Over time NFL teams tend to develop identities, and they often stay the same through different coaches, different quarterbacks and different front office regimes. For the Pittsburgh Steelers, their calling card has long been physical defense and getting to the quarterback paired with a potent run game.
That dynamic is at least half true going into the 2026 season. They ranked near the bottom of the NFL in rushing yards last year but remain an excellent pass-rushing team, finishing sixth with 48 last year.
Outside of the trenches, Pittsburgh's best skill player is former Seattle Seahawks star DK Metcalf, a rare athlete who the Atlanta Falcons are going to need to contain if they're going to upset the Steelers this week.
Last season Metcalf posted 59 catches, a team-high 860 receiving yards and six touchdowns - which was less than his usual production in Seattle, but it would be a mistake to write Metcalf off. The Seahawks' playoff loss to the 49ers a few years ago proves he can thrash even elite defenses, going off for 10 catches, 136 yards and two touchdowns.
For one thing, Metcalf is bigger, stronger and faster than any defensive back that Atlanta can put on the field. That means the Falcons have to be smarter about defending him.

We were granted our first opportunity to see whether the pairing of Brobbey and Isidor will or could work in the home match against Fulham.
It is hard to say definitively, but on the evidence of that short cameo, I'd suggest there is no reason to think it couldn't work.
Isidor, of course, firmly believes it could but a lot depends on the balance of the team and how the likes of Enzo le Fee and Nilson Angulo are deployed.
It may well be something Regis le Bris is happier to try at the Stadium of Light, where there is a greater emphasis on the home team attacking than in away matches.

Two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka emulated Serena Williams as she eventually overpowered American Taylor Townsend to reach a sixth straight US Open quarter-final.
A topsy-turvy contest featured 10 breaks of serve, but Sabalenka recovered from 3-1 down in the second serve to seal a 6-4 6-3 victory with a fifth consecutive game.
It was the Belarusian's 18th consecutive win at the tournament, extending her three-year unbeaten streak following back-to-back triumphs in 2024 and 2025.
Sabalenka, 28, is the first woman to reach six consecutive singles quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows since American great Williams in 2016.
Six-time champion Williams was also the last player to win three US Open ***** les in a row, and Sabalenka is now three wins from matching that feat.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Quarterback Josh Hoover came to Indiana knowing that in coach Curt Cignetti's program, toughness isn't optional.
He looked the picture of Hoosier grit as Indiana's new starter Saturday.
He threw four touchdown passes, had only three incompletions, finished with no turnovers and delivered an indelible image during Saturday's 52-16 victory over North Texas that is a lock to make this season's highlights — his bloodied face and chin strap, after an opponent yanked hard on his facemask.
Hoover never flinched.
"It feels good, I just got a little cut there," he said, referring to his injured nose. "It looked way worse than it felt. I didn't even know it was bleeding like that, so, yeah, I feel good. I think it did me a favor, though. It looked worse than it was, so they were like 'Hey, this guy's tough,' but it didn't really do anything."

The Imps have registered a loss and a draw on home soil so far this season.
Meanwhile, Saints are seeking their first away win this Championship campaign after also claiming just one point away from St Mary's.

PARIS – Dan Hooker is well aware of his current role in the UFC's lightweight division.
Hooker (24-14 MMA, 14-10 UFC) welcomes Salahdine Parnasse (23-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) to the octagon in Saturday's UFC Fight Night 287 main event at Accor Arena (Paramount+).
Hooker is currently on a two-fight losing skid, and will be facing Parnasse in enemy territory. While he put his hand up to potentially welcome Usman Nurmagomedov to the UFC, Hooker understands he's in a must-win situation this weekend.
"After a couple of losses and then moving your way down the rankings, I'm more than happy to play the role that I'm in right now and the role that I'm in right now is gatekeeping the top 10 of the UFC's lightweight division," Hooker said during Wednesday's UFC Fight Night 287 media day. "And I'm more than happy to play that role. Is that a position that defines my career? No, it's not. You get your hand raised, and then I'll be looking up at the rankings, and I'll be looking to get back in the mix and to get myself back to **** le contention.
"Yes, you're playing the role of a gatekeeper right now, but that doesn't define your career, the future of your career. The beauty of the sport is it can change in one single night. The Jacksonville Jaguars announced three practice squad additions on Tuesday.
The team has signed offensive lineman Eli **** , safety Kaevon Merriweather, and tight end Hayden Rucci.
To make room on the practice squad, the Jaguars released offensive lineman Jimto Obidegwu, who signed with the team as a UDFA following the 2026 NFL draft.
Cox went undrafted in 2025 and spent last season on the Houston practice squad. He was a very experienced collegiate player, making 47 starts.
Merriweather has NFL experience, appearing in 43 games since entering the NFL in 2023 as a UDFA. Most of his snaps have come on special teams.

COLLEGE STATION - Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko believes his team is good enough to compete. He knows the Aggies have to the talent to win football games.
But ahead of Saturday's 6 p.m. season opener at Kyle Field against Missouri State, Elko reiterated that the 2026 Texas A&M team has proven nothing yet on the field.
"Finally, we get to stop talking," Elko said during his Monday news conference. "Finally, we get to stop talking about what things can be, what things can be about and we get to run out of the tunnel and go play somebody else. It's beyond past the time to go do that."
Expectations are high for the Aggies in Elko's third season with a preseason ranking of No. 8 and coming off their best season in more than a decade. Last year's team, despite losing its last two games to Texas and then Miami in the College Football Playoff, won 11 games for only the third time in three decades.

Thibaut Courtois has urged Real Madrid to turn their dominant first-half performance against Malaga into the standard for the rest of the season, despite the goalkeeper acknowledging that the team lost some of its intensity after the break.
Real Madrid swept Malaga aside 4-0 at the Santiago Bernabéu, with three goals arriving before half-time as the hosts produced the kind of fast, aggressive football Courtois wants to see on a consistent basis.
Yet the Belgian was not completely satisfied. Speaking after the match, Courtois felt Madrid became too comfortable at times and allowed their opponents more possession and opportunities than they should have.
"The first half was very good; we scored three goals, but it's true that in the final minutes before half-time we sat too deep and allowed them to create a few chances.

Well, this is something to wake up to. According to The Athletic's David Ornstein, overnight Tottenham Hotspur and Everton reached an agreement to essentially swap attackers — bringing Ilman Ndiaye to Spurs, with Richarlison returning to Everton heading the other direction. This is NOT a true swap deal; these will be treated as separate transfers.
In yesterday's post-match press conference, Spurs head coach Roberto De Zerbi essentially told us that Richarlison asked to leave Spurs for a new challenge. I just didn't realize it would all go down so quickly. According to Paul Joyce of The Times, Ndiaye will cost Spurs about £60m, with Richarlison heading the other direction for a fee of £35m, making the outlay a lot lower than most transfers that Spurs have brought in this summer.
Ndiaye, 26, is a French fooballer who has declared for and plays international football for Senegal. He's been used primarily on the left wing for Everton, but can also play centrally or on the right. He's NOT a striker but could be implemented as a #10 if needed. Ndiaye likes to be on the ball and frequently prefers to take on and dribble past his defenders, which frequently turns into touches in the penalty area and shots. He likes to cut inside from the flank and is also comfortable receiving the ball deeper as a ball progression outlet. His acquisition means that Spurs will essentially only have three first team strikers on the books — Omar Marmoush, Dominic Solanke, and Dane Scarlett — but Ndiaye will fortify Spurs' attacking midfield options. His preferred position at Everton will put him in competition with Mathys Tel and Savinho, but his positional flexibility means he could be an ***** et elsewhere as well. He's also a willing presser and capable of putting in defensive work to make tackles. Despite maybe hinting otherwise yesterday, I'm kind of a fan of this deal.
As for Richarlison… well, I'm sad. He's probably my favorite Spurs player (non-Sonny edition) of this era. He's a vibes guy who always seemed to lift the mood, and it's clear he loved Spurs. But it's just as clear that he's not happy here anymore, and as his career starts to wind down a return to the club that lifted him to stardom feels like the closing of the circle. Everton fans love him as much as we do, and I can't begrudge them, or him, this move. It feels like the right choice.

Happy Saturday, folks! Hope you're having a nice weekend. If you decide to spend it watching late-night West Coast baseball, I hope the Orioles grace you with a series win tonight. They ******* ed a win in Game One last night with a 4-3 victory in ten innings. Although Brandon Young pitched a strong seven innings, the bullpen couldn't hold onto a meager 2-0 lead, and it took extras to sort things out: two clutch base hits by Coby Mayo and Christian Encarnacion-Strand gave the birds the winning margin of victory.
Let's hope the Orioles make Game Two worth staying up for. Tonight, taking the mound at Sacramento's Sutter Health Park for the Athletics is Jack Perkins, a 26-year-old righty who debuted for the A's in 2025, and has been used mostly as a swingman. In 11 starts and 20 relief appearances in 2026, he has an ugly 6.68 ERA, although it seems he's been the victim of bad defense, to judge by his FIP (4.79) and xERA (3.96). He's still been much more effective as a reliever, going by his ERA splits (4.76 ERA in relief/8.17 ERA as a starter). His best pitch is the sweeper, which generates a 36.1% whiff rate, followed by a decent changeup and cutter. The soft spot in Perkins' ******* nal is his mid-90s four-seamer: it's been his most hittable pitch by far (.318 average, .664 slugging against, Run Value -14), and he still throws it nearly a third of the time. Perkins is also ******* e to the long ball (1.69 HR/9) and to putting runners on via the walk (3.79 BB/9) or hit-by-pitch (9 on the year).
As for the O's starter, I don't know if it's crazy or reasonable to hope for a win, given that it's unlucky Shane Baz who takes his turn on the mound tonight. Despite the fact that Baz (4.04 ERA, 3.34 FIP) has allowed three or fewer runs in 19 of his 26 starts, he doesn't have a win in his last twelve starts (which is incredible to process). And he's been pretty good! He had a 3.68 ERA in June, a 3.00 one in July, and August, while slightly worse, shows him at a 4.30 mark. Poor Baz. Can the schneid please end tonight?
Tonight's lineup features a surplus of lefties. Jackson Holliday back in the leadoff spot, and Henderson, hopefully rested after his day off, hitting third. Dylan Beavers, hot lately, is back in, and so is Cowser playing center field. The newly activated Blaze Alexander is sitting today. However, Coby Mayo, slayer of lefties, is getting a start against the right-handed Perkins anyway, hitting seventh. And Pete Alonso, lately called our team's "iron man," is still out there, hitting, even with a sore calf.
Last night saw these Orioles ******* a game back from Cleveland's lead to put them just two games back of the third and final Wild Card spot. Earlier today, the lowly Royals did the Orioles a huge favor, pummeling the Guardians 8-3, which gives the team chance to make up yet another game! The next four games against the A's and the Rockies, whom the O's visit next, represent a best chance to make score some easy wins in the wild card race

The surplus of talent in the league is so high that teams have found themselves with an embarrassment of riches at the league's most dynamic position. The Detroit Lions don't often get thought of as one of the league's premier passing attacks, but this duo has quietly helped quarterback Jared Goff become one of the most consistent passers in the league. St. Brown has been one of the most lethal options in the slot in the league, if not the most lethal option, and Williams can take the top off any defense.
Williams' route running and some of the finer, more technical aspects of his game could use some refining, but even if he never improved, and he almost certainly will, he and his running mate are plenty dangerous enough as is.
Jefferson had what could be classified as a down year under the oppression of the Vikings' 2025 quarterback room. And by oppression, we mean he finished the campaign with 84 catches for 1,048 yards and two touchdowns. Addison missed time last year due to disciplinary action, but still had a solid year, catching 42 passes for 610 yards and three scores.

ASHLAND - You could just tell what opening Ohio Cardinal Conference play with a win meant to Ashland on Tuesday night.
Not only was a step in the right direction for the Arrows' goal this season — a league championship — but it came against rival Wooster, a team that has dominated the OCC for the last five years.
It was Ashland's first win over the Generals since Oct. 8, 2020 and the first time Wooster has been swept in league play since Aug. 28, 2018. The team that last did that? The Ashland Arrows.

Morgan Rogers has said it is an 'honour' to play alongside close friend Cole Palmer for Chelsea.
Rogers and Palmer lined up together for the first time as Chelsea teammates during the club's 3-2 win at Fulham on Monday night, with both players on the scoresheet as the Xabi Alonso era began with three points.
Rogers joined Chelsea in a £117m club record move from Aston Villa earlier this summer, reuniting with former Manchester City academy teammate Palmer.
The pair came through the ranks in City's youth set-up and have featured together for England at various age groups. However, Rogers said it is 'really nice' to reconnect at club level and is confident the two can have success together at Chelsea.

Semi Ajayi and ***** el Mendy scored the goals for Hull, who made their return to the top flight for the first time since 2017.
Not the start that Michael Carrick, now in charge on a permanent basis, wanted. The Red Devils were on the front foot and played some pretty possession football to start, but Hull's set-piece specialist Regan Slater had himself a day and set up both goals before halftime. First, it was a corner kick touched on and scrambled home by Ajayi, and then a brilliant free kick to the back post for Mendy redirect it home.
Hull City were virtually unanimously chosen to finish 20th this season, a decade on from their last stint in the PL, but Sergej Jakirovic's side looked anything but a newly promoted side overawed by the occasion. It was a true five-man backline for the Tigers but everyone does their part defensively. They have a few fantastic crossers in the team (from open play and dead ***** ), Oli McBurnie is still a tough-as-nails target man, and having three big center backs on the field at all times will make them a constant threat from set pieces.

Schmitz sees the roster as a blend of the offseason additions and the players who were already in the building when the new front office arrived in the spring. "You want a culture of competition, a healthy competition where guys are fighting for minutes and the level is raised," Schmitz said. "And I think you're going to see that with some of the depth that you mentioned, and making sure that every practice, every game, every shootaround, everything is incredibly competitive and there's something at stake. And so we feel like some of the additions we've made will help kind of foster that competitiveness, along with a lot of the guys who were on the roster when we got here."

The Baltimore Ravens have spent much of training camp adjusting to new voices, some in the huddle and many on the sideline. With that have come new expectations, but what else would you expect with a new coaching staff?
While the changes have touched every area of the roster, the Ravens spent two days testing themselves against one of the NFL's most aggressive defenses. Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores threw pressure packages, disguises, and coverages at Baltimore's offense that few teams can replicate.
Wide receiver Rashod Bateman believes one difference stands above the rest. It's year six for the former first-round selection, one representing the potential for a bounce-back. During a post-practice conversation with the Baltimore media, he shared a trait this Ravens team has that was foreign to other iterations of the team he has been part of.
"I would just say [we're] a very detail-oriented team. From head coach [Jesse Minter] to [offensive coordinator Declan Doyle] to [wide] receivers coach [Keary Colbert], everybody really harps on the details and the small things, and that's just not what we were in our past. I think, right now, we're just learning how to play fast, smart football. [We're] trusting the training, trusting the call [and] trusting our teammates. So, I think that's the difference right now, honestly. [We're] just building that team chemistry for sure."
Bateman's comments offered a revealing glimpse into why optimism has grown around Baltimore's offense. The Ravens aren't simply installing new schemes or learning new terminology. According to one of their veteran receivers, they're embracing a different level of detail, communication, and accountability.

Crystal Palace have struck an agreement with Chelsea to loan Axel Disasi (28), according to a report from RMC Sport.
Disasi has no future at Chelsea. The former AS Monaco defender has spent the past two seasons on short-term loans, firstly at Aston Villa and then with West Ham United. He suffered relegation with the latter last season. As was the case under Enzo Maresca, Liam Rosenior, and now Xabi Alonso, he does not feature in the manager's plans, and he is now primed for another loan exit, this time to Crystal Palace.
RMC Sport understands that an agreement has been reached for a paid loan, without a buy option. The arrival of the Frenchman at Selhurst Park would numerically replace the departure of his compatriot, Maxence Lacroix, who, having competed for Les Bleus at the FIFA World Cup, made the short journey across London to join Chelsea. Talks between Disasi's representatives and Crystal Palace are now ongoing.

João Palhinha's future at Bayern Munich continues to move toward a potential exit, with Aston Villa reportedly emerging as the midfielder's priority destination.
According to GiveMeSport's Ben Jacobs (via iMiaSanMia), Aston Villa remains in talks with Bayern Munich over a deal for Palhinha. Discussions have continued despite Bayern Munich initially proposing a loan arrangement without any commitment to make the transfer permanent.
However, Villa now understands that Bayern Munich are looking for greater certainty. The club will either have to complete a permanent transfer this summer or agree to an obligation to buy as part of a loan deal.

The situation could come down to how Aston Villa structures the deal. Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly and director Mark Walter are considering selling their stakes in the Premier League side to the club's majority owner Clearlake Capital, according to reports on Monday.
American billionaires Boehly and Walter were two of the investors who partnered with Clearlake to buy Chelsea from Roman Abramovich for £2.5 billion ($3.3 billion) in May 2022.
Private equity company Clearlake currently owns 62 percent of Chelsea, with Boehly and Walter holding the remaining shares with fellow investor Hansjorg Wyss.
Boehly, Walter and Wyss control 38 percent through Blueco Holdings.

It wasn't the news that the Arizona Cardinals wanted to hear, running back Jeremiyah Love, the star taken No. 3 overall out of Notre Dame may miss the rest of the preseason after suffering an ankle injury during Thursday's victory over the Oakland Raiders according to Adam Schefter.
The potential starter had a fantastic first showing, rushing for 58-yards on 11 carries with three catches for 14-yards. As with all preseason games, the top players don't get much run, so this was just a taste of what Love can do. Every trait that you want to see from a running back is there, as he used his spin move that wowed social media.
You have to wonder if the Cardinals made the right choice by sitting Love for its first preseason game, as head coach Mike LaFleur said following the contest that he is "a rookie that hadn't played much." Unfortunately, that is going to be the case for the next few weeks, as Love will be looked at again next week and then re-evaluated. The Cardinals are hopeful that he'll be ready to go for the season opener against the Los Angeles Chargers.

What is a conflict of interest anymore when it comes to play-by-play broadcasting? Last year, this was one of the more debated topics in sports media. Now, it has new life. Friday, the NFL announced that the "Tom Brady Rules" will also apply to ESPN Monday Night Football ****** yst Troy Aikman.
Tom Brady is a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders. He also is the lead ****** yst for FOX Sports NFL coverage. The rules, at first, were simple. He couldn't enter another team's facility or observe its practices. He also couldn't publicly criticize officials or other teams, and he couldn't attend broadcast production meetings either in person or virtually. Last year, good behavior by Brady — and likely some pressure from FOX Sports — relaxed the rules on Brady. This year, the rules extend to Troy Aikman.
But the NFL's explanation for why the extension to Aikman makes me wonder who these rules protect in the first place.
This past offseason, Aikman ****** isted the Miami Dolphins with hiring a new general manager and head coach. During a podcast episode featuring former WFAA sports anchor Dale Hansen, Aikman said his role with the Dolphins was approved by Commissioner Roger Goodell. He has also stated that he sees a day when he could be working for an NFL franchise in some capacity.
The two situations are different. Brady owns a minority stake, so he's financially invested in the success of a franchise. Aikman loaned his services but doesn't have a financial stake in the Miami Dolphins' success.
