On August 13, a federal appeals court ruled in favor of Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD), upholding a preliminary injunction that bars the defendants from importing or facilitating the sale of foreign-market Gilead-branded medications in the US. The US Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit found that the differences between Gilead's HIV medication for the US market and the foreign versions being imported were "material, not theoretical." The controversy began in December 2024 when Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD) filed suit against a number of companies, including third-party administrator Meritain Health, pharmacy benefit manager ProAct, and pharmacies Rx Valet and Advanced Pharmacy, alleging illegal imports of its best-selling HIV drug Biktarvy.
The dispute dates back to December 2024, when Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD) sued a group of companies, including third-party administrator Meritain Health, pharmacy benefit manager ProAct, and pharmacies Rx Valet and Advanced Pharmacy, alleging illegal imports of its top-selling HIV drug Biktarvy. The lawsuit arose from a specific instance in which a patient in Maryland received the medicine in the mail from Turkey, with label instructions written in Turkish.
A federal district court in Baltimore ruled in Gilead's favor and ordered a preliminary injunction, determining that the company was likely to succeed on its Lanham Act trademark violation and unfair competition arguments. As the case continued, the injunction was increased to include new sellers like CanaRx, ElectRx, and ScriptSourcing. The defendants filed an appeal with the Fourth Circuit, and the district judge declined to suspend the injunction while the appeal was pending, thus the import restriction has been in effect the entire time. The recent ruling maintains the order rather than overturning it.
In court documents, Rx Valet stated that the Turkish-sourced Biktarvy was chemically identical to the US version, which was offered at a significantly higher price. Meritain, for its part, said that it has never supported getting non-FDA-approved pharmaceuticals from outside the US and denies the claims, despite being named as a defendant.
The Fourth Circuit rejected the defendants' main argument that the imported and domestic versions of Biktarvy are interchangeable. The court's judgment that the two versions differ materially, not just in packaging or labeling, but also in the quality-control protocols that each version goes through before reaching a patient, challenges the basic argument that these alternative funding programs have used to support their business model.

On a cloudy, seventeen-degree evening in the federal capital, 1. FC Union Berlin (0-1-1, 15th) played host to FC Schalke 04 (0-1-1, 14th) in the third matchweek of their 2026/27 Bundesliga campaigns at Stadion An der Alten Försterei.
Union Berlin, in their eighth Bundesliga season, managed to draw Eintracht Frankfurt 3-3 on the opening matchweek, but failed to land a single shot on target in an 0-4 defeat to Bayer 04 Leverkusen last weekend. As for Schalke, who return to the Bundesliga for the first time since 2022/23, they lost their opener 0-3 to FC Augsburg but managed to follow it with a scoreless draw against the reigning German champions, FC Bayern München.
This is the seventh meeting between the two sides in their histories, with the current head-to-head record an even 1-4-1. Schalke's lone win came in 2019/20, a 2-1 result at Veltins-Arena - Union's only victory was a dominant 6-1 result in the 2022/23 season, with that match also having been played in Gelsenkirchen. With the other sixteen teams yet to play their third matches, the winning side from this match would move up to seventh place in the table, and will likely be in the middle of the table by the time that all matches are complete on Sunday.
The hosts, in red, would kick off the match and go left to right in the opening term, with Schalke, in blue, going right to left when on the attack. It would take ten minutes for the visitors to get the first chance, as a through ball from Robin Gosens on the left side of the Union half would reach Kenan Karaman at the edge of the box. The Turkish striker and team captain saw enough ******* e to direct a shot towards the top-left corner, and did not miss by much, as his right-footed attempt went over the hands of a jumping Frederik Rønnow and slightly over the bar.
Schalke would win a corner just five minutes later, whipped in near-post by Adil Aouchiche; the cross would be met by a powerful header from Dejan Ljubičić, but the Austrian attacking midfielder would send the ball well above the top-right corner and out of play. Aouchiche would then get another chance of his own in the nineteenth minute, but his right-footed curler towards the top-left corner was fantastically denied by a leaping Rønnow.

Roma open the Champions League campaign with a creditable 1-1 draw away to Fenerbahce, as Bryan Cristante's opener was cancelled out by Archie Brown.
The Giallorossi returned to the tournament after seven years and coming off three consecutive Serie A victories. Only Lorenzo Pellegrini was still out of action. Devyne Rensch was back, with Donyell Malen, Paulo Dybala and Matias Soulé.
Fenerbahce's last Champions League proper game was 18 years ago, but Matteo Guendouzi was suspended after insulting French fans during the fiery play-off with Lyon. Jayden Oosterwolde and Marco Asensio were injured, with ex-Serie A players Milan Skriniar, Romelu Lukaku and Mert Muldur in the squad, plus Mason Greenwood, who chose the Turkish side over Roma this summer.
See how it all unfolded on the Liveblog.

Liverpool have signed a "milestone" new shirt sponsorship deal with Turkish Airlines, understood to be worth more than £60million ($81.2 million) a year.
The company, which has signed a five-year contract, becomes only the sixth in the club's history to have its name on the front of the shirt.
Liverpool believe it could be the most lucrative deal in Premier League history, although Manchester United's agreement with Snapdragon is claimed to be worth a similar amount.
Turkish Airlines will replace Standard Chartered, which has sponsored the club since 2010, with the current deal estimated to be worth in the region of £50m a season. The bank will become a global partner from next term.
"This is a milestone announcement for us and we are delighted to welcome Turkish Airlines as our main club partner from June 2027," chief commercial officer Ben Latty said.

At the end of the 2026-27 season, Liverpool will have had Standard Chartered as their primary shirt sponsor for 17 years. For the 18 years before that, Carlsberg were the shirt sponsor. Both sponsors crossed managerial eras, saw badge changes, and became **** ociated with the front of a Liverpool kit to the point they almost faded into the background.
Next season, for the first time in 35 years, there will be a new one, with the club announcing today that Turkish Airlines had agreed a five-year deal reportedly worth upwards of £300M that will see them become the club's new primary shirt sponsor.
Though some sponsorship deals have a higher total value, those include stadium and other naming rights and Liverpool's new deal is said to be the must lucrative in the Premier League for a front of shirt sponsor. In addition to being the first new sponsor in 35 years, Turkish Airlines will become just the sixth shirt sponsor in the club's history.
Liverpool got their first with Hitachi (1979-1982) before moving to Crown Paints (1982-1988), Candy (1988-1992), Carlsberg (1992-2010), and then Standard Chartered (2010-2027) .
"This is a milestone announcement for us and we are delighted to welcome Turkish Airlines from June 2027," said Liverpool Chief Commercial Officer Ben Latty in a press release. "The front of the Liverpool shirt holds a special place in the history of our Club, and we look forward to building a strong relationship—with already strong foundations built from those special memories back in 2005.

Turkish Airlines will become Liverpool's new front-of-shirt sponsor from the start of the 2027/28 season, the Premier League giants announced on Tuesday.
No fee was disclosed by the club, but the BBC reported that the five-year deal was worth £300 million ($406 million) in total.
A contract worth more than £60 million a season, would represent an increase on the current £50 million-per-season deal with retail bank Standard Chartered, who have been the Reds' front-of-shirt sponsor since 2010.
Liverpool's new deal is believed to be the most lucrative purely front-of-shirt agreement in Premier League history, with **** nal and Manchester City's agreements with Emirates and Etihad Airways respectively also involving stadium naming rights.
By contrast, six-time European champions Liverpool's home ground is still solely known by its original name of Anfield.

USL Dunkerque are reported to have reached a verbal agreement with M'Baye Niang (31) on a one-year contract with an option for a further year, according to L'Équipe.
A free agent since leaving Turkish club Gençlerbirliği SK, where he played and proved decisive on eight occasions (six goals, two ******* ists) in 27 appearances last season, the Senegalese striker is reportedly open to a return to France.
Having come through the SM Caen academy and played for Montpellier HSC, Stade Rennais, Girondins de Bordeaux and AJ Auxerre, Niang has made over 160 appearances and scored around 40 goals in Ligue 1.
A Senegal international (23 caps, four goals), the Meulan-born player also boasts significant international experience, having previously played for AC Milan, Watford and Torino, amongst others.
Having secured the services of Steven Nzonzi (37) this summer, USLD could well be set to pull off another major coup to round off their transfer window.

Liverpool have agreed a new five-year, £300m shirt sponsorship deal with Turkish Airlines for the start of next season.
The agreement, which the club believes is the most valuable in Premier League history, ends a 17-year front-of-the-shirt partnership with British multinational bank Standard Chartered.
Reports indicate the deal, which will come into effect on 1 June 2027, is worth more than £60m a season, believed to be a similar sum to Man Utd's current deal with Snapdragon.
Turkish Airlines branding will be on the front of Liverpool men's, women's and academy match shirts. Prior to Standard Chartered, front-of-the-shirt sponsors for Liverpool included Carlsberg, Candy and Crown Paints.
"The front of the Liverpool shirt holds a special place in the history of our club," Ben Latty, Liverpool's chief commercial officer, said.

Turkish Airlines will become Liverpool's front-of-shirt sponsor from the start of the 2027-28 season in a £300m deal.
The five-year contract is worth in excess of £60m a season, an increase on the current £50m-per-season deal with Standard Chartered, which has been the club's main partner since 2010 and is the existing front-of-shirt sponsor.
Liverpool believe the agreement with Turkish Airlines is the the most valuable front-of-shirt-only commercial deal in Premier League history.
Both ***** nal and Manchester City have deals with Emirates and Etihad Airways respectively, but those also involve stadium naming rights.
In February, Liverpool announced record revenues of more than £700m for the most recent financial year and were the highest-placed Premier League club in the Deloitte Football Money League.

Richarlison's situation at Tottenham has become increasingly complicated after a proposed move to Trabzonspor failed to materialise before the Turkish transfer deadline. As first reported by The Standard, the Brazil forward is now facing a shrinking market, with several possible routes already closed and very few obvious solutions left before the season moves on without him.
The key issue is straightforward. Richarlison has been left out of Tottenham's Premier League squad, a significant indication that Roberto De Zerbi does not see him as part of the immediate plan in north London. Everton had been linked earlier in the window, but that avenue went nowhere. Trabzonspor then emerged as a credible option, yet that deal also fell away before Friday's deadline.
That leaves Tottenham and Richarlison in an awkward position. Scotland, Belgium and the Netherlands are no longer open markets, while MLS is also off the table. The realistic alternatives are now fewer and more specialised.
Saudi Arabia stands out as the clearest remaining possibility, with its transfer window open until October 12. For players who have fallen out of the picture at Premier League clubs, that pathway has become increasingly common. Portugal could also hold some appeal, both stylistically and linguistically, with Primeira Liga clubs able to sign players until September 15.

Uefa has banned Fenerbahce midfielder Matteo Guendouzi for his team's opening two Champions League fixtures following a series of provocations and insults during a chaotic play-off victory away at Lyon last month.
The 27-year-old, previously a player for Lyon's major rivals Marseille, found himself at the centre of unrest before and after Fenerbahce's 2-1 win on 26 August, which included a mass brawl.
The victory secured the Turkish side a place in the Champions League for the first time in 18 years. Guendouzi, who previously made 82 appearances for ****** nal between 2018 and 2020, is set to sit out Fenerbahce's home encounter against Roma next Thursday alongside their trip to Aston Villa on 14 October.
He will be available for Fenerbahce's final six games in the league phase of the Champions League, starting with his side's match against Slavia Prague on 20 October.
Disciplinary verdicts released late on Friday detailed charges against Guendouzi for violating decent conduct rules, "insulting players or others present at the match" and provoking spectators.

ISTANBUL (AP) — Turkey is not backing away from the West as it seeks deeper ties with the East, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday as he headed back from a Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit.
The conference in Kyrgyzstan saw Erdogan hold a one-on-one meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at which they discussed further nuclear cooperation.
In comments made to journalists aboard the presidential plane, Erdogan reiterated Turkey's goal of becoming a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, or SCO, whose ten current members include Russia, China, India and Iran.
"I would also like to particularly emphasize that Turkey's membership perspective in the organization does not mean a break from a bloc or turning our backs on the West," the president said.
Turning to the war in Ukraine, during which Ankara has maintained friendly relations with both Moscow and Kyiv, Erdogan said it was his and Putin's "expectation … that the war between Russia and Ukraine ends peacefully as soon as possible."

Germany's new manager Jürgen Klopp's arrival was met with a massive celebration from German fans. While he has kept most of his plans under wraps thus far, fans have already made huge speculation on what to expect from the former Liverpool boss. While things are still secretive, there has now been an update that might impact the squad announcement on September 17th.
Klopp was seen visiting the Eintracht Frankfurt facilities on September 2nd, and was even captured speaking and laughing with the club's players. Conversations seemed friendly and it looks like the newly appointed manager is already building rapport with his players.
Unfortunately, the ship has failed on calling up their star talent Can Uzun, as he has already chosen the Turkish national team and played in 8 matches for the national side. However, this might indicate we might see the likes of Robin Koch, Jonathan Burkardt, or the most likely of them all, Noah Atubolu in September.
More unlikely players but also interesting cases would be younger talents such as Elias Baum, Ansgar Knauff, or Nnamdi Collins. Who do you think Klopp will call up from Frankfurt, if any? Let us know in the comments!

Roma will make their Champions League debut on Thursday, September 10th, a week from now, away to Fenerbahçe.
The Turkish team advanced to the playoffs against Lyon and were drawn in the same round as the Giallorossi. Following the match they won against Fonseca's team, a brawl broke out on the pitch.
It was a complete mess, with mockery, physical abuse, and verbal abuse, with former Lazio player Mattéo Guendouzi among the culprits.
This is why the French midfielder and Mason Greenwood are at risk for the Champions League match against Roma. UEFA has initiated disciplinary proceedings.
Fenerbahçe announced that UEFA has initiated disciplinary proceedings against players Mattéo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood: "Following the second leg of the UEFA Champions League play-off round, UEFA has initiated disciplinary proceedings against our club in relation to our players Mattéo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood."

NICOSIA, Aug 30 (Reuters) - At least eight people died and 18 were missing after a ferry carrying around 270 passengers and crew capsized off North Cyprus on Sunday, leaving survivors clinging to its overturned hull.
The privately owned ferry left the ‌port of Kyrenia at 12:30 p.m. local time (0930 GMT) and immediately started taking on water for an unknown reason, authorities ‌said. It was heading for the Turkish port of Tasucu in the eastern Mediterranean.
Survivors reported the ferry moving erratically, with its last hard impact with the water's surface breaking the bow of the two-hulled vessel, allowing water to seep in. The boat was carrying 267 people, including a crew of eight, while 241 people were rescued.
The disaster occurred just off the coast of Kyrenia, a popular holiday resort for both locals and tourists. The ferry was one of several shuttle sea services that link North Cyprus, a breakaway unrecognised Turkish Cypriot state, with Turkey daily.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the territory. Hours after ‌the incident relatives remained outside a local hospital and the port gates in Kyrenia, waiting for news of their loved ones. Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman said he was "deeply saddened" by the incident.

Dominik Livaković is set to sign for FC Barcelona, although it's still not clear whether he'll play for the Catalans this season or join Dinamo Zagreb on loan.
Barcelona already have Wojciech Szczęsny and Joan Garcia as goalkeepers, and there are rumors that they wanted to loan Livaković for a season while Szczęsny remains as backup to Garcia. However, competing whispers say that he could stay with Barça as Garcia's backup without going on loan first.

The main deciding factor is reportedly whether Barça will have enough **** e within the FIFA Fair Play salary limit. If there's room, he'll stay, if not, he'll go out on loan and re-join in a year.

Sky Germany's sources have revealed that Ermedin Demirović's transfer to Galatasaray is no longer going to happen.
The 28-year-old feels very comfortable in VfB Stuttgart's team and senses a strong connection to the club and the city.
Furthermore, the public backing the striker received from head coach Sebastian Hoeneß was another influential factor.
Stuttgart has been informed about Demirović's decision, even though the club negotiated until the last minute with Galatasaray.
The Turkish giants had offered up to €20million, of which €2million were bonuses, but the clubs couldn't reach a quick agreement.

Even though Arda Güler was one of Real Madrid's most notable players during the win against Espanyol in the season opener, the Turkish midfielder received frustration from Vinicius Junior after one specific play where Güler didn't pass him the ball.
Vinicius to Arda Güler: "Arda! Give me the ball just once, ***** ! It's always the same!"pic.twitter.com/MHtbcNxoI5
Real Madrid struggled creating chances during the second half of the game and while Vinicius was frustrated and ineffective during the entire game, he should not voice that frustration with his teammates, especially with the one player who has been controlling the game for his team.
These situations are common during a football game, but seeing Vinicius with that level of frustration with a teammate is noteworthy. Coach José Mourinho still has work to do in order to make sure that every player in that roster pulls in the same direction this season.

Mohamed Salah ‌‌opened his account in the Turkish Super Lig with a double as Trabzonspor beat Istanbul Basaksehir 2-1 to clinch their first win of the season.
Salah, who joined Trabzonspor on a free transfer after leaving Liverpool following a trophy-laden nine-year spell, also had two goals disallowed in a standout performance on Sunday.
Making his first league start after appearing as a substitute in Trabzonspor's ‌‌season opener, Salah put his side ahead in the eighth minute, capitalising after Basaksehir goalkeeper Muhammed Sengezer failed to hold on to the ball.
Basaksehir's Eldor Shomurodov equalised from the penalty spot in the 19th minute, but Salah restored Trabzonspor's lead three minutes into the second half, bursting down the right, exchanging passes with Ernest Muci and slotting the ball into the far corner.

ISTANBUL (AP) — Israel did not warn the United States before it struck an air base in northern Syria this week, despite fears of an escalation with the U.S. and NATO ally Turkey, the U.S. special envoy to Syria said.
Israel usually closely coordinates its military actions with the U.S., its key backer. Washington has tried to use this influence to moderate attacks as Israel carries out operations in Syria, Gaza and Lebanon.
Tom Barrack, who also serves as ambassador to Turkey, said the attack on Tuesday on the Abu Duhur base could have been Israel "baiting the Turks … that was the serious and worrying part."
However, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz contradicted the U.S. envoy's remarks about there being no warning, saying in a statement that Israel decided to alert senior members of the Syrian government. "Simultaneously, we transferred the intelligence reports to the relevant authorities in the U.S.," Katz added.
In the wake of the strikes, which caused damage but no casualties, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the base was attacked because Syria was "on the verge of breaching" an agreement by allowing Turkish troops to deploy there.
