Belgium took the wind out of the United States men's national team's sails this summer during the 2026 World Cup. Before that humbling 4-1 defeat in the Round of 16, a controversial decision from FIFA effectively made the USMNT an enemy, at least according to Belgium defender Thomas Meunier.
The 35-year-old Meunier, who has 83 caps for Belgium and just represented the country in his third World Cup, explained to The Athletic that, because of head-turning call to suspend Folarin Balogun's red-card suspension, "everyone wanted us to beat America."
"Everyone wanted them to be eliminated," he added more than two months after the July 6 match, per The Athletic.
Balogun himself has admitted that, even though he was relieved to be on the pitch for the knockout match, hearing that he'd be part of the squad was bittersweet.
"My initial reaction was I was happy to be back in the team, but when I kind of started to reflect, I knew it was going to cause a lot of controversy, and I could almost see within my teammates a bit of nerves because it's something that's so unique," Balogun told "CBS Mornings" in July.

Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that Noahkai Banks will not be considered for the USMNT's upcoming camp as the young defender continues to weigh up whether to represent the United States or Germany.
Banks removed himself from consideration earlier this year while he considered his international future, leaving Pochettino with no choice but to leave the Augsburg centre-back out of his plans for now.
The 19-year-old initially joined the USMNT camp in September and had previously represented the country at Under-17, Under-19 and Under-20 level. He did not feature against South Korea or ****** an, however, and has not returned to the senior squad since.
He turns 20 on December 1st, 2026.

It's a full weekend of USMNT soccer including several possibilities for head-to-head matchups. We have players still looking to make their season debut as well as some who are needing to reestablish themselves after staying put despite indications that they would, or should, be moving elsewhere. There is quite a bit on, so here we go:
Olympique Lyon v Auxerre — 1:00p ET: Tanner Tessmann did not appear last weekend for Lyon as the team settled for a 1-1 draw with Le Havre. Tessmann had played midweek for the team in their Champions League qualification match so perhaps it was just rotation as players look to gain their mid-season form.

AS Monaco have announced the squad for their upcoming UEFA Europa Conference League campaign. Folarin Balogun has been notably omitted from the squad. It comes following the breakdown of his move to Everton on transfer deadline day.
Monaco announced their UECL squad on Thursday. Balogun was not in it. Whilst Nice-Matin have reported that the USMNT international is likely to remain at Monaco, at least until the winter, there is still the possibility for him to depart. The transfer windows in Turkiye and Saudi Arabia, notably, remain open.
Balogun returned to training for Monaco on Thursday, ahead of Friday night's game against Paris Saint-Germain. He has not been included in the matchday squad for that game, however. Lamine Camara (22) is currently undergoing a medical ahead of a move to Chelsea from Monaco before the transfer deadline, according to a report from Fabrizio Romano. As reported by RMC Sport, the Premier League club have reached an agreement in the region of €50m plus bonuses to sign the Senegalese international midfielder before the transfer window closes.
Chelsea had been in negotiations with Les Monégasques throughout deadline day to sign the 22-year-old as they searched for a replacement for Enzo Fernández (25), who looks set to join Manchester City for a record-equalling British fee of £125m. The Côte d'Azur outfit originally commanded a fee in the region of €70m, due to their lack of need to sell with Folarin Balogun seemingly joining Everton. The sale of Aladji Bamba to Newcastle United could allow Monaco to retain the latter.
However, unlike Camara, Balogun was keen to leave the Principality club. ASM, meanwhile, moved early in the window to secure his replacement in the form of Matthis Abline. By freeing up a non-EU spot, Monaco will also be able to finalise the arrival of Erik Lira.

Another day, another suitor for Iliman Ndiaye. In today's version, it's Tottenham Hotspur who have reached an agreement in principle with Everton for the Senegal international for a fee of about £60 million.
In his comments yesterday after Spurs sunk to their second consecutive league defeat to start the season, Roberto De Zerbi indicated that Richarlison had asked to leave the club 'many times', and now that will be allowed with a move to the Toffees accepted for about £35 million.
There had been a hue and cry when Everton had been forced to sell Richarlison quickly to Spurs a few years ago for £60m to balance the books at the end of the financial year, when his performances saving Everton from relegation demanded more. Now it looks like the Toffees are selling another forward in his prime for lower than his market value, and to add insult to injury, are overpaying for the Brazilian to return too given how his career has tailed off with injuries and the like.
As of this afternoon the Toffees appear to still be working on a loan for Jack Grealish, close to making a move for right back Kenny Tete from Fulham, and also have an interest in USMNT striker Folarin Balogun. Beto appears to be headed to Fiorentina and Adam Aznou on loan to Malaga.

As they reflect on the club-record, reported $15 million transfer of homegrown star Zavier Gozo to English Premier League side Crystal Palace, the leadership team at Real Salt Lake quickly points out that one person above all is responsible for the 19-year-old attacker's rapid ascent.
"Gozo deserves the lion's share of credit for his development," emphasized RSL sporting director Kurt Schmid in a conversation with MLSsoccer.com.
"One of the things that is kind of impossible for us to do is to instill in these kids the desire to improve and the responsibility in their own development. So from right away, Gozo showed that.
"A very unique individual," Schmid added of the USMNT hopeful. "There's not more like him just lying around waiting to be scooped up."

The last offseason saw the Philadelphia Union dump several former players to other teams in the league, including their leading goalscorer from the prior season, Tai Baribo, to DC United; Jakob Glesnes to the LA Galaxy; and Kai Wagner to EFL Championship side Birmingham City. Simply put, some of the bigger names for the clubs all went in a single window.
This fleet of departures wasn't helped out at all after the team failed to make any meaningful signings in the transfer market, which could've been a key contributing factor in why the team went from the top team in the Eastern Conference last season to dead last heading into the World Cup break earlier in the Summer.
Just as the team appears to be getting itself together, chaining some crucial wins in the MLS and shooting up the table in a last-ditch playoff push, the front office has been busy adding to the roster, mainly their defense.
According to a recent report by The Athletic's Tom Bogert, Philadelphia is nearing a deal to bring Mark McKenzie back to Subaru Park, six years after his departure from the MLS, with the deal being close to $2.5 million.

The Athletic and Sky Germany both report that Borussia Mönchengladbach attacker Giovanni Reyna is in talks over a possible move to RC Strasbourg. Negotiations involving the 23-year-old United States international and the two clubs remain at an early stage. For the past six years, Bundesliga matches have aired primarily on ESPN+ in the U.S., with a limited number set aside for ESPN linear networks. That deal earned the German league $30 million per year, according to reports from when the deal was signed.
