In his surprise return to the ATP 500 event in Basel this year, Novak Djokovic could not quite produce the run he would have hoped for, as he fell to Jan-Lennard Struff in his second match of the tournament.
Although it was a tightly contested encounter, with all three sets reaching the 5-5 mark, Djokovic eventually lost after making some uncharacteristic errors in the final-set tiebreak, handing Struff his first-ever victory against him in their ninth meeting.
At this stage of his career, Djokovic is far removed from needing results at ATP 500 tournaments. However, he has consistently stated that, regardless of his age, he always plays to win. More importantly, this defeat has dented his hopes of achieving something he was particularly keen on when returning to Basel: securing his place at the ATP Finals in Turin in just over two weeks.
Djokovic entered Basel ranked 12th in the Race to Turin, an event for which only the top eight players qualify. This is a significant change from previous years, when the Serbian would typically have secured his qualification by this stage of the season, even if he subsequently chose not to participate, as he did in each of the past two years. The Serbian needed a deep run in Basel to strengthen his position and avoid having to rely entirely on the Paris Masters to secure qualification.
However, following this defeat, Djokovic will now have to do precisely that. Given the current landscape of the live rankings, he will need a deep run in Paris to put himself in a strong position to qualify. At the time of writing, Djokovic sits 11th in the Race to Turin, with Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz and Ben Shelton already having secured their places.

Novak Djokovic's hopes of making a record 19th appearance at the ATP Finals have been dented by a surprise defeat against Jan-Lennard Struff at the Swiss Indoors in Basel.
Playing in the tournament for the first time in 15 years, the 39-year-old lost 6-7 (4-7) 7-5 7-6 (7-5) - the first time he has been beaten by Struff in nine meetings.
"I knew I needed to go for it. There was only one way to play it. So, I was very, very happy," said the world number 27.
"I knew I had to play my best tennis to have a chance. The last eight times he beat me very, very easily. So, I'm very, very happy and pleased with the performance."
The year's top-eight performers qualify for the ATP event in Turin and this result leaves Djokovic - the men's game's record 24-time Grand Slam winner - 11th in the standings.

Real Madrid have played better in the past three games than they have all season, and it comes as no surprise as the side looks far more threatening in attack and has a sense of unity.
It simply cannot be ignored that Real Madrid's best level came after Vinicius Jr.'s suspension and it seems to be more causation than correlation between his absence and the team's improved displays.
Needless to say, the Brazilian star stands as the biggest loser from Los Blancos' current situation as his starting spot in the team is now under serious threat. At this point, there is no guarantee he will remain a starter after he returns from suspension.

As confirmed by El Chiringuito in a recent report, the Brazilian star is currently working very hard to turn his situation around and is holding double training sessions every single day.

Michael Carrick has insisted he is "not surprised" to remain in the Manchester United dugout despite the club enduring their most disastrous start to a league season in four decades. The former England international saw his position come under intense scrutiny this week following a dismal 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Bournemouth.
Carrick looked certain to face the axe following Sunday's humiliating loss against the Cherries. That result extended an abysmal winless streak to eight matches in all competition, cementing the club's worst start to a league campaign in 40 years.
However, crisis talks were held on Monday between the 45-year-old and the United hierarchy. Despite widespread anticipation of a managerial change, the boardroom ultimately opted to keep him at the helm.
This backing comes just months after Carrick penned a new permanent two-year deal in the summer. He had earned the permanent role by securing Champions League football, having originally taken over as a short-term successor to Ruben Amorim in January.
When pressed on his survival, the former midfielder maintained a defiant stance. He insisted his sole focus remains on rectifying the current crisis on the pitch rather than fearing for his job.

Bo Bichette's decision to opt into a second year with the Mets was not a surprise to anyone in the organization. He had one of the worst statistical seasons of his career offensively – not exactly the kind of year players try to ride into free agency. He spoke glowingly of new manager Andy Green. And he seemed to find comfort in the clubhouse and on the New York stage – as if he had arrived with something to prove and finally remembered he was capable of proving it.
But while the Mets have expected for several weeks now that Bichette would be back, his return nevertheless qualifies as crucial to their offseason. With Bichette, the Mets lineup in 2027 will include all the key components of a group that posted the fifth-best OPS in the majors after August 1… even with Juan Soto injured for part of that time.
The top of the order looked versatile and energetic when Francisco Lindor was healthy and leading off and Soto was healthy and hitting second and Bichette was behind them, putting the ball in play with Carson Benge there to drive everyone in. Bichette's return means the Mets can build on the offense they unearthed late last year, rather than having to reconfigure it.
But because Bichette's decision was not a surprise, expectations for the Mets season should not pivot because of it. They still need, and plan to pursue, starting pitching. They will still explore options to upgrade offensively at first base, though exactly how high they will aim – and how much money or prospect capital they are willing to spend there – remains unclear.
And they still seem likely to give one of their infield prospects a chance somewhere in the majors next season. With Bichette back, the most obvious place for a prospect to elbow in would be second, though because Bichette has also played second base, the Mets could make room for a prospect at third.

The first full week of the 2026-27 NBA regular season has come and gone for the Boston Celtics, and it has been a busy one for the storied franchise. The Celtics notched their first three wins of the season against the reigning champion New York Knicks, the Chicago Bulls, and Brooklyn Nets after dropping their season opener to the Detroit Pistons the week prior, for starters.
The beef (or lamb chops and gravy or whatever we want to call it) between Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown not only took on new life, but picked up new combatants. Around the rest of the league, a number of teams have surprised early, others disappointed, and injuries are running rampant across the ******* ociation before we hit the month of November. With the federal budget deficit at $2 trillion and debt-interest costs topping $1 trillion a year, it may be tempting to look for extra cash under the sofa cushions.
Urgency has grown in recent months as Treasury yields have soared to the highest levels in more than 20 years, putting more pressure on interest expenses.
The Treasury Department has tried some unconventional measures recently to take the heat off yields, including buybacks of more long-dated debt and its intervention to prop up the yen that let ***** an avoid selling its Treasuries.
Given such surprises, speculation has grown around even more far-out tactics. One idea that comes up from time to time is for the Treasury Department to price its immense gold holdings at market rates.
The U.S. has the world's largest gold reserves, which total about 261.5 million ounces, or more than double what No. 2 holder Germany has. But the U.S. ***** d's official price was set by Congress in 1973 at $42.22 per ounce, and it hasn't changed since.

Round two of the Ranji Trophy 2026-27 began on Sunday with two Elite Group B sides in early trouble, and each was pulled back into its match by a batter who stayed at the crease.
Karnataka were struggling against Saurashtra at the Alur ground in Bengaluru, while Punjab were reduced to 69 for 3 against Chhattisgarh in New Chandigarh. Manvanth ******* ar delivered the bigger surprise.
The 22-year-old left-hander was playing only his second first-class match, yet he walked in with Karnataka eight down and hit 135 from number nine. Uday Saharan, the Punjab captain, was steadier but just as important, as he finished the first day unbeaten on 106.
Both matches are scheduled to run until Tuesday, October 21, and both innings have already changed the shape of the games. Karnataka were bowled out for 342 on the second day, while Punjab ended the first day on 269 for 4, a long way from where they stood early on.

It's official: Joey Porter Jr. was active for a second game with the Dallas Cowboys, and the Pittsburgh Steelers can finally breathe a sigh of relief with additional draft capital now heading their way.
A big part of the Steelers-Cowboys trade was a conditional sixth-round pick that required Porter to be on Dallas' game-day roster for at least two games, which appeared to be in jeopardy following his surprise absence in Week 5 and concerning ankle injury on the Week 6 practice report. Luckily for the Steelers, Porter was active for the Cowboys' blowout loss to the Green Bay Packers, and Dallas' 2027 sixth-round pick is officially heading to Pittsburgh.
Joey Porter Jr. is active and the Cowboys’ sixth round pick in 2027 is now officially owned by the Steelers with this being the second game Porter is active https://t.co/TqG1mnN1H4
Porter was a solid contributor for Pittsburgh during his three years in the league, slowly cementing himself as one of the league's top man-coverage cornerbacks. Unfortunately, the Steelers and Porter couldn't strike a deal before the start of the regular season, the team's historically self-imposed deadline, which resulted in a huge disconnect between both sides.
After failing to suit up for the Steelers with a "back injury" early in the 2026 season, Porter gave the team no choice but to trade him to any willing suitor, which so happened to be the Cowboys. Porter, however, isn't expected to receive a long-term deal from Dallas at this time and will instead play out the final year of his rookie contract.

Seeking a route back to winning ways after a stunning 4-3 home loss to Club Brugge in midweek Champions League action, Inter head to Stadio Renato Dall'Ara to face Bologna on Saturday. Despite another disappointing result in Europe, the reigning Serie A holders are leading the way in the domestic championship after six rounds.
Except for a dramatic 2-2 draw against Roma on the stroke of the international break, Cristian Chivu's charges have won all five remaining league fixtures this season, including a 3-0 rout of Parma last weekend. However, there's no room for complacency, as they sit level on points with early surprise package Lazio ahead of Saturday's kickoff.
In stark contrast, Bologna have endured a rough start to the season, picking up just two points from the opening five matchdays (D2, L3). It sent a signal to the club that it was time for new boss Domenico Tedesco to go, with Raffaele Palladino taking his place in the dugout just before the international break. The change paid off quickly as the Rossoblu eked out a 2-1 win at Lecce on the Italian's road debut last time out.
Buoyed by last weekend's triumph, Bologna fans are looking forward to Inter's visit, knowing the Nerazzurri have only won one of the last five Serie A meetings between the sides (D2, L2). Real Madrid rediscovered their sparkle with an emphatic thrashing of Sevilla in a clash where Arda Güler took charge, as Madrid fans celebrated Kylian Mbappé's clinical finishing and Yan Diomandé's emergence. However, the victory was not without controversy, with Sevilla furious over the officiating.
The football roundup also features a domestic transfer market stirred by Getafe's ambitions to sign Sergio Ramos, a struggling ******* nal's resilience in the Premier League, and Nico Paz's unstoppable form under Cesc Fàbregas in Italy.
Real Madrid delivered an impressive performance with a 4-1 victory over Sevilla at the Santiago Bernabéu, inspired by a stellar display from Arda Güler. José Mourinho's side showed dramatically improved fluidity to secure a comfortable win, sealed by a brilliant Kylian Mbappé brace and another eye-catching goal from youngster Yan Diomandé, with the Turkish midfielder staking his claim as a cornerstone of Madrid's midfield in the immediate future.
The defeat left the Sevilla camp deeply frustrated as they departed Madrid's home ground, with outrage spreading from the dressing room to the press room and the club's official channels. Coach Luis García Plaza and players including Kike Salas and Juan Iglesias openly argued that Güler should have been sent off for a heavy challenge on Peque, directing their criticism squarely at the handling of VAR.
In transfer news, Getafe once again grabbed the headlines following a surprise admission from president Ángel Torres, who publicly confirmed that Sergio Ramos is on the club's list of potential signings. Having already secured Dani Carvajal—who is ready to make his debut immediately—the Coliseum club's board is seeking another historic, headline-grabbing coup in Spanish football by strengthening its defence with the veteran former Real Madrid centre-back.

Buffalo Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was ejected from the Bills' Week 6 win over the Las Vegas Raiders for spitting on Raiders tight end Brock Bowers.
San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk chimed in and said this isn't new for the 28-year-old and accused Gardner-Johnson of spitting on him during the 49ers' win over the Chicago Bears last season.
"This is the least surprising thing ever," Juszczyk posted on Twitter above a clip of the ejection. "(Gardner-Johnson) spit on me last year when we beat Chicago."
Gardner-Johnson pleaded his case to officials that he wasn't spitting on Bowers, but it was clear he did something in the direct vicinity of the TE that caused an official to immediately throw a flag and eject the eight-year veteran.
It's also not a surprise Juszczyk and Gardner-Johnson had a dustup last year. Gardner-Johnson and the 49ers have a bit of history starting in 2019 when Gardner-Johnson was a rookie in New Orleans for an epic 48-46 win for San Francisco. In that game Gardner-Johnson was hit with a 15-yard penalty for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Juszczyk.

After his team's first loss of the 2026-27 season last month, Juventus manager Luciano Spalletti received a fair bit of heat for how the Bianconeri totally lost its balance against Sassuolo. After their second loss of the season, Sunday's 3-0 defeat at the hand of surprise package Lazio at the Allianz Stadium in Turin, the heat has seemingly been turned up to a degree in which Spalletti hasn't seen since the final weeks of the 2025-26 campaign when Champions League qualification was slipping away.
And it sounds like, in some ways, Spalletti could see a little bit of the writing on the wall.
Amongst the many critiques that Spalletti — who was suspended for Sunday's loss as a result of his red card last weekend against Cagliari — had of his team's performance during his post-game media responsibilities, It was an answer to his current relationship with the team that raised plenty of eyebrows. Spalletti responded to the question "Until yesterday, I thought I could say yes, then today I probably don't know …" — something that will surely fuel speculation about just how much longer he might have on the Juventus sideline if his team continues to play the way they did against Lazio on Sunday night.
The quote, via multiple outlets, in English is as follows:
"If instead of improving we get worse, I have to do in-depth ****** ysis, especially on myself. Does the team still follow me? Until yesterday, I thought I could say yes, then today I probably don't know. I have a good relationship with them, I always want to share, that's how I am."

STOCKHOLM, Oct 8 (Reuters) - Canadian poet and writer Anne Carson won the 2026 **** el Prize in Literature "for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature", the Swedish Academy said on Thursday.

The stock market has its dips, but historically, Apple (APPL) stock has done well for investors. As of Oct. 1, it traded for $330.32 — a nearly 30% yearly increase, according to Yahoo Finance. Take it back further to 2016, and the stock has gone up by a little over 1,063%.
As a new investor, you might be thinking Apple stock is the perfect buy. However, as with any other investment, it's not without risk. These are some of the most common mistakes investors make when buying stocks, according to financial advisors Ed Peagler and Xintian **** .
As per J.P. Morgan, the general advice when it comes to stocks is to put no more than 10% to 20% of your total portfolio in one stock. Of course, when you see the numbers rising on a particular stock, it's easy to get excited and make investment choices based on that.
This can be a mistake, though.
"Apple is a spectacular company that most people already know and love. It's no surprise, then, that many individuals end up with too large a position in their overall portfolio. And they don't feel like they have a high concentration stock because it's Apple. They trust it," said Xintian **** , CPA, senior tax manager at Alexander Accountants, CPAs. "But high concentration is high concentration. And it amplifies the risk of an unsafe, underestimated stock."
