DANA POINT, California – Natalie Driessen drove down Beach Road on a mission, past neighbors whose houses fell into the sea and others now scrambling to prevent their property from collapsing next.
She had a video from March that she wanted everyone to see. When she spotted an Orange County supervisor outside what was left of one mangled kitchen and living room, Driessen pulled out her phone to play the clip of the California Coastal Commission — the powerful state agency tasked with preserving beaches — discussing a home in her gated community.
California beaches are considered public beyond a certain high tide line, the commissioners warned, and that waterline was rising. “I wonder,” one of the commissioners said, “how many years before I’m allowed to just pull up a chair — sit in their, you know, front deck porch and watch TV because it’s public land. … I don’t think we’re that far away from this, right?”
Storms and high tides — fueled by a near record-breaking El Niño — have battered the California coast in recent weeks, destroying homes and eroding beaches. The fallout has supercharged years-long tensions between the owners of coveted oceanfront property and the authorities they say aren’t doing enough to protect them.
The damage has intensified a bigger debate playing out around the coast: What can or should be done to save private property in the most vulnerable communities?

On Wednesday, Trump evoked the Horton ad in an effort to convince voters Democratic former Gov. Roy Cooper, Whatley's opponent in the Senate race, is soft on crime.
"Willie Horton was a bad guy, really bad guy," Trump said, before comparing Dukakis's release of Horton to the pretrial release of a Black man who faces a murder charge for last year's killing of a white Ukrainian refugee in Charlotte, North Carolina.
But Cooper was not the governor when the man was released or when he was later charged with killing the refugee.

Two former Robinhood engineers were charged with fraud on Tuesday in a Hyperliquid insider trading case, accused of buying futures contracts before their employer announced new token listings.
Hefu Chai, 36, and Huaisong Xiang, 30, each face one count of violating the Commodity Exchange Act and one count of wire fraud. Prosecutors say the pair made more than $50,000 apiece.
"Robinhood takes market integrity seriously and has zero tolerance for insider trading. We have robust insider trading policies and procedures in place, including for new crypto listings. WILMINGTON, Delaware, Sept 15 (Reuters) - As U.S. President Donald Trump seeks to crack down on what he says is widespread illegal voting by noncitizens, several people charged with that crime are trying a novel strategy to get their cases dropped.
Five people being prosecuted in separate federal cases in Miami and Madison, Wisconsin, have ‌argued for the first time in court that the 1996 law used to charge them is unconstitutional, according to a Reuters review of court filings.
A ruling for the ‌defendants, which could come before the November 3 midterm elections, would raise questions about the federal government's authority to prosecute noncitizen voting cases. The Trump administration has pushed to deport noncitizen voters, raising the stakes for defendants who previously faced as little as a $150 fine if convicted.
The defendants were accused of violating the federal "Voting by Aliens" statute enacted three decades ago. The law makes it illegal for noncitizens to vote in federal elections, and violators can be fined up to $100,000 or imprisoned for up to a year.

The Justice Department has charged dozens of people for suspected fraud related to the COVID-19 pandemic that resulted in hundreds of millions of dollars in losses, U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche said Tuesday.
Speaking with reporters in the White House Rose Garden, Blanche said that between mid-June and September, federal prosecutors from across the country helped facilitate the arrests of 160 criminal defendants, including around 80 who were newly charged over suspected COVID fraud in Missouri and neighboring states.
The suspected crimes involved more than $245 million in losses, Blanche said.

Chad Baker-Mazara's departure from USC last spring came after head coach Eric Musselman went off on a "profanity-laced, racially-charged" tirade against him in the locker room, the former player is alleging in a new lawsuit.
Baker-Mazara filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles on Monday, according to the California Post, claiming that Musselman erupted on him after the team's loss to Nebraska on Feb. 28. Baker-Mazara and the Trojans split just days later. He is suing the university for breach of contract, conversion and intentional interference with prospective economic advantage, among other things.
Baker-Mazara left USC during the final stretch of the regular season last spring. Specifics of his departure weren't known, other than it was reportedly due to "an accumulation of issues," but the timing was very suspect. The announcement came on March 1, just days before the Trojans kicked off the Big Ten tournament.
Baker-Mazara transferred into USC from Auburn, and averaged career-highs 18.5 points and 4.2 rebounds per game.
The incident in question, according to the lawsuit, happened after their loss to Nebraska on Feb. 28. Baker-Mazara said that Musselman started yelling at the team in the locker room. Baker-Mazara tried to address his teammates, and Musselman shut him down.

Iowa wrestler Jordan Williams has been charged with operating while under the influence, according to Johnson County court records.
This is Williams' second OWI charge, according to court documents, with the first coming in Payne County, Oklahoma, in August 2023.
The incident occurred Sept. 7. According to a police affidavit, an officer approached a vehicle that had been running with its lights on for "at least" two hours in a parking lot/garage at 180 E. Burlington St. in Iowa City. The officer found Williams unconscious with an open container of alcohol in his lap.
The police affidavit states that after Williams woke up, the officer observed an alcohol smell, slurred speech and bloodshot eyes, as well as Williams showing impairment in standardized field sobriety tests. Williams refused a preliminary breath test, according to the police affidavit.
This is Williams' second off-the-mat incident since committing to Iowa in 2025. On June 14, 2025, while Williams was publicly committed to Iowa but not yet signed, he was involved in an incident at ReUnion Brewery in Iowa City. He and his attorney later agreed to an amended plea of a simple misdemeanor charge for disorderly conduct.

According to People, London's Metropolitan Police announced on Wednesday, September 9, that Clarke faces two counts of ****** ual ****** ault, three counts of voyeurism, and one count of exposure. The connection to fuel prices runs through the refinery: base oil shares its crude-oil origins with gasoline and diesel, so when margins on finished fuel are strong, refiners have a financial reason to favor fuel production over lubricant stock, according to The Auto Wire. EIA data showed the gasoline crack spread sitting roughly a dollar per gallon higher than where it stood at the same point in 2025, a gap that has squeezed base oil availability and pushed its price upward.

It wasn't pretty, but Arizona volleyball found a way to end its five-game losing streak with a victory over Oregon State on Saturday. The Wildcats won 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 16-25, 27-25) at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, Calif.
"It was necessary for us to win that match," said Arizona head coach Rita Stubbs.
It was a struggle throughout. Arizona had difficulty scoring and Oregon State had success against the Wildcats' block. While Arizona had nine blocks, it also had four blocking errors on the day. The Wildcats only had nine blocking errors in seven matches this season prior to Saturday.
Things were tight in the sets Arizona won. The Beavers took a late lead in all three before Arizona came back. The third set, which Oregon State won, was even less competitive than the 25-16 score suggested. The Wildcats persevered and Stubbs used her bench when she needed to.
Destiny Ndam-Simpson leads the Wildcats with 3.42 kills per set this season, but Saturday wasn't her day. The Beavers kept her in check, regularly taking her out of the play with their serve. She received 24 serves despite being subbed out halfway through the third set and not returning. Only Carlie Cisneros with 25 receptions in four sets was targeted more. Four of the Beavers' seven aces were charged to Ndam-Simpson.

It was a day of remembrance, but a night Nolan McLean might want to forget.

No one knows this better than Bellinger, the 2017 NL Rookie of the Year. While his hitless stretches were few and far between with the Dodgers in 2017, there were bad strikeouts and bad games. Individually, they did little to put a dent in his candidacy. The overall body of work was too impressive. The same goes for McLean, who has carried a sub-3.00 ERA for most of the season and has quietly put up some of the best starting pitching numbers in the National League since June.

New claims are being made against Kroy "KJ" Biermann Jr., the son of The Real Housewives of Atlanta alum Kim Zolciak and estranged husband Kroy Biermann.
The 15-year-old appeared in Georgia's Fulton County Superior Court for a bond hearing on Friday, September 11, after being arrested last month for an alleged incident involving a female classmate. KJ was charged with seven felony counts, including aggravated ****** ual battery, per TMZ.
According to Page Six, Deputy District Attorney Caitlin McGillicuddy revealed that investigators found videos on KJ's phone that allegedly depict intercourse with a relative under the age of 12.
McGillcuddy claimed that this footage allegedly showed the teenager using "predatory, derogatory" language. There were no further details regarding the latest allegation, including any information on who the relative is.

Kris Jenner's security team detained a man suspected of stalking her before he could reach her Los Angeles-area property.
Zenwilliam Robson, 25, was detained near Jenner's Calabasas-area residence on Monday, Sept. 7, after security personnel spotted him in the neighborhood. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies subsequently arrested him on suspicion of stalking.
Robson was ultimately charged with one misdemeanor count of trespassing and refusing to leave private property.
Jenner's security personnel told authorities that he had allegedly tried to contact the 70-year-old reality star and businesswoman several times before the latest incident.
The encounter happened Monday evening in the area surrounding Jenner's home in the Santa Monica Mountains northwest of Los Angeles.

The man charged in the attempted burglary of Eagles running back Saquon Barkley's home has now been charged in another burglary.
Officials say he is now connected to at least four burglaries.
Jabir Parker, 24, was scheduled to appear before a judge on Thursday but that hearing got postponed.
However, investigators now say Parker, along with two or three other unnamed suspects, stole cash, $80,000 in jewelry, and about $10,000 worth of handbags from a house in Haverford Township, Delaware County, on August 20.
Parker is also accused of breaking into Barkley's home in Chester County, back in July.

The late John Chaney used to say that he was the Black Knight. He wasn't talking about Batman, though. He was talking about the late Bob Knight and his explosive temper.
And there was some truth to that, because while Chaney was generally genial in everyday life, he too had a volcanic temper. And the general public never saw a more impressive demonstration of said temper than on February 13, 1994.
UMass had nipped Temple, 56-55, and Chaney had already made his comments to the media. Afterwards, though, believing that UMass coach John Calipari had badgered the officiating crew inappropriately, Chaney came back to the press room to confront his A-10 colleague, and briefly lost his mind.
He walked in from the back of the room and started yelling at Calipari about his supposed interaction with the officials, and when Calipari reasonably said "you weren't there and you don't know what happened," Chaney really exploded.
He told Calipari to "shut up!" and charged the podium. Others got in his way and restrained him, but Chaney yelled "I'll kill you! When I see you, I'm going to kick your ***** !"

Keisha Monique Epps, 51, and Tamra Marshon Stewart, 37, have been charged with ***** ual battery, molestation and neglect of two girls and two boys — two 5-year-olds, a 6-year-old and a 9-year-old, Uthmeier said.
Epps and Stewart, who has been identified as her fiancé, had been living in the cab with the children. Epps worked as a truck driver, frequenting a route between Miami and Atlanta, according to court documents.

Gallagher and Cameron met in 2024 when filming season 9 of the Bravo reality show. He was arrested and charged with ****** aulting her on Boxing Day 2025. Us Weekly confirmed last month that Gallagher was arrested and charged with "assault occasioning actual bodily harm, intentionally chok[ing] a person without consent and common ****** ault," according to a police memo.
The police report further stated that neither party sustained injuries and Gallagher was eventually granted conditional bail. Gallagher was convicted of three domestic violence offenses on Tuesday, September 1, after failing to appear in a Sydney, Australia, courtroom.
A day earlier, Cameron thanked her fans for supporting her and her son through a "tough season."
