Automattic has a new interim chief financial officer: Jeremy Klaperman, the CFO of the company's WordPress VIP Enterprise business unit. The news, shared internally on Friday, follows last week's attempted ouster of Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg, which ultimately resulted in the departure of the board members who voted him out and other executives, including then-CFO Mark Davies. Davies was briefly interim CEO before Mullenweg retook the position.
In a Slack post, Mullenweg shared that Klaperman had previously acted as Automattic CFO when Davies had been on sabbatical. He noted that the board — whose new members have yet to be announced — will still need to evaluate internal and external candidates for the position before a final decision is made.
In addition, Mullenweg said in the post that a candidate to become the company's chief legal officer had also just verbally accepted the position, replacing Chief Legal Officer Andy Missan, who has also since left the company alongside Davies. TechCrunch recently reported that Davies and Missan had signed reciprocal severance deals during Mullenweg's 33-hour leave of absence before he returned as CEO.
"I have 100% confidence in our cash and financial position," Mullenweg's post concluded, adding "There is still work to do, but everything is within our control and depends only on Automattic's ability to execute."
In subsequent updates, Mullenweg also said to "stay tuned" for board announcements, and noted that special advisor and creator of Wolfram|Alpha, Stephen Wolfram, will continue in his position. The company's next board meeting is scheduled for September 23.

"Dallas has been looking for cornerback help, though more so in the bargain bin to this point," Jeremy Fowler wrote. "The franchise has trade-market rapport with Pittsburgh GM Omar Khan. The sides have reached deals in back-to-back offseasons, as Dallas traded for wide receiver George Pickens in May 2025 and offensive tackle Broderick Jones on Aug. 29.

Bob Mackie, the nine-time Emmy-winning costume designer known as the "Sultan of Sequins" for the spectacular, over-the-top outfits he created for the likes of Cher, Diana Ross, Mitzi Gaynor and Carol Burnett, died Monday. He was 87.

A surreal crash at NASCAR's O'Reilly Series Nu Way 225 on Saturday could have been so much worse.
The end of the first stage saw a 10-car crash hit pit road as the entire field entered for fresh tires. It began with Rajah Caruth's No. 88 car getting spun out and ended with the road fully clogged and the race on ice.
Caruth, Brandon Jones, Harrison Burton, Dean Thompson, Jeb Burton, Ryan Sieg, Patrick Staropoli, Jeremy Clements, Nicholas Sanchez and Anthony Alfredo were all involved, with some sustaining race-ending damage.

The Hawkeyes are back in action and for the second week in a row, Iowa will play host to a first year coach as the Iowa State Cyclones come to town with new head coach Jimmy Rogers. While Rogers was at South Dakota State before his one year stint at Washington State, he was not leading the Jackrabbits for the 7-3 game back in 2022.
In a role reversal from the last couple years under former head coach Matt Campbell, the Cyclones will come to Iowa City looking drag Iowa down into the mud for a rock fight. ISU boasts a talented defense, particularly up front, but had their fair share of struggles on the offensive side of the ball in week one against SEMO.
They'll rely on shortening the game, limiting possessions and bank on quarterback Jaylen Raynor hitting on a shot play or two.
Can the Hawkeyes avoid giving up a big play after the Cyclones tallied five of them in week one? Can they flip the script and turn those shot plays into turnovers after Raynor avoided interceptions in the opener? And what about the other side of the ball? Outside the quarterback battle, no player on Iowa's roster made more headlines this offseason than transfer wide receiver Tony Diaz.
Diaz transferred from UT Rio Grande Valley, hoping to become a difference-maker for the Hawkeyes' offense. The 5-foot-10 third-year receiver was super impressive throughout the summer, reportedly dominating in camp and earning a starting spot in Week 1. Plenty of national media members had taken notice of Diaz as the season neared. Just hours before Iowa's season opener on Saturday, that trend continued.
ESPN's "College GameDay" crew was in Baton Rouge, La., on Saturday morning in anticipation of the LSU-Clemson game. During the show, the conversation shifted to the Hawkeyes, with the crew giving their thoughts on Kirk Ferentz's team entering the new season. Soon after, ***** yst Pat McAfee brought up Diaz, prompting host Rece Davis to list his 2025 stat line.
In Iowa's opener against Northern Illinois, Diaz lived up to the GameDay hype. Diaz finished with seven grabs for 84 yards and a touchdown. The San Marcos, Texas, product had a good rapport with both Hank Brown and Jeremy Hecklinski. Diaz won on his routes, created a ton of separation, and looked extremely shifty in the open field.
"If he's out there healthy, that's what he does. He got banged up a little bit in the spring, but he just plays hard and he plays fast also. He is fast and plays fast. As dumb as it sounds, he's really aggressive catching ***** . That does sound dumb and kind of silly in some certain ways.

Perceptions of the 2026 Washington Commanders have changed a lot over the last month. Heading into training camp, the Commanders were a team of mystery, but many believed they could still compete for a playoff spot in 2026 if they could keep quarterback Jayden Daniels healthy.
Optimism grew when Washington signed four-time Pro Bowl wideout Stefon Diggs, giving Daniels another top-tier weapon, while also making life a bit easier for star receiver Terry McLaurin. But the day after Diggs competed in his first Commanders' practice, left tackle Laremy Tunsil tore his triceps. It was a devastating injury for many reasons. Tunsil is one of the NFL's best players, and he was critical in protecting Daniels.
Washington's solution was to move Brandon Coleman back to left tackle to replace Tunsil. It's a good plan, considering Coleman played left tackle in 2024. While he's no Tunsil, Coleman is better than multiple left tackles in the NFL. The only problem is that it took Coleman away from the left guard competition, which he was expected to win.
Making matters worse, new center Nick Allegretti missed almost all of training camp. The veteran offensive lineman moved to center this offseason to replace Tyler Biadasz. While the Commanders are confident in Allegretti, those on the outside don't believe Washington did enough at center. All summer long, journeyman Julian Good-Jones and rookie sixth-round pick Matt Gulbin — who have a combined two career NFL snaps — took turns at center. They struggled; Good-Jones was cut and is now on the practice squad, while Gulbin is one snap away from replacing Allegretti.
As a result, several **** ysts have predicted that Washington will finish last in the NFC East.

The Washington Commanders enjoyed a long weekend before returning to Ashburn on Monday in preparation for Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season. That extra time off brought some good news for the Commanders ahead of Sunday's opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.
"Everybody participated today," Quinn said when asked about linebacker Odafe Oweh. "It was a walkthrough practice, so I'll get you an update on Wednesday, but it's a good sign that everybody's trending in the right direction. Full group out there today getting work in."
Oweh and fellow edge rusher K'Lavon Chaisson were dealing with calf and knee injuries, respectively, late in training camp. Both missed some time, but Chaisson returned to practice last week. Some were concerned about whether Oweh would be ready for Week 1. Quinn's opening message on Monday would seem to indicate that the Commanders believe Oweh is trending toward playing against the Eagles.
Washington spent a ton of resources on improving the defense this offseason. New defensive coordinator Daronte Jones was the first move that the Commanders made. The biggest free-agent move Washington made was signing the 27-year-old Oweh. A first-round pick of the Ravens in the 2021 NFL Draft, Baltimore traded him to the Chargers last October after he got off to a slow start. After the trade, Oweh was outstanding, finishing with 7.5 sacks in 12 games for Los Angeles. Oweh then sacked Patriots quarterback three times in January's AFC Wild Card game.
Most of Washington's projected defense will be on the field next Sunday. Cornerback Trey Amos was placed on injured reserve last week, but everyone else is on track to play. Obviously, the Commanders will also be without star left tackle Laremy Tunsil (torn triceps) and defensive lineman Johnny Newton (torn pec), who were also placed on IR.

Springer was asked about the Patriots' kickoff returner and refused to put a name on it. Instead, he pointed to the number of options on the roster and said the decision will depend partly on the active list each week. That keeps one of the team's special-teams jobs unsettled heading into the regular season.
That answer is pretty telling. The Patriots are not necessarily looking for one player to handle every kickoff. With roster spots changing from week to week, the Patriots can afford to keep the competition open and choose from multiple return-capable players depending on the matchup and overall game-day personnel.

The Diamondbacks came into the game looking for a series win, and with a little bit of luck, putting some more ***** e between their competition for the final NL Wild Card spot. Having Eduardo Rodriguez on the mound was a point in their favor, but the offense still RVSP'd maybe when invited to the game.
The Diamondbacks were quiet in the top of the first, with the only baserunner being a Geraldo Perdomo hit by pitch, and that allowed the Astros to strike first. E-Rod got Jeremy Pena to ground out, but Yordan Alvarez absolutely clobbered one for a solo home run. That was the first indication that Rodriguez didn't have his best stuff today, but the next few batters hammered that home, even if there wasn't much damage done. He walked both Isaac Paredes and Christian Walker, but alternated those walks with a line out from Jose Altuve and got out of the jam with a Nelson Velasquez strike out. 0-1 Astros
This, of course, did raise some concerns amongst the faithful about the early need to score more than one run. That's been a challenge for the Diamondbacks, last night's four run outbreak aside. The offense decided to do some to ***** uage those fears, but did not manage to score multiple runs right away. Corbin Carroll started off the second inning with a double, advanced on a sac bunt from Tommy Troy, and then scored on a sac fly from James McCann. Illdemaro Vargas tried to keep things going with a two out single, but Lawler was unable to step up and ended the inning with a line out to third. Tied 1-1
Rodriguez issues with command continued right away in the bottom of the second, walking Dalton Varsho. Never a good idea to walk someone like him, as he showed when he stole second to get into scoring position two outs later. Too late for it to matter, though, as Jeremy Pena only saw three pitches and flew out to end the inning.
The third inning was… something. Perdomo singled to lead off the inning, bringing Ketel Marte to the plate. Marte got an 86 MPH changeup down and away and turned it around for what looked like an easy single. The only with that is the ball also acted as a heat seeking missel straight to Perdomo's helmet. He hit the ground immediately and quickly found himself surrounded by trainers from both teams. Eventually he left under his own power to a nice ovation from the Houston crowd, as one does.

Iowa started its 2026 campaign in style on Saturday afternoon.
In front of a sold-out Kinnick Stadium, the Hawkeyes completely dominated Northern Illinois on their way to a 40-0 victory. Kirk Ferentz's team took care of business in all three phases of the game to help Iowa open the season with a win. Despite the caliber of the opponent, there was still a lot to like and learn from this game.
The Hawkeyes may have found a winner in the highly contested starting quarterback battle. Phil Parker's defense showed out. And Iowa's return game seems to be in a really good spot. Here's the complete list of takeaways from Iowa's stomping of the Huskies on Saturday.
All eyes were on the Iowa quarterbacks on Saturday. And both guys showed off some good stuff. Hank Brown went 12-of-20 for 129 yards and a touchdown. He didn't play a snap in the second half. The 6-foot-4 signal caller had zip on his passes and made great reads. He has a great arm, which led to a few overthrows and missed opportunities. Outside of those, this was an excellent season debut for Brown.
Jeremy Hecklinski finished the game going 7-of-16 for 76 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. He displayed a good rapport with the tight ends and Reece Vander Zee. Like Brown, he missed a few golden opportunities. He also threw a pick in the end zone on a fourth-and-goal. It was far from perfect, but Hecklinski still showed some promise.

A few cloud buyers can change purchasing schedules quickly, and areal-density transitions can disrupt yields or costs.
Insider Monkey's filings database counted 131 hedge funds holding Seagate Technology Holdings plc (NASDAQ:STX) at June 30, up from 93 at March 31. Palestra Capital Management, managed by Andrew Immerman and Jeremy Schiffman, reported 386,123 shares, about 31% more than the 294,000 shares disclosed in Q1. That growing cohort indicates wider professional participation, not a guarantee that managers still held the shares when they rallied.

Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters set out to give his team and coaching staff a bit of an overhaul during the offseason. He brought in new coordinators and other coaching staff, and the roster looks quite different from what it did in 2025, especially defensively. Those changes, combined with the injuries the team sustained last season, have led NFL experts and ***** ysts to view the Commanders less favorably.

What did the defense look like? How was Daniels' protection? As you answer those questions, remember how that season turned out for the Commanders, culminating in Offensive Rookie of the Year honors for Daniels and an NFC Championship appearance for the Commanders.
The 2025 season was plagued by injuries, so it's impossible to know what could have happened "if" certain players remained healthy. Now, everyone wants to throw the Commanders to the bottom of the league, which is only making the players want to win that much more.

The good thing about this week's series in the land of the Crawford Boxes and the choo-choo is that both Sean Burke and Davis Martin pitched extremely well, a big turnaround from their recent starts and a good sign for the stretch run. The bad thing — well, besides nearly the entire offense — is that Luis Castillo once again demonstrated that while Chris Getz may have had a very nice offseason, he had a miserable trade deadline.
Castillo started out looking good, striking out Jeremy Peña and Yordan Alvarez. He then walked Isaac Paredes on 10 pitches and threw José Altuve a fastball that would have been a strike on Aaron Judge but was nose-high on Altuve. Altuve still sent it into the Crawford Boxes to make it 2-0 Astros.
The lead didn't last long. Braden Montgomery singled off Hunter Brown to lead off the second, and Colson Montgomery followed with a routine ground ball to second. Peña blew the relay, though, and Chase Meidroth followed with an unplayable 50-mph dribbler. Jake Rogers and Sam Antonacci then delivered actual singles to tie the score.

With the 2026 NFL season almost here, the Cincinnati Bengals have yet to hammer out new deals for three of their top impending free agents.
A recent report from ESPN's Jeremy Fowler suggests that the team is unlikely to get a contract extension done for fourth-year cornerback DJ Turner before Week 1. Because the team typically doesn't get big extensions done in-season, this would likely mean Turner plays out the final year of his rookie contract.
He's not the only cornerback up for a new deal. Former first-round pick Dax Hill is set to play this season under the fifth-year option, and there hasn't been anything to suggest that the team is close to signing him to an extension either.
Finally, there's Chase Brown, one of the NFL's best running backs who's still on a rookie contract. Back in January, there was a report from ESPN's Ben Baby that Brown and the Bengals were working on a new deal, but since then, it's been mostly crickets.
With Week 1 vs. Tampa Bay kicking off soon, it appears there's a very real chance that none of these three key players will get a new deal.

The New York Giants are signing veteran linebacker Malik Harrison to the practice squad Thursday, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.
A name familiar to the John Harbuagh circle, Harrison spent five seasons (2020-2024) with the Baltimore Ravens under the Giants new head coach after he was selected by Baltimore in the third round of the 2020 NFL draft.
According to Fowler's report, the 28-year-old veteran is expected to have a role early on — most likely on special teams to begin.

Liverpool have beaten Real Madrid to a transfer on deadline day in a sensational move.
It has been a slow summer for the Reds in the transfer market.
Ultimately, Richard Hughes secured only three senior signings this summer. Ronald Araujo arrived on loan from Barcelona, Bradley Barcola was signed for close to a club record fee of £123m from Paris Saint Germain and Victor Munoz was brought in from Osasuna.
In isolation the trio are all exciting arrivals who will bolster Liverpool.
It's important to mention Jeremy Jacquet will technically count as a new signing as well given he joined the club this summer after agreeing a move in January.

On September 1, Helios Technologies (NYSE:HLIO) announced that its Electronics segment had expanded the No Roads platform with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, bringing familiar smartphone integration to boats, ATVs, and off-road rigs that never touch pavement. The announcement landed three weeks after Helios posted a second quarter in which that same Electronics segment expanded gross margin by more than 500 basis points, and it came alongside a raised full-year outlook. For a company known for hydraulic cylinders and industrial controls, chasing smartphone connectivity is a notable shift in emphasis.
No Roads was built jointly by Enovation Controls and i3 Product Development, pairing hardware built for rugged, integrated displays with i3's software and connected-product design work. Billy Aldridge, President of Electronics for Helios, described the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto rollout as a foundation for future connected capabilities rather than a standalone feature, and pointed to powersports, marine, overlanding, and specialty-vehicle OEMs as customers who now have a reason to look at Helios displays.
CEO Sean Bagan tied the move to a broader pattern of combining the company's operating units to build differentiated products, extending value to existing customers while pursuing new business in adjacent markets. The segment's own numbers back up that framing. Electronics sales climbed 19% in the second quarter of 2026 to $85.5 million, while gross margin expanded 530 basis points to 34.6%, pushing operating income up 90% to $11.2 million. That kind of margin expansion tends to show up when a business shifts from generic hardware toward harder-to-copy, differentiated products, which is exactly the case Helios is building for No Roads.
The company backed that story up at the corporate level too, raising its full-year 2026 sales outlook to $880 million to $900 million, up from a prior range of $840 million to $870 million, while cutting net debt to 1.4 times adjusted EBITDA from 2.6 times a year earlier.
Helios has not disclosed what No Roads, or the CarPlay and Android Auto features specifically, contribute to revenue, so the financial case for this rollout rests on management's framing rather than a number investors can independently verify. CFO Jeremy Evans tempered the company's own optimism when he flagged tougher year-over-year comparisons in the second half, along with geopolitical uncertainty, tariff dynamics, and broader inflationary pressures as ongoing headwinds.

It's been a long, long 12 months for the Washington Commanders. An injury-plagued 2025 season saw the entire NFL world suddenly dismiss the Commanders' 2024 season and throw them back to the bottom of the barrel. That shift in support has put a rather large chip on the shoulders of the Commanders' roster.
Several players have said people will be surprised by the Commanders in 2026, but what kind of surprise are we getting? Are we getting the kind of surprise that restores faith in the organization, or are we getting the kind of surprise that Commanders fans are used to? ESPN's Dan Graziano named one surprise for all 32 NFL teams, and his surprise for Washington is not exactly the kind of surprise fans are hoping for.
Don't be surprised if ... quarterback Jayden Daniels struggles to regain his brilliant rookie-year form.
What I'm hearing: This isn't about Daniels himself. He's an absolutely awesome player, and ******* uming he can get through the season healthy, I expect him to perform at a high level. It's what's around him that has me concerned. He has a thin and aging group of wide receivers. He has question marks at running back. And the offensive line issues, especially with left tackle Laremy Tunsil going down with a training camp injury, are too significant to overlook.
Earlier in the offseason, I was high on the Commanders' chances to rebound and contend in the NFC East. But the concerns that arose during camp are giving me pause. The fact that they have a young, first-time offensive coordinator in David Blough adds to the mystery (as, to be fair, it does with the first-time OC in Philadelphia and the first-time defensive coordinator in Dallas). There could be significant growing pains early in the season, if not longer. And even if things work out better than they look right now, Daniels' 2024 rookie season was one of the best we've ever seen. Washington could be pretty good and still not bounce back to that level.
