The Green Bay Packers returned to winning ways following a 27-19 result over the Carolina Panthers in Week 8. It marked Josh Jacobs' second game back after the three-time Pro Bowler spent the first six weeks of the season on the NFL's exempt list stemming from an offseason incident with a former partner.
Jacobs saw a sizeable increase in workload and was fairly productive in the home win, rushing for 39 yards on 21 carries while logging 13 receiving yards on six catches for two touchdowns.

Josh Jacobs scored a one-yard touchdown to help the Green Bay Packers reclaim the advantage midway through the second quarter. However, the Alabama product drew backlash for his TD celebration because it looked like he was mocking his arrest last May. In his postgame interview, Jacobs explained the full context behind the action.
"They didn't even get the whole celebration," Jacobs told ESPN's Rob Demovsky. "But anyways, me and Savion came up with the celebration, if they would have seen the whole celebration. Basically, last week, we said the first celebration: when I score, I was gonna thank God; that's what I did last week. The second was going to be 'Break Every Chain.' It's a gospel song. That was gonna be the next celebration. It's a correlation. The media is gonna run with it. They're gonna make it something that it wasn't. But it is what it is."

Oct. 30 (UPI) -- Jordan Love threw three touchdown passes while the Green Bay Packers defense harassed opposing quarterback Bryce Young to beat the Carolina Panthers in primetime.
The Packers quarterback completed 30 of 41 passes for 288 yards in the 27-19 victory Thursday in Green Bay, Wis. Running back Josh Jacobs totaled 42 yards from scrimmage and two scores in the win.
"We talk about how tough these short weeks are," Love told reporters. "We've had two throughout the season so far. The way we came out and just executed today from the get-go was so much better than the last time we played a Thursday night game. That's what it's gotta be about."
The Packers, who overcame two deficits, out-gained their visitors 354-258 in total yards and held a 21-14 advantage in first downs. They scored 21 consecutive points from the start of the second quarter into the third quarter to take control of the Monday Night Football clash.

An already-depleted Carolina Panthers cornerback room got even thinner on Thursday night.
Rookie Will Lee III, who had been playing some admirable ball in the absences of starters Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson, went down with a hamstring injury in the second quarter of the 27-19 loss. The setback occurred on a 53-yard reception by Green Bay Packers wideout Christian Watson, as the 2026 fourth-round pick went down in his pursuit and would later be carted away to the locker room.
Head coach Dave Canales told reporters after the game that the extent of Lee's injury was "pretty good," and addressed the troubles his defense had in containing Green Bay's passing attack.
"Kinda battled out there and gave everything he [Lee] had on that one to affect the play," Canales stated. "But besides that, early on, they were having a lot of success in some third-and-longer types of situations. I'd love to see us get off the field in those moments—because we did a great job of first and second down, owning the run game and minimizing them. It really should've been an advantage for our defense in those modes."
Packers quarterback Jordan Love finished having completed 30 of his 41 throws for 288 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. He also led his offense to a 56.3-percent success rate (nine-of-16) on third downs.

The UC Bearcats didn't have long to celebrate their upset of eighth-ranked Texas Texas on Homecoming last week.
That's because the Bearcats now face undefeated and No. 6 Utah, which has the nation's longest active win streak at 13 games. The Utes' last loss was in last year's "Holy War" to rival BYU in Provo, 24-21 Oct. 18, 2025. The Bearcats would benefit if the Utes looked ahead to this year's BYU game, which Utah hosts Nov. 7 at 10 a.m. at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
"I think for us, we need to show how much of an environment we have here," UC head coach Scott Satterfield said. " I know it's Halloween, but dress up and come out yelling in this game. We're going to need to have that home field advantage because it certainly helped us last week, and we know when we play here it's different for us because of that. Hopefully, our fans will show up and be loud."
Utah quarterback Devon Dampier, backup quarterback Byrd Ficklin and running back Wayshawn Parker have all taken direct snaps and are all threats as UC found out last year in a 45-14 walloping in Salt Lake City. Dampier threw for 213 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 78 yards. Parker ran for 104 yards with a touchdown. Ficklin had just 14, but also scored and is every bit the runner Dampier is when in the game. Sometimes, they're both in the game.
"They do a lot of that and they have the talent to put out there," UC coach Scott Satterfield said. "It makes you have to go over all this stuff. Defensive coaches sit in the office all day anyway; it just makes them sit longer to go over all the formations you could get. We call it 'chasing ghosts'. You don't know what you're going to get."

Oct. 29—JAMESTOWN — Bismarck Century was the comeback kid on Thursday night.
The Patriots overcame deficits to defeat Jamestown 32-30, 25-23, 25-23. If the Patriots win their last regular season game against Minot, the team will clinch the regular season WDA ******* le and the No. 1 seed heading into the West Region volleyball tournament. Jamestown is now 15-2 in the West Region and 23-7 overall.
The showdown in Bismarck was a offensive juggernaut. Unofficially, the Blue Jays tallied 46 kills while Century unofficially racked up 48 kills. Century's Lily Edinger — a freshman — was responsible for 17 kills while Lucy Falk paced the Blue Jay offense with 15 kills. Final stats were not immediately available.
After two dropped sets, the Blue Jays came out with a fire under them in the third. The Jays established a 7-1 lead over the Patriots but Edinger scored four straight points to make it a 7-5 ball game. Jamestown surged out ahead again to take a 12-6 lead, but Century remained patient and point-by-point the Patriots gained the advantage.
Jamestown is set to play its last game of the regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 3 at Mandan. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.

HARRISONBURG, Va. (AP) — Hayden Wolfe kicked a 27-yard field goal in overtime and Troy rallied from a 14-point deficit to beat James Madison 24-21 on Thursday night.
Troy (4-4, 2-2 Sun Belt Conference) turned the ball over on downs at the Dukes' 41-yard line to start the game, and Camden Coleman tossed a 2-yard touchdown pass to Corey Scott on fourth-and-goal nine plays later for a 7-0 lead.
Coleman fired a 31-yard touchdown pass to Braeden Wisloski and James Madison (7-2, 4-2) led 14-0 after its first two possessions.
The Trojans cut it to 14-7 when Gavin Griffin ran it in from a yard out on the first play of the second quarter. Troy picked up three first downs on James Madison penalties to extend the drive.
The Dukes answered with a third straight touchdown drive, scoring on Seth Cromwell's 14-yard run for a 21-7 advantage at halftime.

In five games played since he emerged from a two-year retirement, Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald has yet to record a sack. During his weekly press conference on Thursday, Donald was asked whether that bothers him.
"No. I didn't come back for individual stats," Donald told reporters. "I would love to have some stats, but I'm here to just play the game. When the plays present themselves, take advantage of it, try to get my plays, but my main focus is trying to find ways to help this team win. That's the goal. I didn't come back to try to earn individual accolades or anything. I did that, accomplished that. It doesn't excite me. The only thing that excites me is winning so I'm just playing a football game, trying to do what I can to help this team. As long as we win, I can build off everything else and get myself better off that."
The Rams have won only three of seven games, and Donald has yet to play with Myles Garrett. Even though it was the trade that brought Garrett to the Rams that lit the fuse to get Donald to return.
Against the Raiders in Week 7, Donald was on the field for 74 percent of the Rams' defensive snaps. It was his highest rate of the season, and the more he's on the field, the more likely he'll be to get some of those stats he'd love to have — even if winning continues to be the focus.
The Rams should get their fourth win of the season on Sunday, against the 0-6 Chargers. If they don't, the Rams will be 3-5 through eight games and dangerously close to having too many losses to play beyond Week 18.

WESTERVILLE – Volleyball is a game of momentum, and winning the first set is crucial to a match.
Lancaster had all the momentum on its side in the first set against Dublin Coffman during the Central District Division I district championship game on Thursday, Oct. 29. However, the Lady Gales let the advantage slip away and never recovered in a hard-fought 26-24, 25-17, 25-19 loss at Westerville Central High School.
In the first set, the Gales had overcome a 20-19 deficit to take a 23-20 lead and looked like they were about to finish things off, but an unforced error gave the Shamrocks a little life they needed, and they outscored the Gales 6-1 to take the all-important first set.
From there, Lancaster seemed to be playing on its heels and never got into the rhythm during the next two sets.

Count Jake LaCava among the New Mexico United players who figures to have less of a strenuous weekend.
And it has little to do with what could happen on the pitch in the club's Western Conference quarterfinal playoff match against rival Phoenix Rising FC at 4 p.m. Sunday. It's more so about what New Mexico will — or won't, rather — be doing beforehand to get there.
No traveling to the airport. No getting on a plane. Just a short drive to Isotopes Park.
"I'm personally afraid of flying," the defender said Thursday. "... I sit there and grip on for dear life, and pray for a landing. … So it takes a lot of stress off me."
Such is the benefit of being the No. 1 seed in the West and the home-field advantage that comes with it, something United secured with last Saturday's 1-0 win at El Paso Locomotive FC in the regular-season finale on midfielder Valentin Noël's fourth-minute stoppage-time goal.

Ferrari had a perfectly good explanation for Austin qualifying ready before the cars were back in the garage: the straights. Lewis Hamilton said rivals keep accelerating where the Ferrari lifts, and he put the Red Bull Ford power unit's advantage at roughly three to four tenths a lap, while admitting he hadn't seen the data that weekend. It is a tidy story. It is also only half of what the official timing sheet says.
Here is the awkward detail: Charles Leclerc's quickest lap of the weekend came in Q2, not Q3. He went 1:34.198 to top the second session, then 1:34.267 in the shootout. Had he simply repeated the Q2 lap, it would have been quicker than every Q3 time except Kimi Antonelli's pole lap of 1:34.035. A straight-line deficit doesn't switch on between sessions, so something else changed in Q3.
Lining up each driver's Q2 and Q3 laps is revealing. Hamilton found 0.522s between sessions and still ended up fifth, 0.276s off pole. Isack Hadjar found 0.637s. Max Verstappen found 0.257s and Antonelli 0.243s. Leclerc found nothing; he went backwards by 0.069s and finished fourth, 0.232s adrift.
Leclerc's own explanation was the track cooling down and the tyres not coming up to temperature cleanly in Q3. Fred Vasseur said Ferrari was in the pole fight until the final corner. Those aren't the words of a team that was out-powered by half a second down the straights. They describe a team that left time in the final sector on a one-lap run where the window for the tyres is narrow.
To be clear, Hamilton's straight-line complaint can be true at the same time. A car that gives away a few tenths in a straight line needs everything else to be perfect on a qualifying lap, and Ferrari's margin for a slightly cold tyre is thinner than it looks. That is my read, not something either driver said, but it fits the numbers: Ferrari looked like pole contenders in Q2 and a fraction short in Q3 because the margin vanished the moment the tyres weren't ideal.

VALLARTA, Mexico — Karl Vilips used two long bridie streaks to take the first-round lead Thursday in the Mexico Open, the first of two straight PGA Tour events in the country.
Vilips shot a 9-under 62 in the afternoon round on the Vidanta Vallarta layout, making five straight birdies on Nos. 11-15 on his opening nine and finishing with four in a row. In between, he had another birdie and a bogey.
The 25-year-old Australian pointed to his driver.
"Had it on a string for the first nine," Vilips said. "Got a little loose in the middle and got it back on course toward the end of the round. It was lift, clean and place today so being in the fairway was a must for me and I took advantage of those drives that I hit."

ATLANTA – "We don't want to have to come back to Ballhalla."
It was part of a longer answer Kiah Stokes gave to reporters during Wednesday's practice availability. Stokes, and the Golden State Valkyries at large, obviously love their home crowd. It's one of, if not the most electric home court advantage in the WNBA. But going back would signal a Game 6 loss; within that lens, why play in front of that crowd again if you could handle business beforehand?
Ultimately, the Valkyries weren't able to get it done. Save any bail you want to shoot for the earlier-than-expected 12:30 ET tip-off time — **** ody on the Golden State side wants it, nor will they use it as an excuse.
A barrage of 3-pointers (6-of-8 in the opening frame), timely drives, and stellar defense sparked a 32-15 first quarter lead for the Atlanta Dream, one they ultimately never relinquished. The Dream were able to notch an impressive 80-69 victory to tie the series, setting up the two most exciting words in sports: Game 7.
Here are three numbers that popped in the Dream's Game 6 win, numbers the Valkyries need to flip in order to bring home their first championship.

I'm 67, my husband is 69, and we've been married 38 years. We've lived in the same four-bedroom colonial for 32 of those years. It's paid off and worth $1.5 million. We have another $1.8 million in retirement accounts and savings, plus Social Security and a small pension from his old job. No debt, and our kids are on their own.
So this isn't a money problem, but we can't talk about retirement anymore without it turning into a fight. He wants to buy something for $600,000 now that we are empty-nesters, and invest the rest. He has a spreadsheet. I've seen it open on the laptop at the kitchen table at 11 p.m., with property taxes, insurance and the lawn guy all in little columns.
My spouse was awarded $90,000 from my 401(k) in our divorce. How is that fair?

SAN FRANCISCO — The Atlanta Dream had a seven-point lead with 8:49 to play in Game 1 of the WNBA Finals. They proceeded to score 6 points the remainder of the way, falling behind 1-0 in the best-of-seven series that resumes Monday night at Golden State.
The Dream boast three all-defense selections, headlined by Angel Reese, this season's Defensive Player of the Year. Despite coach Karl Smesko's postgame lamentations about their defensive breakdowns during the second quarter when the Valkyries scored 28 points, Atlanta was more than good enough defensively to steal homecourt in the finals. In order to head back home tied in the series, the Dream have to score the ball better. That starts with Reese.
Atlanta built an 8-point lead in the first quarter with Reese scoring 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field. She ended the game with 14 points and didn't make another field goal, attempting only two shots in the second half.
"In the second half, in particular, we didn't move the ball well enough," Smesko said. "We did a little bit too much one-on-one instead of getting into actions. Angel had a great first half. We didn't get her the ball enough."
Movement and pace are key to unlocking Reese's offensive gifts, and the Dream were too slow and stagnant in Game 1 to take advantage of those skills.

Lazio stunned Juventus with a 3-0 victory at the Allianz Stadium yesterday, exposing the work still required for the Bianconeri to find consistency. The defeat was a major setback for Juventus, who had hoped to build on their late victory against Celta Vigo and deliver another strong performance in front of their home supporters.
Juventus were expected to be the stronger side after their European success, but they struggled to maintain their momentum. Without Luciano Spalletti on the touchline to direct the team, the Bianconeri found it difficult to control the contest and prevent Lazio from taking advantage of their opportunities.
Unlike in some of their recent matches, Juventus began with plenty of energy and intent. However, Lazio matched their intensity, making the opening stages an open and frantic contest in which both teams looked capable of creating danger.
Randal Kolo Muani appeared to have given Juventus the lead when he found the net, but his effort was ruled out for offside. Lazio then took their opportunity through Oliver Provstgaard, whose goal stood and put the visitors ahead.
Juventus gradually lost their momentum as the first half progressed, allowing Lazio to take greater control of the match. The home side struggled to regain the initiative, leaving them with plenty to address at the interval as they searched for a way back into the contest.

Reading Women fought back from 3-1 down at half-time to claim a thrilling 5-3 victory over Chesham United at The Meadow on Sunday.
Chesham made a flying start, with Holly Fitzgerald and Ruby Slade scoring within two minutes of each other to put the hosts 2-0 ahead. Alice Curr pulled one back for the Royals, but United restored their two-goal advantage before the break when Henrietta Cunnison headed home from a corner to make it 3-1 at the break.
The first half was made even worse after an injury to Leah Why, last weekend's hat-trick hero, who hobbled off with ****** istance from two members of the Reading coaching team before being taken to hospital for further tests.
Reading bounced back with a determined second half, however. Bethan Poole struck first to give the Royals renewed vigour before Nat Cowell scored twice to complete the turnaround and put Reading in front, before Ellie Luscombe opened her account for the season and added a fifth goal, capping off an impressive turnaround and putting the result beyond doubt.
In the most autumnal of conditions, with torrential rain falling throughout the afternoon, the Royals displayed grit, tenacity and strength of character, fighting back to secure their second consecutive away league win of the season.

Angry WNBA fans have called out the league over a fake $30 fine.
The Atlanta Dream and the Golden State Valkyries choosing to stay on the court during the national anthem in Game 1 of the 2026 WNBA Finals has made bigger headlines than the matchup itself.
Many have described this as disrespectful towards the US, and fans want both teams to be punished before Game 2.
An X handle took advantage of this and claimed that the WNBA has allegedly fined the Dream and Valkyries $30 each for their actions.
The viral fake post on X was posted by 'Fever Updates.' A handle notorious for spreading fake news, and it seems succeeded in doing so this time around.

It was everything the Houston Cougars envisioned when they joined the Big 12.
A ranked matchup, the program's first at TDECU Stadium since 2015. A sellout crowd of 42,544. And most importantly, a statement victory to catapult the Cougars further into the national conversation.
In front of the fourth-largest crowd in TDECU Stadium history, No. 20 Houston outlasted No. 18 Oklahoma State in an offensive shootout, earning its fourth consecutive victory and securing bowl eligibility with a 35-32 win.
"I really felt like we had a homefield advantage," Houston head coach Willie Fritz said. "They were loud and the student section I thought was outstanding. I appreciate everybody coming out and hopefully you saw what UH football is all about and also the experience here."
Houston never trailed after the first quarter, largely thanks to quarterback Conner Weigman. The rising Heisman candidate delivered arguably his finest performance in his five years of college football, bouncing back from an interception on the opening drive to throw for career-highs of 343 yards and five touchdowns. He completed 72.7 percent of attempts while consistently solving every puzzle the Oklahoma State defense threw at him.

Philadelphia Eagles RB Dameon Pierce carried 12 times for 35 yards and a touchdown in a Week 6 loss to the Carolina Panthers. He also caught four of his five targets for 15 yards.
SOURCE: USA TODAY
Why It Matters: The Eagles running back room has been decimated by injuries, so Pierce has gotten his chance the last two weeks. He had 11 carries for 14 yards last week against Jacksonville, so it would not be a stretch to say he didn't take advantage. That said, the offensive line is missing some key pieces and Jalen Hurts was put on IR over the weekend. Pierce should only be considered an emergency fantasy start until Saquon Barkley returns, which could be as soon as Week 7.

Excluding independents, it was the only non-conference matchup of Week 7.
For such a unique matchup this late in the season, it was bound to produce a unique result: South Florida defeated Kent State, 29-2.
Kent State became the first FBS team to score exactly two points since UMass did in a 20-2 loss to Florida Atlantic on Nov. 20, 2020.
The Golden Flashes led 2-0 after the first quarter Saturday night in Tampa. Immediately after a turnover on downs at the South Florida 3-yard line, Kent State managed to salvage some points through its defense. True freshman defensive end Dion'Dre Taylor stuffed USF running back D.J. Crowther in the end zone to hand the Golden Flashes their first lead against a non-conference FBS opponent since Sept. 9, 2023, when they led Arkansas 3-0.
It appeared as if Kent State would build on that early advantage. After the safety, the Golden Flashes drove down to the USF 1-yard line. Kent State lined up in a tush push formation, attempting a quarterback sneak to extend the lead. However, an unclean center-quarterback change left the ball on the floor, and former 5-star defensive end recruit C.J. Hicks scooped it up and ran 99 yards for his first career touchdown.

The Tampa Bay Rays are one win away from reaching the World Series after defeating the Cleveland Guardians 3-1 in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series on Sunday. Behind another outstanding postseason performance from starting pitcher Drew Rasmussen and timely hitting throughout the lineup, Tampa Bay took a 3-2 lead in the best of seven series.
The Rays entered the matchup looking to build on Saturday's 7-3 victory, which evened the series at two games apiece. They delivered another strong performance in Cleveland, putting themselves in position to clinch the American League pennant on their home field.
Rasmussen was the biggest difference-maker Sunday, holding Cleveland to one run on four hits across seven innings. He consistently kept the Guardians' hitters off balance, limiting scoring opportunities and giving Tampa Bay's offense time to build an advantage.
The outing continued Rasmussen's impressive postseason run. His performance helped the Rays control the game from the early innings and put pressure on Cleveland to find answers against Tampa Bay's pitching staff.
Rasmussen's ability to work deep into the game also protected the bullpen, allowing the Rays to turn the final two innings over to their relievers with a lead.

Packers rookie Brandon Cisse records first NFL pick after embarrassing CeeDee Lamb slip appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Green Bay Packers just keep getting those picks. The Packers already picked off Dak Prescott once on Sunday Night Football, and they added to their tally near the end of the first half.
Rookie cornerback Brandon Cisse got the first interception of his career, with the help of an embarrassing slip from Cowboys star CeeDee Lamb.
Lamb slipped as he was cutting inside, which allowed a clear path for Cisse to catch Prescott's pass.
Unlike their first interception, which only resulted in a field goal, the Packers fully took advantage of the turnover as they scored a touchdown with under a minute left to take a 17-0 lead at halftime. They took just 87 seconds to execute a nine-play, 77-yard drive, which resulted in a Jordan Love one-yard touchdown run.

Marco Sturm is giving the Boston Bruins' younger players a chance to prove themselves, and Matt Poitras is taking full advantage of it.
Poitras signed a one-year, two-way deal on the day training camp opened, and one day later told reporters that he needs to "prove to everybody that I can be in the lineup every night." It was not all smooth sailing, though. He suffered a lower-body injury during training camp and missed the first three regular-season games before playing in the last six.
Ahead of his first game, Sturm said he was looking to "see [Poitras'] strengths, and I think just being smart, and skate." Six games later, Sturm is happy with what he's seen out of the 22-year-old center.
"Yeah, he's been solid, and that's all I'm asking for," Sturm said of Poitras after Saturday's game in Los Angeles. "I'm not asking for big points and goals, whatever. No, I want him to just do [his] job, and the rest will come automatically."
In his first five games of the season, Poitras centered the fourth line. He skated alongside Tanner Jeannot and Mark Kastelic, but with Pavel Zacha sidelined by an upper-body injury, Poitras moved into a top-six role.

Amcor plc (NYSE:AMCR) isn't a flashy business. Most people probably don't know much about the company, even though they come across its products every day. The company makes the packaging used for food, drinks, healthcare products, beauty products, and plenty of other everyday items.
That gives the company an interesting quality from an investment perspective. Consumers may cut back on certain purchases when the economy gets tougher, but they still need to buy food, medicine, and other basic products. About 60% of Amcor's markets are tied to nutrition, while health, beauty, and wellness make up another 25%. Billionaires are gravitating towards another packaging company, and that has also returned nearly 20% in the past year. Find here.
The company's size is another advantage. Amcor operates across a large global manufacturing network and has relationships with major customers that have been built over many years. It also offers a wide range of packaging formats and materials. For a large multinational customer, being able to deal with one supplier across multiple markets can be a meaningful advantage. The Berry Global acquisition has made Amcor even larger, although it also brought more debt onto the balance sheet.
Amcor plc (NYSE:AMCR) pays $0.65 per share every quarter, giving investors an annual dividend of $2.60. At the October 7 closing price of $41.26, that works out to a yield of about 6.3%. That's a big yield for a company selling products that are tied to everyday consumption. However, a high yield doesn't automatically make a dividend attractive. What matters is whether the business can actually afford to keep paying it. Amcor's latest numbers offer some comfort. Its steady dividend growth is one reason the stock remains popular with income-focused investors.
The company generated $1.303 billion in free cash flow during fiscal 2026, while adjusted diluted EPS came in at $4.02, up 13% from the previous year. Amcor also increased its annual dividend to $2.60. On an adjusted earnings basis, the payout ratio is around 65%. That's not unusual for a mature company and doesn't immediately raise a red flag.

Michael Dell, philanthropist and founder of Dell Technologies, pushed back against critics who argue that allowing wealthy investors to donate individual company stocks to Trump Accounts could have a nefarious impact.
Under new rules that took effect last week, charities can put individual stocks into kids' accounts as a donation. Trump Accounts are tax-advantaged investment vehicles that can be used for education expenses, starting a business, or saving for retirement. They were authorized in last year's One Big Beautiful Tax bill. Previously, the money was required to be invested in low-cost index funds.
Read more: Trump Accounts expand to stock donations. What are the benefits and risks?
So far, ***** eX President Gwynne Shotwell is the only donor to announce a major stock contribution, pledging more than 2 million shares to benefit lower-income children ages 11 to 17 living in lower-income areas.
"It's kind of hard for me to believe that's a bad thing, right?" Dell said Wednesday in an interview with Yahoo Finance. "That these children are going to somehow be negatively influenced because they now have one share of ***** eX, but they didn't have before, right? The alternative is they didn't have it, right?"

Social Security acts as a financial safety net for many retirees, but it's not enough for most. These government checks were never designed to cover all living expenses. Social Security is a supplemental income source that can keep up with expenses if you combine it with savings.
That's why many people are encouraged to save up before retirement, and the math proves it. Your life in retirement will be very different if you just live on Social Security compared to having $500,000 in savings alongside your government checks. Let's break it all down below.
The average monthly Social Security benefit for retired workers as of mid-2026 was $2,085.98, according to the Social Security Administration (SSA). At that rate, you will not pay any taxes on Social Security, ******* uming you do not have any other income sources. You won't even have to worry about state income taxes.
However, that's where the advantages end if you rely exclusively on Social Security. Per Apartment List data, the national median rent was $1,390 in August. That median rent leaves you with less than $700 for groceries, transportation, healthcare, utilities, insurance, debt and miscellaneous purchases.
For most people, the average Social Security is not enough. High-earners can max out their benefits at $5,181 per month if they earned a high salary for most or all of their 35 highest-earning years and wait until 70 to tap into Social Security, per the SSA. That monthly amount offers more room for financial flexibility, but the average is insufficient for most people unless their spouse earns a similar check or they live very frugally.
