is easy to understand on talent alone. Barcola is young, quick, refined in possession and already seasoned at elite level. Yet once the excitement settles, the shape of the move becomes more complicated.
Liverpool are preparing an opening bid for the France international, who is valued by PSG at around £145 million. With performance-related clauses reportedly capable of taking the package to €150 million, this is the sort of deal that alters the landscape of a window. It would not be a speculative addition or a market opportunity seized on a whim. It would be a declaration, one that places Barcola at the centre of Liverpool's attacking future.
That is precisely why the positional debate matters so much. Salah's departure at the end of last season left a structural absence as much as an emotional one. Replacing his goals is one challenge, replacing his function another. Liverpool lost a right-sided forward who shaped the geometry of every game. The question now is whether Barcola answers that need, or whether he solves a different problem entirely.
There is no dispute over the player's ability. Jamie Carragher made that clear when discussing the move, saying: "He's a great player, there's no doubt about that – I'd love to get Barcola at Liverpool,". But his wider concern goes to the architecture of the squad. Liverpool, in his view, are better stocked on the left than they are on the right, which makes a huge investment in Barcola feel curious unless it is part of a broader redesign.
That concern has substance. Cody Gakpo offers a reliable option from the left, Rio Ngumoha remains one of the club's more intriguing younger attackers and Víctor Munoz has also been added. In isolation, signing another left-sided player of elite pedigree sounds attractive. In practical terms, though, elite squads still require a certain balance. Too much accumulation on one flank can create a shortage elsewhere, particularly when the outgoing player was as singular as Salah.

It goes without saying that Liverpool's main goal this summer should be to try and win the Premier League.
Most people expected them to easily retain the ***** le last term but, since Arne Slot decided to completely change things, that was far from the case.
Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo's strengths weren't played to which led to the duo barely contributing to the Reds' attack and having some of their worst-ever seasons for the Anfield outfit.
And, now that Salah has left and Andoni Iraola is in charge, it feels like now is the best time for the new era of Liverpool to arise.

The Netherlands job remains one of the biggest posts in international football, and the noise around Arne Slot refuses to go away. Since Ronald Koeman stepped down after the Dutch World Cup exit this summer, the Dutch FA has been searching for a figure capable of restoring direction and belief.
Slot has quickly become one of the standout names in that conversation. Reports in recent weeks have suggested he has already held initial talks and remains firmly on the shortlist. For Liverpool supporters, that naturally catches the eye. A Netherlands role would see him working closely with Virgil van Dijk, Cody Gakpo, Ryan Gravenberch and Jeremie Frimpong on the international stage, a familiar spine with plenty of quality.
Slot is far from the only contender. Peter Bosz has also emerged as a serious option, with the Dutch FA understood to have considered him even before Koeman walked away. Bosz brings experience, presence and a clear footballing identity, all things that matter when a national side is trying to steady itself.
Erik ten Hag has been mentioned too, but his position appears clear enough. He has said, "I'm not available," before adding, "I have deliberately chosen this step. I'm working on that for the next two years anyway. I'm having a good time here and would like to help the club further." That sounds like a man who has no intention of jumping ship.

Michael Edwards could be exploring the transfer of the summer for Liverpool.
It has not been an easy start to the window for the Reds. They had been forced into a managerial change after Arne Slot's position became untenable and then they had missed out on their primary target after Yan Diomande decided he favoured a move to Paris Saint Germain.
This compounded by the fact that a World Cup taking place has stalled the market has left Liverpool with a lot of work to do.
The Reds have lost some key personnel this summer, and could lose more in the coming weeks with speculation surrounding several of the club's midfielders and attackers.
Who knows what the future holds for Cody Gakpo, Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones - all of whom appear to be open to a move away from Anfield.

Fabrizio Romano is the guru of transfers with the Italian journalist rarely ever getting any information he has about Liverpool wrong.
The Reds are clearly gearing themselves up for wholesale changes this summer after their fifth-place finish in the Premier League last season.
