Aug. 14—The letter was still in Hillsboro resident Evan Kitchens' hands when he read it aloud a second time, just to make sure he had gotten it right.
Evan had been selected to compete in the Special Olympics USA Games at the University of Minnesota.
"You should have seen our faces when we saw it together," he said.
His mother, Melissa Kitchens, had gotten the letter first and handed it straight to him.
"He read it like two or three times just to fully register he was going," she said. "Then he immediately had to start preparing. He had to get a headshot, sign ESPN waivers, get a physical."

LAWRENCE — Marian Washington is a Kansas women's basketball icon.
The Jayhawks' all-time winningest head coach led that KU program for 31 seasons from 1973 to 2004. She enjoyed 11 NCAA tournament appearances, many conference ***** les and more. She was also an ***** et to the athletic department in other ways, too.
And on Saturday, Aug. 15 in Springfield, Massachusetts, Washington will be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame for her role with the 1996 women's national team for USA Basketball. Washington was an ***** istant coach for Stanford's Tara VanDerveer for the Olympics that year. According to a release from Kansas athletics, Washington became "the first female African American coach on a USA Olympic Basketball coaching staff."

OSHKOSH – Indiana Pacers guard and Oshkosh North alum Tyrese Haliburton was back in the Oshkosh North gym on a summer day. It was like he was back in elementary school or middle school just at another basketball camp.
But this time, at the CareSource Tyrese Haliburton Impact Camp, campers wore shirts with Haliburton's likeness on them in Indiana Pacers colors.
"I grew up going to North basketball camp from the time I was in first grade to the rest of my life essentially," Haliburton said. "I have a lot of memories in this gym, so I keep joking with these kids, I'm like, 'If there's anywhere I feel like I'm not going to miss it's in this building right here.'"

The Great Britain women's team have progressed as group winners at the flag football World Championships as they aim to secure an Olympic spot.
The event in Germany is the first where teams can qualify for Los Angeles 2028, when the non-contact version of American football will make its Olympics debut.
GB women, who are ranked third in the world and are the two-time defending European champions, beat France (33-14) and China (26-25) in their opening two group games on Thursday.
GB then claimed a 47-26 win over Austria on Friday to ensure they went through to the knockout stage as group winners.
If they beat Panama in the quarter-finals on Saturday (09:30 BST) they could face defending champions the USA in the semis later that day.

There might not be a more athletic couple in American sports than Trinity Rodman and Ben Shelton. The Washington Spirit and USWNT star and the two-time reigning Canadian Open men's tennis champion have been together since early 2025 and are regularly seen supporting each other in action.
This week, Rodman appeared on Kylie Kelce's "Not Gonna Lie" podcast, where she revealed that her and Shelton's love story has a typically modern beginning. The two met online, with the 24-year-old Rodman making the first move.
"Everything I do is just embarrassing. I'm really embarrassed," a laughing Rodman told Kelce. "I said 'You're sick, fire emoji…It worked. He responded within 10 minutes, so I win."

Italy's Sara Curtis set a new world record in the women's 50-meter backstroke Wednesday at the European Aquatics Championships, finishing in 26.63 seconds in the event's semifinals to lower the mark by nearly a quarter of a second.
Australia's Kaylee McKeown owned the previous mark of 26.86, set in Budapest, Hungary, in October 2023. McKeown, the United States' Katharine Berkoff and Curtis have all threatened the record since. Curtis clocked 27.07 seconds in June, tied for the ninth-best time ever for the race.

"Since the Olympics, I've been suffering from reoccurring post concussive symptoms- which has made it impossible to prepare and train for the upcoming season. Therefore, I will not be competing for the 2026/27 season. If all goes well I hope to be back in a sled before the end of the Winter season, but time will tell. There will be time later to discuss details, but for now- I start intensive therapy today so if you see me around and I'm not my normal personable self- it's definitely not you- rehab is very very demanding. I love everyone who has supported me all these years and always love to meet you and take pictures- just forgive me if I'm not my best self at the moment. I will be soon...recovery in progress."
At the Milan Cortina Games, Meyers Taylor won the monobob to become, at age 41, the oldest individual event gold medalist in Winter Olympic history.
It was her sixth career medal, tying retired speed skater Bonnie Blair for the most Winter Olympic medals for an American woman.

The 20-year-old Moultrie, who joined the Thorns in 2021 and has made 79 starts for the club, has been placed on the Season-Ending Injury (SEI) list. Through 16 games this season, she scored five goals and registered five ******* ists.
"Olivia is one of the most driven players I have been around, and she will use that drive during her recovery and rehabilitation," said Thorns president and general manager of soccer operations Jeff Agoos. "She has our full support and every resource this club can put behind her."
Internationally, Moultrie has represented the United States 18 times since getting her first call up in 2023. She has scored five times in three USWNT victories.

Ben Simmons is set to be a full participant without any restrictions at a player-led minicamp for the Australian men's basketball team this week, according to ESPN's Marc J. Spears.
Simmons is an Australian native and is working to make the team for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. He's played for the Boomers twice in his career at the 2013 FIBA Men's Oceania Championships when he was 17, but he missed the next three Olympics.
The private minicamp will start on Monday in Melbourne. Simmons, per the report, paid his own way to attend.
Simmons, who the Philadelphia 76ers selected with the No. 1 overall pick back in 2016, has struggled in recent years. He last played for the Los Angeles Clippers in 2025, but only appeared in 23 total games and was rather unproductive. He then missed all of last season while recovering from various injuries. At one point, Simmons even said he'd play for the 76ers again for free, given the opportunity.
Simmons hasn't played in more than 60 games in a season since the 2018-19 campaign while battling injuries. According to Simmons' godfather David Patrick, who is both an **** istant at Arizona State and for the Australian national team, Simmons has regained his athleticism.

Hezly Rivera rallied perfectly on Sunday to claim her second straight U.S. women's gymnastics ****** le.
Rivera, after starting the final day of competition in fourth, ended up beating the field by more than a full point in Phoenix to win her second consecutive national ****** le. She is now the first woman to go back-to-back in the competition since Jordyn Wieber pulled the feat off in 2010 and 2011, excluding Simone Biles' dominant run in the sport, of course.
Rivera was just about perfect on Sunday. The 18-year-old posted a 56.950 in the second day to get to 111.950 on the weekend. While starting more than a point back, Rivera narrowed the gap to half of a point after the first two rotations. It was then her floor routine, where she earned a 14.300, that finally sent her into the lead.
Rivera made her Olympics debut at the Paris games last summer, where she helped the Americans win gold as a team for the third time in the past four competitions. She also defended her beam ****** le this weekend.
Claire Pease finished in second at 110.800 while claiming the uneven bars ****** le, and Charleigh Bullock, 16, came in third at 110.550. El Tri beat the United States, 2-0, in the final of the Concacaf U-20 Championship in the final at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Sunday, Aug. 9.
The final was mostly for pride, with both teams already qualified for the U-20 World Cup and each side already having their place in the 2028 Olympics secured thanks to the U.S. hosting that tournament and Mexico having defeated Canada in the semifinal to secure the other Concacaf place.
Mexico scored a pair of goals on set pieces to win the ***** le and defend the crown from the 2024 tournament when it beat the U.S. in León with a dramatic rally that saw a late goal and an extra-time win.

Richard, an Olympic and World Championships bronze medalist, totaled 170.015 points between two nights of competition at the Xfinity U.S. Championships.

NEW YORK — Sabrina Ionescu is shifting her focus to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics Games after not making the cut for the 12-woman FIBA World Cup squad, which is set to begin group play next month.
And the Liberty star had no hard feelings on the decision to leave her off this year's World Cup roster.
"I mean, not — kind of — but not really," Ionescu said when asked if she was surprised when she learned of not making the team. "I know I kind of dealt with some injuries. Obviously, there's so much talent. You kind of never know. It could go any way. So I don't know if 'surprised' is the right word. Yeah, it just is what it is."
The rosters became official on Thursday with Ionescu's Liberty teammate — Breanna Stewart — being one of the headliners on the roster. Stewart will be joined by these stars for the tournament, which is set for Sept. 4-13 in Berlin:

SISTERON, France (AP) — Defending champion Pauline Ferrand-Prévôt pulled out of the Women's Tour de France ahead of Saturday's eighth and penultimate stage after feeling unwell.
The French rider's Visma-Lease a Bike team said on X that the decision to pull her out of the race was made after consultation with the team's medical staff.
"Unfortunately, Pauline was not feeling well this morning," the team said. "It has been decided that she will not start today. We wish Pauline a speedy recovery."
An Olympic champion in mountain biking at the Paris Olympics in 2024, she won the Women's Tour de France on her debut last year.

Mexico's men's soccer team will return to the Olympics in 2028, booking a place in the Los Angeles Games with a 2-1 victory over Canada in the semifinal of the Concacaf U-20 Championship on Friday, Aug. 7 in Mexico City.
Since the 2028 host nation, the United States, arrived in the final of the U-20 tournament earlier Friday with a 2-0 win over Costa Rica, the Mexico-Canada semifinal put a direct berth to the Olympics on the line.

The pads are clacking as we're in the thick of Las Vegas Raiders training camp. Now that the "underwear Olympics"—as head coach Klint Kubiak referred to the first week of practice—are over, the Raiders' position battles are starting to heat up like the Las Vegas weather. Also, we're officially a week away from the Raiders' first preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals! That gives us plenty to go over for this week's mailbag.

TORONTO (AP) — Coco Gauff understands the reasoning behind the WTA Tour's newly introduced gene-testing policy. What the two-time Grand Slam champion doesn't favor is how politicized the discussion becomes in generating what Gauff called, "animosity towards the trans community."
To her, the topic requires a more nuanced conversation, which is why Gauff provided what she called a nuanced answer, in speaking to reporters at the Canadian Open in Toronto following her opening-match win over Kayla Day on Wednesday.
"So, yes, I guess I kind of agree with trying to protect the fairness in women's sports. But I also do not like the attack that it is creating," Gauff said. "People who don't really care, but just want to use this as a reason to attack the trans community — so I'm not really a big fan of that either."
Her comments come in response to the Women's Tennis ******* ociation last month introducing one-off mandatory gene-testing for all players as a requirement to compete at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Players are being tested for the SRY gene, a segment of DNA typically found on the Y chromosome that initiates male ******* development in utero and indicates the presence of testes.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump on Thursday, Aug. 6, is set to host more than 120 athletes who competed for Team USA in the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games in Milano Cortina, Italy, according to the White House.
The evening celebration, which will take place at the White House Rose Garden, is scheduled to include members of the USA Winter Olympic teams for figure skating, curling, luge, speedskating, bobsledding, snowboarding, and alpine skiing, among other sports, as well as Paralympic athletes in several sports.
"President Trump will proudly celebrate Team USA's historic achievements at the Winter Olympics with a special reception at the People's House," White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers said in a statement. "Our patriotic athletes showed the world American excellence, and their extraordinary performances united us all in our love of country."
