Republican efforts to reduce national gas prices in the weeks before Election Day were derailed in the Senate by infighting among GOP lawmakers and members of the administration who could not agree on how to ease consumers’ pain at the pump.
The divisions within the Senate Republican conference over how to lower gas and diesel prices — even if temporarily — were driven primarily by geographic differences.
Senators from oil-refining states shot down proposals from farm-state senators to ban the export of diesel or to loosen restrictions on the sale of E15 gasoline with higher ethanol content.
“You’re talking about regional politics, and it gets bogged down in the politics of energy, and the fiefdoms around it,” said Ron Bonjean, a GOP strategist and former Senate leadership aide.
There were divisions that went beyond geography, too.

A TikToker says many single ladies ask her how to find and keep a good husband, and she gets offended when the creator shares her thoughts.
In her TikTok post, she recounted an encounter where a single lady asked her this question.
The creator, matrixunni, follows a traditional approach to relationship counseling. According to her, ladies should work on themselves to become better companions in marriage. She also suggests finding guys who are stronger in the areas where a lady feels lacking, and focusing on men's emotional stability and commitment rather than material aspects.
Matrixunni, 27, says her marriage is the main reason women visit her channel for advice.
"As a 27-year-old woman that is married to literally the love of my life, like, when people are around us, they know that we are meant to be," Matrixunni said in the video. "When they see me, they see him. When they see him, they see me. We have literally morphed and become one for real, right?"

Ukraine on Thursday accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilians after 30 people were killed when two buses were blown up in the frontline city of Kramatorsk, in one of the deadliest single attacks for weeks.
Photos posted by local authorities showed the burnt-out metal shell of the vehicles, with the blurred-out images of bodies and debris strewn across the road.
Police said the buses were hit with a glide bomb.
The strikes come just a day after five children were among 22 killed when a Russian missile struck a five-storey apartment block in Pryluky, in the northern Chernigiv region.
"The Russians are deliberately targeting civilians," Donetsk Governor Vadym Filashkin said, accusing Moscow of flouting "every conceivable rule of warfare and norm of international humanitarian law".

The move aimed to lower costs for farmers weeks before the midterm elections.
President Donald Trump has issued an executive order that makes a specific kind of tax-exempt diesel fuel reserved for farm and construction equipment available to a broad set of road vehicles in an effort to reduce overall diesel costs.
The type of diesel, known as dyed diesel, is exempt from a 24.4-cent per gallon federal tax, making it a lower-priced option than regular diesel. Some states expanded access to dyed diesel in a similar fashion over recent weeks, providing relief from state diesel taxes.
Dyed diesel is nearly identical to regular diesel, besides a small amount of dye used by law enforcement officers and inspectors to ensure only permitted vehicle owners avail themselves of the fuel.
The executive order on Monday came weeks ahead of the midterm elections, targeting costs ****** ociated with a fuel vital to the supply chain for everything from groceries to clothing to electronics.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order Monday evening temporarily allowing the use of red-dyed diesel on public roads and deferring the federal excise tax on that fuel through the end of the year, a move aimed at lowering costs for truckers and farmers facing record-high diesel prices.
Red-dyed diesel is chemically the same product as standard highway diesel, but carries a red dye to mark it as off-road fuel — meaning it is not subject to the 24.4-cent-per-gallon federal excise tax that applies to diesel sold at the pump for road use, such as for tractors and heavy machinery. Using it in highway vehicles has been illegal, carrying penalties for tax evasion, according to CNBC.
According to the White House, the order instructs the Treasury Secretary to hold off on collecting federal excise taxes on highway use of dyed diesel between October 5 and December 31, 2026, and to do so without charging interest or imposing penalties. The Treasury is also directed to direct the Internal Revenue Service not to impose penalties for on-road use of dyed diesel during that period. The order further instructs officials to explore pathways, including legislation, to eliminate the deferred tax obligations entirely.
The White House projected that a trucker who tops off an 18-wheeler's tank with 250 gallons stands to save over $100 on a single fill-up, provided the trucker's state suspends its own diesel tax as well. On top of the federal levy, each state levies its own diesel excise tax, and those state-level taxes average out to 35.5 cents per gallon, according to CNN.
The order also directs the Secretary of Agriculture to coordinate with agricultural cooperatives and rural fuel distributors to ensure adequate dyed diesel distribution in high-demand areas, and the Secretary of Transportation to engage with state governments and industry stakeholders. The White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs was directed to encourage states to adopt corresponding policies.

James Trevena may be playing a romantic leading man for Hallmark, but his real-life love story started long before he put on Sir Griffin de Beauford's armor. His longtime partner is Ivana Baquero, the Spanish actress who played Ofelia in Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth.
The 40-year-old stars opposite Julie Gonzalo in A Knight to Remember, which premiered Oct. 3. His relationship with Baquero has lasted more than a decade, according to TV Insider's Swooon.
Trevena accompanied Baquero to the Oct. 1 Los Angeles screening marking Pan's Labyrinth's 20th anniversary, according to Just Jared.
Baquero was 11 when she played the film's young heroine. In a 2014 interview with the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, she recalled drawing on her own experiences and feelings to understand the character at an age when she had little formal technique to rely on.
A year before their relationship began, Baquero had told the university that she was hesitant about committing to television. A series would require a longer stretch of her time than a film, complicating her other projects and law studies. She had chosen distance learning because acting regularly took her away from home.

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Belgian-born scientist Francis Halzen won the ***** el Prize in physics Tuesday for his efforts to demystify a rare group of neutrinos, tiny cosmic particles that researchers believe offer clues to how the universe evolved.
"It was a great surprise, and I obviously didn't expect it," Halzen said, speaking to the ***** el Physics Committee by phone from Italy, in a call broadcast at the news conference to announce the winner.
Halzen said it was predicted that he would win the prize, but the announcement still made him feel "strange."
"I am working on a proposal, and I hope that this prize will help getting it approved," he said to chuckles from the audience.
Neutrinos are tiny cosmic particles with no electrical charge and extraordinarily small mass, making them difficult to detect. Yet they are everywhere: They spew from stars like the sun, and trillions zip through our bodies every second.

Paloma Elsesser thinks that the glamorization of Ozempic and similar weight-loss drugs isn't a good thing for society as a whole.
The 34-year-old model, who became the first plus-size model to win Model of the Year at the Fashion Awards in 2023, made an appearance on Vogue's The Run-Through podcast and suggested the rise of Ozempic can be correlated to the rise of "conservative" and "anti-woke" rhetoric. "I think the Ozempic era that we're talking about is harmful because it kind of takes away the agency to live in the way that I would hope people and women and young girls and young people can think about their bodies in this world," she shared. Around the 32-minute point of the podcast, which can be seen above.
Elssesser also said that she's seen a rise in "pro-eating disorder content" on platforms such as TikTok, which is especially worrying considering so many young people have unfiltered access to such content.
"II think people are just being like, 'Okay, this is not it,'" she continued. "We're seeing celebrities and people… I think people are upset. … I think that women should have agency. I am critical of applying my body, your body, your choice to this conversation because it's like… 'Is it your choice?' It's not. It's a prescription, so it doesn't actually feel like a choice. … I don't know, maybe I said something problematic. … The number one central tenet, like, anything that I try and live and encourage is to just think critically, not be critical."

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Group of Seven wealthy democracies said Friday that they plan to release 100 million barrels of oil and fuel products in the coming weeks, starting with "substantial" amounts of diesel after the fuel recently hit record high prices in the United States.
President Donald Trump said the diesel release would happen "immediately," echoing a G7 promise to start "immediately" with a "frontloaded substantial release" of diesel within the next 20 days and the rest over four months.
Trump and his Republican Party face pressure to address surging prices ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections, and Trump announced the action Friday on social media. The president's approval ratings on the economy hit a new low, according to an AP-NORC poll, as the Iran war and his trade battles have increased U.S. prices for oil and other goods.
Gas prices in the U.S. and abroad have soared during the eight-month-long war, a cost Trump has repeatedly said is worth it for making sure Iran does not obtain nuclear weapons. The national average for a gallon of diesel in the U.S. was $6.37 on Friday, according to AAA, after hitting a record $6.52 on Sept. 22. Diesel prices have hit records in Europe, too.
France holds the rotating presidency of the G7 group and made the announcement in a statement released after videoconference talks that Macron presided over. The G7 countries are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, ******* an, the U.K. and the U.S., plus EU representation.
