Comedian Tim Dillon roasted stone-faced Peter Thiel after awards ceremony presenter Bari Weiss made an Antichrist joke at his expense.
Thiel received the Axel Springer award in Germany earlier this week for his work in digital technology, and CBS News's Weiss used the venue to make her "foray into standup comedy," according to Dillon.
"That's the crowd's reaction, take a look at the crowd — that's Thiel and the rest of them — That's the crowd's reaction over at the comedy," Dillon quipped, cutting to video of the solemn-looking group.
"She's new! Hey, guys, she's a beginner. How about you lighten up? She's a beginner. She's been running CBS News!" Dillon exclaimed in mock-defense of Weiss.
"So, Bari is now starting out in comedy, but she's got raw talent and charisma. So, if you pair that with work ethic and then a desire to dominate the world and subjugate others, which we know she has, I think she will do actually very well in this," Dillon said before rolling video of Weiss attempting to lighten the mood:

This one had everything. Troy Melton struggled and got knocked out early, but the bullpen managed to bend without breaking. Meanwhile, the young Tigers hitters were centre stage as they fought back repeatedly with good at-bats late in this one. Kenley Jansen picked up his 496th major league save to wrap up the victory.
Monday night's first of three at the Rogers Centre featured Melton against right-hander José Soriano. The Blue Jays have had almost as strange a season as the Tigers. Struggling through the first half, they moved long time top starter Kevin Gausman, but acquired Soriano at the deadline as well, and have kept themselves in the thick of the wild card race.
Things didn't start off too well as the Tigers quickly went 1-2-3 in the first, and Melton immediately dug himself a hole. Brett Bateman led off by slashing a single the opposite way past a diving Hao-Yu Lee for a leadoff single. Bateman appeared to be thrown out stealing second on a pitch that was called a ball and incorrectly challenged by Dillon Dingler to walk George Springer. So everyone was safe, and after Vladimir Guerrero Jr. grounded out to advance the runners, Alejandro Kirk singled home Bateman for a 1-0 lead.
Melton didn't help his cause against Nathan Lukes by yanking a wild pitch to score Springer, but he retired Lukes and Kazuma Okamoto flew out to Clark to end the first inning. 2-0 Blue Jays.
A Dingler strikeout started the second inning, and Max Clark and Brett Callahan grounded out.

Orioles 3 Jays 7
That was a much better game.
The Jays went up 2-zip in the first. Brett Bateman started the game with a walk, and scored on Vladimir Guerrero's double off the wall. Then Alejandro Kirk singled Vlad home.
And we got three more in the third. Bateman started this inning with a home run. George Springer singled and, an out later, Kirk homered. 5-0 and we could coast.
We got one in the sixth: Josh Smith was hit by pitch and Andrés Giménez doubled him home. We should have scored more that inning, but on a single Giménez rounded third, and, after Orioles third baseman faked a throw to first, tossed to SS Christian Encarnacion-Strand (covering third) and Giménez was tagged out. Not good baserunning, but that seems to be a theme lately.

The New England Patriots have plenty of questions to answer before the season opener; however, one of them is hiding in plain sight. Who actually wants the kickoff return job?
Special teams coordinator Jeremy Springer is not ready to give anyone the ***** le. The Patriots have several players capable of handling returns, and Springer made it clear that the final decision could come down to something as simple as who is active on game day.
Aug 13, 2026; Foxborough, Massachusetts, USA; New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel watches from the sideline during the second half against the Indianapolis Colts at Gillette Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Eric Canha-Imagn Images
Springer was asked about the Patriots' kickoff returner and refused to put a name on it. Instead, he pointed to the number of options on the roster and said the decision will depend partly on the active list each week. That keeps one of the team's special-teams jobs unsettled heading into the regular season.
That answer is pretty telling. The Patriots are not necessarily looking for one player to handle every kickoff. With roster spots changing from week to week, the Patriots can afford to keep the competition open and choose from multiple return-capable players depending on the matchup and overall game-day personnel.

Just be a better game than yesterday's game. It is a simple ask. Admittedly, it would be hard to be worse.
The season has me thinking about the value of hitting coaches. The Jays had a disappointing 2024 season, and reshaped the hitting coaching staff. And last year they hit well. Lots of praise to the coaches.
This year, basically same hitting coaches and we aren't hitting at all. Did the coaches suddenly get stupid? Or are hitting coaches overrated. Would the Jays be any worse with me as hitting coach? Oh likely. But would any hitting coach cause the Jays to hit better? Is there words you could use to get Vlad, Springer, Clement (92 OPS+), Giménez, Okamoto (100 OPS+), Lukes, Straw hitting better?
Should hitting coaches be fired at the end of every season? Maybe players tend to turn off the same voices, saying the same things.

Blue Jays 10 Rays 5
A win at Tropicana. I always think I'm more likely to find a $20 bill on the ground than to see the Jays win at that House of Horrors.
The Jays, very democratically, scored two runs in each of five innings:
In the first: With two out, Alejandro Kirk doubled. A 'hustle double', just safe at second on ball hit into the right field corner. George Springer singled him home. A0nd Jesús Sánchez doubled him home. I wonder if we have ever scored in the first in St. Petersburg before?
In the third: Nathan Lukes led off with a walk. And Kirk homered (two at bats and six total bases).

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. didn't end his Rogers Centre home run drought Friday night against the New York Yankees; however, he did make serious contact in the sixth inning — with the knee of Yankees rookie shortstop George Lombard Jr., that is.
His worrisome collision at third base took place amid a head-scratching sequence that saw the Yankees flub a double-play opportunity. A chopper from George Springer was corralled by Ryan McMahon, who stepped on the third-base bag and fired a toss to first. But it needed a bounce to reach first, where Luis García Jr.'s glove popped off as he tried to stab the ball for the inning-ending out.
García got on his horse, collected the ball, turned and whipped it back to third. The problem was, no one was covering the bag. As Lombard attempted to chase down the throw, he ran into a sliding Guerrero, who weathered a blow to the head before wincing on his way home for Toronto's first run in a 3-1 series-opening victory over the Yankees (68-54).
The Blue Jays (60-64), now only one game back of the final wild-card spot in the American League after selling at the trade deadline, improved to 6-2 in their past eight games, in large part thanks to catcher Alejandro Kirk. He scored Springer in the sixth with a two-out double. Then he launched a solo shot in the eighth.
Guerrero, though, didn't return to the game after the thump he endured. He finished 1-for-3 with a single.

The player to be named later in the Baltimore Orioles and Boston Red Sox trade deadline blockbuster involving catcher Adley Rutschman has been revealed.
In addition to the three other prospects (RHP Anthony Eyanson, RHP Kyson Witherspoon, OF Enddy Azocar) the Orioles acquired in exchange for Rutschman, they've also added a second outfielder.
According to MLB.com's Brian Murphy, Baltimore acquired 18-year-old Harold Rivas from the Red Sox.
"Rivas was the No. 32 prospect in the 2025 international signing class. He was Boston's No. 13 prospect this year and is now the Orioles' No. 26 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline," Murphy wrote Wednesday.

TORONTO (AP) — Ernie Clement drove in the tiebreaking run in the sixth inning, Brett Bateman had two RBIs and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 5-3 on Tuesday night.
Toronto's George Springer walked to begin the sixth and went to third on Alejandro Kirk's single before scoring on Clement's fielder's choice.
Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu hit solo homers, but the Red Sox lost their fourth straight. It's Boston's longest skid since losing four in a row from June 7-10.
Adley Rutschman went 1 for 3 and walked twice in his debut with the Red Sox. The three-time All-Star, picked up in a deal with Baltimore at the trade deadline, hadn't played since July 18 with the Orioles because of left wrist inflammation.
Chase Lee (1-0) got five outs for his first big league win, and Spencer Miles earned his first career save.

Blue Jays stay put in the power rankings after a grueling week originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
After making the World Series last season, things have gone according to plan for the Toronto Blue Jays this year. While they had their sights set on making another deep run in the postseason, they have quite a bit of work to do.
The club has been missing some key pieces that helped them last season, like Bo Bichette and Chris Bassitt, while Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and George Springer have taken a step back this year.
And after trading away Kevin Gausman, Daulton Varsho, and Jeff Hoffman, things likely aren't going to get any easier, especially as they are already 3.5 games out of an AL wild card spot.

The New England Patriots held tryouts for two punters during rookie and mandatory minicamp this offseason. Neither was signed.
Instead, the team entered training camp with confidence in Bryce Baringer.
The 27-year old is coming off a season in which he punted a career-low 51 times in the regular season before a busy playoff run. Baringer continued to showcase his big leg by again eclipsing the 70-yard longest punt mark and recording a career-best 4.41-second average hang time, but remained hampered by the occasional mishit — such as a 22-yard punt in Week 13 against the Giants.
That's why Baringer's offseason focus was centered on one thing.
"I want to be more consistent," he said. "No. 2, big emphasis was hang time and distance. Kind of having that relationship. Just knowing what I'm capable of doing, trusting myself, my process. Like I said, [Jeremy Springer], [Tom Quinn], [Mike Vrabel], they all know what I'm capable of. It's just going out and being able to do it, and just trusting myself wholeheartedly."

All streaks must eventually come to an end. Blue Jays 3 Astros 1 For Houston, their 6-game run might be history, but a new chapter has officially begun. A few hours prior to Monday's trade deadline, Houston would acquire Daulton Varsho in an effort to shore up their outfield production. Varsho would seize the moment, paying immediate dividends in the first inning. In some ways, it was only fitting that Nathan Lukes would start the night flying out to Daulton, and then in his Astros debut at the plate, he'd reach on a single to right field.
In the top of the second, Alejandro Kirk started the scoring with a solo shot to left field. That made the score 1-0. In the fourth, Toronto would increase their lead after a pair of hits from Kazuma Okamoto and George Springer, combined with an error from Taylor Trammell. That combination of events made things 3-0.
Houston would have their chances early but failed to capitalize. In their first and second innings they'd have multiple runners on base, but Christian Walker and Jeremy Pena each struck out swinging, stranding a pair of runners.
Cristian Javier would provide a quality start. Javier would go 6 innings and allow just 3 runs while scattering 7 hits. In the 7th inning, Tatsuya Imai would make his debut out of the bullpen and pitch three scoreless innings, at one point, striking out five in a row for an impressive relief outing.
In the bottom of the 6th, Houston would load the bases. They'd score their first and only run on Jeremy Pena's RBI single which brought in Yanier Diaz. In the frame, Yordan Alvarez would be intentionally walked for the 23rd time this season. The Astros all-time record is 27 free passes, which Jeff Bagwell registered back in 1997.

Toronto Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins commented on the trade deadline, including keeping several veterans on the team's roster.
The Blue Jays made several trades ahead of the MLB trade deadline, including trading away Kevin Gausman and acquiring Jose Soriano, among others.
However, while the team traded several players, they also kept George Springer, Max Scherzer, and Shane Bieber, despite all three players having expiring contracts.
Speaking to Blue Jays reporters following the team's deadline moves, Atkins revealed that the reason Springer was not moved at the deadline was that the veteran DH wanted to stay in Toronto.
"It was important for him to be here. We wanted him here as we continue to push forward," Atkins said.

Everybody called San Diego to ask about Mason Miller. **** ody got him.
The Padres spent Monday buying two starting pitchers instead. Miller is still in Southern California. Reid Detmers stayed with the Los Angeles Angels while the roster came apart around him. Trevor Rogers remained in Baltimore after the Orioles moved their franchise catcher. George Springer stayed in Toronto because his contract says he doesn't have to go anywhere. Nathan Eovaldi, Jacob deGrom and Corey Seager told the Rangers they weren't leaving Texas.
These were guys who came up in multiple rumors and who would have moved the needle for a contender, but they did not end up switching uniforms.

The Boston Red Sox have reportedly pulled off a blockbuster with the Baltimore Orioles to acquire Adley Rutschman, but there is still time for them to make more moves.
Last week, CBS Sports' Julian McWilliams reported that George Springer was interested in joining the Red Sox via trade. However, McWilliams is now reporting that such a deal is unlikely. Springer will be a free agent after the seaosn, so trading him would make sense for the Toronto Blue Jays.
Even though the Blue Jays pulled off a big trade for José Soriano, they are still expected to be sellers. They already traded Kevin Gausman, and Springer is a few months away from free agency as well. He could be on the move, but his fit with the Red Sox never made much sense.
He is a designated hitter, and the Red Sox already have Masataka Yoshida in that spot. When Roman Anthony returns, he could also spend time as the team's designated hitter. Springer is not having a great year either, so trading for him would have been a puzzling move in the first place.

TORONTO (AP) — Pinch-hitter Luis Urías broke an eighth-inning tie with a two-run single and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-1 on Friday night.
Cardinals reliever Peter Strzelecki (0-1) exited after one-out walks to George Springer and Daulton Varsho. Gordon Graceffo came on and walked Ernie Clement to load the bases for Urías, who grounded a two-run single through the left side.
Jeff Hoffman (6-7) worked one inning for the win and Louis Varland finished for his 24th save in 24 opportunities as Toronto extended its home winning streak over St. Louis to seven games.
The Blue Jays have won five of their past eight games after losing the previous four.
St. Louis lost for the fifth time in six games. The Cardinals went 10-18 in July.

The Cleveland Browns are back, with the official start of training camp on Wednesday as the team prepares for their first preseason game in a couple of weeks. The first day saw Grant Delpit sign a three-year extension with the team, as well as veteran pass rusher and former Brown Jadeveon Clowney visiting with the team, though they didn't agree to any deal yet.
The Browns announced ahead of Thursday's practice that the team's top two groundskeepers would be retiring before the start of this season. Chris Powell, the team's Head Groundskeeper, has been with the team for 29 seasons, including the last 27 seasons in his position as head groundskeeper.
Scott Springer, the team's Grounds Supervisor, is also retiring after spending 27 seasons working closely with Chris Powell, maintaining both practice fields and the stadium. Chris Powell released this statement after the announcement.
"For me, 27 seasons with the new Browns, to be able to do what we do and still want to come in and enjoy the company, enjoy the task at hand — it's one of these things where we don't want anything to pop up, but it's the challenge that keeps us going. We're not just going out and mowing the grass every day. We approach anything that's not correct and take it as a challenge."

Shane Bieber melted down, which cost the Jays a chance to win but probably more importantly derailed a string of solid starts that had hopefully been pushing his trade value back up. Also, Vladimir Guerrero jr. left the game before the bottom of the fourth after legging out an infield single and throwing error in the third. It was later reported to be a right hamstring injury. So a good day all around.
We got a fun moment before the game as Louis Varland and his brother Gus, recently recalled from AAA by the Nationals, got to do the lineup card exchange.
There was an hour long rain delay before we could get going tonight. Cade Cavalli didn't look bothered, but it looked like the delay really threw Shane Bieber. He couldn't get any of his pitches across, missing badly all over the plate. After the Jays were retired in the first with just a Nathan Lukes single erased by a Vladimir Guerrero jr. double play ball, Bieber walked two the first three Washington hitters. Then CJ Abrams reached on an infield ground ball when Bieber couldn't find the bag while recieving Luis Urias' toss, loading the bases with just one out. Walks to Keibert Ruiz and Daylen Lile forced in a pair of runs. A Nasim Nunez sac fly plated Abrams to make it 3-0. Then another walk, to Jorbit Vivas, re-loaded the bases, and a sixth, to Jacob Young, pushed yet another run across. That was enough for the Jays, who called for Brendon Little. He got a ground out to finally end the inning.
The Jays had a chance in the second, with George Springer walking and Ernie Clement lining a single, but they failed to capitalize. Little returned for the bottom half and struck out the side.
Toronto got on board in the third. Yohendrick Pinango walked with one out, but was traded for Lukes on a fielder's choice. The speed upgrade mattered, as Vlad hit a slow roller to third and Vivas's throw to first went wide, allowing Lukes to come all the way around to score, cutting the deficit to 4-1. Little kept dealing, getting a ground out and a strikeout among the first two batters. Nunez reached when Ernie Clement bobbled a soft chopper to third, but Brandon Valenzuela gunned him down stealing second with a beautiful throw.

Well, we scored two runs.
For a moment, it looked like we could have big first inning. With one out (an Ernie Clement strikeout), Nathan Lukes walked and Vladimir Guerrero doubled high off the wall in right center. A few feet left and it would have been a home run over the lower part of the wall. But still, runners on second and third and one out? George Springer ground out, bringing in a run. Yohendrick Piñango struck out to end the inning.
We wouldn’t score again until the seventh. With one out, Alejandro Kirk homered. He was the one with a good day with the bat. Two for four, with hard hit fly out to the track in the second inning.
We had just the four hits, the three mentioned above and a Piñango single. And one walk. Along with eight strikeouts.

George Springer has joined the team in San Francisco, but there is no word that he’s been added to the roster and he isn’t in the lineup tonight, which is something that we could have an explanation about. Of course, as soon as I hit publish the team will make an announcement.
The lineup they have posted:

GIANTS
Ernie Clement – 2B

SEATTLE — Toronto Blue Jays designated hitter George Springer could make his return from the family medical emergency list, manager John Schneider said.
The four-time All-Star went on the paternity list, welcoming the birth of his third child. The paternity leave expired, so the Blue Jays moved him to the family medical emergency list. But Schneider confirmed everything was well and the move was to give their leadoff hitter more time.
He is expecting Springer to be available for its road trip to San Francisco.
“I think he’s going to travel tomorrow,” Schneider said after Toronto’s 4-0 loss to Seattle. “That was the tentative plan. So, just got to confirm that with him.”
Springer, 36, is slashing .221/.308/.373 with eight homers and 21 RBIs.

NORTH KARELIA, Finland — Bears, wolves and moose still cross the frontier freely, but for the border guards patrolling this stretch of fields and forest, this is where NATO ends.
A line of wooden poles and painted markers cuts through the light green grass, separating Finland from Russia along the alliance's longest border with Moscow — 1,343 kilometers (835 miles) of increasingly militarized territory. The crossing has been closed since 2023, the year after the Kremlin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. On the other side lies land Finland lost to the Soviet Union when it was left to fight largely on its own in the early months of World War II.
Reporters from Axel Springer's Global Reporters Network traveled to three exposed stretches of Europe's eastern frontier — Finland's forested border with Russia, Poland's fortified line with Kaliningrad and Belarus and Lithuania's vulnerable edge near the Suwałki Gap — to see how ready NATO's frontline states are for the possibility that Moscow will attack the alliance.
What we observed was a continent racing to harden its eastern edge against a threat it can no longer ******* ume Washington will handle. As US President Donald Trump questions old security guarantees and looks to reduce America's military footprint in Europe, the countries closest to Russia are building fortifications, expanding reserves, buying tanks and drones and preparing for the possibility that the first days of any conflict may be theirs to fight largely alone.
Since his reelection in 2024, Trump has repeatedly called into question Washington's commitment to NATO's Article 5, the foundational clause under which an attack on one member is treated as an attack on all. The uncertainty only deepened after the war in Iran, when the president and his team threatened to reassess US membership in NATO in response to European allies' refusal to join the conflict.

SEATTLE (AP) — Toronto Blue Jays designated hitter George Springer could make his return from the family medical emergency list as soon as Monday, manager John Schneider said Sunday.

Game number 89…..the season is flying by. Winnning a second game in a row would be nice.
George Springer is still away, moved to the Family Medical Emergency list, but there is no emergency, just letting George have more time with his son.
Unfortunately, it looks like Canada’s time in the World Cup is over. They did great. I would have been good with a couple more wins, but they played well.
Lineups:

The New York Mets recently made a change at manager with the firing of Carlos Mendoza, but they continue to make brutal mistakes in what's been a disastrous season. And those mistakes came as soon as the first batter they faced in Monday night's game against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.
Toronto's George Springer hit a looping line drive that New York star left fielder Juan Soto read poorly and played even worse.
What looked like maybe an out, and at worst a single, turned into a little league home run for Springer. The ball went under Soto's glove all the way to the wall, and rookie center fielder A.J. Ewing went to pick the ball up before fumbling it away. By the time Soto chased the ball down, Springer was on his way home to give the Blue Jays a 1-0 lead.
"A comedy of errors in the Mets' outfield!" SNY play-by-play announcer Gary Cohen. "Soto got too close to it, and it bounced by him! And when Ewing came over to try to pick it up, he fumbled it, and Springer went all the way around to score!"
"Holy 2015 World Series!" Mets color commentator Ron Darling said. "I mean, my goodness!"

The Mets (35-50) and Blue Jays (40-45) continue their three-game interleague series tonight at Rogers Centre.
George Springer's trip to the plate in the first inning epitomized the Mets' season to date. The veteran turned a single to right that got by Juan Sotointo a little league home run and that was the difference as Trey Yesavageoutdueled Sean Manaea and Toronto won 2-1. The Blue Jays snapped a six-game losing streak in the process. Yesavage worked 6.2 innings and allowed just one run on three hits. Manaea gave up two runs over 5.2 innings. Francisco Lindorhomered to account for New York's run.
Tonight, the Mets will hand the ball to Nolan McLean, who enters with a 4-5 record, 4.03 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and 106 strikeouts in 89.1 innings. McLean has emerged as one of the brighter spots in New York's rotation this season, but he was awful in his last start allowing six runs over six innings to the Cubs last Wednesday. Toronto counters with veteran right-hander Kevin Gausman, who brings a 4-6 record, 4.36 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, and 93 strikeouts in 95 innings to the **** p. Gausman has experienced an up-and-down season by his standards. His last start was a downer as he allowed ten hits and six runs over six innings last Thursday against the Rangers.
Lets dive into tonight's matchup and find a sweat or two.
We've got all the info and **** ysis you need to know ahead of the game, including the latest info on the how to catch first pitch, odds, recent team performance, player stats, and of course, our predictions, picks & best bets for the game from our modeling tools and staff of experts.

Phillies and Blue Jays could make easy $150M trade to solve two issues originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
We all know that the Philadelphia Phillies are looking to add a right-handed-hitting outfielder at Major League Baseball's trade deadline.
The only question is who the Phillies will pursue, as there aren't exactly a ton of perfect names available for them to consider. Among the options, one recently floated name would be very interesting to look at. It was none other than Toronto Blue Jays outfielder and World Series champion George Springer.
“Springer has pedigree — he's won World Series MVP, has four All-Star nods and three Silver Sluggers,” Evan Macy wrote.
“He's also about to come off the books from the struggling defending AL champs. But he's having his worst offensive season as a pro, hitting just .215 through 51 games. Perhaps he's a candidate for a change of scenery?”
