The Bahrain-Victorious prodigy was part of a 30-strong breakaway on the 166.6km stage 12, a dramatic up-and-down day after two flatter stages for the sprinters.
Fireworks were always expected on the back-to-back category-one climbs at the end of the day and Omrzel duly provided them, taking his first WorldTour victory on the biggest stage - and on his debut grand tour.

NICOSIA, Aug 30 (Reuters) - At least eight people died and 18 were missing after a ferry carrying around 270 passengers and crew capsized off North Cyprus on Sunday, leaving survivors clinging to its overturned hull.
The privately owned ferry left the port of Kyrenia at 12:30 p.m. local time (0930 GMT) and immediately started taking on water for an unknown reason, authorities said. It was heading for the Turkish port of Tasucu in the eastern Mediterranean.
Survivors reported the ferry moving erratically, with its last hard impact with the water's surface breaking the bow of the two-hulled vessel, allowing water to seep in. The boat was carrying 267 people, including a crew of eight, while 241 people were rescued.

LIV Golf will lay off the majority of its staff next week under drastic reforms intended to keep the breakaway tour afloat next year, a spokeswoman said Wednesday.
The layoffs come after LIV Golf lost the deep-pocketed Saudi investors that had spent a reported $5 billion over several years to lure many top stars from golf's PGA Tour.
That funding from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) came to an abrupt end following last weekend's Indianapolis LIV season finale event.
While LIV officials say a "2.0" version of the tour will re-emerge under new investors next season, with a shorter schedule and reduced prize money, that remains deeply uncertain.
"The funding commitment announced by PIF earlier this year will reach its conclusion. As a result, we are scaling back operations as we transition to the next chapter of LIV Golf and work toward making LIV 2.0 a reality," said the LIV spokeswoman, in a statement.

After an outstanding NFL debut in the Cleveland Browns preseason game against the Chicago Bears, a former Texas A&M wide receiver made some fiery comments about his mindset on the gridiron.
KC Concepcion showcased why he was a first-round pick in his first professional contest, hauling in three receptions and 27 yards, while also rushing for a 14-yard touchdown and securing a 31-yard punt return. His performance drew plenty of attention on social media, with many touting Concepcion as the NFL's next star wideout.

Atlanta's adding another veteran option to their running back group, signing Marietta native Trey Sermon to a one-year deal. Just because you have Bijan Robinson doesn't mean you can't worry about your depth.
Sermon was a third round pick for the 49ers in 2021 and followed a familiar trajectory for a 49ers reserve runner, dealing with injuries and ultimately falling out of favor as the team quickly cycled through options.
Sermon will join the Falcons hoping to battle Nate Carter, Cash Jones, and Tyler Goodson for the team's third back role behind Bijan and Brian Robinson. With Bijan unlikely to play much during preseason and Brian pretty locked in to his role, expect all four backs to get plenty of run in the first week of preseason and (if they all stick around) over the coming weeks as well. He wound up on the Eagles in his second season, spent two years with the Colts, and signed with the Steelers last season and now has 505 yards and three touchdowns on the ground to go with 22 receptions for 138 yards.
With a good line—and the Falcons should once again have one—Sermon's physicality and speed can make him a fun reserve back, especially because he can catch the ball and block when called upon. To this point in his NFL career, the production has been underwhelming and he's struggled to find a home, but there is no locked-in third back in Atlanta and he should get a fair shot to show the role is his. With Cash Jones providing a lot of utility as a receiver and special teamer in camp, Carter having that intriguing breakaway speed, and Goodson doing a bit of everything well, though, Sermon will have to be sharp to get that chance.

LIV Golf 1.0 — the era of big talk and bigger paychecks — is over. Whatever comes next for the breakaway tour, cut loose by Saudi Arabian funding and now on the hunt for outside investment, the days of "Golf But Louder" are done.
Without a doubt, LIV fundamentally changed the structure of men's professional golf, forcing the PGA Tour into reworking its entire structure, schedule and financial model. LIV altered the professional arcs of some of the game's greatest players, gave others the opportunity to destroy their own reputations, and provided a pathway back to prominence for the once-lost Anthony Kim. LIV also brought the concept of sportswashing into the mainstream of the American sports conversation, forcing sports fans to decide just how much politics they were willing to accept with their sports.
That's a ****** of an impact in just a few short years, but that also leads into another LIV lesson: the impossibility of competing with the established American sports framework. Even a league funded by bottomless oil wealth ultimately couldn't compete with a vulnerable legacy organization.
So what does that mean? Competing with the PGA Tour is a lost cause for LIV, so coexistence is now the only path forward. And if LIV is going to survive and thrive in the years to come, version 2.0 will need to learn from the mistakes of its predecessor. And oh, are there plenty of lessons to learn.

LIV Golf has announced it has reached an agreement with a new "lead investor," with Saudi Arabia ending its financial backing of the breakaway circuit at the end of the 2026 season.
The news comes after Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) announced on April 30 that it would withdraw funding, which brought the future of the tour into doubt.

La Familia survived a hard-fought three-game rivalry series against The Ville, punching its ticket to the next round of The Basketball Tournament (TBT) with a 63-57 victory Wednesday night inside Memorial Coliseum.
After splitting the first two games, with La Familia winning 72-68 in Lexington before falling 82-62 in Louisville, everything came down to Game 3. The Ville controlled much of the first half, building a 21-13 first-quarter lead before taking a 30-25 advantage into halftime. La Familia struggled offensively early, especially from beyond the arc, but stayed within striking distance thanks to its defensive effort.
The game completely shifted after halftime.

Jasper Philipsen ended his frustration at this year's Tour de France with victory from a reduced sprint on stage 17 as Tadej Pogacar stayed safe in the yellow jersey.
Philipsen repeatedly fell short in bunch sprints over the first two weeks of this Tour but made it look easy in Voiron after a 35-strong breakaway arrived first into town.
With Alpecin-Premier Tech team-mate Mathieu van der Poel providing the lead-out, Philipsen finished several bike lengths ahead of Mauro Schmid and Olav Kooij to take his 11th career Tour stage win, having won one in each edition since 2022.
"Definitely (it's special) after such a roller coaster of emotions in this Tour de France," Philipsen said.

There's a narrative circulating the Los Angeles Rams that their RB1 job should be up for grabs between Kyren Williams and Blake Corum, due to Corum's explosiveness and the number of big runs he pulled off in 2025.
While it does make sense for Corum to have an increased workload, there is zero evidence to prove that Corum deserves the RB1 job. In order to be an RB1 on the Rams, a running back must be able to play an evolving role within the offense. The Rams' offense is predicated on mirroring the run and the pass through plays that mimic similar opening steps.
One of the more hashed-out points in the argument for why Corum isn't able to be the player the Rams need is that Corum's running style is patient and slow in his initial steps. The brilliance about his style is that he is able to navigate holes as they develop to run away from overpursuing defenders. The downside is that if those holes don't open, Corum gets tackled for a loss, and there's no fear being instilled into the defense to mirror the run and pass.
Williams may not have breakaway speed, but he is a hard-nosed runner that defenses are forced to respect with his instant quickness to their approach. Since the defense knows Williams won't wait, they have to respond at the snap of the ball, making them more susceptible to leaving gaps for the passing game to exploit.
However, the biggest issue when it comes to Corum is his play outside of being a runner. His frame is too small to be a consistent run blocker, and his hands have way too many question marks to use him in the pass game, especially since ******* tend to deflect off his hands and remain airborne for defenders to grab. Las Vegas Raiders star Brock Bowers rose to prominence during his rookie season in 2024 as one of the best tight ends in football. Though Bowers missed time due to being hurt in 2025, he is still viewed as being among the elite tight ends in the NFL as the new season approaches.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Bowers ranks as the No. 1 overall tight end in the NFL for the 2026 season. The poll was voted on by NFL coaches, executives and scouts.

The day before the Tour's first rest stage proved to be a highly charged rollercoaster. As overall leader, Tadej Pogacar chose who would be allowed in the breakaway and who would not, the worn out peloton was ready for the day to be over.
The unbearable heat matched with the speed of both the breakaway and peloton proved every rider was ready to wrap this day up early. From Malemort to Ussel, the hills were calm compared to the intensity of the riders.
At one thrilling point, Tom Pidcock's gears broke on him in the breakaway. After a few swift kicks, the gears were fixed, and he was back with the leaders.
The final breakaway included the likes of Mathieu Van Der Poel, Tobias Johannessen, Tom Pidcock, and Alex Baudin. The peloton nipped at their heels the entire day. So much so, the peloton filled with the leaders, finished 6 seconds behind today's stage winner.

Throughout the 2026 World Cup, VAR has been at the center of the tournament, and not for all the right reasons.
Decisions based on VAR have been labeled as inconsistent, including with Folarin Balogun's red card review, and it happened again on Tuesday, with referee Francois Letexier calling off a second Egypt goal thanks to an Argentina toe stepped on by Marwan Attia that ended up being a foul.
Fox ******* yst Rob Green immediately ripped VAR as the replay wiped out the goal (although Egypt would score not too soon after that). Here's what he had to say:
"100 yards away, someone stepping on someone's toe is not why VAR was brought into the game. We've got to a point now where it's reaching far beyond the powers that it should have. The referee saw the tackle, decided not to give it, and then Egypt with a brilliant breakaway goal have been denied a two-goal cushion."

The 40-year streak is over. And that means I won't get any sleep tonight because, yes, I'm in Mexico City for the summer.
CDMX is in full celebration mode after the Mexican national team secured its first knockout stage win in 40 years with a dominant 2-0 win over Ecuador on Tuesday night at the famed Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. El Tri had not accomplished the feat since 1986.
The writing appeared to be on the wall from the start. Mexico's relentless attack nearly netted two goals in the opening minutes. The boisterous crowd wouldn't have to wait long to really let loose after Julián Quiñones scored on a breakaway in the 22nd minute. Less than 10 minutes later, Raúl Jiménez took a pass from the top of the box and caught Ecuador's goalkeeper flat-footed to sneak a blistering shot past him. To Mexico's credit, the attack didn't let up. Though El Tri didn't find a third goal, they kept Ecuador on its heels the entire night.
With the historic win, Mexico moves on to play one more game at Estadio Azteca on Sunday night against the winner of England and the DR Congo.

ROME (AP) — Pope Leo XIV on Tuesday issued a plea to a breakaway group of traditionalist Catholics to call off its plan to consecrate new bishops without his consent, describing the move as a schismatic act and a "sin of extreme gravity."
"I plead with you and ask you with all my heart: please turn back!" Leo wrote in a letter to the Rev. Davide Pagliarani, the superior of the Society of St. Pius X.
Leo issued the last-ditch appeal a day before the society plans to consecrate four new bishops at its seminary in Econe, Switzerland. Under church law, the consecrations constitute a schismatic act, or an intentional rupture of the unity of the Catholic Church, and incur automatic excommunication for the four bishops and the bishop administering the consecration.
Pagliarani responded by writing a formal letter to Leo asking him to take time before deciding any penalty.
"Far be it from us to separate ourselves from the Roman Church. We desire, on the contrary, to serve her by means that are extraordinary, as one would **** ist a mother in distress who requires particular help, even if such help is not understood by everyone," Pagliarani wrote.
"I plead with you and ask you with all my heart: please turn back!" Leo wrote in a letter to the Rev. Davide Pagliarani, the superior of the Society of St. Pius X.

Tim Legler has a pretty good explanation for why ESPN’s NBA Finals broadcast didn’t give De’Aaron Fox’s crucial late-game decision the scrutiny it deserved at the time: the pandemonium that followed.
Legler was a guest on the Awful Announcing Podcast last week and addressed the criticism that the ESPN/ABC broadcast crew of Mike Breen, Richard Jefferson, and Legler barely examined Fox’s decision to go for a breakaway layup rather than hold the ball and force a foul in the closing seconds of Game 4 of the Knicks-Spurs series. The layup was blocked by OG Anunoby, helping set the stage for New York’s stunning comeback victory, and the debate over whether Fox should have taken the foul instead immediately consumed the collective sports media, with First Take, Get Up, and social media all piling on the next morning.
Legler acknowledged the play deserved more attention and said he wished the broadcast had gotten a comment in. But he was also clear about what made that difficult. ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistani security forces Sunday carried out an "intelligence-based" ground operation along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, followed by "calibrated strikes" against militant hideouts and safe havens, killing 29 fighters, officials said.
The military did not say how the strikes were carried out, but Pakistan's air force has been involved in the previous targeting of alleged militant hideouts inside Afghanistan.
In a post on X, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the operation was launched in response to multiple militant attacks across the country. There was no immediate response from Afghanistan.
It comes a day after militants armed with guns and explosives targeted the regional headquarters of the paramilitary Rangers in the southern port city of Karachi, killing three soldiers. Security forces killed three attackers and arrested another **** ailant, whom the military identified as an Afghan national in wounded condition.
Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a breakaway faction of the Pakistani Taliban, claimed responsibility for the Karachi attack in a statement Saturday night.

VATICAN CITY (AP) — A breakaway group of traditionalist Catholics will challenge Pope Leo XIV's authority next week by consecrating four bishops without his consent. Rather than shying away from the confrontation, the Society of St. Pius X seems intent on embracing its notoriety.
The group, which celebrates the traditional Latin Mass and rejects the modernizing reforms of the Catholic Church, is planning a highly organized, four-day, livestreamed extravaganza for the consecrations at its Swiss seminary — complete with a souvenir wine set offered to those attending.
The July 1 event, nearly four decades after the group first became a thorn in the Vatican's side, suggests it is leaning in even more ardently to its schismatic status for a new generation of Catholics who prefer their Masses in Latin and don't mind that their bishops are out of communion with Rome.
"To me, they look really like Traditionalism 2.0," said Massimo **** gioli, professor of theology at Villanova University, Leo's alma mater. The group, known as the SSPX, has embraced technology and digital branding of its religious identity, despite its antimodern, integralist agenda.
"Their game is not about getting back into the fold, but getting back into the monopoly of that ultra-traditionalist identity," **** gioli said.
