Tarik Skubal knew what the phone call meant before anyone needed to explain it.
The Detroit Tigers ace had stepped away from the dugout during Saturday night's game against the Athletics, something he had also done the previous evening to escape the heat and keep moving. This time, he never returned for the final innings.
"I got a phone call," Skubal said via the Detroit News. "And I knew what that was about."
Just like that, his seven-season run with the Tigers was over.

Dejan Savicevic finds it baffling that the late Franco Baresi was never recognised with a Ballon d'Or trophy and has laid the blame for that at the hands of journalists who did not vote for the iconic former Rossoneri captain in the voting procedure.
Tributes continue to roll in for the legendary Baresi, who recently died at the age of 66.
Milan icons from various generations will congregate in the city on Tuesday for Baresi's funeral. Savicevic will be among the attendees, and he stopped to speak about his former captain in an in-depth interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport that was published on Sunday.
"He was a great person, a great man. He was a great teammate and a wonderful player. He had football running through him, he understood everything and had an incredible vision of the game," Savicevic recalled.

The Major League Baseball trade deadline is quickly approaching, and one former Auburn Tiger is the center of many trade discussions.
Casey Mize has flourished into a key piece of the Detroit Tigers' starting pitching rotation ever since he was selected No. 1 overall in the 2018 MLB Draft. Despite posting quality numbers this season in the Motor City, his team is sitting in fourth place in the American League Central standings and is deemed a "seller" ahead of the trade deadline.
This means Mize has the chance to join a World Series-contending roster through a trade.

Alexander Isak does not need a marketing campaign. He needs minutes, fitness and goals. That is the reality after a first Liverpool season that never got moving under Arne Slot and was then wrecked by injury. Now there is a reset under Andoni Iraola, and few players at Anfield need it more.
On Sunday in Chicago, the £125m striker is set to pull on a Liverpool shirt for the first time since May. For him, that matters. For Liverpool, it matters more. This is not about hype or transfer fee chatter. It is about whether one of the most gifted forwards in the league can finally give Liverpool the version of himself they thought they were buying.
Last summer was chaos. Isak was training alone at former club Real Sociedad after refusing to travel on Newcastle United's pre-season tour of the Far East. Newcastle were furious, and with reason. A minor muscle injury was given as the explanation, but it was obvious he was forcing the issue. He wanted out, and he was prepared to make that clear.
That push came from frustration. He believed promises had been broken, especially over a new contract that had been expected before the change in Newcastle's internal structure. The result was a long transfer saga and a move that came too late to help either club. By the time Liverpool had him, the season had already started and he was behind physically.
An international break followed immediately after his move on September 1, and more breaks arrived in October and November. Liverpool tried to manage him through a tailored fitness programme, but there was no rhythm to build on. It was stop-start from the beginning, and players who rely on sharpness suffer most in those conditions.

Manchester United outcast Joshua Zirkzee is reportedly keen to join Juventus this summer, but the Italians must sell first. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, the Turin giants are facing a race against time to offload unsettled Jonathan David.
David, who joined Juventus on a Bosman deal last summer, endured an underwhelming first season in Serie A. The Canadian striker scored just six goals in 35 league appearances, while it's also worth noting that he fell out of favor with the home crowd at the Allianz Stadium.
Therefore, Juventus have put the former Lille star up for sale. Despite arriving in Turin as one of the most highly rated center-forwards in Europe's top-five leagues, there's currently a shortage of suitors for David, whose future could determine the club's pursuit of Zirkzee.

Through the first four days of training camp practices, the Tennessee ***** ans have seen some ups and downs, as well as solid growth from several players. This is a revelation for a team that is counting on many young players to develop into consistent impact players during its rebuild.
Every year there is at least one player who comes out of nowhere and makes a name for himself. In the early days of camp, it appears second-year wideout Elic Ayomanor has taken a massive step forward, and players such as rookie Anthony Hill and second-year edge Femi Oladejo are flashing. But as of now, rookie tight end Jaren Kanak would be widely considered the biggest surprise of camp so far.

Adrian E. Allison, chief relationship officer at the Pro Football Hall of Fame, is a proud graduate of the Canton City School District. He would later become the youngest superintendent and the first African American to serve in that role.
Allison, 54, and his family now reside in Jackson Township. He has been married for 28 years to his college sweetheart, Krista. They have two daughters, both of whom are McKinley High School and The Ohio State University graduates: Averi (who also earned her master's degree from Carnegie Mellon University) and Anastasia.
He graduated from Baldwin-Wallace University and then followed his girlfriend (now his wife) to law school at Case Western Reserve University. Allison began his career as an Ohio ******* istant attorney general, then served as an executive at the Ohio Department of Education and eventually joined the Canton City School District before becoming superintendent in 2013. He joined the Hall of Fame in 2019.
"No matter where I travel in this country, I proudly wear Hall of Fame apparel," Allison said. "In every community I visit, people immediately recognize the iconic logo and know exactly where it belongs: Canton, Ohio. That recognition is something I never take for granted. Barcelona's search for a new number has hardly extended beyond Julian Alvarez, as the club remain determined to sign the Argentine forward.

To the editor: OSU is adding a JPMorgan Chase logo patch to all 36 varsity sport teams uniforms. The football team uniforms will also have a Nike logo and a Big Ten patch. In couple more years the uniforms will look like NASCAR driver suits. What next, naming rights for the team benches and medic tents? How about all the team support staff and managers having patches like the NASCAR pit crews? Next, they can add bus wraps for home and away rental busses with all kinds of additional sponsorships. Finally, we can start to add patches all over the uniforms of TBDBITL. Is the day very far away when the players and coaches will have to wear custom gear anytime they are on campus? The quest to grab more money to buy more players and build bigger facilities is beyond the pale.

Dear Brian: One thing became very clear after LeBron James announced his intent to take his talents (less than what they used to be) to Philadelphia: He never had any loyalty to the city, fan base or organization in Cleveland — a fan base that revered him, one that hoped he'd sign with the Cavs and end his career on a fairy tale note with one last hope of another championship. It was not to be. It was James' right to sign anywhere he wanted, no questioning that, but he was never the King of Cleveland, not even close. Yes, he helped bring a long-awaited championship to the city of Cleveland, and for that I am ever grateful! The Indians should have in 1997, but that is another story. It's apparent James didn't revere Cleveland as much as we would have liked to think. Remember him yelling "This is for you, Cleveland" after the Game 7 Finals victory in 2016? I think that was more about redemption for himself after he bungled the first free agency decision than about Cleveland ending its 52-year championship drought. The true face of Cleveland is Jose Ramirez. No doubt about it, not even close. The future Hall of Famer has shown his love for the city, the fans and the organization time and time again, signing extensions for less than what he could get on the open market. One could argue Joe Thomas and even Joel Bitonio are better representations of Cleveland than LeBron ever was. I'll always be grateful for the 2016 championship, but leave LeBron out of the King of Cleveland discussions.

From the moment LeBron James came to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2018, some fans of the team disliked him and even felt he was encroaching on the territory of Kobe Bryant, who had retired just two years earlier. James would lead the Lakers to the NBA championship in 2020 just after they had missed the playoffs in six straight seasons, but despite sticking around for eight years, he was never exactly beloved the way other franchise greats were.
Shaquille O'Neal has been there and done that. Lakers fans fell in love with him when he arrived in 1996, but once Bryant emerged as a superstar a few years later, fans fell harder for him and favored him over O'Neal. O'Neal, of course, requested to be traded in 2004 and was sent to the Miami Heat amidst a feud between him and the legendary guard, and he spent quite a bit of time talking trash about Bryant following his exit.
During an appearance on SiriusXM NBA Radio, O'Neal explained how, as a result, he can understand why Lakers fans never fully embraced James.
"They didn't love me; they loved Kobe. They didn't love me. Listen, this is what we call B.O.B brother, the business of basketball. When they get like me, when I'm in charge, I'm a difficult man to deal with. The thing has to be done my way, and sometimes people don't agree with that, so when you get you up out of there... I can kinda understand both sides."
O'Neal eventually reconciled with Bryant and the Lakers, and he got his No. 34 jersey retired in 2013. James' exit this summer was painless and relatively quiet, and he likely did the franchise a favor by letting it know through Rich Paul, his longtime agent, that he was leaving just hours before free agency officially opened on June 30.

Most people know the general gist of Maycon Cardozo's rise through the ranks of Bayern Munich so far, but it is worth repeating how rapidly the pint sized magician has overcome every challenge thus far. Picked as part of the 2024 Bayern World Squad edition, the Brazilian impressed the likes of Roy Makaay and his fellow World Squad coaches so much that they unanimously agreed to recommend Bayern to sign the youngster from the Sports Thai Bavaria Academy in Thailand. He duly joined the U17s in January 2025, moved up to the U-19s in the summer, made it to the U-23s by January 2026 and made his first team debut under Vincent Kompany in March 2026 in a 4-1 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Now two 2026/27 preseason games are gone and Cardozo has passed his next challenge. Moved all over the pitch to unfamiliar positions, including on the right flank against Rottach-Egern, he nevertheless impressed. Nor are just his performances on the pitch impressive, multiple coaches have been impressed by the youngster's work ethic. Bildreports (as captured by iMiaSanMia) that Cardozo has an outside chance at a role with the first team for the 2026/27 season:
Maycon Cardozo has emerged as one of the winners of the first part of pre-season. The 17-year old Brazilian stood out in training with his work ethic and attacking drive, receiving recognition from Vincent Kompany. Cardozo also left a good impression in yesterday's friendly and is increasingly making a strong case for himself to be permanently included in the first team
FCB II head coach Dante was also impressed: "Maycon always gives it his all – always. I even had to stop him once and tell him he shouldn't always be sprinting. He is always motivated and focused, always thinking about the next ball. That's a great quality. With his attitude, he's a role model for our team."
Because of this commitment and performances, Cardozo will be included in the squad for the Asia tour, and could get game time in the friendlies there. After the tour, it will become clearer whether Cardozo has a realistic chance of playing a role for the first team this season.

Luis Castillo's tenure as a Seattle Mariner has apparently come to an end. The Mariners announced tonight they have traded Castillo to the White Sox in exchange for reliever Seranthony Dominguez, outfielder Nolan Jones, and catching prospect Boston Smith. Per Daniel Kramer, the Mariners aren't sending any money to offset the remainder of what Castillo is owed on the extension he signed in 2022, which runs through 2027 with a vesting option for 2028 if he reaches 180 innings.
In exchange, the Mariners will be absorbing Dominguez's not-insignificant salary for the remainder of this year and the next year of his contract, when he's slated to make $10.5M. Dominguez also has an option for 2028, but it's a mutual option (with a $2M buyout).
The 31-year-old Dominguez is on pace for the worst season of his career; he still collects strikeouts but his walk rate has ballooned over the past two seasons; he's currently walking over 14% of batters faced. Compounding that problem is a serious case of dingeritis – a career-high 16.7% of fly ******* he's allowed have gone for homers, even in Chicago's ******* ious confines. But he does still strike a lot of batters out and generate whiffs, he can still rush the fastball up at 97+, and he's got a full complement of pitches for the Mariners pitching coaches to work with, even if he's primarily a heater-sweeper pitcher as a reliever. It's an expensive gamble, but the Mariners are both solving their rotation logjam (temporarily) and shedding Castillo's contract in the move; if Dominguez can be Mariner-pitching-hive-minded into even a serviceable mid-innings arm, that's a boon to the beleaguered bullpen.
The other pieces coming over in the trade are interesting in their own right. Nolan Jones is probably a name you're familiar with if you were big into prospects a decade-ish ago; he was a second-rounder drafted by Cleveland in 2016 as a highly athletic two-sport athlete and attracted a lot of prospect attention as he made his way up the ladder for his 6'4" frame, easy raw power from the left side, and a star turn in the Arizona Fall League and the Futures Game in 2019. Unfortunately, injuries derailed his ascent, and he was dealt to the Rockies in 2023 for Juan Brito shortly after making his big-league debut. Now 28, Jones has spent time in the bigs but never really latched on consistently (outside of one 2023 season where he seemed to put it all together for Colorado), mostly due to a monstrous K rate compounded by the length of his swing. He's been with the White Sox Triple-A team this season, blocked by the surprisingly good play at the big-league level, and will likely serve a similar role for Seattle as outfield depth at Tacoma.

It seems like the conference realignment talks never truly end, and more often than not, the Tulane Green Wave is a team that is brought up for a potential big move.
The Green Wave has found success in the American Conference in recent years, and there's never been a better time to make the jump to a bigger conference. While the Pac-12 seems the most likely right now due to the fact that it is actively rebranding and finding new members, it's not the most logical choice for Tulane: the majority of its programs are located on the West Coast or Pacific Northwest.
Rather, what would happen if the Green Wave made a jump to a Power Four conference? The team was part of the Southeastern Conference long ago, but it might be too ambitious to consider a return to that league, especially since it recently added the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners. The Atlantic Coast Conference, however, seems like a more feasible landing spot. The Olive Green and Sky Blue is already in decently close proximity to some of the conference's core schools, and on a university level, it aligns well academically.
Football is the obvious moneymaker, and Tulane has made history in recent seasons. The team took down the eventual ACC Champion Duke Blue Devils early in the 2025 season and ended the year with its first-ever College Football Playoff appearance. If its current trajectory continues, then the program has what it takes to compete with many of the ACC's teams.
Of course, it's important to remember that every sport should be taken into consideration when there is a possibility to make a big jump. Tulane has a storied tradition in college baseball, but the team would likely struggle a bit more against a loaded field in the ACC. Both basketball programs would also take a hit. Most of the the other sports in Uptown would probably fare about as well as they have thus far, but a few programs would likely have to align with other conferences to have enough quality league opponents; the beach volleyball and bowling programs are currently members of Conference USA due to this issue.

Collin **** ton has the opportunity to make a sizable impact on the Los Angeles Lakers this season. The 6-foot-3 guard, who signed a two-year, $19 million contract with them this summer, is a scoring threat who can handle the ball, facilitate and speed up the pace of the game.
Sexton is also a very energetic, high-motor player who always gives 100% on both ends of the floor. During his first media availability as a member of the Lakers, he was asked about the vision that coach JJ Redick and general manager Rob Pelinka have for the team and how he can fit into that vision.
"Just toughness," **** ton said. "I would say the toughness. They wanna be able to compete in all aspects on the defensive side, but also the offensive side and just being able to change the pace of the game whenever it's needed. I feel like sometimes walking the ball up and letting the other team set up their defense is tough, sometimes you gotta be able to change the flow. We talked and it was a really good conversation and they believe in me. I just feel like at the end of the day, whenever a coach believes in you, and like you said, he's gonna be hard on me and yell at scream at me, so I like that. I think that's what gets the best from me."
Last season, Los Angeles was 20th in defensive rating, 16th in fast-break points and 22nd in pace. One would expect the team's pace and transition opportunities to increase at least somewhat thanks to the addition of players such as **** ton who can attack off the dribble in the open court. The acquisition of men such as **** ton and forwards Ziaire Williams and Matisse Thybulle, all of whom are adept at coming up with steals, should also help L.A.'s transition game.
Sexton averaged 15.4 points and 3.3 **** ists in 23.7 minutes a game while shooting 48.5% overall and 40.1% from 3-point range last season. The Lakers would occasionally get blown out in games and seem to almost mail it in this past season, but with a better bench, more youth and more athleticism, they may not happen as much this coming season.

He has continued to go viral for his big moments, including when he was at Crypto.com Arena to watch and laugh at LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers as they took on the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Over the past few months, Brooks has regularly appeared as a guest on livestreams with the influencer "N3ON." It has led to many funny moments, including the latest one, when he called out Minnesota Timberwolves guard LaMelo Ball for not being able to compete for the USA after his high school days at Chino Hills.
Back in the mid to late 2010s, the Ball family was one of the most recognizable groups in sports. Lonzo became a phenomenon as he became a standout guard at UCLA, and he was drafted second overall in the 2017 NBA Draft.
Unfortunately, LiAngelo did not get the same success, but he was still relatively well known overseas. The same can be said about LaMelo, who also played overseas in Lithuania and Australia. However, LaMelo did make it to the NBA, as he got drafted third overall in the 2020 NBA Draft.

For the first time since training camp opened on Wednesday, fans were in attendance for Day 3 of camp for the Washington Commanders. The day began with some injury news, as head coach Dan Quinn revealed tight end John Bates was dealing with a strained hamstring and would miss "a couple of weeks."
But there was some good injury news: after missing only one practice with a sore foot, wide receiver Treylon Burks was back.
Quarterback Jayden Daniels had his best practice of the week so far, making multiple excellent throws. Daniels and Burks connected for an impressive conversion during third-down drills. Overall, though, it was another day where the defense held the upper hand.
So, which players stood out on Day 3? We look at four standouts from the third day of Washington's training camp.
Every day, it seems like a running back is making this list. Rachaad White is off to a fast start, and so is Jacory Croskey-Merritt. Jeremy McNichols, the 30-year-old, 10-year veteran, said, "Don't forget about me."

It's always good to have a backup plan, but having a backup outfit can truly prepare you for anything.
When Princess Diana walked down the aisle on July 29, 1981, the world saw one of the most iconic wedding gowns in history. What no one knew was that another dress was waiting behind the scenes just in case disaster struck.
Designed by husband-and-wife duo David and Elizabeth Emanuel, the secret gown was created as an insurance policy while the now-famous wedding dress was being finished. "I was a bit neurotic," Elizabeth Emanuel previously told PEOPLE. "I thought, 'What happens if somebody breaks in and steals the dress or something spills or there's a fire?' So I thought, 'I'm going to make a backup dress.'"
Unlike Diana's legendary ivory silk taffeta dress with its record-breaking 25-foot train, the spare design was noticeably different. It featured slimmer sleeves, white silk instead of ivory, and a much shorter train. It also was never fully completed because, fortunately, it was never needed.
Perhaps the biggest surprise? Diana had no idea it even existed. According to Emanuel, she and David intentionally kept the project a secret so they wouldn't add unnecessary stress to the bride ahead of one of the most watched weddings in history.

The final season of football for Aaron Rodgers was preceded by a reunion with his estranged family. He spoke about it during a Saturday appearance on NFL Network.
"There's been a lot of conversation about it outside of my own conversation for so many years," Rodgers told Kyle Brandt. "You know, a big part of it was getting married and having those conversations with my wife that allowed me to kind of open up to the possibility of coming together. It's been a couple-year process now, the conversations with them, but, you know, I've been very, very closed off about that part of my life, and I want to keep it that way. But there's been a narrative that's gone on for too long, that I wanted to kind of shut down.
"And it's been really beautiful to reconnect with them. All of them. And I got to spend a week, a long weekend recently. Those pictures are from in Nashville. My parents, my brother, and his sweet wife, and their incredible two kids. I got to be an uncle. It's just really — it's really special. So a lot of my life has been full circle I think the last year. And that was part of it. I knew it was part of it. And I'm happy to be reunited, and that part of my life is a really beautiful addition, and I've got to give my wife a lot of credit for — not that she was pushing me, because she never was, but just the way that she loves and supports me, having her by my side during this process has been really special. And I missed those relationships. And there was reasons for it that don't need to be talked about, but I'm thankful that that's come all the way back around."
Although Rodgers said he reconnected with "all of them," he mentioned only one brother. It's unclear whether Aaron and his brother, Jordan, have reconnected.
It was Jordan who brought the family issues to light during a 2016 stint on The Bachelorette. Two years later, Jordan chided Aaron for his donation to wildfire-relief efforts after (per Jordan) Aaron didn't call their parents to check on them during the fires.

Las Vegas Raiders edge rusher Maxx Crosby is among the great players in the NFL at his position. Last season came with its share of challenges for Crosby, but that has not diminished the esteem that he is held in among his peers.
CBS Sports ranked Crosby No. 5 overall in their edge defender rankings this year.
"Crosby excels as a run defender and pass rusher, has a motor that never stops and basically never leaves the field. His competitive edge is exactly what you want from a face of the franchise."
Myles Garrett (No. 1), Micah Parsons (No. 2), Will Anderson Jr. (No. 3) and Aidan Hutchinson (No. 4) were all ranked above Crosby.
Crosby recorded 10 sacks, an interception and two forced fumbles last season. The veteran edge rusher also recorded 28 tackles for loss in 2025. He was the bright spot on the Las Vegas Raiders' roster last season, and despite the team finishing with the worst record in the league (3-14), and missing two games on the year, was still one of the most relentless edge rushers in getting after the quarterback.

During the 2025 season, 28 different Dodgers players spent time on the injured list, some of them for multiple stints. That matched the team total from 2024, while in 2023 the Dodgers saw 34 players miss time on the IL.
Every injured-list stint is a transaction and will also be chronicled on our 40-man roster page. Both are essentially living documents that will be constantly updated throughout the season as these moves happen.
Injured-list stints for pitchers are a minimum of 15 days, and for position players it's at least 10 days.

FCS coaches and players gathered to share their thoughts on the upcoming season (amongst other things) over the last few weeks at various media days across the country. Here are some of the things they had to say:
"I never say that I came back, I always say that I never left." – Chris Parson, Austin Peay
When Chris Parson was asked at UAC Media Day why he decided to return with Austin Peay after a breakout year in 2025, the star signal caller was was quick to correct the notion that he came back and cited his teammates at coaches as a major reason why he chose to stay instead of transferring. He is expected to be one of the top FCS quarterbacks this year and the Governors are picked by several to be a playoff team in 2026 largely because of his decision to remain with the team heading into his senior year.
"It's almost like you're recruiting but you're de-recruiting. I may not have all the answers. I'm not Nick Saban or Kirby Smart." – Will Healy, ETSU
During SoCon Media Day, second-year ETSU head coach Will Healy was asked by The Bluebloods how he and his staff approach the challenge of getting the right guys for their culture in Johnson City out of the transfer portal with so little time to actually get to know most of the players. Healy's answer was insightful and candid as he spoke about what he pitches to potential Buccaneers. He talked of the importance of players' willingness to be held to a high standard at his program and the importance of figuring out what a prospect player is looking for when they come to East Tennessee State. Healy's Bucs went 7-5 in his first season.

Sacramento, Calif. — Jackson Jobe was looking forward to moving his rehab up a level and pitching with Triple-A Toledo.
Mother Nature had other plans.
Tigers manager AJ Hinch said Saturday that Jobe's rehab start was moved to High-A West Michigan because of weather concerns in Columbus, where the Mud Hens are playing this weekend.
"Yeah, we're working through some weather issues," Hinch said. "We never want to miss a day."
Jobe, working back from Tommy John surgery, is in the final leg of his build-up. He made two starts in A-ball and his last two were with Double-A Erie.

Former Detroit Lions defensive tackle Brodric Martin is getting another NFL opportunity.
The Arizona Cardinals signed Martin on Saturday after placing defensive lineman P.J. Mustipher on injured reserve with a foot injury. The move brings Martin back to the organization that originally traded the No. 96 overall pick to Detroit during the 2023 NFL Draft.
Martin was one of Brad Holmes' boldest developmental bets.
Detroit surrendered the No. 122, No. 139 and No. 168 selections to move into the third round and select the massive Western Kentucky defensive tackle. Arizona used those three picks on guard Jon Gaines II, quarterback Clayton Tune and linebacker Owen Pappoe.
At 6-foot-5 and more than 330 pounds, Martin possessed the rare size Detroit wanted in the middle of its defensive line. He recorded 31 tackles, 1.5 sacks and two pass breakups during his final college season, but his physical tools never translated into a steady role with the Lions.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Oprah Winfrey says she will close the school for underprivileged girls she set up in South Africa two decades ago at the end of next year.
Winfrey opened the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in 2007 after being inspired by conversations with former South African President Nelson Mandela about the transformative power of educating girls. He was among the guests at the school's opening ceremony.
Winfrey's charitable foundation ran and funded the school, but it was always part of the agreement that the academy campus near Johannesburg be ultimately handed over to the provincial education department, the academy said.
"The dream was never simply to build a school," Winfrey said in a statement issued by the academy on Wednesday. "It was to invest in the limitless potential of young women. That mission doesn't end with one campus. It continues in every girl whose future can be transformed through education."
The academy said Winfrey's commitment to educating South African girls would continue through an expanded national scholarship program supporting academically talented girls at leading schools across the country.

Chicago Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson has always kept his contract situation top of mind ever since coming into the league. From 2023 when he was the subject of trade talks to the summer of 2025 when he discussed possibly doing a new deal after he signed his four-year extension during the spring of 2024, Johnson has never wavered when talking about his future in the league. Now prior to the 2026 season, Johnson eyes a new payday and understands this could be his last season in Chicago.
On Saturday, Johnson met with the media and was asked about 2026 being a pivotal season with the explosion in deals for cornerbacks in recent years. Johnson didn't hesitate with his answer. "It's definitely a contract year," he said. "We all know with the cap hit and all that stuff. It's definitely a contract year for me, so at the end of the day, whether that's here or somewhere else, I've got to put it on tape that I am still a top guy in this league."
Johnson is set to make $24 million in 2026, which is the second-highest total among cornerbacks for this upcoming season, trailing only Marlon Humphrey of the Baltimore Ravens. But as Johnson alluded to, he has no remaining guaranteed money after this season and can be cut next offseason to save $16 million. If 2026 is a repeat of what happened in 2025, then that decision will be easy for the Bears.
Last year, Johnson dealt with groin injuries that caused him to miss two months of games. When he returned to action in late November, Johnson was a shell of himself and played through pain to help the Bears capture the NFC North and return to the postseason for the first time since his rookie year. Now that he's fully healthy, though, Johnson is eyeing a third big contract.
"I'm not a dummy. I structured my deal a certain way to put myself back at the table at the age of 27," Johnson said. "For me, it was always for this point to get here and then show out and do what I do and be healthy and be out there doing what I do best. That's covering, that's making plays, and being a difference maker. And then from there, wherever that contract talk goes, it goes."
