DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Lions know they are asking a lot of star running back Jahmyr Gibbs.
His next major test will come Thursday against the Buffalo Bills.
For the first three years of his career, Gibbs was paired with David Montgomery in Detroit's "Sonic and Knuckles" partnership. Montgomery wasn't a little-used backup, either. He averaged 853.3 yards and 11 touchdowns over the past three seasons.
Montgomery picked up where he left off Sunday, scoring three touchdowns, but that was for the Houston Texans in a 36-31 loss to the Bills.
At the same time, Gibbs was dealing with his new workload as Detroit's only experienced rusher. He averaged a career-high 18.8 touches per game last season, but got 34 in Sunday's 31-30 overtime win over the New Orleans Saints — three more than his previous high.

In a rare FCS and FBS battle of the bands, the Mighty Marching Hornets went toe-to-toe with Troy's Sound of the South during the halftime of Alabama State and Troy's game on Saturday, Sept. 12.

DETROIT — His college career unfrozen by a judge, Orlando Lovejoy is headed to the frozen tundra.
Lovejoy, who starred for Detroit Mercy men's basketball the last two seasons, has committed to fellow Horizon League program Green Bay for his fifth and final season of eligibility.
Lovejoy was among hundreds of college athletes from the high-school class of 2022 who were granted a fifth season of eligibility through temporary restraining orders from judges across the country. The NCAA recently announced a five-year eligibility window, starting with the high-school class of 2023.
Lovejoy, 23, was one of the top point guards in the Horizon League the last two seasons, and in 2025-26, he was first-team all-league as he led the **** ans to within a whisker of the league tournament championship and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Lovejoy, a Detroit native, started all 31 games for Detroit Mercy in 2025-26, and was top 10 in the league in scoring (15.8 points), **** ists (3.7) and steals (1.6). He made free throws at an 89.2% clip.
Lovejoy spent his first two college seasons at Eastern Michigan, before transferring to Detroit Mercy after the school hired Mark Montgomery as head coach. He contemplated transferring after his first season at Detroit Mercy to capitalize on NIL opportunities, but he ultimately returned to the **** ans and led them to the Horizon League championship game, in which they led much of the game before falling to Wright State, 66-63.

NEW YORK – It was a double celebration for Katerina Siniakova and for Taylor Townsend, the final piece of the puzzle to a career Grand Slam.
Siniakova and Townsend, the tournament's No. 1 seed, captured their first U.S. Open women's doubles ******* le together, rallying to beat young Americans Ashlyn Krueger and Robin Montgomery 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 in the final in Arthur Ashe Stadium on on Friday, Sept. 11.
Townsend, a 30 year-old American, and Siniakova, a 30-year-old from Czechia, captured their first major ******* le at Wimbledon in 2024 before adding the 2025 Australian Open, the 2026 French Open and this US Open championship.
Townsend and Siniakova found themselves down 0-3, and went on to lose the first set, but then they turned it on, blanking the wildcard entrants in the second set, before slamming and forehand baselining their way to a 6-2 closing set.

High school basketball stars want to come play for Michael Malone. The UNC head men's basketball coach landed a 3-man recruiting class for his 2026-27 roster, but there's even greater excitement in North Carolina's 2027 recruiting class.
The Tar Heels are hosting top overall recruit CJ Rosser this weekend. Earlier this week, UNC target Darius Wabbington canceled his visit to Louisville, meaning Chapel Hill is now in his final five destinations.
Just when you thought North Carolina's recruiting trail couldn't get any better, 5-star wing Jordan Page announced he'll also be visiting campus this weekend.
According to his 247Sports recruiting profile, Page is the class of 2027's 10th-ranked overall prospect, third-ranked small forward and sixth-ranked player from Florida. Page plays his high school basketball at national powerhouse IMG Academy in Bradenton.
Page is part of a wing-heavy class for the Tar Heels, who also have offers extended to fellow 5-stars AJ Williams, Demarcus Henry and Asa Montgomery. UNC aced this position on past rosters, most notably recently with 2025 NBA Draft first round pick Drake Powell.

Current WTA World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka did not need any more incentive to play well in the 2026 US Open semifinals. She is losing her ranking next week to Elena Rybakina and chasing a three-peat at this year's US Open.
Jessica Pegula seemed a bit off her game, despite going toe-to-toe with Sabalenka in the first set. Her demeanor was a bit flat, perhaps this was her game face. Little separated the two in the first set, but Sabalenka the excellent front runner ran away with it in the second set.

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs was rewarded in August with a three-year, $67.5 million contract extension, a deal that made him the highest-paid running back in NFL history as he enters his fourth season. He is one of the core pieces on this offense for the Lions.
Gibbs is primed for a huge season after the Lions traded running back David Montgomery to the Houston Texans in March. As the featured three-down back, it is quite possible that Gibbs can carry the ball more than 300 times in the 2026 NFL season.
Candace Pedraza of Side Lion Report listed five winners and three losers from the offseason as Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season approaches. Gibbs landed on the winners side alongside the rookie class, Aidan Hutchinson, Isaac TeSlaa and the team's undrafted free agents. Pedraza wrote:
"Gibbs has an excellent shot at winning OPOY or MVP, or both, this season. He's not only about to see a major uptick in carries this season with the trade of Montgomery going down this offseason, but the Lions' "light" schedule should make his ability to break some rushing records fairly simple. That's all ****** uming, of course, that the Lions' offensive line makes his life this easy.
But, coming off a historic extension and getting handed the keys to the ground game should be extra motivation for a competitor like Gibbs this season."

The Houston Texans are set to kick off their season at home against Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills.
Houston has gotten the better of Allen throughout his career, especially at home, but he is still one of the best quarterbacks in the game, and this will absolutely be a competitive matchup.
In order to come away with a win, the Texans need to get going early and often on offense. The Bills have a very solid group, but they are certainly ****** e to giving up big plays, especially in the run game.
David Montgomery, along with Woody Marks, will be a huge part of what Houston is trying to accomplish, and that starts with establishing a consistent and impactful rushing attack.

A 24-year-old man accused of taking part in a series of high-end home break-ins in the Philadelphia suburbs appeared in a Montgomery County courtroom Thursday.
Jabir Hanif Parker is accused of burglarizing homes from June through August, focusing on master bedrooms and closets in search of expensive jewelry, watches and other valuables.
Investigators say the cases involve three residential burglaries and an attempted burglary at the home of Eagles star Saquon Barkley in Malvern.
Two homeowners were home during the incidents, including Barkley and his family, while two were not.
Authorities say the crimes were sophisticated and appeared to involve planning.

Call it a winning streak!
Not for the White Sox. Taking two of three from an AL Central rival in what wound up being emphatic 10-1 fashion is always satisfying, but it wasn't two in a row. No, folks, I'm celebrating me and my absolute heater of 10 wins in 11 recap tries. Put me in every day, Brett!
The box score does betray the tension that underlined the majority of this one. Hosting their first Sunday Night Baseball broadcast as a first place team since 2008, the tone of the game was lively early, though the bulk of the early action was a straightforward redux of the frustrating offensive play the Sox have produced since the All-Star break. They rank near the bottom of the league with a .240 batting average with RISP since then, and it feels like that average should be a lot lower, because getting runners in from the basepaths without the longball has been like pulling teeth lately.
The theme continued with verve for what I'd call the majority of the game — though ultimately, and fortunately, not the entirety of it. Sam Antonacci led off the first and fifth innings with a double, sandwiching back-to-back free bases from the non-brothers Montgomery to open the second frame and preceding Tristan Peters' own leadoff double an inning later. They even queued up a rally in the third inning, when Miguel Vargas and Andrew Benintendi reached base before Colson Montgomery's second punchout of the game ended the threat. Colson finished with a golden sombrero, bringing him to 197 on the season. When he presumably reaches the ignominious 200-K milestone, he'll make the White Sox the only team to have three separate players break the 200 strikeout threshold in a season. Yoán Moncada did it most recently, and I don't think I need to type the name of the one who did it first.
If you've been following the team as of late, it won't be surprising that almost none of those White Sox rallies resulted in any runs, as Twins starter Bailey Ober labored through 4 1/3 innings with highly-diminished stuff. Still, when the Minnesota pen got the call, only one Sox run had been stuck on the board, as Antonacci did make his way around in the fifth, after Murakami shot a single through the right side:

A versatile and highley rated performer, on paper it seemed to some as if Calvin Palmer's big money move in February 1968 was exactly what Sunderland's struggling squad needed, and yet when he departed two years the later his release felt inevitable – and the man that had brought him was certainly happy to see him go.
Bought by the recently reinstalled Alan Brown, Palmer's issues rarely came down to ability. Although fans felt they never got to see the same all action displays he produced at previous club Stoke City they still recognised his versatility and commitment to winning, particularly during one early appearance when against Stoke he took over from the injured Jimmy Montgomery in goal. It was an example of the type of self-sacrifice Brown would usually appreciate and yet the pair were unable to ever strike up a working relationship, a clash of personalities meaning that the notoriously formidable manager and his unconventional recruit often ***** ed heads.
Palmer would invariably take his football seriously but as a character struggled to acquiesce to Brown's rigid structure and expectations. A squad trip to a cinema the month after signing, during which Palmer decided to leave early, led to Brown disciplining him for a breach of club rules for instance, and once the tone was set a number of other battles followed. By January 1970 Palmer was on the transfer list at his own request, and there was clearly no way back for him.
A court case and subsequent driving ban that month served to emphasise the differences between the player and manager; Palmer had found himself on the wrong side of the law whilst Brown had previously served as a police officer and maintained a strict zero tolerance attitude towards any sort of infringements thereafter. In more modern times it might be sensed that Palmer's nature simply warranted a different approach, but the 'Bomber's' management style never relied on subtlety and in the May he confirmed his decision to cut his losses on the £70,000 fee that had been paid and gave his player a free transfer.
It was presumed that this would be the end of the matter, but Palmer, often accused of being 'outspoken' in those more deferential times, did still intend of having the final word. In August he joined Cape Town City and the following month there was to be a rude awakening for Brown when on this day a national Sunday paper launched a 'warts and all' series detailing from South Africa the views and stories of the now ex Rokerman. Whereas Palmer's seemingly divergent traits would be better understood now it was easy then to tag him as a controversial figure, but even still the new column was quite the exposé, with the account being labelled as an 'explosive' chat with 'football's stormiest rebel'.

CHICAGO (AP) — Ryan Jeffers hit a go-ahead, three-run home run in the fifth inning and Taj Bradley settled down after a rough start to lead the Minnesota Twins to a 6-4 win over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday night.
Bradley (11-6) gave up two home runs in the first inning but retired the next 10 batters he faced, allowing four runs on four hits in five innings. Four Twins relievers allowed two hits over four scoreless innings, with Yoendrys Gómez picking up his 21st save.
The Twins pulled within six games of the White Sox in the AL Central and 3 1/2 games of the third AL wild card. The White Sox lost for the fifth time in seven games.
Munetaka Murakami hit his 30th home run in the first inning, a two-run shot that gave the White Sox three players with 30 or more home runs, along with Colson Montgomery and Miguel Vargas, for the first time since 2008.
Murakami became the fourth ****** anese-born player to hit at least 30 home runs in a season. Montgomery hit his 31st later in the first, a record for White Sox shortstops.

The good thing about this week's series in the land of the Crawford Boxes and the choo-choo is that both Sean Burke and Davis Martin pitched extremely well, a big turnaround from their recent starts and a good sign for the stretch run. The bad thing — well, besides nearly the entire offense — is that Luis Castillo once again demonstrated that while Chris Getz may have had a very nice offseason, he had a miserable trade deadline.
Castillo started out looking good, striking out Jeremy Peña and Yordan Alvarez. He then walked Isaac Paredes on 10 pitches and threw José Altuve a fastball that would have been a strike on Aaron Judge but was nose-high on Altuve. Altuve still sent it into the Crawford Boxes to make it 2-0 Astros.
The lead didn't last long. Braden Montgomery singled off Hunter Brown to lead off the second, and Colson Montgomery followed with a routine ground ball to second. Peña blew the relay, though, and Chase Meidroth followed with an unplayable 50-mph dribbler. Jake Rogers and Sam Antonacci then delivered actual singles to tie the score.
There being no other Sox offensive highlights, what the heck, let's show you the RBIs. First, Jake's:
Nice stop by Peña, nice hustle by a catcher to avoid the DP. Then Sam's, which actually made it to the outfield.

This one is going to be one of the more impossible opponent previews you'll see, as the ECU Pirates have nearly turned over their entire team after a nice 9-4 record last year under coach Blake Harrell. Guys like running back London Montgomery and safety Ja'Marley Riddle (two of their top players last year) have made the jump up to join the Florida Gators and Georgia Bulldogs, and even starting QB Katin Houser transferred to Illinois. Ultimately, the Pirates lost 24 players to the transfer portal, and the best I can tell, wide receiver Brock Spalding and linebacker DJ Johnson Jr. are the only returning starters on the team.
Not only was there major roster turnover for the Pirates, but they also lost both of their coordinators. Offensive coordinator John David Baker, who's taken a promotion up to be the OC for Ole Miss, was replaced with North Texas OC Jordan Davis. Davis was the OC behind the Mean Green's nation-leading 44.8 points per game offense in 2026. It was an up tempo, air raid-like offense and there's a lot of reason for ECU fans to be excited – however, Davis comes with a big caveat: he was the OC in name only, as UNT's head coach Eric Morris was actually the playcaller.
Eric Morris runs many of the same concepts he learned from being a player. He has expanded the run game using a lot more gap runs. WSU and MSST under Leach used mostly inside and outside zones with some DART (backside tackle pulls and leads) to change things up.
How much will Davis's iteration of this offense at ECU look like the Morris offense at UNT? We'll just have to see, so this will be an experience for everyone.
Defensively, the Pirates lost DC Josh Aldredge to USF, and replaced him with Memphis's DC, Jordon Hankins. Memphis was decent on defense under Hankins the last couple of years, and generally ran a 3-high safety look

An arrest has been made in connection with the attempted burglary at the home of Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley.
The Montgomery County District Attorney's Office announced Wednesday that 24-year-old Jabir Parker of Philadelphia has been arrested in connection with the crime.
Parker faces multiple felony charges, including burglary, conspiracy to burglarize, criminal trespass (breaking into a structure) and other related offenses.
Authorities allege Parker broke into Barkley's home in Tredyffrin Township, Chester County, during the early morning hours of July 18.
According to investigators, Barkley and his family were inside the home at the time of the burglary, but no one was injured.

There are frustrating losses, and then there is whatever the White Sox subjected us to on Wednesday night.
Chicago wasted nearly every opportunity it received, went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position and handed Houston the only two runs it needed in a maddening 2-0 defeat. The lone silver lining came elsewhere, as Cleveland also lost, leaving the White Sox with a three-game lead in the AL Central.
Davis Martin was considerably sharper in his return from the injured list. Making his first start since Aug. 13 after dealing with a blister on his pitching hand, the righthander breezed through a perfect first inning. He needed only nine pitches and received some help from Colson Montgomery, who made an outstanding play at shortstop for the third out.
The White Sox received their first gift in the second when Andrew Benintendi reached on a missed-catch error by LaMonte Wade Jr. Braden Montgomery followed with a 106.8 mph liner, but it was hit directly at Jose Altuve for the first out. Hayden Wesneski then plunked Colson to put two aboard, only for Chase Meidroth to ground into a strange inning-ending double play. It seems like Jose Altuve is always in the middle of these things.
Martin surrendered a one-out single to Daulton Varsho in the bottom half, and Varsho promptly swiped second. There was no reason to panic, however, as Martin struck out the next two batters on six pitches. His four-seamer was especially effective early.

HOUSTON (AP) — Nelson Velázquez hit a two-run single in the eighth inning to break a scoreless tie, Hayden Wesneski and two relievers combined on a three-hitter and the Houston Astros defeated the Chicago White Sox 2-0 on Wednesday night.
With one out in the eighth, Yordan Alvarez singled and Isaac Paredes walked before Jose Altuve was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Pinch-runner Nick Allen was thrown out at home trying to score on a grounder by Daulton Varsho back to Sean Newcomb (2-4) before Velázquez laced his single into left-center field.
Wesneski allowed one hit with five strikeouts over seven shutout innings. He has allowed one run and five hits over his last three starts, a span of 17 innings. A.J. Blubaugh (5-2) gave up two hits in the eighth before Josh Hader pitched the ninth for his 22nd save.
Wesneski retired 14 of the last 15 batters he faced, including 12 straight between a one-out walk to Sam Antonacci in the third and a one-out walk to Braden Montgomery in the seventh.
Davis Martin scattered five hits with three strikeouts over 5 2/3 scoreless innings in his first start since Aug. 13. Martin, who had been on the 15-day injured list with a right middle finger blister, was activated before the game.

After a breakout freshman season returning punts and kicks Florida football sophomore wide receiver Vernell Brown III earned preseason All-SEC third team honors as a return specialist over the summer.
The 5-foot-11, 178-pound Brown is expecting another big year as a return man for the Florida Gators in 2026. Florida football coach Jon Sumrall has made special teams a priority since first arriving at UF, adding his former special teams from Tulane, Johnathan Galante and special teams **** yst Greg McMahon, a former special teams coordinator with the New Orleans Saints from 2008-16.
"I just want to take advantage of my opportunities," Brown said. "But as far as third team All SEC, you know, that's fuel to the fire for me. There are three teams and the third team isn't the best team. So that's just fuel to the fire."
Brown ranked sixth in the SEC in punt return yardage at 11.7 yards per return last season. Overall, Brown tallied 261 return yards across 18 kick and punt returns and was one of two freshmen and 18 players in the FBS to have five punt returns of 20-plus yards.
Entering 2026, Brown will mainly focus on punt returns, as cornerback J'Vari Flowers and running back London Montgomery are penciled in to return kickoffs. But Brown said he would return kickoffs again if he's needed.

HOUSTON (AP) — Colson Montgomery had two hits and two RBIs and Randal Grichuk added a two-run double to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 5-1 win over the Houston Astros on Tuesday night.
Sean Burke (8-6) allowed one hit and walked four with six strikeouts in 5 2/3 scoreless innings for the win after walking a career-high eight in just three innings in his last start.
Houston's loss, combined with Texas' 8-5 win over the Athletics, cut the Astros' lead over the Rangers in the AL West to one game.
The White Sox had runners on first and second with two outs in the fifth when Andrew Benintendi's RBI single to right field made it 1-0. Montgomery followed with a double to score two more and push the lead to 3-0.
Chicago got another big hit with two on and two out in the seventh when Grichuk's double made it 5-0. The White Sox had a chance to add to the lead after that, but Cam Smith robbed Tristan Peters of a homer with a leaping catch in right field to end the inning.

Things were calm until the third inning, when Anthony Kay saw a little base path trouble after a throwing error and a walk put two runners on. Yordan Alvarez sent Nick Allen in to score with a ground out, but a fly out straight to Sam Antonacci ended any further damage.
The White Sox knotted the score 1-1 right away, as Colson Montgomery doubled in the top of the fourth with one out, Chase Meidroth singlingand him home. Tristan Peters was plunked, and in a pickoff attempt, the ball got away, sending Meidroth to third. Antonacci picked up a walk (without being hit!) to load the bases with two outs. Houston starter Peter Lambert's command in the fourth drastically dropped, as he walked Munetaka Murakami to force in the lead run. Miguel Vargas left the bases loaded with a liner to second, but the Good Guys were up, 2-1.
Braden Montgomery got caught in-between on a Cam Smith liner to right, and as has happened too frequently that ball skipped past him for a triple. Kay was frazzled by the three-bagger, so much so that Nelson Velázquez crushed a home deep and high to left, making it 3-2, Astros.
It got worse from there, as the White Sox mustered no offense while Houston added on. In the fifth, three singles loaded the bases, with just one out. Instead of a pitch that would prompt a ground-ball double play to end the inning and keep the score tight, Kay walked in a run. Kay bounced back with a K, but with two outs was pulled in favor of Trevor Richards, who surrendered a double to Smith double and stretching the deficit to 6-2.

ANAHEIM — The year of change continues for the Angels.
Interim general manager John Mozeliak has been awfully busy since taking the reins in late June. In two months, Mozeliak has overseen a draft that saw the Angels select a high schooler in the first round for the first time in eight years, the first true fire-sale trade deadline in the Arte Moreno era and the firing of pitching coach Mike Maddux, as well as other members of the pitching side of the coaching staff.
And on Monday, the franchise's revitalization continued as the Angels promoted Michael Lord and Matt Swanson to ******* istant general managers, according to Orange County Register's Jeff Fletcher, ahead of the Angels' series opener against the Yankees.
"Part of the reason for all of this is to really get an alignment of how we think about our player acquisition," Mozeliak said.
Along with the promotions, the team also fired five area scouts, two crosscheckers and didn't renew the contract of special ******* istant Ray Montgomery.

HOUSTON (AP) — Nelson Velázquez hit a two-run homer and Cam Smith added a two-run double to lead the Houston Astros to a 6-3 win over the Chicago White Sox on Monday night in a series opener between American League division leaders.
It was the fourth victory in five games for the Astros, who remained two games ahead of second-place Texas in the AL West.
Houston led by one with one out in the fifth when starter Anthony Kay (9-7) walked Christian Walker with the bases loaded to make it 4-2.
Trevor Richards replaced Kay with two outs and Smith doubled to left field, sending home two more runners to make it 6-2.
Colson Montgomery hit his 29th homer to cut it to 6-3 in the seventh. But the AL Central leaders couldn't muster any offense after that as they lost their second straight.

Evaluating Woody Marks through a fantasy football lens requires a realistic ******* sment of a player whose team has already shown us exactly how they feel about his standalone role. Selected as a fourth-round pick last year, Marks struggled with efficiency, posting a sluggish 3.6 yards per carry. While he did manage to catch three touchdowns, and that is certainly not nothing in PPR formats, the broader context of the offseason is incredibly telling. If the Houston Texans were genuinely impressed with what they saw from Marks, they would not have aggressively brought in David Montgomery to take over the backfield.
This is an offense starved for upside outside of Nico Collins, who drafted perimeter help last year and explicitly added to their backfield this summer as they continue to try to support what might be the best defense in the NFL.
The Texans are clearly gearing up to make a playoff run, and their offseason moves suggest that Marks is not going to be a featured part of it, at least in an optimal world.

The good news for Marks is that this offensive line should be noticeably better than it was a year ago, which should theoretically help boost some of his disappointing efficiency numbers if he is actually given a chance.
