We said the Royals were pesky. They came in and proved it in Game 1.
Kansas City beat the Red Sox 3-2 at Fenway Park on Friday night. Not a great start to a series that matters. The Royals had no business being three up through three innings in this ballpark against this team—and yet there they were.
Sonny Gray was the story, and not the good kind. Kansas City touched him for 10 hits across six innings and scored all three of their runs before the third inning was over. Sal Perez's two-out single in the first got past a diving Caleb Durbin down the left field line. Then Carter Jensen's double in the third went high off the Monster, and Vinnie Pasquantino followed by finding the hole right past a shifted-up Nick Sogard to make it 3-0. Three runs. None of them were bloops—decent contact, all of it—just well-placed at the worst possible time.
Gray settled in after the third—and yes, technically this was a quality start, six innings and three earned, which is almost funnier than getting shelled would have been—and the bullpen held Kansas City scoreless in the eighth and ninth, including stranding a runner at third with one out in the top of the ninth. The European Central Bank is likely to deliver a 25 basis-point rate hike at its meeting concluding today. But while the direction of travel may be clear for now, the path beyond September is anything but.
The ECB is likely to keep its powder dry beyond today, with the path thereafter determined by how the economy and, above all, inflation respond to the renewed energy shock. The key message from the Governing Council is therefore likely to be hawkish: further hike(s) may be warranted if inflation risks intensify, but policymakers will want to retain flexibility rather than pre-commit to any specific policy path.
There is only modest evidence so far that inflation expectations are becoming less firmly anchored, although there may be growing concern that second-round effects may eventually turn a temporary energy shock into a more persistent inflation problem. The challenge for the ECB is that the economy has so far proven more resilient than expected, making an upside revision to its growth projections probable. Output rose more than anticipated during the second quarter, and business surveys are suggesting solid momentum ahead.
That resilience matters. A weaker economy would give policymakers more room to look through an energy-driven inflation spike. A more robust economy, by contrast, makes it harder to ***** ume that higher energy prices may simply wash through absent affecting wages, services prices and broader inflation behaviour.
Euro area headline inflation rose to 3.3% year on year last month (Figure 1), although the easing in core inflation to 2.4% does offer some reassurance. Marcus Thompson: I feel like they include him in the process. He's aware of what's going on. His voice matters, and as long as that's the case, Steph is fine. He's going to hold their feet to the fire; he's going to make sure they're sticking to it. The Warriors want to win. They are thirsty to win. So their match made heaven that way. As you can see, they tried to get every star out there. They failed, but... I mean, that's what it is at the end of a run, right? It's not going to be pretty. This was probably as best as you can hope for. Hopefully Jimmy Butler comes back for them, and they can make another run, and maybe upset somebody, maybe give it one last valiant effort. 1. How did K-State's offensive line look against Nicholls, and do the injuries to John Pastore and George Fitzpatrick look to hamper the Cats as much as it might seem?
The offensive line checked all the boxes it could on Saturday. There were a lot of questions surrounding this group entering the season, but game No. 1 was a success. That being said, Nicholls is just not a good football team, so it's tough to get too excited over that performance in the trenches. K-State simply had the bigger, more physically dominant dudes at the point of contact. Anything other than a promising night would have been a concern for the offensive line.
George Fitzpatrick not being able to give it a go didn't help matters, but Collin Klein & Co. certainly couldn't have been caught off guard when they learned he had to be sidelined this season. His health condition from last offseason just lingered and lingered, so it's not like this just happened out of nowhere. There was ample time to create a backup plan. John Pastore, though, was supposed to be not just a starter but a true star at left tackle. His injury, which will sideline him for the season, happened about a month before the season, and then Tanner Morley also had to miss some time late in camp, so everything kind of just compounded at once.

The SEC says that it's looking for an "appropriate resolution" after its presidents and chancellors met on Thursday following the drama surrounding LSU's pursuit of players who had signed NFL contracts.
The meeting was held a day after a hearing in the conference's suit against LSU and coach Lane Kiffin was continued. That continuance came after LSU filled its final two roster spots on Tuesday evening and left no ****** e to add former Ole Miss DT Zxavian Harris and ex-Rebels TE Dae'Quan Wright to the roster in 2026.
The two players had signed contracts with NFL teams but were cut during the preseason. They were eligible to return for a fifth season of college football after a Louisiana judge ruled that they should be granted an extra year following the NCAA's decision to give all college athletes in the class of 2023 and younger five years to play five seasons.
"The presidents and chancellors of the Southeastern Conference met Thursday by videoconference to discuss recent matters involving conference expectations and responsibilities," the SEC's brief statement said. "Those discussions will continue as the conference and its member universities work toward an appropriate resolution."
At one point, the Thursday meeting was slated to discuss the possibility of expelling LSU from the conference. As LSU had looked to sign both Harris and Wright, the conference made a rule that no player who had signed an NFL, NBA or WNBA contract could play for a member school.

The Los Angeles Clippers are still reeling in the aftermath of a cap circumvention scandal. For their part in helping Kawhi Leonard secure millions in off-the-court, "no-show" endorsement deals, the franchise had to give up five first-round picks and $30 million, culminating in one of the most severe penalties in NBA history.
Through it all, Kawhi escaped the scandal relatively unscathed. Besides a $700K fine, he didn't face any major consequences, and even his trade to the Toronto Raptors remains completely untouched. And yet, even now, the Clippers have yet to finalize the trade, leading some executives to suspect they are considering some sort of revenge against Leonard for how he's turned his back on the team.
"The Raptors, I'm told, are eager to consummate the trade after initially placing it on hold July 9 (to guard against a Leonard suspension or the outright voiding of his contract) and still firmly believe that the deal will happen as agreed upon and intended. Ditto for Leonard and his camp," wrote NBA insider Marc Stein. "Yet the delay has naturally led some league observers to wonder aloud whether the Clippers are holding off — or considering something even more drastic — to spite Leonard for so readily accepting the league's punishment rather than invoking his right to pursue an appeal. Any formal appeal within the NBA's auspices in such matters, remember, must be initiated by the player in question rather than the team according to league by-laws."
The Clippers have given up everything for Kawhi, and they set themselves back 10 years just to make him happy. From his very arrival, Kawhi was making outlandish requests and even forced the Clippers to give up five first-round picks (along with future MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander) in a deal for Paul George.
