DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Lions know they are asking a lot of star running back Jahmyr Gibbs.
His next major test will come Thursday against the Buffalo Bills.
For the first three years of his career, Gibbs was paired with David Montgomery in Detroit's "Sonic and Knuckles" partnership. Montgomery wasn't a little-used backup, either. He averaged 853.3 yards and 11 touchdowns over the past three seasons.
Montgomery picked up where he left off Sunday, scoring three touchdowns, but that was for the Houston Texans in a 36-31 loss to the Bills.
At the same time, Gibbs was dealing with his new workload as Detroit's only experienced rusher. He averaged a career-high 18.8 touches per game last season, but got 34 in Sunday's 31-30 overtime win over the New Orleans Saints — three more than his previous high.

The Detroit Lions will be without Isiah Pacheco considerably longer than originally hoped.
Dan Campbell revealed Monday that the veteran running back underwent surgery and will be "out awhile." Campbell did not specify whether the procedure addressed Pacheco's knee or back, the two injuries that derailed his first training camp in Detroit.
That is a rough turn for a player the Lions signed in March expecting him to provide a physical complement to Jahmyr Gibbs. Pacheco arrived in Detroit after four seasons with Kansas City, where he rushed for 2,537 yards and won two Super Bowls.
Pacheco initially suffered a sprained MCL during training camp. At the time, Campbell believed the Lions had avoided a major problem, something we covered when Detroit first received encouraging news on the injury.
The knee later improved, but a back issue emerged late in camp and became the larger concern. Detroit ultimately placed Pacheco on injured reserve before Week 1, guaranteeing he would miss at least the first four games.

The Kansas City Chiefs decided to part with veteran running back Isiah Pacheco earlier this year as they looked to rebuild their offense after a failed 2025 campaign.
Pacheco quickly found work with the Detroit Lions, who signed him to a one-year contract in free agency.
While Detroit's ground game was already spearheaded by speedy rusher Jahmyr Gibbs, Pacheco was expected to make an immediate impact for the Lions as a second or third option in the team's offensive backfield.
Instead, Pacheco has found on Detroit's injured reserve list to start the 2026 season, and he failed to make his debut in the Lions' Week 1 overtime win against the New Orleans Saints on September 13.
With Pacheco on the sideline, Detroit leaned on Gibbs in the running game, giving the former Alabama Crimson Tide star 29 carries in its 31-30 victory over New Orleans.

At the end of Stage 1, the NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series field filed down pit road for standard pit stops, but things quickly went very wrong.
On the narrow pit road, there was a check-up that led to Rajah Caruth and Nick Sanchez spinning. It was an accordion effect as cars piled in, pushing each other into the wreck.
Caruth's car clipped crew members of Brent Crews' No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing, who also narrowly avoided being crushed by Sanchez's out-of-control car. It was a truly frightening moment that could have resulted in severe injuries, but thankfully, everyone was okay.
That was such a close call for Bryan Backus on the rear of the No. 19.

It's finally here. Time to bring the early looks to the table. This is Week 1 for everyone, which means that the players' prices were established in July; take advantage of that. We know (for the most part) who will be the value picks and who is undervalued; take advantage of that.

The home Raiders scored 20 straight points after giving up a 95-yard touchdown run and a pair of interceptions. That enabled the No. 4 team in the North Jersey Public Super 20 to topple No. 12 Ridgewood, 43-24, at Drew Gibbs Field on Sept. 10.
Ramapo's top three backs combined to rush for 250 yards, and quarterback Luke Magerko threw a 70-yard TD pass to Cole Seyffer for the Raiders' longest play of the night.
The special teams chipped in with a Brandon Barry blocked punt that Tyler Sorafine recovered in the end zone. Marcello Tirri gave the defense a lift with an interception on the second play of the second half, which led to the second of three Joey Gorga touchdown runs.

Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs was rewarded in August with a three-year, $67.5 million contract extension, a deal that made him the highest-paid running back in NFL history as he enters his fourth season. He is one of the core pieces on this offense for the Lions.
Gibbs is primed for a huge season after the Lions traded running back David Montgomery to the Houston Texans in March. As the featured three-down back, it is quite possible that Gibbs can carry the ball more than 300 times in the 2026 NFL season.
Candace Pedraza of Side Lion Report listed five winners and three losers from the offseason as Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season approaches. Gibbs landed on the winners side alongside the rookie class, Aidan Hutchinson, Isaac TeSlaa and the team's undrafted free agents. Pedraza wrote:
"Gibbs has an excellent shot at winning OPOY or MVP, or both, this season. He's not only about to see a major uptick in carries this season with the trade of Montgomery going down this offseason, but the Lions' "light" schedule should make his ability to break some rushing records fairly simple. That's all ****** uming, of course, that the Lions' offensive line makes his life this easy.
But, coming off a historic extension and getting handed the keys to the ground game should be extra motivation for a competitor like Gibbs this season."

Chase Briscoe left Darlington Raceway with a solid finish, but it was difficult for the Joe Gibbs Racing driver to view it that way.
Briscoe finished sixth in Sunday's Southern 500 after leading 30 laps and spending much of the night in contention for the victory. More importantly, he entered the race as the two-time defending winner and had a chance to become the first driver to win three consecutive Southern 500s.
Instead, Christopher Bell captured the Chase opener.
For Briscoe, the frustration centered on the final restart.
After a late caution, Briscoe chose the inside lane and initially appeared to have an opportunity to control the closing laps. Instead, several cars passed him after Turn 2, dropping him to sixth by the finish.

During the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway, the No. 23 23XI Racing Toyota pit crew of Bubba Wallace set a new pit stop record while changing four tires during the race.
The crew completed the stop in 7.86 seconds, beating the previous record of 7.98, which was held by the pit crew for the No. 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota of Christopher Bell and took place as Las Vegas Motor Speedway in March of the year. Those are the only two known four-tire pit stops under eight seconds.
Wallace's blistering fast pit crew responsible for the stop included front tire changer Austin **** ey, rear tire changer Adam Hartman, tire carrier Joe Crossen, jackman Nathan Ricketts, and fueler Joshua Pech.

Christopher Bell opened The Chase for the NASCAR Cup Series by earning his first victory of the 2026 season. After passing Kyle Larson for the lead with 12 circuits remaining, Bell captured the victory in Sunday night's Cook Out Southern 500 at the Darlington Raceway.
It was Bell's first Darlington win, first victory of the 2026 season and 14th career Cup win overall. The win was huge for Bell's championship hopes as he moved into the second position in the standings, 12 points behind leader Denny Hamlin.
It was a trying evening for Hamlin, who entered the Chase as the top seed. In the final stage, contact between Hamlin and Michael McDowell caused toe link damage on the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota.
The contact forced Hamlin to go a lap behind. The 45-year-old gained his lap back and ultimately finished 18th. Going into Darlington, Hamlin had a 25-point lead over second place Ryan Blaney. Now, the JGR driver has a 12-point edge over Bell.
William Byron had a difficult evening at Darlington as he posted a DNF of 37th place. The driver of the No. 24 suffered a flat tire in the final stage, then suffered an engine failure on the subsequent restart.

Christopher Bell and the No. 20 team for Joe Gibbs Racing won at Darlington Raceway, earning their first victory of the 2026 Cup Series season. Meanwhile, Denny Hamlin struggled after damage, shrinking his championship lead.
Leaving Darlington, Hamlin only holds a 12-point advantage over Bell for the lead in the Chase. There are nine races remaining, so there is plenty of time; however, it wasn't an ideal start for the No. 1 seed. For Bell, it was a much-needed victory in the 2026 Southern 500 at Darlington.

That could have been catastrophic in the first pit stall. Good job the boys not making a mistake much worse. Just lost a little bit of track position at a critical time. I think for us, where our car went was just track position. We got where it needed to be for that final restart. It was a little tough at the end, but we know where we need to be at the end of this race and years to come. Good day for the Chase. Really want to win this race bad and one day we will. Nottingham Forest were left furious as a potential winner against Tottenham was controversially ruled out by VAR for a handball on Neco Williams.
The 0-0 draw at the City Ground left both sides without a win in the Premier League this season but Forest were close to taking all three points.

The incident came halfway through the second half after Morgan Gibbs-White was slipped through on goal and looked to ******* his finish over the goalkepeer.
Gibbs-White's goal-bound chip could have been cleared fairly easily by Sandro Tonali but the Spurs midfielder missed his kick as the ball bounced towards the line.

After a slow start to the season, there would have been hope that this fixture against Nottingham Forest would be the moment things started to click for Tottenham Hotspur. Instead, Spurs had to settle for a goalless draw as their wait for a first Premier League goal of the season continued.
Roberto De Zerbi made three changes from the loss against Newcastle United, with Destiny Udogie and Savio getting their first league starts of the season, and Conor Gallagher returning to the XI in favor of Mateus Fernandes. Forest made one change, as Liam Delap was preferred to Igor Jesus up front.
This first half was full of physicality but not much quality. Both sides struggled to create clearcut scoring opportunities, with set pieces and long-range efforts the only real threats from either side. There was a sort of symmetry to the chance creation, though, as both Spurs and Forest saw attackers in behind one-on-one with the keeper only for the attacker to fail to capitalize and the referee to also call the play back. Omar Marmoush for Spurs was the first, breaking away from Neco Williams to latch onto Porro's long ball, only for a foul to be awarded to Williams for a shove by the Egyptian; while Morgan Gibbs-White was flagged for offside as he sprinted in behind Jan Paul van Hecke.
With both sides failing to score in the first half, it looked like Forest may have opened the scoring in the second. Really poor positioning from Jan Paul van Hecke allowed Gibbs-White to get in behind; Kinsky did enough to at least deflect Gibbs-White's shot, but Sandro Tonali whiffed on a clearance before Williams appeared to bundle the ball into the net by way of a diving header. It was a calamitous concession by Spurs, but one that did not stand for long, as replays showed the ball ended up in the net off Williams' arms with VAR overturning the goal.
A flurry of substitutions followed from both sides as both managers searched for a winner. Neither side was able to muster the quality to create anything to break the deadlock, however, and a late headed chance from substitute Dominic Solanke that went well over the crossbar was the final chance of a reasonably low-quality affair with the match finishing 0-0.

While the Detroit Lions are preparing for the 2026 season, the latest NFL rumors project that the team could lose one player. According to Dan Graziano of ESPN, the Lions have committed more than $1 billion to star players, including running back Jahmyr Gibbs, which leaves veterans Brian Branch and Sam LaPorta fighting for new contracts this upcoming season. Graziano does not expect a new contract to materialize before Week 1, but Lions general manager Brad Holmes expresses his desire to keep all star players from the 2023 draft class, including LB Jack Campbell, for a "long time."
"We still want to keep those guys around; those plans haven't changed," Holmes said Wednesday, via Richard Silva of The Detroit News. "There's a couple factors that we've still got to sort through. But in terms of us wanting those guys around? Absolutely. Hopefully, we can get that done."
"Hopefully" is a strong word for the Lions. Detroit is walking into the season without triggering new deals for Branch or LaPorta, who are both coming off season-ending injuries. Both are also set to become unrestricted free agents next offseason.

Unfortunately, it will probably come down to who can stay healthier and make an immediate impact this upcoming campaign. After all, Branch and LaPorta have proven to be top-5 athletes when healthy. However, the former second-round pick and 2024 Pro Bowl safety may have an edge here. The Lions were forced to release cornerback Terrion Arnold this offseason due to the latest investigation, and if they give up another elite secondary threat, it could become detrimental to the team's defense.

The Detroit Lions are entering the 2026 NFL season with a new offensive coordinator leading the way. Drew Petzing, who's been with the Arizona Cardinals for a while before this Lions gig, is now calling the shots on offense.
But even with change, Jahmyr Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Sam LaPorta should still be able to thrive. That's exactly what ESPN's Dan Graziano is predicting will happen in 2026. But in a way that would be a bit of a surprise.
Instead of St. Brown leading the offense like normal, he's predicting that Williams will wind up as the Lions' leading receiver this upcoming season. If this came true, it would be a huge surprise considering what the Lions' passing attack has looked like in recent years.
"Don't be surprised if ... Jameson Williams is the team's leading receiver," Graziano writes. "No disrespect to Amon-Ra St. Brown, one of the most consistent pass catchers in the entire league. But I think this Lions offense is going to hum this season, and Williams is the player poised to take the biggest leap."

Denny Hamlin posted an 11th-place finish in last Saturday's ***** e Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona. However, there was confusion on the driver of the No. 11's end on why he finished where he did.
Based on the timing of when the caution came on the final lap of Saturday's NASCAR Cup Series race, Hamlin believes he scored a top-10 result. Instead, the 45-year-old was ranked 11th, while Josh Berry earned a ninth-place run.
The call to place Hamlin 11th left the Cup Series points leader puzzled after the race.
It did not matter to Hamlin where he finished at Daytona. Because the Joe Gibbs Racing star had already locked up the top seed for the Chase, he was not concerned about points.
However, Hamlin had a discussion with NASCAR following the race as he revealed on his "Actions Detrimental" podcast. Hamlin plans to have a follow-up discussion about the caution light procedure in the future to avoid future misunderstandings.

Denny Hamlin is entering the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series Chase with one of the best opportunities of his career to finally capture his first championship.
The Joe Gibbs Racing driver will lead the 16 driver postseason field as the No. 1 seed after putting together a dominant regular season. Hamlin officially clinched the top seed following his seventh place finish at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. He enters the Chase with a 25 point advantage over Ryan Blaney.
Hamlin's regular season was highlighted by an impressive three-race winning streak. He picked up victories at Nashville Superspeedway, Michigan International Speedway and Pocono Raceway, establishing himself as one of the strongest drivers in the series heading into the postseason.
Consistency has also been a major reason for Hamlin's success. After 26 regular-season races, he finished with 1,027 points before the championship reset. That reset puts him at 2,100 points to begin the Chase, giving him the largest starting advantage in the 16 driver field.
Now, Hamlin will try to turn that regular-season success into a championship.

Former Nottingham Forest midfielder Steve Hodge says Oliver Glasner's side "were the better team" against Liverpool and should have won the game.
Forest fans were dreaming of a third consecutive league win at Anfield when Morgan Gibbs-White gave them the lead from the spot, but Liverpool rallied again and Victor Munoz's late strike ensured the points were shared.
"We should have won [the match] with the chances we created, especially in the first half," said Hodge on BBC Radio Nottingham. "We were against a really lacklustre Liverpool team, who at times looked weak at the back and unsure of themselves.
"Forest have gone to Anfield and scored two goals and overall, were the better team. They had better team cohesion."

Liverpool rescued a point at Anfield, but ***** ody inside the home dressing room will be dressing this up as progress. A 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest meant more dropped points, more defensive questions and another reminder that fight alone does not win league matches.
Florian Wirtz said as much afterwards when speaking to liverpoolfc.com, and he did not waste words. "I'm very disappointed," he said. "Of course we demand from ourselves the most.
"We couldn't take the three points again, that's why I'm disappointed. We have to keep working on the things we can do better and we have to get back to winning ways."
Forest struck first through Dan Ndoye's ***** ist for Victor Munoz in the 24th minute, and Liverpool were chasing the game from there. They improved after the break and found an equaliser when Alexander Isak converted from close range in the second half.
Then came the familiar problem. Liverpool got back on terms and immediately handed Forest another opening. Morgan Gibbs-White converted from the spot to restore the visitors' lead, exposing the same defensive frailties that have cost points too often.

The Lions came into the summer with a plan for Isiah Pacheco to be their No. 2 running back behind Jahmyr Gibbs, but Pacheco has dealt with multiple injuries this month and that may lead them in a different direction.
Jacob Saylors ran 17 times for 100 yards in Saturday's preseason finale and he had 14 carries for 87 yards in the team's other two games. It is Year 2 for Saylors in Detroit, but he only played eight offensive snaps while seeing regular time on special teams in his 15 appearances.
The offensive action may have been limited, but head coach Dan Campbell said on Saturday that Saylors's experience in the system leaves him comfortable about moving forward with him in the backup role.
"I am," Campbell said, via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. "I'm comfortable with those guys. And I just like the thought of having a guy in our system, think that's important. Knows our terminology, knows our guys, knows the protections. Just kind of knows it all, man. Understands our quarterback and how he thinks. I just think that's important."
Pacheco added a back injury to a sprained MCL recently and his status for Week 1 is up in the air. If he can't go, Saylors is in line for a chance to build on the positive impression he made in the preseason.

Shane van Gisbergen won his first stage win on an oval of his NASCAR career.
But it didn't come without controversy.
The Trackhouse Racing driver ******* ped the back of Kyle Larson's Chevrolet as they approached the finish line to end Stage 1 of the ******* e Zero Sugar 400 at Daytona on Aug. 29. Larson then ran into the back of race leader Chris Buescher to send both Larson and Buescher into the frontstretch grass. Larson finished sixth and Buescher went from the lead to 11th and didn't get any stage points.
Ryan Preece, Buescher's teammate, was collected in the wreck by Buescher and Larson when they went across the track to the grass. Preece entered the regular-season finale 17th in points, 31 points behind van Gisbergen for the final spot in the Chase.
Ty Gibbs finished second and Joey Logano finished third.

One Liverpool player was called out for a costly lapse shortly before Nottingham Forest's second goal at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
With 20 minutes of normal time remaining, Oliver Glasner's team took the lead for the second time on the day as Morgan Gibbs-White converted a penalty that Clinton Morrison felt was 'harsh' on the home side.
The spot kick was awarded after Alisson Becker was adjudged to have fouled Neco Williams inside the box, with the Forest full-back the fastest to react to a throw-in taken quickly by Liam Delap.
Liverpool Echo journalist Ian Doyle observed that the passage of play which led to the penalty incident stemmed from a lapse in concentration by Jeremie Frimpong, who allowed Williams to run off him and then was too slow to react as the throw-in was taken.
The reporter posted on X: 'Forest win a penalty as Williams is downed by Alisson. All came from Frimpong switching off at throw.'
