An American Airlines flight landed safely in Dallas after a laptop battery caught fire on board, prompting flight attendants to contain the fire and emergency personnel to meet the aircraft, officials confirmed to Fox News Digital.
American Airlines Flight 2398 was approaching Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) on Friday after departing Atlanta when the crew reported a laptop battery fire, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Flight attendants contained the fire with a thermal containment bag, the FAA said.
The Airbus A321 landed safely at DFW at about 6:55 p.m. local time, according to the agency. The FAA is investigating the incident.

Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk have agreed to play Champions League home games at Chelsea's Stamford Bridge this season.
It means that west London will host at least four fixtures in the expanded league phase of the competition, with the draw to come next Thursday.

In the summer of 1997, I was a young sports reporter in Salt Lake City and got an ****** ignment that, at the time, didn't exactly feel like covering the Super Bowl. I was a sideline reporter for the Utah Starzz during the inaugural season of the WNBA. Yes, Starzz. With two Z's. It was Utah in the '90s. Apparently, everything needed to rhyme with Jazz.
I remember standing in the arena during that first season. Looking around some nights at what felt like a few hundred people scattered throughout a building designed for thousands more. The official numbers were better than my memory makes them seem. Utah averaged 7,611 fans that first season, but the Starzz still ranked dead last in attendance in an eight-team league.
I remember thinking something that, almost 30 years later, I can safely admit. This thing isn't going to make it.
Great call, John. Thankfully, social media didn't exist yet to preserve that take for eternity.
The WNBA began in 1997 with eight teams and a 28-game schedule. I respected the players and the basketball, but I certainly didn't see what was coming. Last October, Malcolm Rogel, the Seattle Mariners' vice president of fan experience, started seeing videos of Florence, Italy's historic buchetta del vino — wine windows carved out of holes in the wall that originated in the 16th and 17th century. Knock on an ancient set of tiny, non-descript wooden doors during operating hours, and get sold a libation in one of the most unique ways possible. Rogel texted Megan Murray, the district manager at Sodexo Live, which operates concessions at the Mariners' T-Mobile Park, and asked if this concept could be replicated at the stadium.
Over the cold, rainy offseason, Rogel and Murray went to work on bringing this idea to life. Rogel's father-in-law built a wooden door in the shape of home plate. His close friend's son welded a door knocker in the shape of the Mariners' classic trident logo. Murray toured the ballpark with Seattle's liquor control board to get approval for the concept and the location of the door, which opens up to sinks and closets in the back and counter ***** e with enough room for up to seven staffers to safely work within the location's tight confines.
On opening day, the Mariners' Sea-cret Door was born as a speakeasy selling one specialty ***** tail per game, with the concept spread strictly through social media influencers and word of mouth. There's been no team advertising and no mention of the door on radio or TV broadcasts all season — the door's location purposefully kept secret to create a sort of scavenger hunt for fans searching for it at the park.
While it took until the seventh inning of the first game for the drink special to sell out its roughly 100 orders, now the offering is bought up within the first hour or so, with a full queue forming in about 12-15 minutes. Yet Rogel and Murray decided early on that the door wouldn't be open every game, and would probably only operate during about 30 of the team's 81 home games. And when the door isn't open, the M's bolt a storage bin in front of the wall to preserve its location and identity.

It was a bad week in Memphis for Rory McIlroy.
McIlroy struggled his way through TPC Southwind and ended up finishing alone in 66th at 8-over for the week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. While he is safely into the BMW Championship next week — McIlroy entered the tournament at No. 12 in the FedExCup standings — it was McIlroy's worst finish of the season by far.
"Obviously [I] didn't come in here with a ton of reps," McIlroy said on Sunday. "Almost felt like the more the week went on, the more I felt lost with my golf swing a little bit."
McIlroy entered the PGA Tour's postseason after a long break. He hadn't competed since his T40 finish at the British Open in mid-July. And that showed.
McIlroy opened the tournament with a 4-over 74, and failed to break par in all four rounds. While he was already well out of contention at this point, McIlroy just looked out of it to start play on Sunday. He opened the final round with a double bogey on the first, and then went 5-over through the first six holes.

Whether you're bouncing it off the wood or sailing it from your chest, you throw the pass with two hands. That's how you best ensure the ball will arrive safely; that's just how it's done.
"How it's done," of course, changes as the passer and recipient grow up, and especially as the passer grows more daring. In a story included in his wonderful 2010 book, "The Art of a Beautiful Game," Chris Ballard noted that part of what made Steve Nash such a brilliant and multifaceted facilitator was his predilection toward eschewing time-honored, bog-standard two-hand feeds in favor of one-handed deliveries from all angles. Those more risqué, insecure transmissions might set most orthodox coaches' teeth on edge. What Nash's coach lamented, though, was that we hadn't broken from orthodoxy sooner.

As the football season quickly approaches, high school teams across Arkansas are ramping up their practices in preparation for the upcoming games. In a scary turn of events, one Maumelle High School player discovered he had been unknowingly sharing his helmet with a dangerous reptile for more than an hour during an August practice session.
The player from Maumelle High School had been practicing with a cottonmouth, one of the most venomous snakes native to Arkansas, nestled in the padding of his helmet.
The snake went undetected throughout drills until the player noticed persistent discomfort and alerted the coaching staff. Upon closer inspection, the coaches were stunned to find the two-foot-long Cottonmouth coiled inside the helmet lining.
Cottonmouth snakes possess potent venom that, if bitten, can cause intense pain, swelling, and tissue damage. Although deaths are uncommon, prompt medical treatment is essential to prevent lasting tissue loss or scarring.
Maumelle Animal Services responded to the scene and carefully extracted the cottonmouth from the helmet without incident. The snake was safely relocated to a wooded area far from the school grounds.

The transition from Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (PEJ) to the US-based engineering company coincides with the start of earthworks at the Choczewo site, marking a key development in Poland's long-term energy strategy.
Bechtel will now oversee construction operations, coordinate contractors, supervise activity on site and ensure safety standards throughout the project.
According to the company, more than 400 people are currently involved in the initial site works, with about one-third of the workforce recruited locally in Poland. This number is expected to increase as preparations progress.
Bechtel project director Ed Gore said: "As we ****** ume responsibility for the site and begin the first permanent plant work, with the initial earthworks contract, we are focused on safely advancing the project, working closely with our Polish partners, and creating the platform for the next phase of work that will ultimately deliver a new source of reliable, carbon-free energy for Poland."

The injury bug bit the Atlanta Falcons right in the rear end on Tuesday, with edge rusher Jalon Walker suffering a season-ending ACL tear at their latest training camp practice.
The blow is particularly brutal to the team's edge unit, which was already expecting a TBD suspension for James Pearce Jr. that could sideline him for a significant portion of the 2026 season.
According to ESPN, the Falcons were already looking for pass-rushing help before Walker's injury, so we can safely ******* ume that they're going to sign somebody. If the Falcons want to go the familiar face route, their best option will be to bring back Leonard Floyd, who spent the 2025 season in Atlanta. His pass rushing numbers weren't up to his usual standard (3.5 sacks, 11 QB hits), but keep in mind he was only on the field for 49% of the team's defensive snaps last year. With a larger role in the absence of Walker and Pearce, he could get back to posting the kind of numbers he did with the 49ers in 2024 - when he totaled 8.5 sacks and 16 quarterback hits.

Emergency services were called to his home in Miami on Tuesday after concerned viewers reported a man "livestreaming acts of self-harm on social media".

New statewide heat safety requirements for University Interscholastic League (UIL) member schools have officially taken effect, marking one of the most significant changes to outdoor athletic and marching band safety standards in recent years.
Beginning Saturday, August 1, all UIL member schools must use Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) measurements—not just the traditional heat index—to determine whether outdoor practices can safely continue. The new standards apply to athletics and marching band activities and are designed to better account for the combined effects of temperature, humidity, wind, and solar radiation.
The new requirements, approved earlier this year by the UIL Legislative Council, became mandatory for the 2026–27 school year on Aug. 1. According to the official UIL Rule Changes, schools must now follow required heat safety procedures instead of previous recommendations.

A search resumed Thursday, July 30, for a 10-year-old girl who remains missing after she and two other children, including a now-deceased 10-year-old boy, entered the Passaic River in northern New Jersey.
The boy's body was recovered around 10 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, several hours after emergency crews were called to the river near Pulaski Park and Dundee Island Park in Passaic, according to Passaic Mayor Hector Lora. Authorities continued searching overnight and planned to resume water operations Thursday morning if conditions required crews to pause overnight efforts.
An 11-year-old girl made it safely out of the river, the New Jersey Bergen Record, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported. According to her account, her 10-year-old brother may have saved her life by pushing her toward safety before he went under the water, CBS News reported.
Investigators are still working to determine how the three children ended up in the river. Lora said officials' priority remains locating the missing girl and supporting the children's families.
The body of the 10-year-old boy was found about 30 feet from where the children entered the river, officials said. As crews continued searching for the missing girl, the operation shifted from a rescue mission to a recovery effort.

Clemson basketball's first game of the 2026-27 season ended with a victory. But that wasn't the headliner; rather, it was the way the game ended, coming to a screeching halt in the fourth quarter due to "wet court conditions."
The Tigers defeated BC Silute 40-35 on Wednesday at the Stella Azzurra Sport Complex in Rome, opening their three-game tour of Italy with an abbreviated win. Officials stopped the exhibition with 8:23 remaining in the fourth quarter after moisture continued accumulating on the floor and made the court unsafe.
Players and staff battled the humid conditions throughout the game, repeatedly addressing wet spots on the court. Eventually, there were simply too many to continue safely.
It was certainly not the clean ending Clemson envisioned, but the trip is more about developing chemistry and evaluating a reconstructed roster than recording wins and losses. In that regard, Brad Brownell still received an early look at several of his newcomers.
Notre Dame transfer Cole Certa led Clemson with 10 points, while TCU transfer Liutauras Lelevicius scored nine. Freshman Dallas Thomas added seven points and five rebounds, and Chase Thompson, who's expected to have a big role coming into this season, contributed six points and a team-high eight rebounds.

With neither team scoring through nine innings on Thursday afternoon, the White Sox lineup had a little more juice in extra innings to outlast the Yankees in a 2-1 walk-off win. The decisive plate appearance was a bases-loaded free pass from Tristan Peters against a clearly gassed Fernando Cruz. In a game in which neither team hit well, it was fitting that the winning run would score without a bat being swung.
Wasted opportunities in the first are not something a team normally dwells on for too long, but in this matchup, both clubs had reasons to lament not opening the scoring right from the get-go. Sean Burke saw the first two hitters reach safely with a catcher's interference and a walk, only for the Yankees offense to go 0-for-3 with a runner in scoring position. In Ryan Weathers' turn, the left-hander had a dose of luck as Colson Montgomery swung at a middle-middle 3-0 fastball but couldn't square it, rolling over to second with runners at second and third.
The lament stems from a lack of scoring on both sides that lasted until the ninth inning. ***** sing the big picture, one cannot praise Weathers enough for the job he did today. Despite needing 27 pitches to complete that tumultuous first, Weathers recalibrated to complete seven scoreless innings efficiently. Perhaps not as overpowering as Burke with four strikeouts to Burke's eventual 10, Weathers succeeded by relentlessly keeping the ball on the ground, recording over half of his 21 outs on the ground. The value of this lengthy outing for a tired bullpen in the middle of 13 games on 13 days is immense and could very well mean an extra win or two when all is said and done.
On the other side, having created his own mess in the first, Burke went on to dominate the Yankees with an outing even more impressive than his win at Yankee Stadium—at one point, the right-hander had a stretch of nine strikeouts in 11 at-bats.

Justin Greaves etched his name into Test cricket history with a sensational spell against Pakistan, becoming the first bowler in recorded Test history to deliver five consecutive wicket-maidens during the opening Test in Tarouba, Trinidad.

The West Indies all-rounder produced a devastating burst on Day 3 at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, turning the match on its head after Pakistan appeared well placed in their first innings. Greaves finished with career-best figures of 5/27 from 11 overs, with all five wickets coming in five successive maiden overs without conceding a single run. It was also the 31-year-old's maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

Pakistan resumed the day trailing West Indies' first-innings total of 311 and looked to be building a strong reply through Shan Masood and Salman Agha. The pair safely negotiated the opening hour before Shamar Joseph broke the stand by bowling Agha.

What followed was one of the most remarkable spells in recent Test history.

Greaves dismissed centurion Shan Masood for 109 when the Pakistan batter chopped the ball back onto his stumps. He then removed Aamer Jamal with a delivery that jagged back sharply before trapping Ali Usman leg-before for a duck in the very next over.

Pakistan's hopes rested on Mohammad Rizwan, but Greaves forced the wicketkeeper-batter into flashing at a wide delivery, resulting in an edge behind. In the first over after lunch, he completed his five-wicket haul when Mohammad Abbas poked outside off stump and was caught behind.

The astonishing burst triggered a dramatic collapse, with Pakistan losing five wickets for just 15 runs before eventually being bowled out for 282, handing West Indies a first-innings lead of 29.

Greaves' feat surpassed the previous record of four consecutive wicket-maidens, achieved by former England fast bowler Stuart Broad against South Africa in Johannesburg in January 2016.

The spell not only marked Greaves' maiden Test five-for but also ensured his name entered the record books with an achievement never before seen in available Test records.
