Welcome back to our weekly position breakdown series. We've already explored the quarterback situation. Now the spotlight shifts to a running back room that's been through one of the more dramatic offseasons of any position group on the roster. Old faces gone. A national-level newcomer arrived. The depth chart is essentially being redrawn from scratch.
For two seasons, Iowa's offense has been evolving under offensive coordinator Tim Lester. In year one, we expected to see a revolution and instead saw the same singular, run-first identity. Of course, at the time Iowa was handing the ball off to Kaleb Johnson en route to 1,537 yards (third-most in school history) and a program best 21 rushing touchdowns. Things were the same, but better.
Fast forward a year and once again, we expected a shift away from the run with the introduction of college football's all-time winningest QB in Mark Gronowski.
Again we were wrong, but again it was in perhaps the best imaginable way. Gronowski certainly did not light the world on fire throwing the ball and again Iowa was near the bottom of the country in virtually every passing stat. But the offense was vastly improved as Gronowski became an extension of the running game and set the Big Ten record for rushing TDs by a QB with 16.
Now, entering year three under Lester, the question is how the offense will evolve to fit the personnel the Hawkeyes have in 2026. The aforementioned Gronowski is off to the NFL, but Iowa returns loads of production in the RB room and one of their top incoming transfer portal additions comes to a position group that was already a strength for the offense.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers received a few minor injury updates on the opening day of training camp, though head coach Todd Bowles doesn't expect any of the issues to become long-term concerns.
According to Greg Auman, Bowles revealed that left tackle Tristan Wirfs tweaked his hamstring during Tuesday's conditioning test and will miss some time while he recovers.
The All-Pro tackle is considered day-to-day.
Bowles also announced that defensive tackle Vita Vea is dealing with a minor tweak of his own and will remain sidelined for the time being. The update comes as Vea continues his hold-in after requesting a trade from the Buccaneers, though Bowles indicated the injury itself is minor.
Second-year cornerback Benjamin Morrison is also working through a hamstring issue. Like Wirfs and Vea, Bowles labeled Morrison as day-to-day.

Joseph Kropschot heard a noise. He awoke slightly, but it was probably nothing. Drifting into slumber, harmony abruptly became more chaotic panic.
A pair of hulking figures unfamiliar to him were in his bedroom with a pair of handcuffs. Kropschot tried to fight back, but he was overmatched, cuffed, and dragged out of his house. Kropschot tried to spit on the men, but his shirt was pulled over his head; his own clothing used as a defense mechanism against him.
"Two humongous Samoan dudes show up in my room and they take me out of the house, handcuffed me, because I tried to fight them," Kropschot recently told MMA Junkie.
It wasn't a real abduction in the legal sense. It was a coordinated one, for a kid with anger issues and a real knack for misbehaving and getting into street fights. His parents had orchestrated it.
"Once we got to the airport, I'm like, 'Oh, this is 'Scared Straight,' I'm gonna be good,'" Kropschot said. "Then, I was out there for 11 months."

On training camp eve, Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard indicated that the club currently intends to keep all three quarterbacks: Daniel Jones, Anthony Richardson, and Riley Leonard.
While Richardson's earlier offseason trade request still stands, the Colts have appreciated the ongoing positional competition between Leonard and him behind Jones, with Richardson consistently being a high quality teammate—and don't plan to 'give him away' by any means (via WISH-TV):

Perhaps it's purely trade posturing, but Ballard insinuated that he believes Richardson still has a bright future in this league—although he stopped short of saying it will continue to be with the Colts. It's worth noting that Richardson is in the last year of his Colts rookie contract, and Indy would save $5.385M if traded this season.
With Jones limited, the Colts had been splitting offseason reps between Richardson and Leonard with the first-team offense. It'll be interesting to see who primarily receives the backup quarterback reps behind Jones now or whether it'll continue to be a split throughout training camp and preseason until the QB2 victor emerges.

LOS ANGELES -- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers could be on the verge of losing another cornerstone player after star defensive tackle Vita Vea officially requested a trade, creating one of the biggest storylines of the NFL offseason and immediately sparking speculation that the two-time Pro Bowler could be headed back to the West Coast.
Vea, 31, is seeking a new long-term contract after negotiations with the Buccaneers stalled. His agent confirmed the trade request just before veterans were scheduled to report for training camp. Although Vea is expected to report to camp, his future in Tampa Bay has become increasingly uncertain as he enters the final season of his current contract, which carries a non-guaranteed base salary for 2026.
The request comes during a period of significant change for the Buccaneers. Tampa Bay has already seen longtime linebacker Lavonte David retire while franchise icon Mike Evans departed in free agency to sign with the San Francisco 49ers, leaving the organization facing one of its biggest roster transitions in years.
One of the league's most dominant interior defensive linemen since entering the NFL as the 12th overall pick in the 2018 draft, Vea has been the anchor of Tampa Bay's run defense and helped lead the franchise to a Super Bowl LV championship. Over eight seasons, he has totaled 256 tackles and 35 sacks while earning two Pro Bowl selections. Last season, he started all 17 games, recording 34 tackles, 4.5 sacks and 13 quarterback hits.
With Vea now on the trade market, oddsmakers at BetOnline Sports & Casino believe Southern California is the most likely destination.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Ryan Blaney faces a high-stakes weekend in Indianapolis.
He's hoping to put Roger Penske back in victory lane at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and he'd like to add a second crown jewel win to his resume. At the same time, he's chasing a $1 million pay day — if he finishes ahead of surprise finalist Todd Gilliland in NASCAR's second In-Season Challenge.
Blaney's solution is to simplify matters by sweeping both ******* les Sunday with one amazing Brickyard 400.
"We obviously understand what we're going for with the In-Season Challenge," Blaney said before Friday's short practice. "But at the same time, you're trying to win the race. That's the big one here — and trying to win for Roger at this place is incredibly important in our race shop and to everyone on this team. So I've looked at it as like, just go try to run the best race you can and focus on that."
Blaney heads into race weekend as the favorite in the final round of the challenge. The 2023 Cup champion has strung together 11 consecutive finishes of 11th or better, a feat he's achieved in 17 of 21 races this season. Two weeks ago in Atlanta he captured his second win of the year.

With the 2026 edition of SEC media days wrapping up in Tampa, Florida, on Thursday, the regular season is just over a month away. The Oklahoma Sooners will kick off fall camp in a couple of weeks, all in preparation for the season-opener against UTEP on September 4th.
Head coach Brent Venables, quarterback John Mateer, defensive lineman Taylor Wein, and offensive lineman Eddy Pierre-Louis were the quartet that represented OU during their availability on Monday. While the selections of Mateer and Wein were fairly expected, it was the choice of Pierre-Louis that raised more than a few eyebrows in Sooner Nation. Venables was asked about Pierre-Louis' inclusion in the group, and he glowed about the third-year guard.
"Eddy, he's an alpha," Venables said. "Eddy is a guy that's had to work incredibly hard. I think he was the top-rated guard by many recruiting outlets coming out of high school. Eddy had some things he needed to work on fundamentally, from his body standpoint, flexibility, things of that nature. Eddy has been somebody that has shown up in the facility from the day he got to Norman, Oklahoma with tremendous gratitude."
Venables had previously pointed out that it was difficult to choose the three players who would represent the Sooners in Tampa, lauding the leadership in his locker room.
"One of the many reasons that gets us excited about this year's team is finding the three guys and telling several other guys that were more deserving they weren't going to make the cut," Venables said. "The depth of the leadership we have in our locker room right now is as good as we've had, better than we've probably had here in the five years at Oklahoma. Really excited about that."

How does the Indianapolis Colts' young core of players compare to the rest of the NFL?
Having a pipeline of young, up-and-coming talent is a strong indicator of future success for a team. It also provides a team with high-impact players on relatively inexpensive rookie deals, which is an essential part of roster-building in a salary cap league.
Aaron Schatz of ESPN recently ranked each NFL team by their under-25 talent. A lot of factors were taken into account when putting these rankings together, including number of starts made, snaps played, the quality of play, importance of the player's position, and length of the current contract.
The Colts ended up near the bottom of Schatz's rankings, coming in at No. 26. A year ago, they ranked 20th, with Josh Downs and Laiatu Latu graduating from this list.
Schatz's cutoff for being under 25 is Sept. 1, which made Sauce Gardner not eligible for this year's rankings, as he will turn 25 before then.

Newly-promoted Frosinone have announced that Gabriele Calvani, Seydou Fini and Giorgio Cittadini have renewed their loans from Genoa and Atalanta.

The All-Star break all of a sudden looks more and more like something the Dodgers need, as they suffered a second blowout loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks in as many nights, 9-2 on Saturday night at Dodger Stadium.
Simply losing consecutive games has been rare for the Dodgers, as this marked just their second two-game losing streak in the last two months. But to lose consecutively in blowout fashion is even more rare, as they followed up Friday’s 9-3 loss with a defeat by seven runs on Saturday.
The Dodgers have lost by six or more runs only eight times this season — they’ve won 22 such games, for comparison — and never consecutively before now. The only other similar streak came from May 9-12, when the Dodgers lost four straight games by five, five, six, and four runs.
For a while, this looked more like a typical game, especially for Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who entered the sixth inning having allowed only one run, with the Dodgers trailing 1-0. But Arizona tacked on five runs in the frame, punctuated by a three-run home run by catcher James McCann.
Six runs allowed is a season high for Yamamoto, who will head to Philadelphia for All-Star festivities but will not pitch in the game. His four walks matched a season high.

WATERTOWN — Even when they’re down, the Watertown Rapids have rarely considered themselves out for most of their challenging season.
Despite blowing an early lead, the Rapids responded by finding a way to finally break through for a victory, winning in their season home finale Friday night.
After the Genesee Rapids won the first game of the day, 9-3, Watertown bounced back to prevail, 10-8, in the nightcap to split a New York Collegiate Baseball League played before a combined crowd of 418, including 250 in the second game, at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds.
In the second game, Watertown jumped out to an early 5-1 advantage, only to yield a big inning as Genesee struck for six runs in the fourth.
But Watertown bounced back by generating a decisive inning in the fifth by plating five runs to take the lead for good.

Celtic are reportedly interested in a deal to sign Manchester United goalkeeper Radek Vitek. The Czech stopper spent last year on loan at Bristol City and impressed in the English Championship.
According to transfer journalist Pete O'Rourke, Celtic are interested in signing the 22-year-old. Celtic are in the market for a new goalie to compete with Vil Sinisalo after Kasper Schmeichel hung up his gloves in the summer.

There's no disputing that Bijan Robinson is the best player on the Atlanta Falcons' roster this year. As to who's the second best, there are almost a dozen candidates with a decent case.
The strongest of them is likely that of right guard Chris Lindstrom, who Atlanta picked in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Since then he's made four Pro Bowl teams and played at a consistently high level for the Falcons. Perhaps most impressively he's only missed one game due to injury since his rookie season.
Lindstrom is the lynchpin of Atlanta's starting combo at guard, a duo that has been ranked one of the top five in the league by Matt Verderame at Sports Illustrated.
"Lindstrom has long been one of the standard-bearers at guard. A four-time second-team All-Pro, Lindstrom has been a tower of power for the Falcons since being drafted in 2019, only missing one game since his rookie campaign. All told, Lindstrom's grade of 88.4 on Pro Football Focus ranked second among guards, while his 91.7 run-blocking mark topped the charts."
Not to be overlooked, left guard Matthew Bergeron also earned praise in the blurb from Verderame.

Roughly two weeks after the Washington Wizards made AJ Dybantsa the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, the 6-foot-9 forward made his Las Vegas Summer League debut on Thursday.
Eager to show that he can live up to the hype and lofty expectations, the former BYU star brought the crowd to its feet with a rim-rattling poster dunk in the first quarter.
The highlight play went viral, sparking strong reactions from the NBA world.
Dybantsa’s first game in a Wizards jersey came against the Utah Jazz, featuring this year’s No. 2 pick, Darryn Peterson. With anticipation building for the duel, Washington’s rookie dazzled in front of a packed Thomas & Mack Center.
Late in the first quarter, Dybantsa drove past Cody Williams but ended up facing a swarm of defenders. Unbothered, he forcefully went up over Justin Harmon for the highlight play of the night. The slam had his Wizards teammates Trae Young and Deandre Ayton on their feet, cheering wildly for him.

France’s 2–0 win over Morocco did not come without a moment of concern. When a place in the semifinals already seemed secured in the 77th minute, Kylian Mbappé had to leave the pitch early.
A few minutes later, TV cameras showed him sitting on the bench with his ankle bandaged. The first rumors quickly spread online: Had the superstar perhaps suffered a more serious injury?
That does not appear to be the case. France coach Didier Deschamps offered initial reassurance in an interview right after the final whistle. “He felt slight pain in his ankle, but that is normal when the matches come thick and fast. It’s nothing serious,” explained the 1998 World Cup winner.
Mbappé himself was also able to reassure his fans. “I’m fine, I knocked my ankle, but everything is okay. At that point, Mateta was in better shape than I was to play out the rest of the match,” he said.
So the 27-year-old will be back on the pitch in the semifinal. Whether France will face Spain or Belgium there will be decided on Friday evening (9 p.m.).

LAS VEGAS – Cory Sandhagen hasn't thought much about what happened when he first fought Mario Bautista.
On the main card of UFC 329 at T-Mobile Arena (Paramount+), Sandhagen (18-6 MMA, 11-5 UFC) rematches Bautista (17-3 MMA, 11-3 UFC). It's not a fight that Sandhagen necessarily wanted, but once he saw how the other top names in the division were being matched up, he had a feeling this would be his next ***** ignment.
The two first fought at UFC Fight Night 143 in January 2019. The fight lasted only 3:31, thanks to a Sandhagen armbar. It's a fight that Sandhagen hasn't thought much about since, but he's aware Bautista may have harped on that result ever since.
"Outside of Mario, I know, having a chip on his shoulder and probably really wanting this one, which has been something in my mind the entire time that I've been training, it doesn't really feel like a rematch," Sandhagen told reporters at pre-fight media day. "My memory is about a month long, so anything that happened more than like a month ago, might as well have been lifetimes ago. So yeah, and I also didn't lose.
"So, he definitely has a chip on his shoulder. He probably thought about that fight way more than I did in this one, which, you know, could benefit him, but also could not."

Fitch, the longtime Fairport boys' basketball coach, recently led the USA Basketball U17 Men's National Team to gold at the 2026 FIBA U17 World Cup in Istanbul, Turkey. He's now won six gold medals with Team USA as either an **** istant or head coach.
Fitch served as head coach for the Americans at Istanbul. His squad defeated Serbia in the championship game, completing a 7-0 tournament and posting the United States' eighth consecutive gold at this event.
Standing atop the podium as the Star Spangled Banner played made for what Fitch called a "surreal moment."
"You try and picture it or figure out what it's going to feel like," Fitch said upon returning to New York. "But you can't until you're actually there."
