Freight broker Landstar System said Tuesday that its larger scale and long track record of safety will become more attractive to shippers in a post-Montgomery world. The company saw a more material turnaround in operations during the second quarter even though results fell short of ****** ysts' expectations.
Revenue generated by Landstar's (NASDAQ: LSTR) business capacity owners (BCOs) increased 22% year over year to $563 million, as loads were up 10% and revenue per load was up 11%. Landstar's BCOs are owner-operators who haul almost exclusively for the company. Changes among this segment of capacity have historically signaled turns in the broader truckload market.
Trucks provided by BCOs increased 68 units sequentially to 8,544 units in the second quarter. This was the largest increase since the 2022 first quarter. The tractor count is up another 49 units so far in July. BCO turnover improved 310 bps y/y to 28.3% as utilization improved 12% y/y.
BCO revenue per mile—Landstar's preferred metric for TL pricing as it excludes fluctuations in diesel fuel prices—was up 11% y/y and 10% y/y on dry van and flatbed shipments, respectively.
Management sees this segment of capacity potentially growing faster following the Supreme Court's Montgomery v. The Yankees (61-46) look to make it three straight over the White Sox (55-51) tonight at Rate Field following last night's 3-2 win.
Last night was a tightly contested pitching duel that saw the Yankees build an early lead and then survive a late White Sox rally. New York scored all three of its runs in the second inning against White Sox starter Anthony Kay. The rally began when Jasson Domínguez singled and Trent Grisham followed with a hit. Anthony Volpe then drilled an RBI double to deep center field, scoring Domínguez. Two batters later, Max Schuemann delivered the biggest hit of the game, a two-run double that plated both Grisham and Volpe for a 3-0 Yankees lead. The story for most of the evening, though, was Gerrit Cole, who looked dominant in his sixth start since returning from Tommy John surgery. Cole worked six scoreless innings, allowing just four hits while striking out seven and walking two. Chicago struggled to generate offense until the ninth inning. Yankees closer David Bednar entered looking for his 22nd save, but Braden Montgomery singled and Chase Meidroth followed with a dramatic two-run homer to left field, trimming the deficit to 3-2. Bednar regrouped, however, striking out former Yankee Everson Pereira to end the game and secure the save.

The White Sox (55-51) waited until the bottom of the ninth to score any runs, and ironically ended up outhitting the Yankees (61-46), but they couldn't make the full comeback and fell just short, 3-2. Chase Meidroth saved the day from a 3-0 shutout, mashing a homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but the bats were mostly quiet and couldn't provide run support for their pitching staff.

Once again on Monday night, New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe came under immense scrutiny regarding his defensive miscue. However, the Chicago White Sox failed to make a comeback out of it.
In the ninth inning with one out remaining and the Yankees leading by five runs, Volpe dropped a routine fly ball off Colson Montgomery. As a result, White Sox's leading runner, Sam Antonacci, came around to score as the game continued. Yankees reliever Camilo Doval was taken out of the game, and David Bednar had to walk in to get the final out. In the end, the Yankees won 9-5.
Despite Volpe's error not impacting the result of the game significantly, the Yankees shortstop received harsh treatment from fans.
"The never ending proof of why he should be nowhere near the majors. HE IS NOT FIT FOR THIS LEVEL OF BALL Yankees!!!" one fan wrote. "Can somebody, ANYBODY, send him down for good or trade him already?!?!? What's it gonna take?!?!?"
"He had no business trying to catch that. Jazz [Chisholm Jr.] should've been there or an outfielder. This is ridiculous," another added.

The Yankees (60-46) continue their four-game series at Rate Field tonight looking to build on last night's come from behind 9-5 win over the White Sox (55-50). New York remains 2.5 games behind the Rays in the AL East and comfortably atop the Wild Card standings. Thanks to the Guardians' loss last night, the Sox remain two games up in the AL Central.
Last night, the Sox jumped Max Fried early scoring three times in the first inning, highlighted by RBI hits from Colson Montgomery and Braden Montgomery. New York rallied in the fourth. The Yankees plated four runs. Ben Rice drove in a run with a groundout before Jazz Chisholm Jr. delivered the biggest hit of the inning, a two-run double to tie the game. Spencer Jones closed the scoring that inning with an RBI groundout. Chicago tied it in the fifth before the Yankees blew it open with a run in the seventh and four more in the eighth. Backup catcher Alí Sánchez delivered the knockout blow with a three-run homer to left in that decisive eighth inning.
Chicago managed 10 hits, matching New York's total, but defensive miscues proved costly. The White Sox committed three errors which extended rallies and certainly did not help Chicago's comeback efforts.

As 2026 Big Ten media days open up on Tuesday from the Hilton Chicago, Iowa head football coach Kirk Ferentz is scheduled for his annual preseason press conference during the three-day event's first day.

Down a run with two outs in the seventh inning, Colson Montgomery attempted to score from first base. New York Yankees left fielder Max Schuemann made a one-hop throw to shortstop Anthony Volpe, who threw out Montgomery at the plate.
"There were two outs, we all know (Justin Jirschele), I think he's one of the best third-base coaches — he gets really good reads," Montgomery said. "I feel like I got a pretty good jump off it. Lefty (Brent Headrick) on the mound, I felt I couldn't really get too far off first base. I thought I got a pretty good jump and I thought I was going to score. They're good players, too, and made decent relays."

It wasn't a pretty opening to the series, but the Yankees found their way Monday night in Chicago. Max Fried struggled mightily in his second start returning from the IL, putting them in a big hole early with an offense that hasn't been ****** e to exploding lately, but a pair of big innings turned this game from a deficit to a 9-5 win.
Last time out Fried was extremely sharp, going five strong despite a low pitch limit blanking the Pirates with just a single hit and walk going against him. Randal Grichuk greeted him with a leadoff double, and the wheels fell off from there. Munetaka Murakami followed up with a single to put runners on the corners, and after Fried struck out Miguel Vargas for the first out of the inning Colson Montgomery ripped a single to the right side that Jazz Chisholm Jr. barely couldn't corral scoring Grichuk. Chase Meridoth was up next and lifted a sacrifice fly to bring in a second run, and then Braden Montgomery lined a triple over the head of a diving Max Schuemann that brought in a third. It looked like Schuemann might've gotten messed up leaping for the ball, which would've complicated things for a Yankees team that is already down two of their starting outfielders, but thankfully he shook it off and stayed in the game.

Paul Goldschmidt managed a two-out single in the top of the first, but the lineup otherwise went down in order the first time through. The fourth inning finally saw them break though, starting off with a pair of walks from Ben Rice and Goldschmidt to set up a rally. Jasson Domínguez singled to left but it was hit hard enough to prevent a run from coming in, bringing Anthony Volpe up with the bases loaded and no outs. Volpe managed to bring in a run, hitting a soft grounder to short that Luisangel Acuña was just barely able to scoop up and throw to first in time to convert an out from the play.
That would be all for Schultz, as the White Sox went to their 'pen and brought in Chris Murphy. The tide was turning though, and Chisholm provided the big blow of the inning with a double out to center to tie the game at three. Chisholm then stole third base on a head's up play noticing that the catcher was lazily flicking the ball back to the pitcher, and José Caballero walked to pass the baton over to Spencer Jones. CHICAGO (AP) — Ali Sánchez hit a three-run shot for his first career homer and the New York Yankees beat the Chicago White Sox 9-5 on Monday night in the opener of a four-game series between playoff contenders.
Ben Rice hit a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning, and New York put away the game with four more runs in the eighth. Sánchez had the big blow, a two-out drive to left field on a 3-2 fastball from Sean Newcomb.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Brandon Lowe singled home Billy Cook in the bottom of the 10th inning to rally the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 3-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night.
Lowe finished a three-hit night by lacing a line drive off Diamondbacks reliever Taylor Clarke (2-2) that smacked off the glove of Arizona first baseman Ildemaro Vargas and rolled away, allowing Cook to race home as the Pirates pulled even with the Diamondbacks for the National League's third wild-card spot.

One of the largest nuclear verdicts in history against trucking was handed down Thursday in a Dallas courtroom, a more than $600 million judgement that has quickly thrust C.H. Robinson into the post-Montgomery legal landscape.
A jury in Dallas County Court handed down a verdict of approximately $604 million in a case involving a March 2021 crash in Jackson, Mississippi. The case was filed in the Texas courtroom because the carrier whose truck was involved in the wreck, Lupus Superior, is based there.

The Supreme Court's Montgomery decision changed the litigation landscape for the trucking industry. Although the case addressed a negligent selection claim against a freight broker, plaintiffs will not limit their investigations to the broker's carrier qualification file. They will examine the full chain of decisions that placed a particular truck and driver on the road.
That means reviewing the shipper's conduct as well. Plaintiffs will ask who selected the broker, what the shipper required of the broker's carrier selection process, which carrier was approved, which truck arrived, what facility personnel observed, and why the freight was released.
Montgomery did not create a new cause of action against shippers. It did, however, reinforce that transportation safety decisions may be tested under state negligence law. Shippers should expect increased scrutiny when their own conduct contributed to an unsafe transportation arrangement.
The broker may select and approve the motor carrier, but the shipper controls the freight at pickup. The shipper can see the truck, verify the carrier information, confirm the driver, review the paperwork, and decide whether the goods will be released. The shipper is not expected to repeat the broker's entire carrier vetting process. For nearly two full years, Brayden Taylor looked like another minor leaguer whose career would stagnate once he reached Double-A.
Originally selected by the Rays as the 19th overall selection in the 2023 draft, Taylor has an excellent debut campaign, hitting .242/.361/.516 with 5 HR over 108 PA over the remaining minor league season. He followed that up by torching High-A in 2024, hitting .269/.389/.513 with 14 HR and 26 SB, registering a 154 wRC+ over 383 plate appearances.
With his stellar play, the Rays promoted Taylor to Double-A on July 30th, 2024; he hasn't been able to move past Montgomery since that promotion.
Brayden Taylor is a 5-tool player but none of his tools are much above average. He is a solid defender with a good arm; there's some pop in his bat but no one would consider him a true power threat. His hit tool is decent but he won't win any batting **** les. That gives you a player whose five tools all grade around 50 or 55.
During his first full year in the Rays system, Taylor displayed exactly what type of player that could translate into. From August 4th, 2023 through July 27th, 2024, Taylor hit .263/.383/.514 with 19 HR over 491 plate appearances.

The Barons outhit Montgomery, 10-6, with 60% of those mashed for extra bases: four doubles and two home runs. B-ham went 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left five on base, and the Biscuits were nearly identical on that front except they left four on instead. Former Anniston standout Roq Montgomery has found a fresh start.
After failing to see the field during his third year at Alabama, the 6-foot-3, 330-pound offensive lineman entered the transfer portal this offseason and landed at Western Kentucky, where he'll suit up for head coach Tyson Helton this fall.
Helton offered his first impressions of Montgomery on Tuesday during Conference USA Media Day in Arlington, Texas.
"He's a big man. He's a strong man," Helton said. "I say big men lead the way, and he's the definition of that."
Helton noted he was familiar with Montgomery dating back to his high school days at Anniston. As a senior, Montgomery was named the Alabama Sports Writers ****** ociation's 2022 Class 4A Lineman of the Year after leading the Bulldogs to an 11-1 record.

The news that 39-year-old former NFL running back Chris Johnson has ALS has reignited the discussion about the risks of playing football, and recent research puts into focus just how significant the link between playing in the NFL and developing ALS at a young age appears to be.

As it gets closer to the 2026 Arizona high school football season, The Arizona Republic ranks the top 10 stadiums.
They don't have to be the best teams. They feature an ambiance, a prestige, a history, a look that stands out among the 200-plus schools in the state.
Named after deceased former coach Tot Workman, this was the first football domed stadium built in America on a high school campus. It opened in 1991 at a cost of $11 million and has been used for several sports, including track and field. It's got a majestic look 8,000 feet above sea level in the White Mountains. It's worked out well because of the harsh cold weather that can come through in the fall and winter. It seats about 5,500 fans.
It's no longer Cesar Chavez on the stadium in Laveen (the school has been renamed), but Cactus Canyon has that old-school look that stands out. It was obviously modeled after Montgomery Stadium, which was demolished in 1987 and was once the home field for Phoenix Union, which closed in 1982.

A Montgomery, Texas native, Shane Sdao attended Lake Creek High School in Montgomery, a school that opened in 2018 due to overcrowding at the city’s primary school, Montgomery High School. The left-hander helped turn the school’s fledgling baseball program into a winner. In their first year of existence, the Lions went 7-7 on the season. In 2021 and 2022, the two years that Sdao lettered and pitched for the varsity team, they went 20-12-1 and 23-6, respectively, advancing to the Texas Region III-5A quarterfinals both times. In both years, the left-hander was named to the First All-District Team, the Second All-Greater Houston Team, and was the Texas District 5A All-State honorable mention pitch in his senior year.
Despite the accolades, Sdao was far from a draft follow. The left-hander garnered very little attention from scouts and evaluators due to his relatively uninspiring repertoire and advanced age. The southpaw already had a commitment to Texas A&M in place, and after no MLB teams called his name in the 2022 MLB Draft, Sdao attended the College Station institution.
The left-hander appeared in 22 games in his freshman season with the Aggies, starting two games and coming out of the bullpen for the remaining 20. In total, the 19-year-old posted a 4.78 ERA in 43.1 innings, allowing 54 hits, walking 15, and striking out 46. He was used in a similar manner in his sophomore season, starting 5 games and coming out of the bullpen for the remaining 15. Sdao was better in virtually every regard, posting a 2.96 ERA in 48.2 innings, allowing 42 hits, walking 9, and striking out 55. The Aggies made it to the 2024 College World Series finals, losing to the University of Tennessee, but they did so without the left-hander, who injured his elbow starting against the University of Oregon in the Super Regionals.
Sdao’s injury turned out to be the worst-case scenario: a UCL tear that required Tommy John surgery to fix. The left-hander redshirted in 2025, missing the entire season. Despite being injured, Sdao received numerous financially lucrative bonus offers from multiple MLB teams who were looking to float a deal with him while he recovered from surgery. He ended up rejecting those offers and decided to return to Texas A&M in 2026.
The results were not exactly there for Sdao in his redshirt junior season. More important than anything else, he was able to take the mound and his stuff was more or less where it was before the Tommy John surgery, but the results were ugly. Appearing in 17 games, starting 13 of them, Sdao posted a 7.03 ERA in 71.2 innings, allowing 98 hits, walking 20, and striking out 83. In particular, the longball was a problem; he allowed 16 home runs over the course of the season.

The 2027 recruiting class for the Oklahoma Sooners remains at 27 after running back commit Keldrid Ben reaffirmed his pledge to OU on Friday. Running backs coach Deland McCullough is keeping a player on board who originally committed to McCullough's predecessor, DeMarco Murray.
Ben, who is from Montgomery (Texas) High School, has been committed to OU since December 1st. The four-star prospect checks in at 5-foot-10 and 208 pounds. He's the No. 86 overall player in the class, according to Rivals and a consensus four-star prospect. He has shut down his recruitment, which had been competitive after he ran for 18 touchdowns as a junior in 2025. On the ground, he piled up over 1,500 yards.
Ben joins fellow Texan Jakoby Dixon, who was McCullough's first add through recruiting, as the two RB commits in Oklahoma's 2027 class. Head coach Brent Venables and general manager Jim Nagy have been hard at work ****** embling a top-flight group, aided by strong success on the field in 2025.

It's that annoying stretch on the college baseball calendar again. The one where coaches have to sit and wait, fingers crossed, while the MLB Draft decides the fate of their rosters. Texas A&M head coach Michael Earley has never been shy about his frustration with the draft's timing, and once again he'll spend the next week or two hoping his top commits actually make it to campus.
The Aggies took a meaningful step forward this season, but the year still ended earlier than anyone in College Station wanted. And now, several early‑round talents are expected to come off the board quickly. Gavin Grahovac, Caden Sorrell, and Chris Hacopian should all hear their names called within the first few rounds, continuing A&M's long tradition of producing professional talent.

The 41-52 Athletics took on the 47-45 Chicago White Sox at Rate Field in Chicago today. While the A's are struggling, the Southsiders are amid the most dramatic turn-around from last season.
Jacob Lopez took the mound as today's opener, going up against 26-year-old righty Sean Burke for the White Sox. Lopez took on the first five Pale Hose batters before turning the game over to Aaron Civale. Civale cruised up until the bottom of the fifth when things began to unravel. Chase Meidroth doubled on a sharp line drive to left field. Andrew Benintendi doubled, driving in Meidroth. Civale walked Kyle Teel. Tristan Peters singled, driving in Benintendi. Sam Antonacci singled to right fielder, scoring Kyle Teel. Elvis Alvarado relieved Civale with no outs in the fifth. Miguel Vargas hit a sacrifice fly to center fielder Henry Bolte, scoring Tristan Peters. That gave the White Sox a 4-0 lead. In the meantime, Sean Burke had given up just two hits leading up to the seventh inning. But Tyler Soderstrum got the A's on the board with a solo rocket to right field. That was number 14 for Soderstrom.

Despite the fact that many national pundits expect the OSU offensive line to be one of the best in the country, the recent lack of reliability — especially in crucial situations — that Buckeye Nation has witnessed from the unit in recent years apparently has the fanbase spooked.
The winner, going away, was "Can the offensive line be one of the best units in the country in November and the postseason?" I think we all expect the veteran unit of Ian Moore, Luke Montgomery, Carson Hinzman, Austin Siereveld, and Phillip Daniels to be solid, but with the gauntlet schedule that OSU has on tap, will they be able to withstand their regular-season murderer's row in order to be playing their best when it comes time for the postseason?

The White Sox bats have gone comatose.
Four singles. That was it. Chicago never seriously threatened a rally in a 5-0 snoozer against Boston, snapping its 10-game home series winning streak. The offense has seemingly vanished, producing just one run in 21 innings dating back to the Cleveland series. Thankfully, the Guardians bailed the South Siders out by getting walked off in Minnesota. The All-Star break can't get here fast enough.
Davis Martin came out dealing, mowing down Boston on 10 pitches in the first with two loud fly outs and a K. Jake Bennett matched him, and Martin tossed another clean frame in the second. Early hope, quickly dashed.
Chicago squandered its best scoring opportunity in the second when Meidroth singled, Antonacci walked, two on, ***** ody out. Cue the collapse. Braden Montgomery whiffed on a high heater, Junior Perez watched strike three zip by, and Kyle Teel dribbled one to kill the rally before it started.

A wild pitch uncorked by Martin allowed Seigler to race home before Perez ended the mess by colliding with the center-field wall.
