Deion Sanders is entering his fourth season as Colorado's head coach, hoping to transform his 3-29 football team into a consistent winning program beginning in 2026.
As we prepare for the 2026 season, everyone is updating their head coach rankings, with Sanders ranked No. 54 nationally in one ranking and the seventh-best coach in the Big 12. CBS Sports updated its Big 12 coach rankings as well, with Coach Prime landing at No. 13 (No. 60 nationally) on the list. Sanders dropped 27 spots in the national rankings and six in the Big 12 after last season.
Sanders falls surprisingly behind Iowa State's Jimmy Rogers, but ahead of UCF's Scott Frost, Utah's Morgan Scalley and Kansas State's Collin Klein.
Here's what CBS Sports' Cody Nagel had to say about its ranking:
No Power Four coach saw his stock fall further after last season than Sanders. He dropped 27 spots in the national rankings and six in the Big 12, tied for the largest decline since Herm Edwards (-34) in 2022. The drop comes one year after Sanders was the biggest riser in the Power Four (+28), perfectly illustrating the up-and-down trajectory of his tenure in Boulder.

Texas A&M's deep secondary could prove to be one of the top units in the Southeastern Conference in 2026, with a slew of returning stars and talented transfer portal additions looking to make a splash.
During Tuesday's media availability, head coach Mike Elko said this year's secondary is as deep as it has ever been, after ranking second in the conference with just 2,296 total passing yards allowed last season. Safeties Dalton Brooks and Marcus Ratcliffe return for their senior campaigns, while Dezz Ricks, Julio Humphrey and Tennessee transfer Rickey Gibson III lock down the cornerback position. Colorado transfer safety Tawfiq Byard also joined the Aggies in the offseason, one year removed from not allowing a passing touchdown in over 500 snaps with the Buffaloes.
While the secondary unit performed well in the program's run to their first-ever appearance in the College Football Playoff, Texas A&M struggled to create turnovers, tied for 131st in the nation with just two interceptions. The Aggies' defense also ranked 31st with 11 forced fumbles, which has been a point of emphasis this offseason, according to Brooks during this week's player availability.
Here are some players in Texas A&M's secondary to watch in 2026 in our overview of the unit for the upcoming campaign:

The mood in the home clubhouse was upbeat a day after a trade deadline in which few teams showed interest in the bevy of available Cincinnati Reds players.
There seemed to be a resolve among a group of guys who generally like each other, an attitude of embracing the underdog role to try to make a run down the stretch. Some players seemed open to the suggestion that they could use the fact no serious playoff contenders wanted them as a motivating factor.
"A lot of guys love playing here and have been wanting to stay," Reds outfielder JJ Bleday said. "Whether teams were interested or not, we've still got to show up at 7 o'clock ready to go."
More: How Reds' Tyler Stephenson passed time during stressful trade deadline
Manager Terry Francona told reporters: "I don't care what makes them play better. But I don't know why they'd have a chip on their shoulder, because they know they're wanted. I think they're happy to be here. … That's the last thing you want is somebody to stay here and say, 'I wanted to go somewhere else.' "

Bijan Robinson's deal is done, and Jahmyr Gibbs could be next.
Robinson, who led the NFL in scrimmage yards last season, ended his hold-in Tuesday, Aug. 4, when he agreed to a three-year extension that averages $22.25 million per season, ESPN and NFL Network reported.
The market-setting deal makes Robinson the highest-paid running back in the NFL and could offer the framework for Gibbs to end his hold-in with the Detroit Lions.
Before Robinson's deal, Saquon Barkley ($20.6 million) was the only running back in the NFL making more than $20 million per season. Gibbs is set to make $3.183 million in base salary and bonuses this season and has two years left on his rookie contract.
"I mean, it's certainly not going to hurt," Lions coach Dan Campbell said Tuesday when asked if Robinson's deal could expedite a new contract for Gibbs. "It's not going to hurt, but we'll see. We'll see."

Wayne Newton Post 346 missed an Indiana American Legion Baseball State Tournament ******* le by the slimmest of margins last week, seemingly ending the Terre Haute team's stellar season.
Post 346 lost 1-0 to Valparaiso last Tuesday in the state championship game, allowing Valpo to advance into the next round at the Great Lakes Regional.
But last weekend, the Wisconsin state champion opted not to participate, the Terre Haute squad was offered an invitation to participate, and now the Post 346 team leaves Tuesday to compete in the eight-team field of the regional at Kentucky Proud Park in Lexington. Play in the double-elimination tournament begins Wednesday and concludes Sunday.
Ironcially, Wayne Newton, with a sparkling 34-5 season record, drew Valparaiso for a opening-day matchup at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday. Post 346 then plays either Washington, Missouri or Owensboro, Kentucky on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. (if Terre Haute loses Wednesday) or 4 p.m. (if Terre Haute wins Wednesday).
Also in the field are teams from Pittsburg, Kansas; Midland, Michigan; Aviston, Illinois and Lexington.

The 2026 summer tour of Canada is over for Marquette men's basketball, and I can happily report that the Golden Eagles went 3-0 on their three game set in Vancouver. They wrapped up the series with a 102-65 victory over Fraser Valley on Saturday afternoon.
Of interest to the proceedings: Marquette did this shorthanded, as they were without Adrien Stevens due to illness. If you were watching the live stats and missed the update on Twitter, and thus wondered what was up: No reason to worry long term.
And now, 2:40 of highlights from the game:
As was the case with the first two games, there was no streaming broadcast of this contest. Everything you're about to read comes at you by way of the live stats and the box score.
For the third game in a row, this was contested with four 10 minutes quarters.

They scored six in the bottom of the third, and Lane Thomas was traded to the Atlanta Braves in the fourth.
There's still a lot of game left, so let's keep the discussion going!

The Los Angeles Rams are going to be a problem this year, both on Sundays and in "Madden NFL 27". They're the highest-rated team in this year's edition of Madden, coming in with a 91 overall rating – three rating points better than every other team in football.
Their roster is loaded from top to bottom, as evidenced by the initial ratings for Madden 27. Matthew Stafford and Myles Garrett are both 99 overall, and Puka Nacua isn't far behind at 98 overall.
With the full ratings now released, we can take a look at other players on the team, including Davante Adams and Kevin Dotson, who are both 90 overall. The Rams have a whopping six players who are at least a 90 overall, and even more impressively, 17 players who are at least an 80.
Below are the top 25 Rams players in Madden 27 based on overall rating.

CHICAGO − Michigan football coach Kyle Whittingham is set to begin his 22nd season running a college program.
While there are plenty of unknowna, there is also plenty that remains the same no matter where he is. Whittingham wants his team to run effectively. He wants his defense to be unpredictable. He wants to win the turnover battle and minimize mistakes − particularly those that are self-inflicted.
But coming on the heels of 21 straight seasons at Utah − and 32 total including his time as the Utes' defensive coordinator − this is the most unique situation he's been in when entering a new campaign, he said Thursday, July 30, at Big Ten football media days.
That's because, above all, he knows there's one player set to wear maize and blue this fall who sits in the drivers seat.

Eddie Howe is expected to leave his role as Newcastle head coach less than a month before the start of the Premier League season.
Howe's impending departure was reported by outlets including the BBC and the Press **** ociation on Thursday.
He has been in charge of Newcastle for nearly five years and during that time ended the Saudi-backed club's decades-long wait for silverware.
Howe took charge of Newcastle's 4-1 preseason friendly loss to Bristol City on Wednesday, which may have been a pointer to a difficult campaign ahead following departures of star players this summer.
Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali have left during this transfer window and there is speculation captain Bruno Guimaraes could follow.

The Parkhead side have made two signings this summer - Camilo Duran and Kasper Hogh - for reported combined fees of around £15m.
However, talismanic forward Daizen Maeda has left to join Ipswich Town and O'Neill is keen to get high-calibre players through the door sooner rather than later.
Celtic have been linked extensively with Real Oviedo and Egypt winger Haissem Hassan as well as Paderborn midfielder Mika Baur.
"I think we're trying to get some quality into the football club," O'Neill told Sky Sports.

Boston Celtics big man Neemias Queta will be suiting up for his Portuguese National Team in FIBA World Cup play this summer in the qualifier window games set to go down in Europe, according to new reporting from Eurohoops Dot Net contributor Stefan Acevski.
Per the Eurohoops Dot Net reporter, Portugal finished their slate of games in the initial phase of the qualifier games with an overall record of 3-3, and is now waiting for the start of the second round of FIBA World Cup qualifying play. In the first segment of that play, they will take on the Spanish National Team on August 28 and play host to the Georgian National Team this August 31.
"The roster of 16 players for these matches has now been announced, with the standout name being Neemias Queta, who recently extended his contract," adds Acevski.
Coming off a season that saw the Lisbon native have the best regular season of his NBA career to date, only to stumble in postseason play, more high-leverage action for Queta ahead of Boston's looming 2026-27 regular season can only help his development.

A sickening injury to England's Gabriel Langton overshadowed his team's silver medal in the men's team gymnastics final at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The 19-year-old, from the City of Birmingham Gymnastics Club, needed lengthy treatment on the mat after a horrible fall in the final rotation of the evening at The Arena.
Langton fell head first to the floor after missing his catch on the horizontal metal bar, three metres in the air, leading to a lengthy delay to the action as he was tended to by up to a dozen medical staff.
He was eventually led away on a trolley after being moved on to a stretcher with his head and neck braced and left to huge applause from the packed crowd who had spent much of the previous 10 minutes in hushed silence.
Langton was seen to be conscious and moving his legs and arms before leaving the arena floor, while team officials later said he was moving and speaking to doctors.

The coaching world is a small one, and as the days go by, it continues to get smaller.
Every single guy is on a one-man mission to get to the top of the sport and become a head coach somewhere. For some, the grind is too much, but for others, they make a life out of it. Now, as the NFL is in a little bit of a transition phase to the young, braniac coaches, there is another layer of the coaching world that is getting exposed. The perfect example of this is with Todd Monken and the two guys the Ravens hired as their head coach and offensive coordinator.
Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken was on the Ryan Ripken Show and was asked what his actual thoughts are about the Ravens' decision. In typical Monken fashion, he told the truth and nothing but the truth.
"It's bulls---," Monken exclaimed. " I don't know if everyone knows this. My first year as a GA at Notre Dame... in '91, I GA'd with Declan Doyle's dad, Chris Doyle... My second year at Notre Dame, I moved to defense, and I was a GA for Rick Minter, Jessie Minter's dad. It really just means my a-- is old. But, the reality is, I've got a ton of respect for those guys. They are fantastic coaches."
"They are fantastic coaches and it's bullshit they're with the Ravens and we gotta play them twice a year. All this **** I talked to Declan about taking the job and now we're in the same **** division. I should've talked his **** out of it."

The Atlanta Falcons have been strangely quiet in the days leading up to training camp, but those around the NFL continue to churn out content at an alarming rate. Thanks to the Falcons' quarterback battle between Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa, the team has been a frequent topic of training camp preview lists.
In today's Falcons Wire Recap, ESPN and Bleacher Report weigh in on the quarterback competition, The Athletic ranks Atlanta among the NFL's most underrated teams, and second-year safety Xavier Watts makes CBS Sports' under-the-radar players list for 2026.
Bleacher Report's Alex Kay feels the Falcons' QB competition is leaning heavily in Tua Tagovailoa's direction as the team prepares to kick off training camp next week.
"While Miami was understandably ready to move on from Tua after two straight down years, the quarterback is still just 28 years old and should have plenty left in the tank for 2026," wrote Kay. "Tagovailoa gives new head coach Kevin Stefanski his best chance to hit the ground running and make Atlanta a top contender in a wide-open NFC South race. If Tua can avoid injury and establish a rapport with the likes of Drake London and Bijan Robinson in camp, Penix will be relegated to the bench in 2026."
ESPN's Ben Solak shared his two cents on Atlanta's QB1 battle, and despite predicting Tagovailoa would win the job, he feels Penix has the better chance at being the team's long-term starter.

Declan Rice is expected to start for England against Argentina, although it remains unclear whether the ******* nal midfielder will be able to play the full 90 minutes, let alone extra time if the World Cup semi-final goes the distance.
Rice has endured a demanding season, to say the least, and arrived at this tournament stuck together with tape.
He has been managing hamstring and back problems throughout the World Cup and, just before England's quarter-final against Norway, was also struck down by illness.
The midfielder started that match but was well below his usual standards before being substituted at half-time.

If there is a theme for this year's Boston Celtics squad at the NBA's 2026 Las Vegas Summer League, it has been growing together. From the prospect added to the roster at the last minute to the players on contract with Boston all the way up to Sin City Celtics head coach Amile Jefferson, putting work to do their respective job with the Summer Celtics has been the focus. "For me, it was just finding ways to keep coaching these guys and keep motivating them," said Jefferson via CLNS Media.
"Trying to make our habits stronger than being tired, stronger than being comfortable, stronger than playing a back-to-back," added the Celtics **** istant. "How can we find our habits and regain the poise to fight"
"We brought in some guys at the end of the game who just played with energy and brought those habits back (...)," said Jefferson. "And so as a coach, I think you're always trying to help the guys, no matter what point in the game it is and no matter what the score is."
As for the players, Jefferson saw plenty of growth as well. "It's awesome. You really get proud of those guys when they don't stop," he said. "Sometimes things don't go your way. Sometimes you can't make a shot. And at the end of the day, can you lean in ... on your habits and on the effort and on competitive spirit?"
"And even when it's not going well, can you find ways to make a play? And is that a deflection? Is it a steal? Is it an offensive rebound? I tell all our guys every day, everyone can offensive rebound. Everyone can sprint the floor. Everyone can play defense. So just trying to keep the guys in the right mindset, no matter what the score is."

Lightning has halted Sunday's NASCAR Cup Series race at EchoPark Speedway.
NASCAR displayed the caution flag on Lap 108 of the Quaker State 400 Available at Walmart after lightning moved into the area surrounding the 1.54-mile Georgia oval, bringing the race to a temporary stop under the sport's weather safety protocol.
The caution came as storms approached the speedway, forcing the field to slow while officials monitored conditions.
Unlike a traditional rain delay, NASCAR's lightning policy requires competition to be halted whenever lightning is detected within the sanctioning body's designated safety radius around the track.
Once the lightning protocol is activated, a mandatory 30-minute clock begins. If another lightning strike is detected before that timer expires, the countdown resets, extending the delay.
