The Washington Commanders were inconsistent on offense during Sunday's 24-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, just as many anticipated, but fans got to see one player exceed the expectations that a large portion of the public had set for him. After getting roasted for a perceived lack of strength during preseason play, which was captured via video, rookie linebacker Sonny Styles displayed eye-catching power in Philly.
The former Ohio State star bowled over 2024 Offensive Player of the Year Saquon Barkley before sacking Super Bowl 59 MVP Jalen Hurts. Retired offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz was quick to taunt the doubters following the thunderous play.
"So maybe that preseason week 1 'film review' mocking Styles wasn't indicative of how he might play in the regular season," the NFL ******* yst and podcast host quipped.

A 24-year-old man accused of taking part in a series of high-end home break-ins in the Philadelphia suburbs appeared in a Montgomery County courtroom Thursday.
Jabir Hanif Parker is accused of burglarizing homes from June through August, focusing on master bedrooms and closets in search of expensive jewelry, watches and other valuables.
Investigators say the cases involve three residential burglaries and an attempted burglary at the home of Eagles star Saquon Barkley in Malvern.
Two homeowners were home during the incidents, including Barkley and his family, while two were not.
Authorities say the crimes were sophisticated and appeared to involve planning.

The regular season always brings surprises. Training camp stars don't always become September stars, and preseason momentum can disappear quickly once games begin to count. Still, several Philadelphia Eagles enter Week 1 trending in the right direction.
Veterans are settling into larger roles. Newcomers are earning trust. Young players are building on strong offseason performances. Philadelphia has plenty of reasons to be optimistic. They're preparing for their season opener against the Washington Commanders. Here are a handful of cornerstone pieces looking to build on some spring and summertime momentum.
Neither receiver is likely to challenge DeVonta Smith, Dontayvion Wicks, Dallas Goedert, or Saquon Barkley for featured roles in the offensive attack. Both, however, have done enough to earn attention heading into Week 1.
Cooper flashed relatively early. Brown came on later and put together one of his strongest stretches of the offseason, consistently finding ways to get open while producing whenever opportunities came his way.
The Eagles are confident they have reliable depth behind their top receiving options. Targets may be limited, but both receivers appear capable of making meaningful contributions when their numbers are called.

The man charged in the attempted burglary of Eagles running back Saquon Barkley's home has now been charged in another burglary.
Officials say he is now connected to at least four burglaries.
Jabir Parker, 24, was scheduled to appear before a judge on Thursday but that hearing got postponed.
However, investigators now say Parker, along with two or three other unnamed suspects, stole cash, $80,000 in jewelry, and about $10,000 worth of handbags from a house in Haverford Township, Delaware County, on August 20.
Parker is also accused of breaking into Barkley's home in Chester County, back in July.

The NFL season is less than a week away from kicking off, beginning a new quest for Super Bowl LXI. There will also be a number of players under the microscope as fantasy football managers look to win their leagues.
One of those players some league managers are banking on to bounce back in a major way is Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley. After a historic run in 2024, Barkley took a step back in 2025. In the grand scheme of things, the Eagles offense did as well.

Running back Jaydon Blue, who the Cowboys waived on Sunday, is signing with the Eagles' practice squad, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
The Cowboys drafted Blue in the fifth round in 2025, but he was a healthy scratch for 12 games as a rookie. He totaled 38 carries for 129 yards and a touchdown.
Coach Brian Schottenheimer noted Blue's growth in maturity in 2026, though it was not enough to keep his roster spot.

Now that the Philadelphia Eagles' preseason schedule is over, the team's focus shifts to cutting their roster down to the regular season 53-player limit before the 6:00 PM Eastern deadline on Sunday, August 30. Here's our best effort at projecting what the INITIAL roster is going to look like. The Birds will likely make some tweaks (injured reserve placements, trades, waiver claims, etc.) before they actually play the Washington Commanders in Week 1. Note that this activity is about predicting what the Eagles WILL do as opposed to what we necessarily think they should do.

Hurts threw a lot of interceptions this summer, yes, but I challenge you to find a daily practice observer who feels like he had a bad camp. On the whole, the good outweighed the bad. It seems like he's embracing the new offensive direction. The Eagles are hoping Hurts doesn't get, well, hurt … because the depth behind him is very uninspiring. There was no clear winner from the Eagles' training camp backup quarterback battle. McKee somehow looked worse than ever after previously showing encouraging signs in previous years. Dalton looks somewhat physically diminished, which tracks for a quarterback entering his age 39 season. Maybe he gets traded … but what price is he even fetching at this point? I wonder if the Eagles might trade both Dalton (for very meager draft pick compensation) AND McKee (included in a deal for another team's quarterback, such as Anthony Richardson or J.J. McCarthy)? Payton has shown some promise but the Eagles didn't really do a good job of getting him more action in the preseason. Utilizing him on special teams in the final preseason game points to them trying to find a role for him. This is a tough position to figure out.

The conversation surrounding the Philadelphia Eagles' offense usually begins with familiar names. Jalen Hurts is learning Sean Mannion's new system. DeVonta Smith is the unquestioned WR1 in the passing game. Saquon Barkley remains one of the NFL's most dangerous offensive weapons.
Even Mannion himself has become a popular topic. Fans and **** ysts are attempting to determine what Philadelphia's offense will look like when the regular season begins. Meanwhile, one of the most important figures in that entire operation rarely becomes the center of the discussion. Ironically, he's the anchor of the offensive line.
Cam Jurgens spoke with reporters following the Eagles' final training camp practice on Wednesday, and one of the most encouraging developments of Philadelphia's summer had little to do with scheme, personnel packages, or play design. For the first time in a while, Jurgens feels healthy.
"I feel like every week it's been making improvements. I'm really happy with where I'm at. Heading into the season, I feel like I'm in a lot better spot than I was last year."
That statement carries more significance than it might appear. This time last year, Jurgens was attempting to build on a breakout campaign while managing the lingering effects of back surgery and the physical and obvious wear that followed.

Not much was going right for the Chicago Bears in their 27-9 preseason loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. However, one thing they were able to do well was contain the Bengals' rushing attack.
In fact, Cincinnati was held to just 64 yards on 20 attempts, an average of just 3.2 yards per attempt. Head coach Ben Johnson said the success in run defense was a combination of multiple things including the linebackers, players in the secondary being active in stopping the run and gap integrity.
"We're just trying to get out of our stance and strike blocks," Johnson said. "Our linebackers are doing a good job communicating and filling gaps, and we have our little guys that are willing tacklers. I think they're doing a good job tackling in ******* e for the most part through two games so far."
Seeing Chicago find success defending the run was promising, especially for a game where the Bears struggled so much in every other area. Last season, the Bears were one of the worst run defenses in the league, allowing an average of five yards per carry, which was the fourth-worst in the NFL.
If there is one positive takeaway from the Bears' preseason game against the Bengals, it is that Chicago has depth pieces on the defense that can help stop the run which will be important for them this season as they have to face elite running backs such as Saquon Barkley with the Philadelphia Eagles, Bijan Robinson with the Atlanta Falcons, Jahmyr Gibbs twice with the Detroit Lions and James Cook with the Buffalo Bills.

Barkley said after a joint practice with the Patriots that he dislikes the way hot-headed players don't control themselves in joint practices and are more interested in refusing to back down from someone in a different-colored jersey than in getting better.
"I hate joint practice, to be honest. I think one day is good, but we play in an ego-filled sport with a lot of men, and I'm all about just putting the work in," Barkley said. "I'm not really a fan of joint practice. More times than not, nothing good comes out of it. Like you have the work, it's good but then you get to pushing, the shoving and someone says this about you and it's immature when we get to that level. I've got to do a better job too because I'm a little troublemaker sometimes, but I was a good this week."
Barkley said players should be able to walk away from that stuff.
"Football is a physical game, and it's just a little extra pushing and shoving, but we've got to do a better job of not allowing that to have a factor in our practice," Barkley said.

Saquon Barkley was among a group of running backs who took part in a Zoom call in 2023 to discuss the depressed market for their position.
As recently as last season, Barkley was the only running back averaging more than $20 million annually. Bijan Robinson, Jahmyr Gibbs and Jonathan Taylor have all signed deals recently that put them at $22 million or more per season.
Barkley, who has an annual average of $20.6 million, ranks below all three now.
"I love it. That's how it's supposed to be," Barkley said Thursday, via Zach Berman of TheAthletic.com. "Christian [McCaffrey] did it before me. I did it after Christian. And now we have three in a row. I look forward to the next guys to do it. It was like that for every other position besides running back. You can see that coming back to life. Those guys are very deserving of it. They're ***** uva players, make a lot of impact in games for their teams. Their teams are different when they're not on the field. Hopefully in the next 5-10 years, it keeps going higher. That's how it's supposed to go."

The Eagles are acclimating themselves to a new offense this offseason and right tackle Lane Johnson thinks it is going to suit one of the team's top players quite well.
Wednesday's joint practice with the Patriots gave offensive coordinator Sean Mannion a chance to call plays for the starting offense and provided a glimpse into how the team will use running back Saquon Barkley. One of those uses will be as a receiver and Johnson believes that giving him the ball like that will provide an opportunity for Barkley to get back to the 2024 production that made him the league's offensive player of the year.
"The more productive we are in the run game and stuff feeds off that, we'll see the Saquon from two years ago," Johnson said. "We'll see the big plays, we'll see him flexing out wide at wide receiver, we'll see him in the screen game."
Mannion's scheme will be significant, obviously, but having Johnson and the rest of the offensive line healthy this year would also set the stage for Barkley to dominate defenses the way he did on his way to 2,283 yards from scrimmage in 2024. That season ended in a Super Bowl win and having everything come together offensively should make the Eagles a threat to repeat that feat as well.

There was nothing particularly encouraging about the Philadelphia Eagles' preseason opener, except for the fact that it's... well... the preseason... The long -awaited debut of Sean Mannion's offense was an exercise in patience. Moving the football was a struggle. Penalties repeatedly put the unit behind schedule. Andy Dalton and Tanner McKee both struggled to find any consistent rhythm.
That doesn't mean Sean Mannion's offense is headed for trouble. In fact, every lesson learned in the loss against the Baltimore Ravens may have been exactly what should be expected from an offensive unit that's still learning. No team wants to tip its hand in Week 1, especially an Eagles team that keeps its cards close to the vest. Then, it must be mentioned that many of the best players weren't on the field.
The Eagles finished the game with just 159 total yards and six first downs in a 24-7 loss. They managed only two first downs through their first nine possessions and didn't score until the fourth quarter, when most of the players on the field were unlikely to be part of Philadelphia's Week 1 plans.
That's ugly, but again, it's preseason. The Eagles weren't going to unveil the full version of their new attack in Baltimore. Mannion is installing concepts centered on under-center formations, motion, play-action, and outside-zone principles, but there's little reason to put an entire playbook on film when the games don't count.
Jalen Hurts didn't play. Saquon Barkley didn't play. Neither did Dallas Goedert. Much of the starting offensive line remained on the sideline, and the quarterback competition behind Hurts took center stage instead. That's a difficult environment in which to judge a new offense. Timing matters in any system, and it becomes even more important when players are learning new terminology, route combinations, blocking ****** ignments and reads.

According to Fantasy Sports on SI's Gray Devo, Smith-Niigba is the ideal player to select with the No. 6 overall pick in 12-man fantasy football PPR league drafts.
"Njigba in 2025 had 119 receptions for 1,793 yards and 10 TDs," Devo said. "There is upside for him to have even a better season in fantasy this year with Seattle losing one of their biggest offensive weapons in the 2026 offseason, RB Kenneth Walker III. With his departure, even more offensive responsibility could fall on him."

Jihaad Campbell popped off the screen in the early portion of the scrimmage. The linebacker completely knocked Jurgens on his rear on an early run play. Later, Campbell fended off Steen at the second level and touched up running back Saquon Barkley. On the next play, he two-hand touched tight end Dallas Goedert after a sliding catch. I counted three more run plays in which Campbell was involved during the set. He did get washed out by Jurgens at one point. And in the "backed-up" period, he hesitated on a run blitz, and Barkley simply cut to the left and ran through the vacated gap. Zack Baun was equally impressive. He made the stop on Barkley's first tote. He often teamed up with Campbell on other run stops. Baun also intercepted quarterback Jalen Hurts on a deflected pass in a two-minute drill. He correctly anticipated a later throw and nearly had another pick, but receiver Elijah Moore somehow escaped with the catch.

PHILADELPHIA − Jalen Carter might be flush with a new contract that so far is the biggest for a defensive tackle in NFL history when he signed his four-year extension worth as much as $152 million on July 29.
It hasn't taken long for Carter to show why the Eagles are shelling out all of that money in a contract that keeps Carter signed through the 2031 season, when he will be 30 years old.

If he can prove capable of contributing as a receiver, Bigsby becomes more than Barkley's primary backup. He becomes a more complete offensive option who can stay on the field in a wider variety of situations without tipping the play call. He tracks as one of the most important pieces of the Eagles' offensive machine this season.
That versatility would only strengthen an offense that already features one of the NFL's deepest collections of skill-position talent. It also aligns with Philadelphia's broader objective of managing Barkley's workload.

Five former Penn State football stars have been named among the greatest college football players.
The Sporting News released a College Football All-America Teams by Decades listing this week as the Nittany Lions open fall camp in preparation for the 2026 season.
The Lions who made the cut: Tight end Ted Kwalick (1960s), linebacker Shane Conlan (1980s), offensive lineman Sean Farrell (1980s), linebacker LaVar Arrington (1990s) and running back Saquon Barkley (2010s).
Kwalick, Conlan and Arrington are college football hall of famers. All were first-team All-Americans during their careers.
Of course, the piece does not include the 1950s, which featured PSU hall of fame quarterback Richie Lucas and superstar running back Lenny Moore, who Joe Paterno called the greatest player he ever coached.

Saquon Barkley saw a clip of Barry Sanders on NFL Films when he was a kid that left a lasting impression.
It wasn't Sanders juking half the defense on one of his dynamic touchdown runs. Instead, the Hall of Fame running back who inspired a generation of running backs with his sensational, elusive, shifty style was walking up and down the sideline handing out refreshments to his teammates.
"They were talking about how great of a player he was but they had a clip of him holding Gatorade cups and he's walking down," Barkley said on the AP's "On Football" podcast. "He is going to his teammates and just the way that he carried himself. So I would say I have to give my flowers to him there."
Barkley joined Sanders as one of nine players to rush for 2,000 yards in a season in 2024 when he was the AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year and helped the Philadelphia Eagles win the Super Bowl.
Barkley demonstrated he's a team-first player by sitting out the final regular-season game when he needed 101 yards to break Eric **** erson's record. Earlier in the season, he told coach Nick Sirianni to let other backs get some carries after he had already rushed for 176 yards against his former Giants teammates and needed 14 more in the fourth quarter to set a new career-high.

One major domino fell toward a new long-term deal for Detroit Lions superstar running back Jahmyr Gibbs.
Two-time Pro Bowler Bijan Robinson reached agreement on a three-year extension with the Atlanta Falcons worth up to $75 million that will make him the highest-paid running back in NFL history. Robinson will receive $51 million guaranteed and the Falcons star will now make $22.25 million per year, surpassing the Philadelphia Eagles' Saquon Barkley ($20.6 million) as the highest-paid running back in average per year.
Throughout this offseason, many have felt that Gibbs and Robinson's extensions would be linked to one another as both look to reset the running back market with new deals. Now that Robinson's deal has been finalized, will that help expedite Gibbs' new deal?
Lions head coach Dan Campbell was asked on Tuesday morning if he thought Robinson's extension could help Gibbs and Detroit get to the finish line on a new deal.
"I mean, I think it's certainly not going to hurt. It's not going to hurt. But, we'll see. Look, I'm anxious to get Gibbs back out there. Every day that goes by, that's another day that you feel like you missed with him and getting him out there with the guys and him doing his part. But, there again, it'll get done when it gets done," Campbell said.
