WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump on Thursday, Aug. 6, is set to host more than 120 athletes who competed for Team USA in the 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games in Milano Cortina, Italy, according to the White House.
The evening celebration, which will take place at the White House Rose Garden, is scheduled to include members of the USA Winter Olympic teams for figure skating, curling, luge, speedskating, bobsledding, snowboarding, and alpine skiing, among other sports, as well as Paralympic athletes in several sports.
"President Trump will proudly celebrate Team USA's historic achievements at the Winter Olympics with a special reception at the People's House," White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers said in a statement. "Our patriotic athletes showed the world American excellence, and their extraordinary performances united us all in our love of country."

LAKE PLACID — Even Gov. Kathy Hochul didn't want to get ahead of herself, admiting it was hard to not get wrapped up in the buzz.
On Monday, she and members of the Lake Placid-New York City Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games Exploratory Committee toured facilities around Lake Placid.
"I think we're going to build on the result of Milano and Cortina. There's a lot of synergy, but also I think getting New York City involved would enhance our chances of being selected for the bid," Hochul said.
"As exploratory means, we're just exploring. I can't get ahead of myself. We are just exploring the opportunities, ***** sing the benefits, the cost, how we could make that happen."
The committee, formed in June, has been given one year to research the logistics of hosting joint games in New York before considering next steps.

Triathlete Mohamed Lahna has competed in three Paralympics, winning a bronze medal for Morocco in 2016 and a silver medal for the United States in 2024. He's no stranger to extreme endurance events, either, having swum the Strait of Gibraltar and completed the Marathon des Sables in the Sahara Desert.
But on July 29 in Los Angeles, Lahna crossed a finish line and into unprecedented territory when he completed a cross-country triathlon that he started on June 13 in New York.
The 44-year-old, who was born without a right femur, is believed to be the first athlete with a prosthesis to complete a triathlon across the United States.
Lahna traveled through 16 states and covered a total of 3,300 miles – equivalent to completing 206 Paralympic sprint triathlons or more than 23 Ironman triathlons. For 47 consecutive days, he rose at 4:30 a.m. and battled persistent pain, extreme weather and tough terrain.

The inclusive nature of the Commonwealth Games' integrated schedule is helping to change African attitudes towards disability, according to some of the continent's leading para-athletes.
Unlike the Paralympics there is no separate event for para-sports at the Games, meaning medals won by disabled and non-disabled competitors contribute equally to a nation's tally.
The process began in Manchester in 2002, helping to make it the first fully inclusive international multi-sport Games, with para events taking place during the same sessions as non-disabled ones.
"Sport really is a huge pusher for change," swimmer Husnah Kukundakwe, who is Uganda's team captain in Glasgow, told BBC World Service.
"It shows that para-swimming or para-sport just deserves the same kind of recognition, funding, sponsoring."

Paralympic medallist Daphne Schrager insists she has "never cheated" after being given a two-year ban following an "unintentional" positive test for a banned substance.
Schrager, who won a silver medal at Paris 2024, tested positive for the banned substance Ligandrol, which selectively builds muscle and bone mass.
However, the ban has been backdated to start when she was initially suspended on 2 June 2025.
It will end on 1 June 2027, meaning Schrager could still compete at the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles. However, she has been left out of the England squad for the Commonwealth Games, currently taking place in Glasgow.
The substance was found after the 25-year-old completed an out-of-competition test last year.

Aled Sion Davies feels he has opened Pandora's Box before what could be his final Commonwealth Games with Wales.
Dual-sport athlete Davies, 35, is competing in the F42-44/F61-64 discus throw at this summer's Games in Glasgow, returning to the sport he now sees as a hobby.
The three-time Paralympic gold medallist has hardly picked up a disc since winning Commonwealth Games gold in 2022, with shot put his priority.
A move to Australia after surgery to combat osteitis pubis - a condition that causes inflammation around the groin - has reinvigorated his passion for discus.
"That has changed everything for me, it gave me that belief again," Davies told BBC Sport.

Dame Sarah Storey, Great Britain's most-decorated Paralympian, has retired from international competition with immediate effect.
The 48-year-old cyclist has opted not to compete at Los Angeles 2028 to focus on helping improve Para-sport.
The 19-time Paralympic champion feels the sport has "stalled somewhat" since the London 2012 Games and that many areas "still need attention".
"The years between each Games haven't been utilised well enough to create the momentum that I and others hoped to see," she said.
"I see this as a critical stage; there are many areas of Para-sport that still need attention, and that is something that has played a big part in my decision.
The 48-year-old cyclist has opted not to compete at Los Angeles 2028 to focus on helping improve Para-sport.

In just two short years, Southern California will welcome some of the world's best athletes as our area hosts the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
"We're exactly where we should be and where we want to be. We just had the IOC (International Olympic Committee) in town that talked through all of the different milestones where we should be at this stage," said John Harper, Chief Operating Officer of LA28.
Harper also spoke about ticketing during his appearance on Eyewitness Newsmakers, saying there was unprecedented demand during the first drop. The initial round of ticket sales was disappointing to some people, as several events quickly sold out and prices soared. However, Harper highlights that about 500,000 tickets were sold at the $28 level, and 95% of tickets sold under $100 were for the local communities where the games are taking place.
"As we get closer to the games, we are instituting a community ticketing program. The Los Angeles Rams were the first donor towards that ticketing program, committing $5 million to be able to put the tickets in the hands of people across the communities, and we'll continue to build that as we get closer to the games," Harper said.
As for the athletes who will be competing, that's the focus of Janet Evans, Chief Athlete Officer of LA28. Because Evans is a former swimmer who won five Olympic medals -- four of which are gold -- she understands the unique needs of Olympians. From extra-long beds, nutritious food and transportation, to the venues and security, Evans wants the athletes to focus solely on competing.

Jun. 27—For the second time in the past four years, Susannah Scaroni is an ESPY Award nominee.
Scaroni, who was raised in Tekoa, was dominant on the World Marathon Majors circuit last year, claiming women's wheelchair victories in the Boston, Sydney, Chicago and New York Marathons.
She was nominated Thursday in the category of "Best Athlete With A Disability." Other nominees in the category are Jake Adicoff (para Nordic skiing), Declan Farmer (para hockey) and Oksana Masters (para cross-country skiing).
Scaroni was also nominated in the same category in 2023, following her breakout performance at the 2021 Paralympics in Tokyo.
"I just think the ESPYS are so cool because every sports fan is represented and for someone like me who loves my sports and all para sports, we get to have that showcase alongside the world's biggest sports and best athletes," Scaroni said.

The organization oversees the Davis Cup and Billie Jean King Cup team competitions, as well as tennis at the Olympics and Paralympics.
“Today is an opportunity to redefine our role at the heart of world tennis and pledge our commitment to ensuring a strong, sustainable future for this brilliant sport,” World Tennis president David Haggerty said Thursday. “World Tennis reflects who we are, our global footprint and unique mandate.”
Other international sport federations have made similar name changes in recent years, such as World Athletics, World Aquatics, World Gymnastics and World Rugby.
The name switch was ratified last October by member national tennis ******* ociations voting at the governing body’s annual general meeting.

Nine-year-old Eevie Sayana shyly acknowledged how much fun it was to win a round of Simon Says played with a pair of Olympians Tuesday to mark the internationally celebrated Olympic Day in Salt Lake City's Liberty Park.
Eevie said she liked having to listen closely to the prompts from a Youth City instructor, Ciney Sanchez, and not be tricked into making a hop, jump or other movement that wasn't preceded by "Simon says."
But what really made the experience enjoyable?
"Playing it," she said before joining another round of the competitions set up in the park by the Utah Organizing Committee for the 2034 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games with the help of a half-dozen Olympians and Paralympians and the summer program for grade schoolers.
That love of the game is key to staying motivated as an athlete, said long track speedskater Conor McDermott-Mostowy after playing Simon Says himself. McDermott-Mostowy, who made his Olympic debut this year at Italy's 2026 Winter Games, said there's also a lot to be learned.

An athlete who is registered blind has had his dreams of competing in the Paralympic Games dashed after he was told he could lose what little was left of his sight.
Scott Bailey, a former dairy farmer from Crewe, lost the majority of his vision seven years ago through diabetic retinopathy, a condition which damages the retina's blood vessels.
Over the last two years, he has been training and competing in judo with the aim of representing Team GB in the Los Angeles Paralympic Games in 2028.
But Bailey said a doctor advised him not to take part in the sport anymore, as a blow or injury could cause him to lose the remaining vision in his right eye.
He told BBC Radio Stoke it came not long after his beloved guide dog Milo retired, adding: "At the moment, it feels like there are a million things hitting me.

A pair of abstract images said to draw inspiration from "a mountain revealed by light" will serve as emblems for the 2030 Winter Games, set to be held in multiple locations throughout France and even the Netherlands.
The mountain-like image, filled in with bright blue stripes tinged with reds for the Olympics, is reversed for the Paralympics that follow for athletes with disabilities. Both "Alpes 2030″ emblems use the French name for the country's portion of Europe's iconic peaks.
"The same mountain will unite the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in 2030," said Edgar Grospiron, president of the French Alps organizing committee, calling the two emblems "complementary expressions of the same vision."
It was nearly 29 years ago that organizers of Utah's first Olympics rolled out their logo for the 2002 Winter Games, a stylized gold, orange and purple snowflake embodying snow-capped mountains, crossed skis and a high desert sunset.

Unique events deserve unique settings – in this case, from SAP Garden to the Stone Hall at Nymphenburg Palace. Thursday was dedicated to Munich's bid for the 2036, 2040 or 2044 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Representatives from politics, society and sport explained how the Bavarian capital plans to organise this major event. President Herbert Hainer once again reaffirmed the support of the German champions: "We at FC Bayern, with our more than 432,500 members worldwide, know how strongly sports bring people together – across borders, generations and social backgrounds." That is why the club supports "hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in our home city: Munich is not just bidding for a few weeks of sports, but for an impact that will last for decades – both internally and externally." And one thing is clear, said Hainer in the presence of Minister-President Markus Söder, Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann, Mayor Dominik Krause and Duke Franz of Bavaria: "Munich is not only a cosmopolitan city with a heart, but also a global sports city with a heart."
In addition to Olympians such as long-time FC Bayern Basketball pro and current FCB youth coach Danilo Barthel, Felix Neureuther (alpine skiing), Alexandra Burghardt (sprint and bobsled), Sideris Tasiadis (canoeing), gold medalist Jessica von Bredow-Werndl (dressage), and Michael Teuber (cycling) as a representative of the Paralympic Games, talented young athletes like Bohan from FC Bayern's table tennis division were also in attendance. In front of around 200 invited guests, Bohan took part in a discussion with Hainer and shared how he discovered his passion for sports: while watching table tennis on TV during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, he started playing on a table in the playground, where he was discovered by an FCB coach – and is now training towards his big dream of one day competing in the Olympics himself. This is how sports should inspire: inspiration leads to getting active, developing oneself and and pursuing goals.

Munich's sustainable concept is based on an Olympics of short distances: more than 90 percent of the venues are to be located within a 30km radius. The Olympic and Paralympic Village will once again be designed so that it can be used as an accessible residential area even after the major event, under the guiding principle of a "generations neighbourhood". Olympic champions Emma Finucane and Matt Richards, former world indoor champion Jeremiah Azu and Paralympic sprinter Olivia Breen will compete for Team Wales at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games between 23 July and 2 August.
The 114 athletes include Paralympic champion Aled Sion Davies and world silver medal artistic gymnast Ruby Evans.
The team will compete across 10 different sports with 66 female and 48 male athletes with ages ranging from 16 to 73 years old.
Twenty-two Para-athletes are selected with Glasgow hosting more para-events than in any other Games.
"This group represents the very best of Welsh sport - dedicated, ambitious and proud to wear the red jersey," Team Wales' chef de mission Gethin Jones said.
The 114 athletes include Paralympic champion Aled Sion Davies and world silver medal artistic gymnast Ruby Evans.

Four-time Olympian Catherine Raney Norman is leaving the organizing committee for Utah’s 2034 Winter Games.
The departure was described in a news release Wednesday as her decision “to conclude her tenure” with the Organizing Committee for the 2034 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
Raney Norman, the organizing committee’s vice president of development and athlete relations, had served as chair of the bid committee and was the key force behind the Podium34 program that has raised more than $250 million for Utah’s next Winter Games.
Also announced was the hiring of Abby Osborne, who just stepped down as chief of staff to House Speaker Mike Schultz, R-Hooper, as vice president of impact, engagement and enterprise operations. Osborne is giving up her organizing committee board membership.
Julie Letai, a two-time Olympic speedskater, has been named athlete experience coordinator. Other changes at the organizing committee include another vice president, Darren Hughes, moving from being over operations and planning to Games delivery.

A Paralympic athlete died "in an accident waiting to happen" when a metal bar fell on him, a sentencing hearing at the Old Bailey has been told.
Abdullah Hayayei, a wheelchair using shot putter from the United Arab Emirates, was killed when a training cage collapsed in a gust of wind at a training facility in Newham, London, as he practised for the World Para Athletics Championships in July 2017.
UK Athletics, the event's organiser, is being sentenced for corporate manslaughter.
Keith Davies, 78, UK Athletics' former head of sport, is being sentenced for a breach of health and safety law. Both Mr Davies and UK Athletics pleaded guilty at a hearing earlier this year.
Prosecuting, John Price KC told judge Richard Marks KC that the equipment that killed Mr Hayayei, 36, was missing key components.
