Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears enjoyed an incredible offensive performance in their 59-37 win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday afternoon. However, they are keeping their eye on the ball with some issues they must address as the 2026 campaign is underway.
Williams filled up the stat sheet as he enjoyed his activity in the offense. He completed 21 out of 29 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns while racking up 10 rushes for 65 yards and two touchdowns.
Williams reflected on the performance after the game, per reporter Chris Emma. He surprisingly said this game will be the team's worst as he anticipates stronger displays throughout the coming weeks this year.
"That's who we want to be this week. We got to go clean up. We want to be truthers. Obviously, this is going to be our kind of worst game. I know points don't necessarily show that, but execution, the blocking, the penalties, all these different things," Williams said.

Another season begins with the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants battling each other to start 1-0 in the NFC East race. Lately it's been the Cowboys getting the wins, especially when Dak Prescott is under center.
Things have a way of getting turned around when it comes to rivalries. Despite the Cowboys owning the matchups in the last 10 years, the Giants could be primed to make things more difficult. New York has made some significant changes this offseason that will challenge the Cowboys.
Here are three reasons to hate playing the Giants on Sunday night football to open the season.
Despite dominating the games between the two teams recently, the Cowboys need to be wary of a Giants team that's turned over their franchise to a Super Bowl winning coach. John Harbaugh arrives with a winning pedigree and a 4-1 record against the Cowboys, who have been feasting on poor coaches in New York since Tom Coughlin left.
The Giants' culture has changed with Harbaugh's arrival, and the first matchup with a new regime always brings surprises. Harbaugh's a veteran coach, but he hired Matt Nagy as his offensive coordinator, with whom he's never worked with as his OC, and Dennard Wilson is a first-time defensive coordinator. That can make for the Cowboys seeing some things they haven't seen from the Giants on both sides of the ball.

Saints manager Craig Harrison was sent off as his side consolidated their place at the top of the Cymru Premier table.
The visitors were already two goals ahead - through first-half efforts from Daniel Williams and Rory Holden - by the time Harrison earned the wrath of the match officials early in the second period. Saints stay top while Airbus held on to eighth spot.
The tale of the table did not lie as Caernarfon eased to a thumping victory in south west Wales to move third.
Phillip Mooney and Sion Bradley putting them 2-0 up by the break before Ammanford's Lucas Davies saw red.
Bradley added their third from the penalty spot before Mooney also grabbed a second and Harri Wyn completed their scoring as they left winless Ammanford to lick their wounds and down in 15th place.

Liverpool are reportedly set to lose a talented prospect from their academy to one of their biggest rivals.
The Reds have made a happy habit of acquiring prodigious gems from the underage setups of other clubs across the UK, with Harvey Elliott (Fulham), Rio Ngumoha (Chelsea) and Trey Nyoni (Leicester) among the standout examples in recent years.
However, the shoe is now on the other foot as a certain club from along the M62 put the final touches on the signing of an up-and-coming talent from Merseyside.
On Monday evening, Fabrizio Romano took to X to report that Manchester United have completed a deal to sign Liverpool academy midfielder Isaac Konde, with the Italian including his trademark 'here we go'.
The 16-year-old is 'all set' to join the Red Devils after 'formal steps' were completed over the past couple of days.

Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter received record-setting contract extensions this offseason, but neither defensive tackle views financial security as a reason to become comfortable. During his appearance on "Takeoff with John Clark," Davis spoke strongly about a close-knit Eagles defensive line that holds its members accountable before position coach Clint Hurtt needs to intervene.
That approach extends to conditioning.
Vic Fangio challenged Davis to improve his conditioning after arriving in Philadelphia, and the results were evident during Davis' breakout 2025 season. Fangio also established a target weight for Carter, who arrived for mandatory minicamp in improved shape. Davis said Fangio remains involved throughout the offseason, occasionally calling players to ask about their workouts and progress. Head coach Nick Sirianni shares that commitment because both coaches understand how conditioning can affect performance late in games and deep into the season.
The responsibility does not stop with Davis and Carter. Moro Ojomo, Ty Robinson and the other defensive linemen exchange observations and accept coaching from one another regardless of experience or draft status.
That willingness to listen has helped create one of Philadelphia's closest position groups.

Vikings' J.J. McCarthy decision changes meaning of his former franchise-QB label originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Minnesota Vikings insist they have not given up on J.J. McCarthy. Their depth chart tells a more complicated story.
Minnesota general manager Nolan Teasley reaffirmed the organization's belief in McCarthy this week and said he expects the former first-round pick to remain with the Vikings. McCarthy currently projects behind Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz after another injury-disrupted offseason, according to the New York Post.
That is an extraordinary position for a quarterback selected 10th overall only two years ago. It does not necessarily mean his opportunity has ended.
Minnesota originally drafted McCarthy as its possible long-term answer. A torn meniscus erased his rookie season before it began. Ankle and concussion issues then limited him to 10 games last year, preventing the Vikings from receiving a clean evaluation of his development.

Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the MLB. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Giants fans and fans across the country.
It's been an awful season for the San Francisco Giants, but there have been a lot of opportunities to reminisce. In July, the team drafted Peyton Bonds. A few weeks later, they traded for Kaeden Kent. Earlier this week, they signed Darren Baker.
And of course, in late July, Jeff Kent was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
The Giants honored Kent, the five-time All-Star and 2000 league MVP, with a ceremony on Saturday. And while addressing the crowd, a notably softened and more family-friendly Kent embraced his former frenemy Barry Bonds, and commented on how Bonds could still get into the Hall of Fame some day.
It is, of course, absurd that Bonds is not in the Hall, and for now his pathways are closed. But pathways can always change, especially for such an arbitrary institution.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Tacko Fall is back in the NBA.
The Philadelphia 76ers announced on Tuesday that they have invited the towering 7-foot-6 Fall to training camp later this month.
Fall, 30, last played in the NBA with Cleveland during the 2021-22 season. He's spent the last four years playing internationally, averaging 11.2 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.1 blocks in 18.1 minutes while competing in China and New Zealand.
The Senegal native played in 37 games for Boston and Cleveland from 2020-22.
The Sixers, who signed LeBron James and traded for Jaylen Brown in the offseason, are inexperienced at center behind Joel Embiid, with 23-year-old Adem Bona and 24-year-old Ariel Hukporti as the other two centers on the roster.

Lazio are seemingly in the market for another striker as they continue to monitor free agents Mauro Icardi and Joselu.
The Biancocelesti announced Andrea Pinamonti's arrival on Friday, but with Petar Ratkov reportedly on his way to joining Levante, and Boulaye Dia said to be close to Stade Rennais, a second new centre-forward could be required at Gennaro Gattuso's court.
In recent weeks, Icardi has been occasionally linked with the Italian capital side. The former Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain bomber has been unattached since leaving Galatasaray in June. On Monday, Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla revealed that Lazio have launched a new attempt to recruit the 33-year-old over the past few days, but have yet to receive a definitive answer.
In an interview with Sky Sport Italia (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), Icardi's lawyer, Letterio Pino, confirmed the Aquile's interest in his client.
We're evaluating the best plan with Mauro, a lifestyle plan, not a financial one. Mauro wants to choose a beautiful city and a strong club. Lazio is actively pursuing him, and it's an option we're considering.

NFL All-Overpaid team: Zay Flowers, Deshaun Watson headline players with worst contracts originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The NFL is all about value.
As a salary-capped league, front offices only have so much flexibility to work with each season. And while that salary cap has skyrocketed over the years, now at $301.2 million per team for the 2026 season, markets have been dictated by positional value. Superstar quarterbacks and pass rushers come at a premium, running backs have been seeing somewhat of a financial resurgence after years of struggles, while special teams players are usually given whatever is left over.
Like any sports league, however, there are some players who don't provide their franchises the kind of value their significant contracts would indicate, especially compared to their positional peers. Whether due to injuries, poor performance or off-the-field issues, an inflated contract can handicap an NFL team, and there are plenty of them across the league.
Here's a look at The Sporting News' All-Overpaid team entering the 2026 NFL season.

The Bundesliga is back! On Matchday 1, Freiburg host Werder Bremen in an exciting opening fixture for both sides. Goalkeeper Mio Backhaus (and potentially Eren **** çi as well) will face his former club, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the matchup.
Julian Schuster's side will be looking to improve on last season and push for a return to the European places, with a Europa League spot potentially within reach. Bremen, meanwhile, have one primary objective: survival. After a shaky 2025/26 campaign that saw them finish 15th, Werder will be hoping to take a step forward this season - with Niclas Füllkrug expected to play a key role in their ambitions.
Who will come out on top in this match? With just about an hour to go until kickoff, here are the confirmed lineups for both sides:
SC Freiburg (4-2-3-1): Backhaus - Kübler, Ginter, Lienhart, Makengo - Eggestein, Engelhardt - Beste, Suzuki, Scherhant - Matanović
Werder Bremen (4-3-3): Hein - Schmetgens, Pieper, Friedl, Deman - Chuky, Reis, Lynen - Njinmah, Füllkrug, Grüll

USC debuted its latest concession stand item, which could take over the College Football landscape: the Trojan Beer Sword.
The item is meant to consume its namesake, letting fans pour their beer of choice into the top and fill it up.
It has a red plastic handle with a vertical sword grip, while the "blade" is a clear plastic tube that looks quite long and features the infamous USC logo.
Rather than the top of the sword being round, it is shaved off to be quite pointy, allowing the drinker to put their mouth on the tip and tilt it up for easy consumption.

The stakes are high as one of the great rivalries in baseball is renewed tonight in the Bronx. The Yankees (75-58) and the Red Sox (73-60) are each making the playoffs. Neither is out of the division race but the more obvious race is for the top Wild Card spot. The Yankees currently hold the top spot with the Sox sitting two games behind. Boston trails the Bronx Bombers by just two games for that top Wild Card spot. The fact that there is any intrigue in that race is remarkable considering that on July 1 the Red Sox were 10 games UNDER .500 and the Yankees were 11 games OVER .500.
The Red Sox arrive in the Big Apple after winning two of three in Miami. The Red Sox opened the series with a 4-2 victory before grinding out a dramatic 7-3 win in 11 innings in Game 2. The Marlins avoided a sweep with a 4-0 shutout of the Sox on Wednesday. New York takes the field tonight after losing two of three to Houston. The Yankees' bats were alive in splitting the first two games but went silent in a 5-1 loss last night.
Patrick Sandoval (1-2, 4.54 ERA) gets the ball for Boston tonight. After allowing seven runs to the Pirates back on August 16, the veteran rebounded last Saturday against the Giants allowing two runs over five innings. Overall, the Red Sox have won six of his eight starts. The Yankees counter with Cam Schlittler (11-6, 2.16 ERA). The Cy Young favorite has been dominant nearly every time he has taken the mound this season. In his most recent start, Schlittler allowed but one run over six innings against the Blue Jays. Despite his consistently elite numbers, Schlittler has seen the Yankees lose four of his last five starts as the Pinstripes rarely offer him much in the form of run support.
This four-game series is certain to have a playoff atmosphere surrounding it as each side looks to further cement a playoff spot and continue to try to chase down the Rays in the AL East.
Lets dive into tonight's matchup and find a sweat or two.

Aaron Judge has missed most of the season, but the New York Yankees are close to getting him back in the lineup.
Judge has been recovering from a fractured rib and has not played since May 31. He has started taking swings, but has yet to face velocity. However, he hopes to avoid a rehab ****** ignment before returning.
"I didn't rehab in '23 when I missed probably the same amount of time," Judge told MLB.com's Bryan Hoch on Thursday. "Why waste at-bats? Why waste anything down in a Minor League game? I've been doing this for a while now, and I've got a sense of what I need to do on the field and how to manage it."
Judge is a three-time MVP, and he should not need much time to get his timing back. Live batting practice and the Trajekt machine should provide him with enough at-bats against velocity for him to get back in the lineup without needing a rehab ****** ignment.

Brahim Diaz's complete absence from Real Madrid's opening-day win over Espanyol raised plenty of questions, especially after the midfielder had been among the more heavily used players during pre-season.
Jose Mourinho chose Jude Bellingham in his starting XI and kept Brahim on the bench.
Even when changes were made after the break, the Moroccan attacker did not get his chance, with Yan Diomande handed his debut instead.
For some, the decision raised doubts over Brahim's role in Mourinho's plans for the 2026/27 season, but the player has taken a very different view of the situation.
According to Defensa Central, Brahim is not angry with Mourinho and has accepted the coach's decision.

Ben Stokes claims the ECB's decision to leave Headingley off the men's Ashes 2027 schedule is "shambolic".

And former England captain Stokes was left furious with the reality of no Ashes Test in Leeds.

The debate comes after England captain Joe Root, admitted it is a "shame" to not see Headingley part of next year's schedule, particularly given the strong home record there.

The new European season begins only a few weeks after the World Cup, leaving many clubs with less preparation than usual. Some squads have barely changed. Others have spent heavily or reshaped key positions during the transfer window. Fitness is another unknown after a demanding international summer. Those differences often matter most before the table begins to settle. They also influence premier league betting, where early prices do not always keep pace with changes inside a squad.
The Premier League starts on 21 August, with ****** nal opening the season against Coventry City as defending champions.
Several clubs look noticeably different from last spring. Chelsea and Manchester City have invested heavily in midfield. Liverpool enter the campaign after parting with several long-serving players. ****** nal face a different challenge this time. Protecting first place usually brings more pressure than chasing it.
Preparation has not been equal across the league. Clubs with large World Cup contingents have had less time together, while others completed a much calmer pre-season. The gap may become visible during the first few rounds.
La Liga is expected to begin around 15 August. Real Madrid and Barcelona again dominate the ****** le discussion. Atlético Madrid remain close behind, while several clubs further down the table have strengthened without making major changes.Spain's international players return after a long summer, leaving little time before domestic football resumes. Arguably the greatest coach in UNC men's basketball history, Roy Williams still delivers a lasting impact on his longtime program today.
That impact includes playing a large role in North Carolina hiring its now-head coach, Michael Malone, who spent 12 seasons as an NBA boss.
During a Tuesday interview with college basketball insider Jon Rothstein, Malone revealed he turned down the Tar Heels' job three times before talking to Ol' Roy.
"Coach Williams had a lot to do with me taking this job," Malone said via Tar Heel Tribune's R.L. Bynum. "I like to say I turned the job down three times, and I felt finally at peace about that, and I was going to stay in the NBA and continue my NBA journey. And I had a couple of great conversations with Hall of Famer Coach Roy Williams, and I had just met him. I just got to know him, but I feel like I've known him for years. Coach Williams has that kind of impact on you."
Williams won 485 games across his 18 seasons at UNC's head coach, highlighted by the 2005, 2009 and 2017 National Championships. Upon stepping down, Williams turned his program over to longtime ****** istant Hubert Davis, whom North Carolina fired shortly after its latest NCAA Tournament disappointment.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- While Michigan football had a standout true freshman wide receiver in Andrew Marsh a year ago, JJ Buchanan was breaking out at Utah.
Yes, Marsh ended up leading all Wolverines receivers while Buchanan placed third, but early returns in fall camp are that Buchanan is taking a big step forward. On the heels of a solid first year, where he switched from tight end to receiver somewhere around Week 3, Buchanan had 26 catches for 427 yards and five touchdowns. And from the looks of it, he's taking things a step further in fall camp, challenging to be potentially the top target for the maize and blue.
His position coach, Micah Simon, says that a lot of what happened last year has helped propel him this year, given his familiarity with Kyle Whittingham, Jason Beck, and Simon himself.
"One, just brings a familiarity with the offense, obviously," Simon said. "Being in it last year. And then he just brings a strong presence. He's really worked on his leadership, which is one of the things I challenged him with is obviously, he's a true sophomore. He's 19 years old. But he played a bunch of snaps last year, and he has that experience. And he's made a lot of plays thus far in spring and camp right now where guys look up to him. So just bringing that leadership and showing how things should be done.
"And in the receiver room, we talk about less drama, more work. And that's exactly who that kid is. I mean, you never have to worry about anything with him. He's just all ball. He takes care of his classes. He's great off the field. And that's -- obviously, he's a good player. But that's what else he brings to the room, which is awesome."
