The 20th-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes roll into Week 3 after claiming the Cy-Hawk Trophy with a 16-13 win over Iowa State from Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City.
After falling behind 10-0 early, Iowa knotted the game back up by halftime thanks to a 1-yard Hank Brown touchdown run and a Caden Buhr field goal. Buhr would add two more field goal makes in the second half, including his game-winning, 42-yarder with just 15 seconds remaining.

The Iowa Hawkeyes flipped the script on the Cyclones, winning this year's CyHawk game on a late field goal to pull out a 16-13 win. It was a scrappy, ugly, sometimes dirty game that was pretty much in line to how this series has gone these last ten years. But the Hawkeyes exorcised the demons of the last two years with a Caden Burr field goal from 42 yards out with :15 seconds left to bring the CyHawk trophy back home to Iowa City.
After last week's performance against NIU and with a brand new regime in Ames, many expected this to be a much more comfortable game for the Hawkeyes, especially under the lights in Kinnick Stadium with a raucous crowd. But Iowa State put Iowa into an early 10-0 hole midway through the second quarter that had the black and gold faithful starting to get that "here we go again" familiar feeling. But the offense managed to come to life, thanks to a massive 56-yard bomb to Tony Diaz that set up a Hank Brown touchdown run late the first half. A huge 45-yard Buhr field goal right before halftime reset the score and setting up a grinding second half of football.
Neither team had a great first quarter. Iowa started with the ball but procedural penalties doomed their drive. Meanwhile the Hawkeye defense held the Cyclones to only six plays in the quarter. Iowa State managed to move the chains in the second quarter with drives of nine and ten plays that ended on a Kyle Konrardy field goal and 7-yard Jalen Raynor touchdown pass, respectively. Raynor's stat line tonight won't impress anyone: 10/19 for 117 yards, and no touchdowns with some crucial misfires on potential big plays. But aside from those misses he made no back breaking mistakes that allowed the Iowa defense to capitalize.

Iowa State regained their momentum coming out of the break with an eight play drive that ended with another Konrardy field goal. Running back Aiden Flora had the play of the drive with a 34-yard scamper down to the Iowa 19, but holding and illegal substitution penalties stalled the drive leading to the Konrardy kick to put ISU up 13-10. Iowa's offense went in to hibernation as they could not get Kamari Moulton going on the ground, the Cyclones were clearly committed to stopping the run and it worked for much of the game. Iowa's first three drives of the second half went for only 21 yards (four plays), 8 yards (3 plays), and -5 yards (3 playes, not helped by a holding penalty on Dotzler). Woof.

Saturday night is the battle for the Cy-Hawk Trophy! Iowa (1-0) hosts Iowa State (1-0) in Kinnick Stadium for their annual rivalry game. For the first time in over a decade, there is a double digit spread in this matchup and it favors the seasoned Hawkeyes.
Iowa State rolls into this season in his first year under Jimmy Rogers. The Cyclones brought in over 80 newcomers, so this team is very new to the physicality and hatred in this rivalry. Iowa State beat Southeast Missouri State 38-10 in the season opener, outgaining the Redhawks 303-209 and forced three turnovers. Josh Raynor made his first start as Iowa State's quarterback and he went 8-of-16 for 184 passing yards and two touchdowns, plus 42 rushing yards on seven carries and two more scores.
Iowa played three different quarterbacks in their dominant 40-0 win over Northern Illinois. The Hawkeyes combined for 218 passing yards, two touchdowns, and one interceptions on 21-of-40 (52.5%). In front of a sold-out Kinnick Stadium, the Hawkeyes completely dominated Northern Illinois on their way to a 40-0 victory. Kirk Ferentz's team took care of business in all three phases of the game to help Iowa open the season with a win. Despite the caliber of the opponent, there was still a lot to like and learn from this game.
The Hawkeyes may have found a winner in the highly contested starting quarterback battle. Phil Parker's defense showed out. And Iowa's return game seems to be in a really good spot. Here's the complete list of takeaways from Iowa's stomping of the Huskies on Saturday.
All eyes were on the Iowa quarterbacks on Saturday. And both guys showed off some good stuff. Hank Brown went 12-of-20 for 129 yards and a touchdown. He didn't play a snap in the second half. The 6-foot-4 signal caller had zip on his passes and made great reads. He has a great arm, which led to a few overthrows and missed opportunities. Outside of those, this was an excellent season debut for Brown.
Jeremy Hecklinski finished the game going 7-of-16 for 76 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. He displayed a good rapport with the tight ends and Reece Vander Zee. Like Brown, he missed a few golden opportunities. He also threw a pick in the end zone on a fourth-and-goal. It was far from perfect, but Hecklinski still showed some promise.

Fourth-year quarterback Hank Brown got the start and the Nashville, Tenn., product did not disappoint. Brown was sharp as he directed touchdown drives on each of the Hawkeyes' first three possessions.
Brown finished 12 of 20 passing for 129 yards with a touchdown pass. The 6-foot-4, 218-pound signal-caller made Kirk Ferentz and Tim Lester's decision to tab him as the season-opening starter look like a great one. Transfer receiver Tony Diaz impressed and veteran back Kamari Moulton ran wild.
Iowa's defense was just magnificent as NIU could do nothing offensively all day long. The Hawkeyes also came up with a pair of turnovers.

AMES — The Jimmy Rogers era began on a positive note as Iowa State football routed Southeast Missouri State, 38-10, in the season-opener at Jack Trice Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 5.
The Cyclones jumped to a 14-0 lead and held a 28-7 edge at the half. They never relented from there.
Quarterback Jaylen Raynor completed 8-of-16 passes for 184 yards, two passing touchdowns and two rushing touchdowns. Aiden Flora added a rushing touchdown. Easton Miller and Vince Benetti each caught touchdown passes. The Cyclones defense tallied six sacks, led by defensive end Isaac Terrell.

If you're a fan of offense and the forward pass, it was hard to leave Kinnick last Saturday and not feel pretty good. The same can be said for those that weren't able to make it in person but have spent the last several days re-watching every throw from QB Jeremy Hecklinski.
The former Wake Forest transfer looked as good as perhaps any Iowa QB has looked at an open practice in the 25+ years we've had head coach Kirk Ferentz in Iowa City. Pair that with the genuine buzz going around with UT-Rio Grande Valley transfer WR Tony Diaz, the emergence of Furman transfer WR Evan James and the return of 2025's leading receiver TE DJ Vonnahme and this passing attack looks poised to be a legitimate threat for the first time in several years.
That's all good news.
Unless you're Kirk Ferentz. Not that KF doesn't want the offense to be good or for the Hawkeyes to be a genuine threat in the passing game. The issue for the head man is that Iowa has been operating in a full on QB battle since the departure of Mark Gronowski.
If you aren't at practice on a regular basis and have just last Saturday to go on, that battle seems over. OVER. Hecklinski was sensational and Hank Brown looked even worse than he did in his spot duty a season ago (as a quick refresher, he finished 2025 completing 52% of his passes with one TD and one INT, but in his one game with meaningful snaps he went 5 of 13 passing for only 48 yards with one INT, no TDs and one massive missed screen pass). It was clear to anyone with eyes that Hecklinski should be the guy.

Cy-Hawk week comes early. Iowa State rolls into Kinnick in week two on September 12 with a new head coach, a new roster and back-to-back Cy-Hawk wins. The Hawkeyes will no doubt have a chip on their shoulder and be looking for their first win in Kinnick in the series since 2018 (yes, really). Let's break it down.
The 2025 Cyclones went 8-4 overall, 5-4 in the Big 12. By most measures it was a successful year. Iowa State opened the season with a marquee international game victory, defeating #17 Kansas State 24-21 in Dublin to win Farmageddon. They proceeded to make it back-to-back wins in the Cy-Hawk with a 16-13 win over the Hawkeyes in Ames. That's enough for most ISU fans to call it a successful year.
But the Cyclones hit a major drought, dropping four straight games in the middle of the year, including in their only other game against a ranked opponent vs #11 BYU at home. They finished the regular season with road wins over TU and Oklahoma State with a bowl opportunity awaiting them at season's end.
Then everything hit the fan in Ames.
ISU's ten-year leader and virtual savior of the program, Matt Campbell, accepted the Penn State head coaching job on December 5. The Cyclones, in the immediate aftermath of losing their head coach, voted to decline their bowl invitation citing player injuries and the obvious disruption of the program. The program walked into the offseason with no head coach, no bowl game and a roster that was about to completely turn over.

As the 2026 college football season swiftly approaches, USA TODAY Sports revealed their full Big Ten stadium rankings for the 18-member conference.
While there is no true way to compose a ranking outside of a subjective nature, the Big Ten's expansive list of historic venues certainly makes its difficult to appease all fan bases.
One could lean into the capacity, historic significance, or even the overall fit on campus. That being said, Kinnick Stadium earns its proper due as one of the league's top venues.

A second Iowa home football game this fall has officially sold out.
Last week, the Hawkeyes' Week 2 matchup against Iowa State at Kinnick Stadium sold out. On Monday, the other in-state game on Iowa's schedule became a sellout.
The program took to social media to announce that its Week 3 game against Northern Iowa is now sold out.
This will be the first meeting between the two schools since 2018, when the Hawkeyes won 38-14. Iowa leads the all-time series, 7-0, but it hasn't always been blowouts. Most notably, in 2009, Kirk Ferentz's team had to block two field goals at the end of the game to escape with a 17-16 victory. Iowa is the favorite, but this won't be a cakewalk.
Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT on Sept. 19 for this game. Iowa-UNI will air on FS1. Limited tickets remain available for Iowa's other five home games this season.

Iowa basketball is getting one of its top targets in the 2027 class on campus this fall.
Per On3's Joe Tipton, five-star point guard Cayden Daughtry will take an official visit to Iowa on Sept. 12, which coincides with the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series football game between Iowa and Iowa State at Kinnick Stadium.
Daughtry, a 6-foot, 160-pound point guard from Calvary Christian Academy in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., is a five-star prospect, per the 247Sports composite rankings. In the 247Sports composite, Daughtry ranks as the No. 16 player nationally, as the No. 4 point guard and as the No. 4 player in Florida.
According to ESPN, Daughtry is the No. 12 prospect nationally, the No. 4 point guard and the top player in Florida. Daughtry is rated as the No. 22 player nationally, as the No. 7 point guard and as the No. 4 player in the Sunshine State, per Rivals.
The Hawkeyes offered Daughtry on July 12, 2025, and are viewed as one of the top contenders for his commitment, alongside schools such as Michigan, Miami and Florida State. Daughtry also holds offers from fellow power programs such as BYU, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisville, Ohio State, Penn State, Rutgers, UConn and Villanova.

As the weather warms up and the days get longer, summer is here. That also means college football is right around the corner.
It's now less than three months until Iowa returns to Kinnick Stadium for the 2026 season. And with the season fast approaching, preseason award and accolade predictions are being released.
The first major list to drop came from Phil Steele on Monday. The longtime college football writer released his annual preseason All-Conference and All-American teams, and plenty of Hawkeyes were littered throughout.
In total, five Hawkeyes were listed across Steele's four All-Big Ten preseason teams. Junior offensive lineman Kade Pieper was on the first team; junior offensive lineman Trevor Lauck and junior defensive back Zach Lutmer were on the second team; junior kicker Eli Ozick was on the third team; and sophomore tight end DJ Vonnahme was on the fourth team.
Two Hawkeyes were named to Steele's All-American teams. Pieper was a preseason first-team All-American, while Lutmer slotted in as a third-team preseason All-American.

Minnesota completed its second straight 8-5 season, thanks to an overtime win over New Mexico in the Rate Bowl. Their most notable wins from the season include a snowy 17-7 win over bitter rival Wisconsin for Paul Bunyan’s Axe and a 24-6 beatdown of a then 25th-ranked Nebraska team, which almost immediately blew up the “Matt Rhule-to-Penn State” hype train. Unfortunately for the Gophers, their other two games against ranked opponents ended rather poorly, suffering a 42-3 shellacking at No.1 Ohio State and a 42-13 beatdown at 7th-ranked Oregon. They also got waxed 41-3 against their other bitter rival, Iowa at Kinnick Stadium and lost a close one at Northwestern, 38-35. Overall though, for program standards under PJ Fleck’s tenure, it was about par for the course.
