Great Britain lead the medal table at the European Athletics Championships 2026 after a thrilling first two days of competition, with sprinters Romell Glave and Jeremiah Azu picking up gold and silver respectively in the men's 100m to take the national tally to two golds and two silvers.
Their success followed world 200m silver medallist Amy Hunt winning GB's first gold of the championships as she surged to victory in the 100m on Monday night in 11 seconds flat, having been seventh of the eight-athlete final after the first 10m due to a typical slower start. But she stormed back to overhaul Poland's Ewa Swoboda and Belgium's Delphine Nkansa, while defending champion Dina Asher-Smith finished fifth.
Italy and the Netherlands are close behind GB on four medals apiece while Norway took two golds on the opening night, with Jakob Ingebrigtsen claiming a brilliant 5,000m gold after nearly a year out of competition.
The Norwegian great was sidelined with an Achilles injury which required surgery in January and only returned to full training six weeks ago, but stunned his rivals in the final 100m - after appearing completely boxed in - to win a record-equalling seventh European gold.
The Norwegian 4x400m mixed relay team added a second gold later that evening, while Britain's team were led home to silver by Yemi Mary John.

With Jaguars coach Liam Coen announcing that he won't play his starters in the first preseason game every one of these practice reps becomes that much more valuable. This is the Saints' first chance to pit their best against their opponent's best. And with that in mind, here are four matchups we'll be watching closely:
Hunter has secured his place on top of Jacksonville's depth chart at cornerback, and he's looking to build off of a rookie year full of encouraging moments but short on game tape after he was shut down with a knee injury after Week 7. Similarly, Saints fans had to wait to see Tyson until the Saints opened up training camp because they kept him on ice throughout the spring to rest an injured hamstring. Now both young pros are playing well. Seeing who comes out ahead should be one of Thursday's biggest draws.
Harrison started the last three seasons at right tackle, and he has looked like the Jags' best blocker regardless of position. But now he's lining up on the left side (where he played in college at Oklahoma) while projected starter Cole Van Lanen deals with an injury. This is a great test for Young against one of the league's better young tackles. The Saints are eager to see Young take the next step after breaking out with ten sacks last season. He's talked a lot of trash and taken on a more vocal role as a leader during practice. Winning his battles with Harrison would be tremendous.
Walker has caught some heat for not being as effective a pass rusher as the guy drafted right behind him (Aidan Hutchinson), but he's consistently won his matchups with the Jaguars' right tackles at training camp and is exactly the type of high-end athlete who gave Fuaga trouble last season. Fuaga did have to fight through a couple of different injuries last season so proving he can stand up to one of the Jags' top edge rushers would inspire real confidence. Josh Hines-Allen is one to watch, too, but it sounds like he's mainly rushing off the right side of the formation (and against Saints left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr.).
Washington broke out last season with 65 catches for 954 yards and six touchdowns (including thee playoffs), quickly ****** erting himself as one of Trevor Lawrence's favorite targets. He split time in the slot with Jakobi Meyers but was targeted more often when he did line up inside, leading Jacksonville in yards (458) and touchdowns (3) by healthy margins. He'll be the one to watch when the Saints roll out their nickel personnel with safety Jonas Sanker manning the slot. He's had his hands full with Chris Olave and Jordyn Tyson rotating into the slot throughout training camp, but getting to work against another team's talent will show us if he's ready to hold it down when the season starts.

Organizers of the European championships have defended ticket prices in Birmingham after British sprinter Amy Hunt won the 100-meter final at a nearly half-empty Alexander Stadium.
One of Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson's coaches was among those questioning prices and raising concerns about parking and the cost of food — with bratwurst hot dogs going for 15 pounds ($20).
The category A seats for Monday night's session — which included Jakob Ingebrigtsen's victory in the 5,000 meters and Hunt's gold — cost 150 pounds ($202). The cheapest adult ticket was 26 pounds ($35).
Official attendance Monday night was 13,623, though journalists on hand said the actual figure seemed lower, in a stadium with capacity at 23,000.
"Hearing from fans re high ticket prices, parking issues & even people not knowing it was taking place," Jenny Meadows, a coach of Hodgkinson, wrote on social media.

The friendly will be Barça's last preseason clash before their annual home curtain raiser when the Blaugrana will face Al-Ahly in the Joan Gamper Trophy on August 19.
Hansi Flick will have his entire first team squad available as the World Cup participants are due back in training on Wednesday, but it remains to be seen how many of those will feature against Basel.
Basel finished fifth in the Swiss Super League last season and last met Barça in the 2008-09 Champions League group stage, and Barça will return to the place where they won the 1979 European Cup Winners' Cup final against Fortuna Düsseldorf.

MIAMI (AP) — Sandy Alcantara struck out eight in seven innings, becoming the Miami Marlins' career leader in innings pitched, and Xavier Edwards had three RBIs in a 7-0 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Saturday.
Alcantara (13-6) broke the record in the third, working his 1,226th inning and passing Ricky Nolasco, who pitched 1,225 2/3 innings for the Marlins from 2006-13. He gave up three hits and walked one. Reliever Pete Fairbanks struck out all three batters in the ninth to end the game.
Edwards hit an RBI double as Miami took a 2-0 lead in the third, followed by Otto Lopez's two-run single to double the Marlins' lead. Jakob Marsee tripled to lead off the fifth, and Edwards singled to send him home.
Griffin Conine singled and Heriberto Hernández doubled in the fifth to make it 7-0.
Angels starter Walbert Ureña (7-8) pitched the first 2 1/3 innings. He allowed four hits and four earned runs. He walked three and struck out two. Brett Kerry pitched the final 5 2/3 innings, striking out seven and walking one. He gave up six hits.

Barcelona have officially added another fixture to their 2026/27 pre-season schedule.
Hansi Flick's side will face FC Basel on Sunday, 16 August, with kick-off scheduled for 4:30 p.m. CEST at St. Jakob-Park, one of Switzerland's most iconic football stadiums.
Following the friendly against Birmingham City and the triangular tournament in Udine featuring Nottingham Forest and Udinese, the trip to Basel will provide another important test as the Catalans continue their preparations for the new campaign.
The club's final pre-season outing will then be the Joan Gamper Trophy, against Al-Ahly, which will also serve as the team's official home presentation ahead of the new season.
Barcelona and Basel have met twice in official competition, both during the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League group stage.

The Vikings' defense has enjoyed the presence of Harrison Smith ever since he was drafted back in 2012. The team enjoys his presence on and off the field, but at 37, some things are just not the same as they used to be. As a result, the unsigned veteran is sitting on the side waiting for something to change or to retire.
Meanwhile, the team is in the middle of training camp and preparing to move on from Smith, unless, of course, he wants to come back. They are preparing for the future by drafting Jakobe Thomas out of Miami (FL), and they will lean on the remaining veterans.
None of this seems to matter, though, based on the recent work done by ESPN's Benjamin Solak. He wrote about his takeaways from Vikings camp, which did include some thoughts on Smith and the Vikings' safety position.
He writes, "There's no way to replace safety Harrison Smith. . .That's if he retires. It isn't formalized yet, and the Vikings are hoping he returns despite drafting safety Jakobe Thomas in the third round. While I was at camp, Thomas was not yet taking many first-team reps, but that's understandable, given how complex this defense is. . .My sense in watching practice and speaking to folks on the ground is there's no one winning idea for how to replace Smith just yet."
There has to be some faith placed on the shoulders of Brian Flores with the trio he has in place. Led by Josh Metellus, the Vikings' safeties have played well under the tutelage of Flores. Losing Smith will be a heavy hit, but time will tell how tough a transition it is.

ATLANTA (AP) — Bryce Elder pitched one-hit ball over seven innings, Drake Baldwin drove in two runs and the Atlanta Braves won their season-high seventh in a row, beating the Miami Marlins 4-1 on Wednesday night.
Elder (8-6) turned in another excellent start after a tough June, surrendering his lone hit on a fifth-inning liner to left that Jakob Marsee hustled into a double. Owen Caissie, who had walked, raced to third and scored on Joe Mack's groundout.
That was it against Elder, who is 3-0 with a 1.88 ERA over his last four starts. Didier Fuentes got the final four outs for his second career save after Dylan Dodd allowed a pair of singles in the eighth.
Baldwin capped a three-run second inning against Eury Pérez (5-9) with a two-out single to center that brought home a pair of runners. Austin Riley drove in the first run of the night with a ground-rule double.
Mauricio Dubón sent home Atlanta's other run with his 600th career hit. The RBI single came after a bizarre play in which Michael Harris' apparent steal of third was nullified when Mack's throw ricocheted off Dubón's helmet and flew into the stands, resulting in an interference call on the hitter.

As in all sports, NFL teams need to hit on their draft picks, as their rosters are so expansive. It is imperative to leave a draft class with at least one to two starters and to be able to find depth pieces to support. In recent years, the Minnesota Vikings have struggled to find an abundance of quality, as Minnesota has drafted 28 players since 2022, and only four have turned out to be starters.
However, according to Alec Lewis of The Athletic, the rookies are showing out so far in training camp, with love being given to the later-round picks as well. Here are some of Lewis' thoughts:
Early returns look promising. First-round pick Caleb Banks responded from left foot surgery and is already mixing in with the starters. Second-round linebacker Jake Golday tipped a pass Saturday, evoking shades of edge rusher Andrew Van Ginkel.
There has been positivity from the later-round picks, too. ***** istant head coach Frank Smith spent some time after Saturday's practice reviewing techniques with fullback Max Bredeson. Cornerback Chuck Demmings blanketed Jefferson and deflected a pass. Safety Jakobe Thomas continues to show up in all areas of Brian Flores' defense, and undrafted safety Jacob Thomas tends to play right alongside him.
This was a defensive-heavy draft class, and it is a promising sign to see that the bulk of the picks are performing well so far. It will be fascinating to see them in action in the preseason to see just how far they have come.

Eight-time PBA Tour champion Jakob **** urff died on Friday, July 31, the Professional Bowlers **** ociation announced. He was 32.
No cause of death was announced. The PBA said **** urff "died unexpectedly."
"Jakob was one of the most unique players in PBA history," PBA Commissioner Tom Clark said in a statement. "Fans marveled at his delivery, as he rode a wave of strikes into becoming a top player in the sport, capable of winning at any time, in any event.
"Jakob was kind, he was respectful, and he was a champion. He will never be forgotten. Our hearts are with all **** ers touched on his one-of-a-kind journey."
Included in **** urff's eight victories was a major win at the 2019 USBC Masters. He also picked up 27 PBA Regional Tour **** les and was a 7-time member of Team USA, per the PBA. He bowled a televised 300 during the 2020 PBA Tour Finals.

The Mets fell to the Fish by a score of 5-2 which evened up the series against Miami. Kodai Senga got the start instead of Freddy Peralta who was scratched ahead of Monday's trade deadline.
Senga was actually very good through four innings allowing just one hit and no walks. Unfortunately it all fell apart in the fifth when issued back-to-back walks to start the inning. Jakob Marsee followed with a double to put the Marlins on the board with their first run of the game. Senga was then lifted in favor of Xzavion Curry who didn't exactly limit the damage. Two singles brought home two more runs and Miami held a 4-0 lead when the inning ended. That also closed the book on Senga's night who was charged with three of those runs. It's a shame because it was a positive step forward for the righty until the fifth, and perhaps he tired a bit towards the end of his outing.
After the Mets put a run on the board in the bottom of the inning thanks to a Marlins error and an A.J. Ewing RBI single, Curry gave the run right back the following inning on a Kyle Stowers home run.
Francisco Lindor countered with a solo shot of his own in the seventh but that was as close as the Mets would get. The offense wasn't necessarily shut down by Miami's pitchers. They had their chances they just couldn't capitalize on them. Luis Robert Jr. especially had a rough night. He struck out with runners on second and third and two-out in the fourth and grounded into a double play in the eighth when they needed baserunners. One night after being the hero he went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. As the great Frank Sinatra once said 'That's life."
Nothing else of any importance happened in this game but its what is happening away from the field that is far more important for this organization right now. Get me some trades, and some photos of Spider-man!

Harmon thinks ****** er is a great receiver and it's just taken him a bit longer to adjust to the NFL game coming from Holy Cross at the collegiate level. Harmon compares ****** er's body type to that of Chris Godwin Jr. or Jakobi Meyers. Two receivers we've seen have fantasy football success in the past five years.
Coker has only made it to 11 games in each of his two NFL seasons. Health has been an issue but he's made strides to get his body right. Last season, ****** er had 33 catches for 394 yards and three scores. While the regular season was uninspiring from a fantasy standpoint, the ****** ysts point out the playoff game vs. the Rams. ****** er had a 9-134-1 line on 12 targets against Los Angeles in the Panthers' near upset win.

Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. would like to put the 2025 season in the rearview mirror.
Thomas had 87 catches for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns after being drafted in the first round in 2024, but his second season halted all talk of him jumping right to the top of the list of NFL wideouts. Thomas caught less than half of the ****** thrown his way and he was credited with 10 drops en route to 48 catches for 707 yards and two touchdowns.
The drop in production led to trade chatter this offseason, but the Jaguars were quick to shut it down and call Thomas a big part of their plans for 2026. That talk and other doubts about his upside still found their way to Thomas and he credits a conversation with his father for putting him in the right mindset to bounce back.
"We heard everything that was going on, all that, but he just told me, 'Come out here and be undeniable,'" Thomas said, via Mark Lane of the ****** ociated Press. "That's just something I live by every day. I want to be undeniable."
Jakobi Meyers and Parker Washington stepped up as the team's most reliable wideouts during a 13-4 season, so Jacksonville has a full deck of options in the passing game. They'd still like to see Thomas get back to something close to that undeniable rookie form as they try to defend their division ****** le this fall.

The Toronto Raptors are in one of the stranger situations in the NBA at the moment because of the whole Kawhi Leonard saga.
Unfortunately for the Raptors, until the Leonard situation gets resolved, there will be questions about whether they can realistically trade for him, or whether the deal will even go down as reported.
One way to fix some of these problems would be to go out and land other players. At the very least, the Raptors would know they have some other talent coming in. One trade idea was recently floated to bring back Norman Powell and Nic Claxton, two above-average players from the Chicago Bulls.
"Immanuel Quickley ($32.5 million) and Jakob Poeltl ($19.5 million) are both drawing above-value contracts for 2026-27," Alex Kirschenbaum wrote. "To get off Poeltl's money and return Powell to the Raptors, Quickley and Poeltl could be shipped out to Chicago in exchange for Powell and Claxton."

The 2026 World Cup took the country by storm over the past six weeks, with Spain taking the ****** le over the weekend by beating the reigning champions, Argentina. Celebrities of all statures were on hand to take in the final, including former Colorado Buffaloes star Travis Hunter.
Hunter was filmed entering New York-New Jersey Stadium (MetLife Stadium) donning a clean No. 10 Lionel Messi jersey. While Hunter might have gone home disappointed with Argentina's loss, he had his typical smile on his face before the game, vibing to the pregame sounds.
The Jacksonville Jaguars star is entering his second year in the NFL after being the No. 2 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. His rookie season was disappointing overall after it ended with knee surgery following Week 7. Playing both wide receiver and cornerback full time, Hunter seemed to be hitting his stride in the game the injury happened, as he racked up eight receptions for 101 yards and caught his first NFL touchdown.
In 2025, Hunter finished with 28 receptions for 298 yards and one touchdown on offense, along with 15 combined tackles and three passes defended. After recovering from his injury, he bulked up this offseason, hoping to be better prepared for the physicality of the NFL and, specifically, to play both offense and defense.
The Jaguars have a loaded wide receiver room, with Hunter seemingly behind starters Brian Thomas Jr. and Parker Washington and competing with Jakobi Meyers for third-receiver reps. On defense, Hunter is listed as a starting cornerback alongside Montaric Brown.

The PIAA Distrct 11 Hall of Fame class of 2026 was announced on Tuesday, and among the newest selections into the hall of fame is Tamaqua Area High School multi-sport athlete Erika (Barron) Davis.
Davis, who now serves as the coach of the Tamaqua girls’ basketball team, participated in cross country, basketball, track and field, and volleyball during her time at Tamaqua. She finished her career with a school record 2,317 points and was a two-time All-State selection in the process.
She’d go on to have a standout collegiate career at Susquehanna University, where she totaled nearly 900 points in 102 career games played while also recording 364 ******* ists and 159 steals.
Davis, this past school year, completed her 11th season as Tamaqua’s girls’ basketball coach.

Jul. 12—EUGENE — Eugene's Lisbel Diaz hit two two-run home runs and the Spokane Indians lost to the Emeralds 9-5 in the finale of a six-game High-A Northwest League series at PK Park on Sunday.
Diaz finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs. The Indians (14-7) were led by Jacob Hinderleider, who had two hits, including a home run, and three RBIs.
Indians outfielder Tommy Hopfe hit the first pitch of the game for a solo home r, his 11th of the season.
Eugene (10-11) pounced on Indians starter Jordy Vargas in the bottom half. Diaz hit a two-out, two-run blast — his third of the week and 13th of the season. Zander Darby followed with a double and Jakob Christian knocked him in with a line -drive single to make it 3-1.
Diaz went deep again in the third, another two-run shot, for his second career two-home -run game in High-A.

The 2027 recruiting class for the Oklahoma Sooners remains at 27 after running back commit Keldrid Ben reaffirmed his pledge to OU on Friday. Running backs coach Deland McCullough is keeping a player on board who originally committed to McCullough's predecessor, DeMarco Murray.
Ben, who is from Montgomery (Texas) High School, has been committed to OU since December 1st. The four-star prospect checks in at 5-foot-10 and 208 pounds. He's the No. 86 overall player in the class, according to Rivals and a consensus four-star prospect. He has shut down his recruitment, which had been competitive after he ran for 18 touchdowns as a junior in 2025. On the ground, he piled up over 1,500 yards.
Ben joins fellow Texan Jakoby Dixon, who was McCullough's first add through recruiting, as the two RB commits in Oklahoma's 2027 class. Head coach Brent Venables and general manager Jim Nagy have been hard at work ****** embling a top-flight group, aided by strong success on the field in 2025.
According to 247Sports, Ben is the 14th-best running back in the class, the 39th-best player in the state of Texas, and the 225th-best player in the nation for 2027. He is an important piece of the class that Venables and Nagy are building together in Norman.

Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:META) is one of the top stocks to buy according to Whale Rock Capital Management. On June 30, Reuters reported that a federal judge in Oakland, California, rejected Meta Platforms Inc.'s (NASDAQ:META) attempt to dismiss a lawsuit filed by dozens of US state attorneys general, who accuse the company of intentionally designing Facebook and Instagram to be addictive to children while hiding the resulting harm from the public.

US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers issued the ruling late on Monday (June 29) night, said Reuters. It added that the judge denied Meta's motion to dismiss claims tied to deception, unfair business practices, and violations of the federal Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). COPPA requires companies to get parental consent before collecting data from children under 13.
On the COPPA issue specifically, the judge found that it was undisputed that Meta failed to properly notify parents or obtain their consent as the law requires. The 38-page ruling stated that there remain real factual disagreements that a jury needs to resolve, including whether Meta's platforms are actually addictive, whether the company falsely denied designing them that way, and whether it partly targeted children with these features, Reuters noted.
Reuters added that the judge pointed to internal Meta statements claiming its platforms were not built to cause compulsive use among teens. The judge said a jury could reasonably conclude those statements were misleading if evidence shows the platforms were in fact engineered that way.

MIAMI (AP) — Jakob Marsee hit a game-ending single off the wall in right field in the 10th inning, and the Miami Marlins beat the Seattle Mariners 6-5 on Tuesday night.
With runners at the corners and one out, Marsee hit a high drive against Michael Rucker (0-2) to easily score automatic runner Xavier Edwards.
Cade Gibson (2-0) got three outs in the top half, erasing automatic runner Weston Wilson on his first pitch when he induced a fielder's-choice grounder to shortstop by Cal Raleigh.
Pinch-hitter Heriberto Hernández led off the eighth for the Marlins with a 422-foot homer to left, his 12th of the season, to tie the game at 5-all. Owen Caissie also hit his 12th for Miami, a solo shot in the second.
Marsee drove in a run with a third-inning single on his 2-for-4 night.
