The Diamondbacks selected the contract of first baseman Pavin Smith from Triple-A Reno, bringing back the longtime lefty bat a couple of months after his struggles in the majors led to him being designated for ****** ignment.
To make room, the Diamondbacks optioned catcher Adrian Del Castillo.
Smith went a miserable 11 for 78 (.141) with one homer in 28 games before the Diamondbacks moved on from him in July. Smith cleared waivers and was outrighted to Reno, where he hit .287/.423/.504 in 39 games. He was even better in recent weeks, going 15 for 47 (.319) with four homers and a 1.109 OPS over his past 13 games.
"It's an opportunity for Pavin to go and show what he can do against some right-handed pitching," Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. "He's been performing in Triple-A. We're just curious to see what it looks like this time around. I know the last time around it did not go well at all, but he's going to get a start here and there and it's an opportunity for him to show us where he's at and what he's picked up since he was sent back down."
Lovullo added: "The Triple-A staff felt very strongly he could come back up here and help contribute."

Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, gaining confidence with every match, cruised into the US Open quarter-finals on Sunday with a comprehensive victory over Tommy Paul.

Fans may notice something is missing from the Illini hoops schedule this season, leaving them asking, where are the big home games?
It's no secret Brad Underwood has worked hard at strengthening the Illini's non-conference schedule, from agreeing to home-and-home deals, and booking out the United Center or Madison Square Garden. It just so happens that excitement will be lacking at State Farm Center this year.
A large portion of this is luck of the draw; it's the Illini's turn to travel to Cameron Indoor and battle the Blue Devils, and they'll return the favor in 2028. The same goes for Texas Tech, who will also travel to Champaign in 2028. However, away games aren't the only hurdle Underwood's squad will face, as they meet North Carolina, Missouri, and UConn, for neutral site games. The good news is UConn is being hosted at the United Center, an arena accessible to many Illini fans.
Something fans can keep in mind is that this could potentially mean a loaded home non-con schedule for the 2027-2028 season. With a "blue blood" like Duke already scheduled for SFC, any extra addition would make for a good home schedule.
Just because Kansas or UConn isn't playing the Illini in Champaign doesn't mean there is nothing to look forward to. Penn will be meeting in Champaign on Thursday, Nov. 5, looking for a rematch to its first round NCAA tournament loss the Illini handed to them (and the return of Illini arch-nemesis Fran McCaffery). Sophomore David Mirkovic posted a career high 29 points against the Quakers, and is slated to return from a left foot surgery right in time for this game.

With the saga finally somewhat behind them, the focus now shifts back to the trade between the two sides. ESPN's Shams Charania believes the deal will be finalized within the next few days.

The Auburn Tigers are just days away from opening the 2026 season against the Baylor Bears in the Aflac Kickoff Game in Atlanta, Georgia.
The Tigers would love nothing more than to start the Alex Golesh era with a win, which would be a great start toward building momentum for the rest of the season. However, Auburn is one of two SEC teams facing a Power Five opponent in Week 1, which will provide the Tigers with a great challenge early in the season.
The Tigers and Bears met in Week 1 of the 2025 season, with Auburn taking down home-standing Baylor, 38-24, in Waco. Both teams would go on to finish the season with 5-7 records; however, only one team will begin the season with a new coach.
Auburn fired Hugh Freeze and later hired Alex Golesh, while Dave Aranda gets one more season with Baylor. However, he starts the season on the hot seat, and a win over Auburn would do wonders for his job security. A game of this magnitude could go either way, but here are five reasons why Auburn football could struggle against Baylor on Saturday in Atlanta.

With 4:59 remaining in the third quarter on Saturday afternoon, NC State backup quarterback Will Wilson took a designed run up the middle and into the end zone. After converting on a two-point conversion, the Wolfpack had cut Virginia's advantage to 24-8.
The Cavaliers' lead inside a sold-out Scott Stadium wasn't in any immediate jeopardy, but for the first time, the visitor's sideline had a hint of momentum.
Over the next 12:15 of game time, however, the 'Hoos slammed the door shut with deafening authority. How has the DPL benefitted Delhi cricket so far?

DPL has been consistently throwing up names who are fetching good prices in the IPL. We expect a few more this year. But it has turned around the women's game altogether. The senior Delhi team won the women's national one-day tournament. The U-23 team has won once and finished runners-up once.

How does it impact the revenue?

All I can say is that the DDCA can now take care of the expenses for all the Delhi state teams across age-groups and genders throughout the year with the profit we make from this league.

There have been doubts cast on quality of players playing, especially with the Dev Chaudhary controversy...

DDCA, by principle, revisits every regulation of the league after each season. I feel for the boy for what he has to go through.

What's the plan with the new stadium?

We have identified two spots in Delhi. One is the landfill in Okhla and the other is near Badarpur. We are in the process of finalising the venue to build a stadium with 70-80k capacity. We are in talks with BCCI to come up with suggestions or a collaboration to create a state-of-the-art facility.

Many players avoid playing Ranji Trophy and just focus on T20 leagues...

That is something we have observed, especially with a few senior fast bowlers. We will keep a close watch on them this season. If they dodge Ranji Trophy, they will not be considered for Delhi in other formats.

Unfortunately for Elliot Anderson, his home debut for Manchester City only lasted 63 minutes. The England international was substituted due to cramp in the second half of Manchester City's 2-1 win over Bournemouth. However, it may have been Maresca's plan to take off Anderson around that time of the game anyway before cramp struck. While Anderson was on the pitch, he showed plenty of positive signs and it is easy to see how his strengths as a player will suit this Manchester City side.
Until Elliot Anderson was substituted after 63 minutes, he was nearly the best-performing player on the pitch for Manchester City against Bournemouth. Anderson played alongside Marc Guehi in the double pivot that Enzo Maresca prefers to use in midfield. With Marc Guehi playing in an unfamiliar role, Anderson was more than willing to drop in and offer Guehi an option when the makeshift midfielder had possession. That was pleasing to see and showed that Anderson had a great read on the situation at hand.
In terms of what Anderson offered in possession that really caught the eye. As per Anderson's pass map on SofaScore, the Manchester City midfielder received possession all over the pitch. When City had possession in the final third, he took up the 'Kevin De Bruyne' position on the right. Once Anderson and his teammates are on the same wavelength this should be a viable source for City to create chances and goals.
Where Elliot Anderson's radar was just off was with his long passing. He completed 1/4 but it was easy to see how much Anderson's ability to switch the play and break the lines will be vital to Enzo Maresca's side. Also, Elliot Anderson's set-piece delivery looms as a major weapon. He should have had his first Manchester City ***** ist just after halftime as his pinpoint corner was met by Marc Guehi. Unfortunately, Guehi headed a great chance from two yards out wide of the target. Despite this, Anderson's set-piece delivery should be a weapon that City profit off of.
One of the major strengths of Elliot Anderson's play is his ability to cover the pitch out of possession and win duels. With how Manchester City's win over Bournemouth played out, this wasn't a standout aspect of his performance. But you could still see how his energy and ability to work for his team out of possession will help shape Manchester City's rebuild midfield.

Former West Bromwich Albion player Quévin Castro has died at the age of 25 after collapsing during a friendly match in Portugal.
The Portuguese-English midfielder was representing Real SC against Estrela da Amadora on Saturday morning when he became unconscious during the opening minutes of the fixture.
Medical teams from both clubs immediately rushed to his aid, with a defibrillator also used in an attempt to save his life. Emergency services were called to the scene and paramedics continued efforts to resuscitate Castro, but he was later **** ounced dead.
Born in Portugal, Castro moved to England in 2017 at the age of 16. He spent time in the youth systems of Chelsea and West Bromwich Albion before playing for several clubs in the country.
He returned to Portugal this season after signing for Real SC, with the midfielder hoping to help the club compete in the Campeonato de Portugal.

Chicago Bears training camp is in full swing ahead of the 2026 regular season. Under second-year head coach Ben Johnson, the Bears are looking to build on their success from last year and keep pace in a crowded NFC with important meetings and practices at Halas Hall.
Thursday's practice was a breath of fresh air as the Bears traveled to Cincinnati to take on the Bengals for a joint practice ahead of their preseason game this weekend. It was a back-and-forth affair with each team's offense trading blows, while their defenses stepped up in key moments.
Following every Bears training camp practice, we at Bears Wire will highlight the top players who stood out on the field. Here are the players who stood out from the joint practice:
Thursday's practice was the first time quarterback Caleb Williams had faced a different defense than his own since the divisional playoffs and he gave the Bengals defense fits while impressing the Cincinnati media in attendance. FOX 19's Jeremy Rauch said Williams "cooked" during 7-on-7 drills. The Bears quarterback delivered touchdowns to wide receivers Rome Odunze and Kaden Davis, along with a strike to tight end Colston Loveland (more on him in a bit) in 11-on-11s. His score to Odunze came while on the move to his left as the receiver broke free.
It wasn't perfect by any means, though. Williams threw a pair of picks and got sacked near the end of practice. But NBC 5 Cincinnati's Charlie Clifford jotted Williams' stats and had him completing 16-of-26 passes, including 10 straight in 11-on-11 drills. Meanwhile, Bengals star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, who intercepted Williams, called him a "special quarterback" after the practice. Clearly, Williams made a strong impression on the Bengals beat with some strong throws.

Mendoza Mania, Round 2.
Las Vegas Raiders No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza will likely get his second crack at NFL competition on Thursday, Aug. 20. The Raiders will take on the Houston Texans in both teams' second – and penultimate – preseason game. Both teams are still seeking their first exhibition win.
Mendoza had a solid preseason debut against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1 – even if he felt otherwise. His final line was 10-for-16 (62.5% completion rate) with 97 passing yards and a throwing touchdown. On the game's film, he proved he was able to adjust well to the heightened game speed of the NFL after a four-year college career. Mendoza made some nice throws with good ball placement, and he managed to read through his progressions quickly and with generally good decision-making.
Despite his impressive box score numbers, he said after the game he was disappointed with his first outing.
"Unfortunately, I let my teammates down today," Mendoza said. "But it's a growing experience ... and it showed me I need to grow a lot."

After fueling the Indiana Fever to three wins over the past week, Caitlin Clark has secured her second AP WNBA Player of the Week acknowledgment of the season.
In the three games played during the week spanning from Aug. 10 to Aug. 16, the former Hawkeye scored a ******* ulative 77 points this past week across three games, which was the most points scored by any player in the WNBA over the span.
With an average of 25.7 points on 50.9% shooting, Clark had the second-highest points-per-game average in the league. Meanwhile, Clark led the league with 29 total ******* ists and 9.7 ******* ists per game in that time frame.
In Indiana's win over the New York Liberty (Aug. 11) and the Dallas Wings (Aug. 14), Clark recorded back-to-back double-doubles, which now places her one shy of tying Minnesota Lynx's Courtney Williams for the second-most by a guard in WNBA history.

Genoa and Brighton have reached an agreement over a loan move for Evan Ferguson, with the Republic of Ireland striker set for a return to Serie A.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Cristopher Sánchez struck out six over six solid innings and became baseball's first 16-game winner as the Philadelphia Phillies outlasted the Miami Marlins 6-5 on Monday night.
Sánchez (16-4) allowed one run on eight hits for the Phillies (68-58), who moved into the second NL wild-card spot, one game ahead of San Diego.
The Marlins scored two runs on an unusual play in the seventh inning that led to manager Clayton McCullough being ejected. With the bases loaded, Javier Sanoja hit a low, opposite-field line drive that landed on the foul line in the outfield grass just past first base.
The hit was initially declared foul. Phillies right fielder Bryce Harper didn't field the ball, and all three runners crossed the plate. After a replay review, umpires ruled it fair but declared that only two runners scored, getting Miami within 4-3.
McCullough argued that the call cost the Marlins a run and was tossed. It was one of four times Miami moved within one run but could not take the lead. Brian Navarreto hit his first homer of the season, a solo shot off Brooks Raley in the eighth inning to get the Marlins within 5-4.

West Bromwich Albion head coach James Morrison says the thing that most frustrated him about captain Alex Mowatt's eve-of-season exit to Derby County was the timing of it.
For the second season running, following Darnell Furlong's departure to Ipswich Town a year ago, the Baggies have lost the captain they started the season with.
But Mowatt's successor George Campbell proved a lucky on-field general in Saturday's somewhat fortuitous 2-1 win at Norwich.

"Did I ever think he could win the U.S. Amateur? No. Did I ever think he'd win it this year? Absolutely not," Andy Whaley told GOLF with a laugh as his son did the post-win media car wash.
Andy and his wife, Kerry, were scheduled to fly home on Saturday night. "That tells you how confident we were," Andy Whaley said with a chuckle. Instead, Andy Whaley, carrying his son's bag for the first time in five or six years, changed his flight and set out to walk Merion for a final day with his son.
This week's U.S. Amateur at Merion was golf watching in its purest form. The famed golf course opened its doors to the world's best amateurs and local crowds flocked by the thousands to walk its fairways, raid the pro shop and watch the best amateur golf has to offer. It was a week for the true, die-in-the-wool golf fans who appreciate and understand what the game has always been about.
It was fitting that, during a week about Merion, the Hugh Wilson design outside Philadelphia remained the main star throughout the week. The world's best amateurs — Preston Stout, Miles Russell, Tyler Watts and others — all either failed to make it out of stroke play or made an early match play exit. This week was about getting to see Merion, one of the game's great cathedrals, without it being overrun by giant buildouts and throngs of fans. It was just the world's best ams and fans who wanted to soak in good golf at a place steeped in history. It was about the magic and mystique of a place we rarely see.

The first round could fairly be called a decision in favor of Deshaun Watson. Shedeur Sanders, though, has a chance to deliver the equalizer with the second round this week.
No one believed that the Browns' quarterback competition was going to be settled in their preseason opener at the Chicago Bears. It was just the latest piece of a much bigger puzzle that will eventually provide enough evodence for coach Todd Monken to make a final decision.
"Well, again, I did feel going in the last game that it was relatively close in terms of both having an opportunity at the starting position," Monken said on a Zoom call Aug. 16. "So it would be unfair to not go into the next game and allow Shedeur that opportunity, albeit a different team, certainly at home. There's no guarantee that the same players will be playing this game, but it's the closest you have. And we owe it to both players who have really handled it well and have competed at a high level."

To that end, Watson did well, completing 10 of his first 11 passes, with the one incompletion being a drop. He finished 11-of-15 for 126 yards with a fumble on a sack and a 98.2 passer rating.

KL Rahul was forced to retire hurt on 77 during Day 1 of the first Test between India and Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium after suffering severe cramps and discomfort in his right hand. Rahul, who had played a composed and anchoring innings of 77 off 162 ****** , including nine fours and a six, was forced to leave the field shortly after the tea break. He received medical attention before walking back to the dressing room alongside the team physio.
Rahul initially appeared to be struggling with cramps and physical exhaustion. He was later seen experiencing discomfort in a finger on his right hand, with the Indian medical team ****** sing the issue. The India vice-captain had played a key role in putting India in a strong position before his departure. He retired hurt with India at 138/1, having provided stability at the top of the order.
Rahul's departure did not slow India's progress as Devdutt Padikkal continued his impressive innings and brought up his maiden Test century. Padikkal took charge after Rahul's exit and helped India move beyond the 200-run mark with captain Shubman Gill on strike.
