Germany have broken Brazil's record for total goals scored by a nation in the history of the World Cup following their 7-1 win over Curacao.
The 2026 contest held across the United States, Canada and Mexico was already a record-breaking tournament in terms of size.
With 48 teams, it is comfortably the largest World Cup in history, introducing a 50% increase from the 32 teams that have participated since the 1998 World Cup in France.
But there are plenty more records that could be broken this year, including the most minutes played, most individual goals and most team goals if Brazil re-take the **** le from Germany.
Here is a look at some of the current World Cup record holders and how their place in the history books could be affected in the coming weeks.

Sloan Wasserman entered rarified air at last month's Loucks Games by moving into the No. 11 all-time spot in the country in the girls 2,000-meter steeplechase.
Her 6:41.07 time was and remained No. 1 in the country this spring.
That is until Sunday.
That's when, competing at Webster Schroeder High School in her last outdoor state track and field championship, the John Jay-Cross River High School senior beat her nearest opponent by nearly 10 seconds (Tri Valley Class C champion Anna Furman) to win the girls state Federation - private and public schools of all sizes - as well as the girls public Class B ****** le, and to further move up the ladder in Section 1 and national history.
Wasserman's 6:38.36 time ****** ped former North Rockland standout Alex Harris (6:38.47 in 2017) from the No. 10 all-time national and No. 2 all-time Section 1 rankings.

I found myself standing in line for a hotdog at Classic Park. But I wasn’t there for a Lake County Captains game. No, I was there for the NCAA DIII Baseball Championship. Denison was playing Endicott in the second game of a three-game series, with Denison having won the first, 6-0. Today we had the second game, with a double-header being played if necessary. I couldn’t miss all that action taking place at Classic Park.
My final college decision actually came down to Kenyon College and Denison. I visited both on the same day and went to Denison first. I walked all around the beautiful campus and talked to the head track coach about pole vaulting there. And when I left, I thought I was going to run track for Denison. But in the end, Kenyon gave me more scholarship money so I went there instead. It was one of the worst decisions of my life, but an important life-lesson not to let money control me. And there’s still a part of me that wonders what would have been if I’d gone to Denison instead.
As I waited in line, there was a bit of a commotion from behind me as someone hurriedly pushed their way toward the counter through the current of moving bodies. A vibrant, coffee-fueled voice shot out, “Make it 2 hotdogs and a coffee — black!”
I spun around, and there was Gus in all his glory. The red flannel, the crooked ‘C’ cap, and that gray handlebar mustache.

United Football League co-owner Mike Repole made a few headlines the other day at a press conference discussing his league.
Repole may have let it slip that the NFL may be ready to expand again and add two more expansion teams.
According to Pro Football Talk ******* yst Mike Florio, although nothing has been said, Repole may have the inside scoop on the situation because of his business partnership with Tom Brady.
"As far as anyone knows on the outside, the NFL isn’t talking about adding teams. Given that Repole may be in a position to pick up some inside information (he and Tom Brady are partners in ******* ull, for example), Repole may have heard something that wasn’t yet intended for public consumption."
Florio continued, "Regardless, the NFL’s quest for more inventory eventually will pivot from adding more weeks to the season to adding more teams to the league. Either Repole, who delivered the information as if it were factual, is woefully misinformed, or he inadvertently let the cat out of the bag."

George Kittle is at the World Cup, and he noticed something.
Attending a match at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, Kittle took to X to share his thoughts on the playing surface:
Your first guess might be that this is a jab at Levi’s Stadium. The field has been re-sodded repeatedly over the years, players have complained about divots flying up mid-play, and Denver Broncos players called the surface “terrible” after Super Bowl 50. It got much better as time went on, thankfully.
Kittle has been positive about the surface at Levi’s. He has also been one of the louder voices on the subject of NFL playing surfaces. Back in 2022, Kittle made a point after an injury-marred victory over the Carolina Panthers, saying, “I’d much rather play on grass. That’s why I love Jed York. We have the nicest grass in the NFL.”
SoFi has turf. And Kittle’s recent post could be less on his home field and more on the teams that play on turf year-round. MetLife Stadium, which has claimed a number of 49ers players with its turf (including Mykel Williams in 2025), is one place where a grass surface could reduce the risk of injury.
