Few deals were bigger than the Miami Heat bringing Giannis Antetokounmpo to town. What a blockbuster move. The Heat obviously mean business for the coming season, and they've instantly become a real contender with Antetokounmpo in the fold.
Antetokounmpo was a statement move. It instantly took the Heat up several notches in early power rankings. But, time will tell if Antetokounmpo can lead this team to the championship. The Heat certainly have a better chance now.
But, the Heat aren't favorites quite yet. They're still behind a handful of NBA teams, and there's one question for Miami that really stands out.
John Schuhmann of the NBA's official website has unleashed his offseason power rankings for 2026. In it, he has the Heat at No. 8. The big question he asks is if they have enough in the backcourt.

Wakefield Trinity have signed hooker Mason Teague on a two-year contract ahead of the 2027 season.
Cook Islands international Teague will join from Queensland Cup side Burleigh Bears.
He will replace Tyson Smoothy as the Australian returns home to new NRL side Perth Bears.
The 23-year-old is the fourth player signed by Wakefield for 2027, following Cameron Smith, Roger Tuivassa-Sheck and Emre Guler.
"Wakefield are an incredibly strong club who are really going places and going well this year and I hope I can add to that upon joining," he told the club's website.

Jordan Devey, a member of the New England Patriots' 2014 Super Bowl team, has passed away. He was 38 years old.
Devey's wife, Linsey, shared the news on social media.
Born in American Fork, Utah, Devey did not play football in high school but instead was an avid tuba player as well as a member of the Cavemen's basketball team. After serving a two-year mission in Costa Rica, he enrolled at Snow College in 2009 and two years later transferred to Memphis.
Devey went on to go unselected in the 2013 NFL Draft, but he found a temporary home with the Ravens. After the Ravens let him go that same summer, the Patriots picked him up through their practice squad. He found his was to the 53-man roster the following season and went on to start four of the seven games he appeared in. To cap off the 2014 season, Devey earned a Super Bowl ring as a reserve lineman.
The Patriots traded him to San Francisco the following training camp. He later also spent three seasons with the Chiefs, and one each with the Raiders and Bills. In total, he ended his eight-year NFL career with a combined 45 regular season and playoff appearances.

Barring 15-year-old JJ Gabriel coming in for England Under-20 striker Ethan Wheatley, who has a minor calf problem, Manchester United's 25-man squad for their first two pre-season games in Helsinki and Trondheim has stayed the same.
That surely means anyone from the academy who has a chance of breaking into Michael Carrick's senior squad consistently this season will come from that group.
It means the academy players not involved – including the likes of Gibraltar international James Scanlon, midfielder Jack Moorhouse, who spent the first half of last season at Leyton Orient, and Gabriele Biancheri, who was at Rotherham, will have to seriously consider their next moves.
Australia full-back James Overy also falls into that group.
Overy missed a lot of football with United last term after being picked for both the Under-20 World Cup and Under-23 Asian Cup.

Another tournament, another triumph for local baseball players.
The Mafia Baseball Club, a Pacific Northwest team, won their ticket to play in the Babe Ruth World Series. On July 13-17, the Mafia Baseball Club was the top finishing team in the Pacific Northwest Regional Tournament in Calgary, Alberta. Now, they're going to Branson, Missouri. The Babe Ruth World Series is scheduled to begin on July 27 and run through August 5.
The Mafia Baseball Club of Oregon was formed in the summer of 2025 and is coached by Luke Roth and Mateo Vodjansky. Many of the Clatsop County athletes are familiar with Roth since his company, Mid-Major Media, that publishes on social media, covers many of the 4A-1A athletes throughout the state of Oregon. Roth said he started Mid-Major Media with the intention of highlighting the underrepresented athletes in smaller schools and communities across the state. His company is also a sponsor of the Mafia Baseball Club.
Mafia Baseball Club has roots in both Toledo, Washington and Northwest Oregon. The 2026 team features local athletes from Astoria, Warrenton, Seaside and Knappa, among others. Oliver Stevens (Knappa), Zephan Pierce (Warrenton), Sam Schacher (Astoria), Dallas Norris (Astoria) and Hayden Halsen (Seaside) all have spent parts of their summer playing with the team.
The graduated senior Pierce from Warrenton High School and incoming Knappa High School senior Stevens, had strong regional performances as both a pitcher and catcher. At the regional tournament in Calgary, Stevens spun a total of 7.2 innings and struck out 8, while Pierce hit .333 and had a .429 on base percentage.

African football boss Patrice Motsepe offered an emphatic defence of FIFA president Gianni Infantino on Wednesday, portraying him as a devoted steward of the game and friend of the continent.
Infantino has faced growing criticism over FIFA's decision to delay a suspension for United States striker Folarin Balogun at the recently concluded World Cup, as well as the introduction of hydration breaks and the prospect of expanding the men's tournament to 64 teams.
"I like his deep love for football, deep committment for football in the world and support for Africa," Motsepe told journalists in Johannesburg.
Motsepe said the Swiss administrator "had remained loyal" to Africa and played a key role in advancing football across the continent.
"Gianni has played a pivotal role in expanding opportunities for African national teams on the global stage," he said, referring to the increase in Africa's allocation by four direct places and an additional playoff berth. The continent was represented by a record 10 teams at this year's tournament co-hosted by the US, Mexico and Canada.

Last year's Georgia team was brutally flawed in several key ways.

It was too inexperienced, the defense couldn't rush the passer, there weren't enough downfield shots, and to be totally honest, it's not like it dealt with a tough Big Ten-level schedule.

Including the playoff, it played all SEC teams, Marshall, and Austin Peay. The only Power Four non-conference game was Georgia Tech, and that was a 16-9 fight of a victory.
And even with all of the problems, and all the inconsistencies, that team not only gut-checked its way to thrilling wins over Tennessee, Ole Miss, Florida, and Georgia Tech.

It totally dominated Bama in the SEC Championship, rolled at will over Texas, and it got a prime spot in the playoff - it came super-close to being 14-0 and on the way to deal with Miami.

And that was in a relatively just-okay season under Smart.
The defense is about to be a destructive force, the offense will pound away like it did last year, and there should be more consistency to it all.

There will be plenty of preseason hype around Texas - and rightly so. Alabama is good, LSU is a burgeoning monster, Oklahoma is great, and it's still the SEC. (These things go in cycles.)

Georgia is the SEC standard-bearer, but it has to be even better.

PHILADELPHIA − Now that the pomp and circumstance from All-Star week is over, it's time for the Phillies and the rest of MLB to get back to work.
After all, the Phillies still have 75 games left and a playoff spot to secure. The Phillies, after a brutal first month of the season that led to manager Rob Thomson's firing, find themselves in the thick of the playoff chase.
At 54-43, they're two games behind the Atlanta Braves for first place in the NL East. If the season ended today, they would hold the second of three NL wildcard spots, just one-half game behind the Cubs for the top wildcard spot.

But so much can happen between now and then. The Phillies resume playing on July 16 by opening a three-game series (no game July 17) at home against the Mets. That's followed by home series against the Dodgers and Yankees.

Well, we wondered if anyone would be interested after a disastrous first half, and it turns out the Boston Red Sox came calling. The Detroit Tigers have traded pinch-hitting, lefty mashing specialist Jahmai Jones to the Red Sox in exchange for a player to be named later.
Getting anything at all back for Jones is fine, as the Tigers just could no longer float Jones on the active roster considering his brutal performance in the first half of the season. Jones slashed an abysmal .137/.219/.221 with a 33.3 percent strikeout rate, two home runs, and a 27 wRC+, putting him over 70 percent worse than league average.
That came of the heels of a 2025 season where he slashed. 287/.387/.550 with seven homers in 150 plate appearances and a 159 wRC+. Nearly all of these at-bats came against left-handed pitching, but even in such a specified role, Jones couldn’t repeat his 2025 run. Teams started spinning in more breaking stuff while keeping fourseam fastballs out of his sweet spot and he just could not adjust with any success. After seeing 35.1 percent fourseam fastballs in 2025, he saw just 23.1 percent of them this season, and was unable to lay off the breaking stuff well enough to get into favorable counts where pitchers might have to challenge him.
Jones got plenty of leash to try and figure it out in May and early June after a rough April, but things just got worse and his playing time quickly dried up. His plate appearances went from 37 in April and 41 in May to just 25 in June.
The emergence of Ben Malgeri as at least a decently competent hitter who, unlike Jones, is a pretty solid outfielder, cut into his playing time, and the brief hand injury to Dillon Dingler gave 1B/C Eduardo Valencia a shot as well. It’s too early to hope for too much from either, but Valencia makes for at least as good an option as Jones even in the exceedingly specific role of pitch-hitting against left-handers. He also provides more defensive utility despite being mediocre behind the plate and at first base.

San Francisco gained a four-game split and entered the All-Star break fourth in the NL West at 41-55. The Giants have won 21 of their past 23 home games against Colorado and are 36-7 in San Francisco against the Rockies since 2021.

It has been the biggest domino for NBA free agency this year. After eight seasons, LeBron James announced his decision to move on from the Los Angeles Lakers. It marked the end of his longest continuous stint with a single franchise.
Immediately, it slotted him at the top of the unrestricted free agents list, even at 41. So far, no official decision has been made, as a number of teams keep vying for his services. Now, we are trying to piece together when that decision will come through.

Argentina defeated 10-man Switzerland in extra time after a wonderful Julian Álvarez strike booked their semi-final spot to set up a tantalising tie against England in the final four of the World Cup.
Argentina started fast and took an early lead from a simple corner routine, with Lionel Messi swinging it into Alexis Mac Allister who steered his header home in the first half.
Dan Ndoye and Ricardo Rodriguez responded in the second half with some lovely link up play before the former tucked the ball past Emiliano Martinez in the Argentine goal from a tight angle on the left to equalize.
However, mere minutes later Switzerland would be reduced to ten after a mistaken identity VAR check led to Breel Embolo being booked for simulation. Switzerland played out the remaining 20 plus minutes before heading into extra time.
In extra time, a moment of Álvarez magic put Argentina ahead before substitute Lautaro Martinez scored deep into extra time to seal the victory for the World Cup holders and ensure their **** le defence continued.

It's time for the ladies to take over the basketball spotlight in primetime.
The WNBA will make its NBC primetime debut this weekend as the network embarks on a summer of intriguing matchups before broadcasting the WNBA Finals in October, concluding the league's 30th season.
As their male counterparts did in February, the WNBA on NBC will kick off "Sunday Night Basketball" on Sunday, July 12, when the defending-champion Las Vegas Aces face the league's top television attraction, the Indiana Fever. (9 p.m. ET, NBC/Peacock).

New Newcastle signing Sean Steur says it is an "incredible feeling" to sign for a "giant club" after his £23m move from Ajax was confirmed.
Midfielder Steur, 18, has become the third player aged 20 and under the Magpies have bought in so far this summer after Bazoumana Toure and Ewen Jaouen.
He has signed a five-year contract until 2031.
"It was always my dream to play in the best league in the world, so this is really exciting," Steur told club media.
"I was at home at Ajax – I joined when I was seven and I leave with only good memories - but when a club like Newcastle comes for you, it's really hard to say no. The last few days have gone fast and I'm very happy to join."

Not many would blame Jaylen Brown if he hurried his way out of a city he gave so much to on and off the court, only to see the team he played for deal him to a division rival. But after the Boston Celtics dealt the Georgia native to the Philadelphia 76ers for Paul George and draft ****** ets last week, Brown made it clear he intended to continue honoring his local commitments to fans and the greater Boston community.
And the Cal alum opened up about those commitments and the trade at one such event at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts this past Tuesday (July 7). "I want to say there's nothing to be sad about," said Brown in a recent interview with local station WBZ. "There's a lot of opportunities that I will still be able to fulfill here."
"I hope they can follow me on my journey," said Brown about his fans. "I get that things didn't end in the way that made sense ... I'm still trying to make sense of it. I'm still processing it ... I'm just grateful to have an opportunity, and I'm grateful for the families to allow me to come into their community and get involved and try to find solutions."

Lionel Messi may arguably be the greatest soccer player of all-time, but his penalty kick history is not a highlighted part of his decorated résumé.
During Tuesday's World Cup Round of 16 match against Egypt, the Argentinian star had an opportunity to level the match in the 21st minute. Enzo Fernández was fouled by Haissem Hassan in the Pharaohs' penalty box, earning Argentina a free kick.
Up stepped Messi, who is tied in the World Cup Golden Boot race with Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland with seven goals. Egypt Mostafa Shobeir would deny him the tiebreaking goal.
The all-time leading goal scorer in World Cups has seemingly found penalty kicks to be one of the very few areas where he's been unable to succeed. According to Opta, Messi has had eight penalty kick attempts in his career in the tournament. He has failed to score on half of them.
Tuesday's denial was Messi's second missed penalty kick of the tournament. He is now the first player to miss multiple penalties in a single World Cup (excluding shootouts after extra time.)

Although managing director Lawrie McMenemy was quoted on this day as saying "the transfer market is dead" there was still plenty of other activity going on at Roker Park, and whilst the playing staff wasn't about to be added to there was the arrival of a key member of back-room staff on the 7th of July instead.
Geoff Storey told Echo readers that the club were expecting Manchester City to follow up their interest in Barry Venison with a part exchange offer featuring two of their players, although it was ******* umed that McMenemy would prefer the cash only offer that was being mooted by Sheffield Wednesday. Howard Wilkinson's ******* istant Peter Eustace, a former Sunderland coach, had been in touch with McMenemy already seemingly but the move had now come to a standstill, with a snag in another deal the Owls were working on meaning their approach for Venison was being held up.
Sunderland could have done with some money in order to fund their own squad regeneration, prompting McMenemy to lament "There is just no movement anywhere and I think it is a sign of the time when even players on free transfers are finding it difficult to get fixed up." He was though able to confirm the arrival of new club physio Steve Smelt, who had that morning officially started work on Wearside ahead of the first team returning for preseason training the next day.
Smelt, a former school teacher and a qualified physio of five years, had just left his post at cash strapped Middlesbrough. Although Newcastle Breweries were rumoured to be working on a bid that would save them the Ayresome Park club were in serious danger of going bust and were happy to shed as many costs as they could in the meantime, freeing the 36 year old to move north and replace the outgoing Jimmy Goodfellow, who was returning to Wales to work with Frank Burrows at Cardiff City.
Burrows, who earlier had himself been part of McMenemy's staff, was following in the footsteps of a couple of familiar names. Former Sunderland bosses Alan Durban and Len Ashurst had both been in charge at Ninian Park during the decade, with Goodfellow having also had a stint as boss before this invite to return, which was very timely indeed as it meant he no longer had to move his family out from the capital. The County Durham native had only been at Roker for seven months since succeeding Steve Mason in December 1985 and had previously played for McMenemy at Bishop Auckland.

The San Francisco Giants have had a very disappoint seaosn despite having a roster full of highly paid stars.
Jung Hoo Lee is having a career year, hitting .315 with a .794 OPS. Since the start of June, he has a .827 OPS and 38 hits. He had a strong case to be an All-Star in the National League, but was snubbed. Now, he figures to be a hot name in trade talks over the next few weeks.
The Giants are reportedly open to trading some of their big-contract players, but not every team will be able to take on those kinds of salaries. The Philadelphia Phillies have an aggressive front office and have never shied away from spending. They should consider acquiring Lee from the Giants.

Brandon Marsh was named an All-Star this year, but the other two outfield spots for the Phillies could use an upgrade. With Adolis Garcia out for the season, Lee would be a great fit. He is not an elite defender, but he could improve the Phillies' offense greatly. The Phillies rank 20th in batting average, and a player like Lee could really help them.

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Jarren Duran and Willson Contreras homered, and five Boston pitchers combined to give up two runs over 6 1/3 innings in relief of injured starter Ranger Suarez to lead the Red Sox to a 7-5 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday night.
Boston’s eighth victory in 10 games completed a three-game sweep of the Angels, who have lost six straight and 12 of 19 since June 14.
Suarez, named to the American League All-Star team Saturday, exited with two outs in the third because of left adductor tightness, an injury he sustained when he jumped for Jo Adell’s chopper over the mound.
The left-hander was followed by Greg Weissert (1-2), Tyron Guerrero and Garrett Whitlock, who combined for 4 1/3 hitless innings. Justin Slaten gave up a run in the eighth, and Aroldis Chapman allowed a solo homer to Zach Neto in the ninth before earning his 18th save.
The Angels scored twice in the first on Jorge Soler’s grounder and Adell’s RBI single. Boston tied it 2-all in the second on Duran’s 13th homer, a two-run shot to right-center off starter Ryan Johnson (1-4).

The Miami Dolphins have a few young players that they can build around going forward under new head coach Jeff Hafley, but a lot of them are either rookies or have already reached their second contract.
As for those entering their second, third or fourth NFL seasons, the group is a lot smaller for the Dolphins. However, there are still a few players there who Miami could build around.
On Sunday, Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox identified linebacker Chop Robinson as Miami's most promising building block entering the 2026 season.
"Edge-rusher Chop Robinson might not draw the attention that Achane does, but the third-year defender is shaping up to be a defensive building block," Knox wrote. "A first-round pick out of Penn State in 2024, Robinson made just four starts in his first two seasons, but Miami is hoping for more.
"With 10 sacks and 32 quarterback pressures already on his resume, Robinson is poised to be the new headliner of Miami's pass rush."
